Discussion [AMA Announcement] I'm David McKenzie, former Lead World Designer on New World. I shipped Nighthaven and Brimstone Sands. Doing an AMA next Wednesday, March 11th at 2PM EST / 7PM GMT. Drop your questions here!

Hey Aeternum,

Long-time lurker, first-time poster here (at least with this account). I'm David McKenzie, and I spent several years at Amazon Games as the Lead World Designer on New World. My biggest shipped credits are Nighthaven and Brimstone Sands, but I'm genuinely here for all of it.

I've been out of AGS for a while now and I've been wanting to do something like this for a long time. There's a lot I can talk about, and honestly some stuff I still can't, but I'll be as open as I'm able to be.

I'll be back on Wednesday, March 11th, at 2PM EST / 7PM GMT to answer questions live.

In the meantime, post your questions in this thread and I'll use the week to think through the ones I want to tackle first when the AMA kicks off. Upvote the questions you most want answered so I can prioritize.

Fair warning on what I can and can't cover: I'm happy to dig into design philosophy, zone-building, lore decisions, what made it into the game vs. what got cut, the realities of live service development, and what it's actually like working on an MMO at that scale. I'll do my best to be straight with you on the hard questions too. What I won't do is break NDA, or throw anyone under the bus, or get into anything that's genuinely confidential.

See you next week!

— David McKenzie ( www.david-mckenzie.com )

Update: I'm blown away by the support and love from the playerbase! I'm working my way through the questions now, and I'll continue to answer questions throughout the rest of the evening.

Update: Continuing to answer questions as I get time. If you have a question and it doesn't have an existing answer, I will probably get around to it!

Update: I'm just gonna keep answering questions whenever I have time until I finally answer every single one. Cheers, and thank you so much to everyone for the support, kindness, and love. New World will forever be in my heart, and the players made it happen, made it real, and made it the honor of my life.

DEV-Response A Message from the NewWorldGame Mod Team

(edit: dev response flair is automatically added when a dev posts a comment below) The thead here is from the subreddit Mod team, who are all community members and do not and didn't work for Amazon.

The last couple of days it's been hard to put my thoughts together, and this has been a tough post to write.

By now, most of you have seen the news. Amazon Games has announced that new content development for New World is ending. Season 10 and the Nighthaven update will be the last major content release the game receives. While the servers are slated to remain online "through 2026," the active development of Aeternum is over.

This news comes as part of a much larger, heartbreaking wave of layoffs across Amazon's gaming division, with the Irvine studio that poured its soul into this world being hit particularly hard. It’s a gut punch, especially because it feels like it came out of nowhere. The community was buzzing again, player counts were up, and Season 10 felt like another strong step in the right direction. To have the plug pulled now, right at what felt like a new peak of potential and revitalization... is a special kind of cruel irony that I know many of you are feeling.

For me, this isn't just the loss of a game. This is the loss of a massive part of my life for the better part of a decade. It's the loss of a world I helped shape, a community I helped raise, and friendships I'll always cherish.

My Journey in Aeternum

My own story with this game is nearly as old as the game itself. I was there at the 2016 TwitchCon reveal when New World was just a bold idea alongside other ambitious projects. From that moment, I was hooked. I became one of the first members of the public to set foot in Aeternum as part of Wave 1 during Alpha 1 tests back in 2018, and have been a part of nearly every closed test since, even in concurrent new world servers during early and post-launch. All counted somewhere north of 10k hours. Over 8 years...

I was there for the wild days of the open-world PvP base-building sandbox. I saw the good, the bad, and the ugly of that system firsthand and provided feedback alongside the rest of that small, initial group of testers. I've watched this game fundamentally transform, pivot, and evolve over the years, and I've been in the trenches testing it every step of the way. This game, its development, and its community haven't just been a hobby for me; they've been a constant, driving passion for over eight years. To see it end like this feels like losing a piece of myself.

Building Our Home: From a Few Thousand to 300,000+ Strong

In parallel to my time testing the game, I was here, helping build this community from the ground up. I didn't start as the lead here but have been for nearly 5 years As the lead moderator. I've had the incredible privilege of building this space from just a few thousand curious adventurers into a bustling hub of over 300,000 people. With more than 9 million views per month. and... in the last 12 months 66,288 Moderation actions... God help me...

Some of you may even remember our old name: r/new_world_mmo. As the game evolved and its launch in 2021 approached, we decided to transition to r/newworldgame. There was a lot to that choice, even temporary fracturing of the community, but that's long ago history. It was more than a name change; it was about making this the one central place for the whole community and shedding some serious problems, eventually combining subreddits in the form it takes today, more or less. Witnessing the following growth, seeing the connections people made, the guides they wrote, the accomplishments they had, the stories they shared. It has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. As far as volunteer, unpaid experiences go, it has not been easy, but I stayed because I love this game and wanted to build a space where people could discuss the game, the good and the bad, and share it with the rest of reddit.

A Partnership Effectively Built

The relationship between this subreddit and the development team went far beyond simple bug reports. I personally knew over 30 developers, artists, and community managers who were passionate people who loved Aeternum as much as we did. This is as close to an inside perspective as it gets, which is why I often publicly defended Scot and Katy; they were in the trenches with us, reading our feedback and genuinely caring. Many people do not understand the long development cycles of expansions. For instance, content for Brimstone Sands was already in development at launch, and Nighthaven content had started before the Angry Earth expansion was released. This context shows the immense long-term planning required while simultaneously fixing immediate issues.

The Subreddit had/has an active relationship that led to a vital, unseen collaboration. The subreddit had a direct, private communication line to key AGS staff, which I called the "bat phone" used from launch until February 2022. When game-breaking exploits like gold dupes were found, we did not let them spread on the subreddit; we used the bat phone to tell the developers directly. This is why the mod team could confidently say the devs were aware of an issue while asking users not to share the exploit steps. We used this line to report mass server crashes and many other issues. This direct line was essential for relaying critical information during the chaos of launch queues when official channels were overloaded.

This tool was a necessary partnership born from the game's technical volatility and the developers' trust in us as a reliable alarm system. It was almost always a one-way street: we provided critical information, and in return, we got a better game and occasional subreddit art. Despite this closeness, the subreddit always maintained its independence. We never removed content unless it violated our own community-developed rules, which AGS had no input on. They respected our independence and never pushed the issue when we said no. This mutual respect made it one of the most effective community-partner developer relationships I have seen. The results of getting things fixed speak for themselves, where in one instance, I was the first to report a gold dupe issue that surfaced on Reddit, and resulted in a full market stop within 45 minutes.

That method changed in February 2022 with the formation of the "New World Experts Group," a fact I can now confirm exists (with permission from Amazon Legal), along with my voluntary membership. Scot also outed the existence of this group 3 years ago in an interview. This active group included expert players of all styles and developers, allowing them to discuss and test content in development. While I cannot share specific conversations, it allowed me, as someone who saw nearly every subreddit post and 10K hours of playtime, to provide direct feedback. The more that group was trusted, the better results we saw. It was a privilege to be part of this group and to gain the development context I mentioned earlier.

To Our Friends at Amazon Games

This part is for you, the developers, artists, Videographers, Sound Designers, Combat systems engineers, Server and backend Azoth Engine developers, designers, and community managers who are reading this.

Thank you,

Thank you for the countless hours, the passion, and the creativity you poured into Aeternum. Thank you for listening to us, for engaging with us, and for never giving up on the game, even when the feedback was harsh or the technical hurdles seemed insurmountable. We saw your effort. We felt your dedication.

Please know that the community's current anger and disappointment are not directed at you. We know this decision was not yours. It was a corporate one, made in a boardroom far removed from the world you so carefully crafted. You are as much victims of this as we are, and for that, we are truly sorry. You deserved to see this project continue to grow and flourish. The talent in your studio is off the charts, and we can't wait to see what you all create in the future. We wish you the absolute best.

The Future of This Subreddit

With the servers remaining online for a while, this community still has a home. But what it's for is going to change. The mod team is already talking about what to do with r/newworldgame long-term, and we want you all to be part of that conversation.

What should this space become?

  • A Living Archive: A place to preserve the incredible guides, lore discussions, databases, and memories we've all created. A monument to the game and its community.
  • A Community Hub: A place for players to organize final in-game events, "end of the world" parties, screenshot contests, and farewell tours of Aeternum.
  • A Diaspora Network: A place for players to connect, share what games they're moving on to, and for companies and friends to find new worlds to explore together.

These are just ideas. We are open to your suggestions. This has always been your community, and you should have a say in its legacy.

This is a sad day, but our journey isn't quite over. Let's make the time we have left in Aeternum count. Thank you all for being a part of this incredible adventure.

A Thank You to My Team.

Lastly, I want to thank the Reddit Moderator Team. We are community members like you. Both the Current and former team members for everything, honorable mention u/joshrice for years of service and tens of thousands of moderation actions. This isn't a paid job, and it's not an easy job. but someone has to do it. for that, I can't thank them enough for their help in building and shaping this community.

u/commanderaze

I'd love to hear more stories from everyone else about their time in New World as we continue down the path forward.

Discussion About me, my past, and why you don't have to take my word for anything about Azoth

Post image
367 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I'm Kyza, the person behind the Azoth posts. u/Plumpy_Gnome posted a thread about my past, and I want to answer it properly, in one place.

Short version: yes, it's me, and what they found is true.

I used to make game cheats and trainers. Versus Cheats, Rootless, the Taskbar Hero and Mistfall Hunter tools, the Valorant video: that was me (But this one is a joke, you can check the video without any problem, its just me playing, the menu was an internal joke w/ friends). The desktop, the taskbar and the OBS folder match because it's the same PC. I'm not going to pretend otherwise, and I'm not going to go after someone for looking into public information about a project that's asking for your trust. That's a fair thing to do.

I stopped making cheats about 2 to 3 months ago. The old channel and the old site are still up, and they're staying up. I'm not deleting anything, because I'm not ashamed of who I was. That work is what got me here.

Why that background matters here

Making cheats is reverse engineering: figuring out how a game works from the outside, without its source code. It's the same skill it takes to rebuild the server of a game that's about to shut down, and it's a big part of why Azoth has moved as fast as it has. I'd rather say that out loud than have you find out later.

The difference is what the work is for. A cheat gives one player an edge over everyone else in a live game. Azoth is the opposite: a non-profit server so New World stays playable after January 31, 2027, with the original client untouched and the server side rebuilt from scratch. It gives nobody an advantage on the official servers.

You don't have to trust me. Here's what you can check yourself

  • The capture app is open source: https://github.com/KyzaBOY/azoth-capture (MIT license). Every release is built by GitHub Actions straight from its tag, with SHA-256 checksums and a build attestation, so you can confirm the exe you download is the code you can read. The README explains what it downloads, what it records and what it sends, including the risks, so read it before you use it and only use it if you're comfortable.
  • Azoth Central is public: https://projectazoth.com shows every packet we've documented, what's still missing, the capture ranking and an open API. No paywall. The only login is Discord, and only to send captures, so the points go to the right person.
  • We keep only the recording: when you send a capture, we keep the recording and its step log. Everything else in the zip is thrown away.
  • No money: we have never asked for money. No donations, no paid access, no Patreon, nothing to buy. And we won't.

About the deleted posts and the private profile

When I started posting about Azoth, I deleted a few old Reddit posts and made my profile private, because I didn't want to mix the two. Looking back, that was a mistake: it looked like I was hiding something, and I wasn't. Everything else is still out there, and it stays that way.

What I'm asking

Judge Azoth by what it does. Read the code, check the Central, follow the updates, and ask me anything in the comments. I'll answer. And if Azoth ever asks you for money, a password, or to run something closed-source, call it out loudly.

To u/Plumpy_Gnome: thanks for doing this in the open. One request: some of the links in your post are personal accounts that have nothing to do with Azoth, and I'd appreciate it if you removed them.

Thank you to everyone supporting the project. The work continues.

Kyza.

Suggestion For Players Still Looking for a Game to Scratch the New World Itch, Try Enshrouded.

Hopped in after the 1.0 released this past Thursday and the game is amazing. Loving the combat and the skill tree. A beautiful world to explore. And the ability to play with friends. On top of that, amazing voxel build mechanics. Its not an MMO and it doesn’t have PvP but the ambiance of the game, along with the feel of the combat does hit that New World spot for me. Its out for PC and PS5.

No this isnt a sponsored ad or anything. Im just having a blast playing Enshrouded and being how it reminded me of New World i figured and let yall know. Cheers.

Video Brimstone Sands Music & Ambience

Greetings Adventurers, Matsume here back with another music & ambience video this time featuring Brimstone Sands!

Brimstones Sands might just be the biggest zone in New World and it shows: this video is composed of 303 scenes from 80 Points of Interest and 12 Regions for a total of 2.5 hours of sun-scorching desert vibes.

Brimstone Sands is truly an incredible zone with such a wide variety of microbiomes it's hard not to appreciate it. As you traverse the landscape you will encounter desert sand-dunes, sulfur pools and hot springs, lush oasis, wind-worn sandstone bluffs, rugged highlands covered in cacti alongside a backdrop of ancient Egyptian and Roman temples and ruins. And the sunsets are to die for.

I'm really happy with the way this video turned out. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did.

Cheers, Matsume

Discussion Updating Azoth [Day 5, 6 & 7]: SlayerScript, the Brain Behind Every Move Your Character Makes

Days 5, 6 and 7, everyone! This one is a little different, and it might be our most important update so far.

First, thank you. Our Discord community has passed 1,000 members, and it's already over 1,400. Every comment, idea and share keeps us going.

These last three days all went into one thing, deep under the hood: SlayerScript. There's nothing new to show on screen yet, so instead of three small posts, here's one bigger post explaining what it is and why it matters. And today's video is a look back at our road so far, Days 1 to 4.

Let's get into it!

What is SlayerScript?

SlayerScript is the brain behind your character's body. It's the game's own logic, and many times every second it decides:

  • What your character is doing: standing, walking, running, jumping, falling, dodging, attacking, gathering, swimming, blocking...
  • Which exact animation plays, and how long each one lasts.
  • When an attack can chain into the next hit of a combo.
  • When a dodge makes you invulnerable.
  • How your body moves: speed, acceleration, stopping, and the push from attack and dodge animations.

Along the way it also checks your stamina, whether your weapon is drawn or sheathed, your active effects, and what kind of gathering you're doing.

Why It Matters

Until now, our server imitated all of this with rules we wrote by hand. And imitations get things wrong.

We measured what other players see of you, using real gameplay recordings. With our hand-written rules, the right animation shows up only 23% to 74% of the time. In combat it was just 23%: 3 out of every 4 moments were wrong.

With the game's own character logic in place of our rules, we stop guessing. Our server now follows the same character logic the game itself uses.

Where We Are Today

  • Across 14 real gameplay recordings (walking, running, fighting, gathering, skinning and more), our simulated character matches the recording 98% to 100% of the time on what the body is doing, and 95% to 99.8% on the exact animation.
  • What other players would see of you: the right animation 99.0% to 99.4% of the time, up from 23% to 74%.
  • Position: when running and dodging, the typical error is about 1 centimeter per frame, which is about as precise as we can measure.
  • It's already running inside our server in "shadow mode": the new brain runs alongside the current system and only compares results, without changing anything in game. The live version is ready behind a switch.

To be clear: it's not turned on for players yet. Live play can still turn up issues, like reactions to taking a hit, attacks locking onto their target, and mounts. We'll fix them as they show up.

What It Unlocks

  • Players seeing each other 1:1: walking, running, dodging, attacks, combos and each weapon's stance, just like the game shows them.
  • Skills: the body side of skills (animations and movement) comes ready. What's left for skills, damage and passives is the server side: damage, mana, cooldowns and effects.
  • Gathering that looks right: the correct animation for each kind, so skinning, harvesting and mining each look like themselves.

What's Next?

  • Finish running the new brain inside our server.
  • Test it in a real play session: first in shadow mode, then for real.
  • Then move on to skills, damage and passives.

As always, no dates. We'll keep being transparent about what's working, what's still missing, and what we're tackling next. We'd rather show you real progress and let the work speak for itself.

Our Road So Far

Today's video looks back at Days 1 to 4: food and buffs, gathering, progression, loot bags, our first creatures, combat, skinning, and two players seeing each other in the same world. Everything in it was recorded in game.

Discussion Caution around the project titled "Azoth" being pushed on this reddit, the user pushing the game is sus so I did some digging.

Not too long ago a post showed up on reddit pushing private server development called Azoth.

Like everyone around here, I thought oh man cool another person working on some NW stuff. I watched the video and moved on with my day. Around 12 hours after the post was made I decided to check out datkyza's reddit profile and managed to take a screenshot with my phone. This is where I started to think something was sus.

Image taken on Oct 12 2026 at 5:20am (cant prove without filming my phone)

By this time the reddit post had blown up and was well over 1000 upvotes but the profile was "off" to me. 6 year old account with 400 karma after getting 1000+ upvotes and the other posts all deleted off the account so I took a screenshot with my phone. It appeared that before posting on NW reddit they had a lot of negative karma on the account to me so I had to dig deeper. I should also mention that their profile is currently private and does not allow anyone to see their activity but for the first couple days it was public and this is where I managed to get some info from.

I could already see this info at the time but after the profile was turned private I had to use some tools to show proof, below you will see their profile using Pushpull and redditOSINT;

"New Method to unlock pets fast, and level up heroes!" This post was deleted but Pushpull saved the hyperlink from the post that takes you to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoVsy51uL3E which is a youtube dedicated to cheats called Versus Cheats.

"The best way to fast farm GOLD/XP and CubeXP" This post was deleted but you can still see the image which matches this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCVOvshHE1s also on Versus Cheats.

"Collateral Shot with Phantom! all vid = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGIBqXWgEWE " Takes you to Kyza' youtube profile https://www.youtube.com/@kyzaa

At this point something clicked, I remember back to seeing the original Azoth video and how they showed the desktop for a brief moment before playing.

AZOTH DAY 1 VIDEO
AZOTH DAY 2 VIDEO

Take a look at the taskbar layout and the icons, does it look similar to the pictures below? And what about the recording save path in OBS?

This last screenshot is from one of the Versus Cheats videos showing the youtubers discord and there is a folder called NW, that doesnt mean its NW (could be anything) but I thought I would also point that out.

Socials I found;

They launched a youtube https://www.youtube.com/@projectazothnw couple days ago and it has the same formatting as Versus Cheats where they just put discord in comments and then post the discord down below.

You be the judge after reviewing my infomation, please be very cautious around this project Azoth as the person promoting it does not appear to have good character.

Discussion Utter disbelief

Post image
939 Upvotes

It's hard to put into words. I stopped playing when the game hit some rough patches, and since then I've enjoyed plenty of other games, including a few MMOs.

But I decided to reinstall it, just to experience the sights and sounds one more time, and I'm genuinely baffled by how a game like this could die.

The combat, the world-building, the sound design, the graphics. There's just something so special about it that I haven't quite found in any other MMO.

Anyway, I'm really rooting for Project Azoth, or even another developer to recognise what this game got right and build on it. Because it genuinely feels like it's left a hole in the hearts of a lot of players, and nothing else has quite managed to fill it.

Discussion Updating Azoth [Day 4]: PvE Combat, Skinning, Two Players & Our Server, Live on Screen

1.0k Upvotes

Day 4, everyone! Your support keeps pushing us forward, and today we have a lot to show.

Thank you to everyone who has been following our progress, leaving comments, sharing ideas, and encouraging us along the way. Seeing the community grow around Azoth has been incredible, and every message genuinely motivates us to keep going.

On our last post, one comment said this "has gotta be fake". We understand: progress this fast can be hard to believe. So today, we're doing things a little differently.

This time, our server is on screen.

In the first half of the video, the right side shows our server's live view of the world: every boar, its health, its combat state, and the attack it's using, all updating as the fight happens. Later, you'll see two game clients connected to that same server, each one seeing the other.

Everything in today's video was recorded directly in-game, showcasing the actual state of our development.

Let's get into it!

PvE Combat

On Day 3, the boars could only wander around. Now you can fight them!

  • The boars on the starting beach take hits, fight back, and go down.
  • On the right, our server tracks each boar: its name and level, its health, whether it's in combat, and the attack it's using.
  • You can watch a boar's health drop on the server, hit by hit, until it dies.
  • Every hit earns weapon mastery XP. In the video: +6 Great Axe Mastery and +3 Greatsword Mastery.

Skinning

This is one of the parts we're most excited about.

  • Defeated boars can now be skinned.
  • Each skinning action grants +95 Tracking & Skinning XP, along with Rawhide and Pork. In the video: +12 Rawhide and +1 Pork.
  • Tracking & Skinning levels up as you go, reaching level 21 in the video.
  • The loot and XP come from our server, and you can see the server's view right next to the game throughout the video.

Potions Animation

  • Drink a health potion and your health goes back up with the correct animation.

Two Players, One Server

This is where it gets fun.

  • A second player connects, and Player 1 sees them appear on the beach while the second client loads in.
  • Once Player 2 is in the world, each player can see the other in real time.
  • Running, jumping, and rolling are reflected on the other player's screen.
  • From Player 2's perspective, you can watch Player 1 with their Greatsword equipped and gathering resources from a tree. At the same time, Player 1 receives +44 Logging XP and +9 Green Wood.

Two game clients. One server. Ours.

You Asked About Open Source

A lot of you have been asking about open source, so here's what we're sharing with the community.

Azoth Central: https://projectazoth.com

  • Every packet type the game uses. When we recorded this video, we had 1,062 packet types documented: 59 solved, 492 captured, and 511 still wanted.
  • Packet documentation in plain English. Learn what each packet does and how it fits into the game's communication.
  • Detailed breakdowns of solved packets. Every field documented byte by byte, including offsets, data types, meanings, and recordings.
  • Guides for capturing missing packets. Follow step-by-step instructions to record the packets we're still missing and submit your recordings through our Discord.
  • AI-friendly data. The same information is available as plain JSON, ready for AI agents and your own tools. No login required.

If you want to build your own server or explore the game's protocol, Azoth Central is the place to start.

What's Next?

We'll keep building on these foundations, improving what already works and expanding what's still missing.

Combat timing, damage calculations, creature behavior, and the feel of every hit still need a lot of work. Getting these systems functional is an important milestone, but there's still a long road ahead.

We'll keep being transparent about what's working, what's still missing, and what we're tackling next.

We're not going to pretend Azoth is further along than it actually is. We'd rather show you real progress every day and let the work speak for itself.

Join the Azoth Community

Discord: https://discord.gg/Ya8xM2NaGf

Azoth Central: https://projectazoth.com

We use Discord to share updates, discuss development, and bring the community together as the project grows.

If you want to help, Azoth Central shows which packets we're still missing and explains how to capture them in-game.

We'll keep posting our daily development updates here on Reddit as well, so you can follow our progress wherever you prefer.

Thank you again to everyone supporting Azoth. Your continued encouragement genuinely motivates us to keep working, improving, and pushing this project forward.

Let's give New World a future, one update at a time.

New World got me through a really bad time in my life and Isabella is such a great villain, I decided to honor my love for the game by framing this and hang it on the wall behind my pc.

50 × 73 cm canvas print.

The art is from an old official tweet advertising the game, I have not been able to find it again but had the image saved for years.

Discussion Updating Azoth [Day 3]: Gathering, Food Buffs, Loot & Our First Creatures!

Day 3, everyone! Your continued support is giving us even more motivation to keep pushing forward.

Thank you to everyone who has been following our progress, leaving comments, sharing ideas, and encouraging us along the way. Seeing the community grow around Azoth has been incredible, and we're excited to keep showing you what we're building.

We're back with another development update, and this time, we have quite a bit to show you.

Everything in today's video was recorded directly in-game, showcasing the actual state of our development.

Let's get into it!

Food & Attribute Buffs

Food buffs are now working!

  • Eat a Meat Pie, and you'll receive +10 Dexterity for 25 minutes.
  • The buff appears in the status bar with the correct duration.
  • The attribute bonus is reflected in your character stats. In the video, Dexterity goes from 5 to 15.
  • Eating another attribute food replaces the previous food buff.
  • While the buff is active, your health gradually regenerates.

It's great to see these systems starting to work together, from consuming an item to updating your character's attributes and applying the corresponding effects.

Gathering & Trade Skills

Gathering is coming to life!

We've been working on harvesting herbs, chopping down trees, and mining rocks. These activities now reward trade skill XP and place gathered items directly into your inventory.

Here are a few examples from the video:

  • Logging: +44 XP, along with 1 Banana and 9 Green Wood from a banana tree.
  • Mining: +64 XP and 15 Stone from a rock.
  • Trade skill progression: Skills can now level up as you gather resources. In the video, Logging reaches level 3 and Harvesting reaches level 1.

These are important building blocks for the gathering and crafting progression that makes New World's world feel alive.

Character Progression

Gathering isn't just about collecting resources anymore.

  • Gathering activities now grant character XP.
  • Attribute points can be distributed.
  • Harvesting progression is working, reaching level 12 in the video.

We're gradually connecting the different progression systems so that your actions in the world contribute to your character's development.

Dropped Items & Loot

We've also made progress on how dropped items work.

  • Dropping an item creates a loot bag on the ground that is visible only to you.
  • Items dropped close to each other are combined into the same bag.
  • You can collect everything at once or pick up individual items.
  • Locked items and quest items cannot be dropped.

It's another important step toward making inventory interactions behave as expected.

Our First Creatures Are in the World

The boars are here!

Our first creatures are now appearing in the world as you approach them.

  • They appear with their names, levels, and health bars.
  • They patrol their original paths and wander around, grazing just as you'd expect.

Combat isn't implemented yet, so you can't fight them for now. That's a separate milestone we'll tackle later.

Still, seeing creatures begin to populate the world is an exciting step forward. We're moving beyond simply connecting to the world and interacting with basic systems. We're starting to bring more of the actual game experience to life.

What's Next?

We'll keep building on these foundations, improving the systems we've already implemented and expanding the functionality that connects them.

There's still a long way to go, and we'll continue being transparent about what's working, what's still missing, and what we're tackling next.

We're not going to pretend Azoth is further along than it actually is. We'd rather show you real progress every day and let the work speak for itself.

Join the Azoth Community

We've also created a dedicated Discord server for everyone who wants to follow the project more closely.

Discord: https://discord.gg/Ya8xM2NaGf

We'll use Discord to share updates, discuss development, and bring the community together as the project grows.

We'll continue posting our daily development updates here on Reddit as well, so you can follow our progress wherever you prefer.

Thank you again to everyone supporting Azoth. Your continued encouragement genuinely motivates us to keep working, improving, and pushing this project forward.

Let's give New World a future, one update at a time.

See you on Day 4!

Downtime is scheduled for tomorrow, October 14th at 9:00AM PT, for a client and server update with a small but mighty number of player facing changes

In addition to our regular server maintenance, we included the following in the new build:

Gold removed from the cost of items in the faction shop
Catacombs sterling rewards increased
Daggers disabled
Purifying Switch II perk disabled
War merc limits removed
Isle of Night raid rewards adjustment
Ultimate trophies stack in all 5 houses
Significant reduction in the carry and storage weight of 7 perk-charm materials
Corrupted portals respawn faster

Thank you to everyone who has participated in the player wishlist thread, that is where the majority of these changes were pulled from. Our team has some more QoL changes under investigation, but no timeline on when/if we can get them into the live game. Stay tuned and as always, see you in Aeternum.

Discussion Story line quests

Playing through New World to hopefully complete the quests, story line quests mostly, got me wondering about quests early on in the game, I remember Yonas giving you the Azoth Staff questlines but can't think if there were others back in 2021 I can't even remember if Grace O'Malley was in the game back then. When you first load up the game & get in world there's the opening cinematic on board the ship, then the combat tutorial, then you get ashore with a little more combat tutorial, then you meet the Viking couple who tutor you in crafting a flint skinning knife & I think an axe & you kill a boar & harvest a tree during their tutorial, started a new character recently so that I could collect crafting resources like flux & sandpaper to sell in the trading post for cents so that I could buy it cheap with my main account, anyway after you complete the Vikings tutorial they tell you about Grace O'Malley but I don't remember if she was in the game back in 2021 & I only remember Yonas' Azoth Staff questline & the rest being random fetch quests, no Arthurian based storyline (Galahad, Morgaine, etc), no Iron Wolves and the tribute quest early in Windsward, I think places like the Great Cleave region & the Brimstone region were still "in development" back then.

Just curious what I had missed back then because I got bored of the never ending grind to get various skills up over a couple months & ended up quitting the game & only getting back into it a few times but didn't know about the story quests until a year ago. Sorry for the rambling post.

Discussion Updating Azoth [Day 2]: A Community-Driven Private Server Project

1.2k Upvotes

First of all, over 200,000 views and more than 1,000 upvotes. What?!

Honestly, we weren't expecting this kind of response to our first post. Thank you to everyone who took the time to watch our progress, leave a comment, share the post, or simply show interest in what we're building.

Seeing so many people who still care about New World and want to see it have a future is genuinely motivating.

And we're back with another update. This time, we have more to show you!

Day 2: Real Progress, One Step at a Time

Today, we want to show you a few important milestones we've reached while developing Azoth.

Here's what we've been working on:

  • Our own launcher: We've created the Azoth launcher, another important piece of the project as we continue building our own infrastructure.
  • Equipment system: We can now equip and unequip items, and the functionality is working!
  • In-game currency: The currency system is now working as well.
  • Player stats: We've also corrected the stat points, so they're now behaving as intended.

These might seem like small steps compared to everything New World has to offer, but that's exactly the point of this development process.

We're not trying to make a fancy video that hides what's happening behind the scenes. We want to show you the actual progress, including the fundamental systems that need to work before we can move on to bigger features.

You can watch the new video to see these systems in action.

What's Our Next Goal?

Right now, we're going to focus 100% on the inventory system.

Before we start building larger gameplay systems, we want to establish a solid foundation for items, equipment, inventory interactions, and the underlying logic that connects them.

Once we're satisfied with that foundation, our next major focus will be gathering and resource-related systems, including mining and other gathering activities.

We want to approach this in the right order. There's no point in rushing into advanced gameplay mechanics if the systems supporting them aren't ready.

One system at a time. One milestone at a time.

That's how we're going to build Azoth.

We've Also Created Our Discord!

With so many people following the project already, we decided it was time to create a dedicated place for the community.

Join the Azoth Discord here: https://discord.gg/Ya8xM2NaGf

We'll use Discord to bring the community together, share development updates, discuss ideas, and give everyone a place to follow the project's progress.

Our goal is to make development as transparent as possible. We want people to see what we're working on, understand what is already functional, and follow the project as it grows.

And yes, we're planning to keep posting updates here on Reddit, too!

A Quick Reminder About Our Vision

For those who missed our first post, Azoth is a community-driven private server project for New World.

Our priority is to develop the emulator first and work toward launching a completely free-to-play server.

We don't intend to charge the community to fund development. We want to build the project first, get the fundamentals working, and prove what we can achieve through actual progress.

We're still in the early stages. There are many challenges ahead, and we're not going to pretend that everything is already working.

But we're moving forward, and we'll keep showing you what we accomplish.

See You Tomorrow?

Our plan is to share development updates every day, so you can follow Azoth's progress from these early foundations to the systems that will eventually make the server playable.

Thank you again for all the support. The response to our first post was incredible, and we're excited to have you along for the journey.

Let's give New World a future.

See you in the next update!

Discussion Could AI Help Save New World?

Post image
0 Upvotes

This is purely thinking out loud, and based on the recent gaming news and clips of gamers creating AI mashup mods mixing games like Mario and Elden Ring together.

Is it possible this tech could somehow assist in either building private community-driven servers or standalone independent system servers for solo/lan-type play?

Wanted to see if anyone with more knowledge or experience had any insight or thoughts on this for open discussion. Cheers all.

Discussion Introducing Azoth: A Community-Driven Private Server Project

1.9k Upvotes

Hello, everyone!

I know many of you are looking for a real private server project for New World, and I wanted to share what I've been working on since the announcement that the official servers would be shut down.

Since that announcement, we've seen people making big claims, projects showing fake or misleading footage, and others that haven't demonstrated anything actually working. I understand why many of you are skeptical at this point.

But I'm here to tell you that this is possible, and we're actively working on it.

I can't speak for other projects. You can find various projects and code repositories on GitHub, but as far as I know, many of them haven't demonstrated the ability to connect to a server, move around in the actual game world, and get the fundamentals working.

We can already do that.

Our project is called Azoth, and you can check out our development videos.

To be completely transparent, we're still at a very early stage. Right now, we can connect to the world and move around, but player replication isn't working yet. There's still a lot of work ahead of us, and we're not going to pretend otherwise.

However, we have a solid technical direction and a clear understanding of how we intend to approach the remaining challenges. We're building this step by step, focusing on getting the fundamentals right rather than making promises we can't back up.

What about monetization?

Azoth will not ask the community for money to fund its development.

Our priority is to finish the emulator first. Once it's ready, our goal is to launch a completely free-to-play server.

We want players to enjoy the experience without having to pay for premium features or gameplay advantages. Any premium-style content we introduce will be focused on cosmetics and visual customization, not pay-to-win mechanics.

And yes, we're planning to make the horse free. XD

What's next?

For now, the best thing you can do is keep an eye on this subreddit and follow my account. I'll be sharing development updates, videos, and progress reports here as the project moves forward.

I know many people have lost hope after the official shutdown announcement, and I understand the skepticism. We don't expect you to believe us just because we're making a post.

We'd rather prove it through our work.

Azoth is just getting started, but we're serious about this project, and we'll keep showing you what we're building.

Thank you to everyone who still believes that New World deserves a future.

See you around! ❤️

Discussion Just played for the first time in a long time.

I just played this game for the first time since launch and thought it was neh. I just fired it up on steam deck and it's pretty damn good. The combat and gathering is great.

I get it now, I see why so many people are upset. A perfect MMO on a steam deck. What a shame.

Discussion What is the general consensus of why the game fail?

I've looked around on google and from what it's saying, the player base was falling off because of bugs, and because of that, it led to layoffs and the eventual shutdown announcement.

Is that really the reason the game fell off so fast, though?

I know one of the reasons I stopped was that my guild/company all quit after a server merge, and I couldn't get any of my friends to play. I kept playing for a while, but it started getting old trying to get resources with them always being taken.

I was interested in playing the NightHaven update, but by the time I was contemplating playing again, the server shutdown announcement came out, and I lost interest. I recently hopped on to take some photos to remember the game, and the new zone does look really nice.

Anyway, just curious why others stopped playing and if there is a general consensus on why.

Suggestion New World: Aeternum Private Server Progress — Character Creation, Combat, Harvesting & Partial Inventory Working

I’ve been working on a private server project for New World: Aeternum and wanted to share some early progress.

At the moment, the server already supports a basic gameplay loop:

  • Character creation works
  • Players can enter the world / connect to the server
  • Movement and jumping work
  • Combat is functional
  • Harvesting / gathering works
  • The inventory system is partially implemented

It’s still very early and nowhere near a complete game experience, but being able to create a character, explore the world, fight, gather resources, and use at least part of the inventory is a big milestone.

The hardest parts so far have been protocol handling, world/entity synchronization, persistence, and getting all the gameplay systems to interact correctly. Combat, gathering, and inventory may sound simple, but each one depends on a lot of underlying server logic.

Current focus

Next, I’m planning to work on:

  • More reliable inventory behavior and item persistence
  • Better world and entity synchronization
  • More complete harvesting and resource respawning
  • Combat feedback, stability, and general server robustness

To be clear: this is my own server-side experimentation. I’m not sharing leaked files, binaries, or anything intended to connect to official Amazon Games services.

Would people be interested in more technical dev logs — for example about protocol analysis, world replication, inventory design, or how I implement specific gameplay systems?
