Person of interest identified in sexual assault at frat party near University of Chicago, school says

""The University's public notice about the report of sexual assault the day it happened encouraged others with knowledge of the events to help identify a suspect. This identification has been corroborated by key witness statements and video evidence from University cameras and license plate readers, all of which has been shared with CPD by the Department of Safety & Security," the university said in a statement."
Suspects. They should be looking for suspects, plural. The men outside the door helped commit the crime.

Concerning that they’re plugging the license plate readers

""There has been a story out that there were people outside of a door 'cheering on' the attack and we do not believe that any of those people were AEPi members," the fraternity said." Yeah, sure Jen.
Allegedly only 7% of US male students get accepted in the fraternity, yet those who are are 3 times more likely to commit SA in their first year of university than men who are not in the fraternity...
Allegedly 76% of US congressmen and senators, 85% of the Supreme Court justices, 45% of US presidents, and 50-85% of Fortune500 execs were in a fraternity.
What a coincidence that with 76% of the US lawmakers being in a fraternity, there are jurisdictions (NY) with a convenient loophole in a law which basically blames a victim for getting raped (should not have gotten drunk).

Bro stop sexually assaulting women, it’s literally so fucking easy to accomplish this task
55
u/Unequivocally_Maybe 1d ago
There was a crowd of men outside cheering and some asking to get a turn. There were people at the party that heard that and did nothing. It's so much more than "stop sexually assaulting women." If you see or hear or read something fucked up in a group chat, do something about it.
Not raping isn't actually a high enough standard. The men who encourage, allow and ignore violence against women far outnumber the predators, and without that system of explicit and implicit support, they wouldn't get away with it like they do.

Hand the file over to the external PD; none of this campus police/internal investigation bullshit.
248
u/GeekAesthete 1d ago
The suspect is not a student nor employee of the school, so campus police have nothing to do with this. Chicago PD are already the ones investigating it.
57
u/Hesitation-Marx 1d ago
Fun fact: UoC cops are empowered to make arrests within boundaries in Hyde Park, and those boundaries are much larger than you’d expect. You don’t have to be an employee, faculty, or a student to run afoul of them.
Source: lived by these frats. I’m unsurprised about this.
3
u/hithisishal 1d ago
I think that is true of all campus police? Otherwise they would be security, not police.
10
u/dwbapst 1d ago
The UChicago police are one of the largest private police forces in the world and have a lot of leeway to responding to crimes in the ‘area of intluence’ around the university going back to issues in the sixties. This is why some streets heading into Hyde Park from the south had barricades on them for decades. (Maybe still do?)
Anyway they have a special relationship with the city that is a very unique situation.

Sorry, haven't read all comments, but weren't there several people in the frat holding the door closed? If so, everyone sexually assaulted her, not just the "not frat" guy.

So many frat party rapes/sexual assaults. Should be about time to make some substantial changes to the one common denominator here which is the frat "culture." Or its just time to get rid of frats.

If they know who he is why don't they arrest him? She received a rape kit right away there should be DNA evidence. I highly doubt he wore a condom because it happened so fast and he's an idiot.

Rape kills you soul, sense of security, sense of being able to trust people.
And you are still called a slut and people asks what you did to provoke that.

-1
u/CTeam19 1d ago
The point of that whole thing is you are guaranteed to know that a bear will kill you but a man? You can't 100% trust a man to not rape even if the woman is a family member(Sister, Mother, Daughter) of his.
-23
u/AccordingMedicine129 1d ago
Lmfao so a bear will kill your but a man may or may not. So you choose guaranteed death.
How deluded are you? 🤣

“Not a student” — so wtf was happening at that party?
69
u/another_feminist 1d ago
When I was in college, I’d visit my friends at their schools from time to time. We’d go to the local parties and bars, it was quite normal. I’m assuming that’s the case here?
106
u/RedstoneRay 1d ago
Could have been a number of things. They could have been a student elsewhere who knew people at the school, or underage taking advantage of free beer, or someone from town that just knows where the parties are at.
25
34
u/the_gubna 1d ago
Re: underage
One of the biggest things we could do to prevent this heinous shit from happening (other than holding the perpetrators responsible, obviously) is to shift the drinking age back to 18.
Drinking in bars isn’t safe, but it’s WAY safer than pushing young women into situations where their consumption of alcohol (or other drugs, knowingly or unknowingly) is controlled by frat boys.
2
u/Reinheitsgetoot 17h ago
While I do believe if you’re old enough to kill in war, you’re old enough to drink in peace but if I was still behind the bar, you would need to significantly increase my pay to for me to accept that legal responsibility and garbage tips. Yes, tipping culture is shit but I could see the drinking age legally being lowered before being able to pry living wage payment from bar/restaurant owner due to the shitbags in the NRA (no, the other shitbags in the National Restaurant Association). Edit- pluralization.
-1
u/wallabee_kingpin_ 1d ago
There is a ton of research showing that people are overall safer with higher drinking ages. Car accidents go way down, and that affects people who aren’t even drinking and are just innocently driving on the same road as a teenager.
It sounds like this girl was roofied which could have easily happened at a bar.
16
u/the_gubna 1d ago
There is a ton of research showing that people are overall safer with higher drinking ages.
Overall? I'm not sure about that. There's certainly less car accidents, but that comes at a cost. There's a reason the United States' university drinking culture stands out in so many ways compared to peer countries.
It sounds like this girl was roofied which could have easily happened at a bar.
Could it happen in a bar? Sure. But sorority girls aren't drinking jungle juice out of trash cans in bars. They're also not placed in an unfamiliar building where only the men looking to take advantage of them know the codes to the doors.
-6
u/wallabee_kingpin_ 1d ago
Yes, overall. Accidents are a primary cause of death for young people.
And the US has a better drinking culture (fewer deaths) than countries with lower drinking ages, and we don’t drink that much compared to other developed countries.
5
u/the_gubna 1d ago
Deaths are not the only source of harm for young people. If 20k additional traffic deaths considerably reduces the risk of sexual assault to ~9 million young women in college, I think that's a conversation worth having.
And the US has a better drinking culture (fewer deaths) than countries with lower drinking ages, and we don’t drink that much compared to other developed countries.
Again, "fewer deaths" is not my only criteria for judging a drinking culture.
1
u/Eurehetemec 3h ago
Again, "fewer deaths" is not my only criteria for judging a drinking culture.
I don't think even that element is actually factual either. He's probably using something incredibly narrow like alcohol toxicity deaths specifically - it cannot be deaths from drunk-driving per capita caused by under 21s because a lot of European countries will be far lower (whilst allowing drinking at 14-18) simply because of public transport actually existing.
1
u/Eurehetemec 3h ago
And the US has a better drinking culture (fewer deaths)
This is simply a lie on your part. It's not remotely true unless you're talking about something incredibly narrow like "deaths from alcohol toxicity under 18" or the like. If you're claiming the US has a fewer deaths from DUIs, per capita, say for people under 21, than say the UK, you're absolutely just lying.
Also generally speaking US drinking culture is pretty appalling, especially in colleges.
27
u/PM_YOUR_MANATEES 1d ago
I have seen someone indicate that the assaulter is a Purdue student who was visiting friends on the UofC campus, but I'm not able to verify this.
-18
u/wallabee_kingpin_ 1d ago
Frats should be banned (after these guys are all in prison), but if that isn’t happening, they shouldn’t allow non-students at their parties. I immediately imagined some random older man, maybe an alum. But another college-age man is obviously more likely, yes.
4
u/the_gubna 1d ago
Not that I disagree with you, but there’s some legal difficulties with this. It’s one thing if the university owns the house/recognizes the organization, it’s another if it’s private property and a non-recognized association (as is the case at U Chicago).
A private school could, in theory, expel students who they found to be members of unrecognized organizations. At a public school, that runs into a first amendment issue really quickly.
That’s obviously before you get to all the high-powered lawyers fraternities are connected to.
1
u/rugger87 1d ago
In my experience with Greek life, unless you personally knew a member, or were a member from another chapter, you aren’t getting into a frat party. Greek life at some colleges is essentially a social passport.
Not defending or advocating, but it’s a reason people go Greek.
2
u/the_gubna 1d ago
or were a member from another chapter
Even this varies considerably. Many chapters essentially don't care about their national org.

u/Ratnix 1d ago edited 1d ago
These parties aren't exclusive to just students going to school there. Nobody is checking IDs to make sure everyone is a student. They don't live in some gated community where only students at the college have access to it. They are parties, just like the ones not thrown by "fraternities." Townies can and will show up at them.
And contrary to popular belief, this kind of thing doesn't only happen at "frat" parties, it can and does happen at any party. You just never hear about them because it doesn't make a good headline when they can't blame the evil fraternities.
-25
u/wallabee_kingpin_ 1d ago
A lot of frat houses are owned by the school, and the school can absolutely mandate checking of IDs and other safety measures.
This “can” happen at any party, but it mostly doesn’t. Fraternities are cesspools that shouldn’t be exist.
If this is so prevalent outside of frats, prove it by showing me even one example where it happened at a normal house party.
22
u/Torchlakespartan 1d ago
Dude, you are incredibly off base and incorrect here. I really don’t like frats either, but you’re just wrong here.
1) Have you ever been to a frat party? Like a big one at a major school? The idea of checking student id’s at every door anytime people come in is beyond ridiculous. It’s just simply not a thing that could happen.
2) There are wayyyyyy more house parties than there are frat parties and the guys that host those are in no way morally superior to frat guys. Assaults happen there are a lot of people getting hammered/fucked up with drugs and someone decides to take advantage of that situation. It is SO not limited to frats and to be honest, hyper-focusing on frats is completely skirting the real issue and making an easy ready-made punching bag the devil when the same thing is happening all over.
I actually really hate frats. I wasn’t in one, but my girlfriend for all 4 years of college at Michigan State was in a Sorority so I’ve been to a ton of their events and shit. I hate them.
But you are so so so wrong thinking that this is a frat problem. It’s a culture problem and has been since forever. I’m not excusing any of the actions, it’s horrific. I have multiple good friends who have been victims. But as much as I hate them, it’s not a frat exclusive thing by any margin at all.
-5
u/wallabee_kingpin_ 1d ago
I was in a frat at a public school. Our school forced us to hire security and bartenders for every event so that IDs were checked and brothers couldn’t roofie the drinks. It wasn’t impossible or even difficult to enforce.
And the fact that there are more house parties and this still mostly happens at frat parties just proves my point.
Frats specifically select and train young men to be part of what is essentially a gang. You can’t compare house parties to that. I’ve been in both and you have no idea what you’re talking about.
-4
u/longboi28 1d ago
They absolutely check IDs now, in CU Boulder all the frat parties have a bouncer who scans everyone's IDs before they go in and won't let anyone in to the party if they're underage or not from the school, to be fair they only do this now because the frats there have had some serious issues with underage drinking and assaults but it's definitely a thing these days

-7

Yes, at large public schools, and it was very unusual for non-students to be there (meaning townies, not other people our age)
12
u/JediRhyno 1d ago
You must have gone to a unique area or in another country. In the US, it’s never been a thing to check IDs at a door to a house or frat party or not let non students in. Unless it’s a tiny get together.
-1
u/wallabee_kingpin_ 1d ago
It’s not common and I never said it was, but UCLA, LSU, OSU, Cal Poly, and my school all require third parties to serve alcohol at frat parties. Some of them have a blanket requirement and some only do it in certain circumstances, like a frat getting in trouble.
2
u/SamuelLucienMorrows 1d ago
Don't know about your school but I guarantee you at all those places you name you'll find a lot of none students partying at frat parties.

-23
u/histbasementdweller 1d ago
sororities aren't gang raping ppl
18
u/the_gubna 1d ago
Sororities policies on alcohol, men in the house, etc, push their members towards frat parties. Sororities could host their own house parties, and decide what men are let in, but they don’t.
Sororities accept that risk because the insurance premiums on their houses are half the price.
32
u/liquordeli 1d ago
No but they do partake in dangerous hazing activities that have directly caused deaths and and led to suicides. Just google "sorority hazing deaths"
All Greek life is net negative
16
u/Whaty0urname 1d ago
I mean sorority hazing stories can be pretty jarring. Women can be just as horrendous as men. Sure not raping parties but I'm sure there are just as many stories of hazing rituals from sororities.
-32
u/histbasementdweller 1d ago
women could be just as horrendous as men, but they aren't.

I was just thinking that: while women are less violent than men, they really make up for it in the psychological abuse department.
-1
u/Plus-Enthusiasm6965 1d ago
I remember hearing about some lady who strangled all of her kids with exercise bands.
Then yal blamed the husband and rallied around her.
Safe to say you all can be just as horrendous as men
-10
u/histbasementdweller 1d ago
men murder their entire families an average of once every five days. the number one cause of death in pregnant women is murder. I don't give a hot fuck what you think.

even outside of hazing, which is often horrific, many of these gang rapes are tolerated and even facilitated by sororities!

u/strugglz 1d ago
I wouldn't want to be sexist in banning groups from universities. What's the old adage, it only takes one to fuck it up for everyone else?
3
u/chefjessphd3 1d ago
Men in men’s clubs rape women so women should have their clubs taken away too? Because men are raping women, the women get punished? 😅
5
u/liquordeli 1d ago
Banning sororities in the interest of fairness is obviously silly.
Banning sororities because they kill young women is good enough for me.
-2
u/RaijuThunder 1d ago
Maybe not though I'm sure it has happened. Though some of their hazing rituals are down right cruel. Same for frats of course. I stayed far awat from the Greek life when I was in college.
-8
u/Ratnix 1d ago
Do you honestly think that would stop people from throwing parties and stop students from attending parties not thrown by fraternities and sororities?
6
u/lets_go_for_a_run 1d ago
No, but it would allow non-campus police to have jurisdiction to investigate these cases unlike right now.
Universities benefit from basically being able to handle in-house and kill any further investigations. Which has led to so many of these cases ending up with the sexual harassers/assaulters being punished by writing an essay.
2
u/SteedOfTheDeid 22h ago
Sounds like what we really need to get rid of is campus police then. University staff have no business investigating crimes

There are some really decent frats that care about academia but these weirdo ones are like mtv science experiments.
5
u/Hesitation-Marx 1d ago
One of the benefits of being terminally uncool and autistic is never being invited to these kinds of parties.
Which I’m fine with, because they never have cats.
4
u/Lost_Department_2177 1d ago
They used to just throw cheap all you could drink parties. Some had canned beer and others kegs but the sketchy ones had a giant container everyone dunks a cup in. Very few had decent music so it was just people grinding to radio pop then running from police because they’re full of high school kids who thought that was the ultimate high school party experience. Then you grow up then wonder why are a bunch of college seniors letting 14+ yr olds into the place then feeding them drinks that are around 30% alcohol with little to no taste then you realize they’re pedos and rapists 😐
