"Oh geez, he's in a wheelchair? Now you tell me."

LOL. We're talking about the ghoul who visibly mocked a disabled reporter on live TV. He wouldn't give a shit about this guy being in a wheelchair. He just realized it was terrible optics right before midterms.

149

u/ABetterKamahl1234 1d ago

He just realized it was terrible optics right before midterms.

He was probably convinced that it was.

The man has zero idea what is good or bad optics. Otherwise he'd not say the shit he does.

Yeah, I'm not suggesting it was out of compassion. One thing Trump knows is optics on television.

14

u/yamiyaiba 1d ago

Respectfully, I disagree. His history would indicate he has zero concept of optics. What he does have is enough fanatical appeal to override bad optics.

In this case, I'd wager an advisor managed to trick him into accepting that even his base would react poorly to this.

Hesgeth has to go. Should be fired or arrested himself. Dude's a maniac that is destroying the military.

u/Maleficent_Ant_8895 1d ago

He’s done after the midterms. He will be the sacrifice and blamed for the war. Watch all the “leaks” in December and January. I bet he’s gone before March and a new dipshit replaces him akin to the new DHS guy that took over for the puppy killer Barbie faced freak show

343

u/sargonas 1d ago

I expect he’ll be gone before January because Trump isn’t going to want to risk a Democrat majority Congress trying to vet his next pick

162

u/Beard_o_Bees 1d ago

This exactly.

He's also going to get saddled with the blame for Iran, even though just about everybody who knows anything at all about the region was screaming 'don't do it!' before he made the super-duper-powerful-bigboy decision to ignore everyone and do it anyway.

Israel must have him figured out pretty well to get him to do what every other administration for decades refused to do - get directly, kinetically, involved in their blood-beef with Iran.

41

u/subnautus 1d ago

Israel must have him figured out pretty well to get him to do what every other administration for decades refused to do - get directly, kinetically, involved in their blood-beef with Iran.

Simply knowing Trump is an idiot who thinks Iran is a tiny backwater country is probably all it takes, though.

28

u/JarvisProudfeather 1d ago

Hegseth is a militant Christian nationalist. The church he goes to is one of those insane evangelical ones that are rabid Zionists because they believe an unstable Middle East and helping Israel is the key to bringing on the rapture. He didn’t need any convincing to go to war with Iran.

He will just be sent to work on operation american shield or whatever noem was sent to after she spent 200 million on ads for ice. Funny how we never got that money back after she was fired. Maybe funny isn't the right word.

13

u/Bonafideago 1d ago

It's not "funny haha", more like "funny uh oh"

47

u/Death_Sheep1980 1d ago

There was a commentator on YouTube who asserted that if the Democrats take back the Senate, Hegseth will be fired immediately so that Trump can get his replacement confirmed before January.

34

u/Dt2_0 1d ago

Dems have a very close minority in the senate, and it only takes a few ousted Republicans abandoning the party line (which is extremely common during their lame duck period after losing election and before the new congress is sworn in). Trump needs to fire Hegseth now if he wants to get his hand picked candidate through the Senate. I doubt there will be the political capital in late November or December to push one through.

It will be very interesting to see how Trump handles becoming a lame duck should Democrats perform as well as projections show. It might be comedy gold.

As an outsider looking in, just what in gods name is he doing? You have by far the greatest military on the planet, and despite what Hesgeth is doing, you still do. But he’s absolutely destroying it and the damage he has done is going to take so so long to rectify

21

u/GrowlyBear2 1d ago

If I didn't think it was all about ego I'd say it was intentional treason. I absolutely believe he legitimately thinks the military needs to be remade into his small minded, insecure, macho man fantasy.

21

u/SallyAmazeballs 1d ago

He's a Christian nationalist, so he's basically trying to kick all the women and people of color out of leadership positions to make the military look male, white, and Christian, and then doing a crusade in the Middle East. It's a really weird power fantasy that's not based on reality, so it's backfiring big time.

Wanting praise for reversing your own insane decision is typical Trump behavior. You get no points, this shouldn’t have ever been an idea in the first fucking place.

4.2k

u/Dense-Competition-51 1d ago

It’s pretty classic Trump (and GOP, honestly) playbook: create a problem, then wanting credit for fixing it. I can’t believe they trotted it out in the first place. It shows how much of an echo chamber they live in.

772

u/Beard_o_Bees 1d ago

I haven't run into anyone that's 'pro execution on live TV as entertainment' yet.

Not to say they aren't out there, but yeah. He was trying to sell an idea that very few actually wanted - which is absolutely on-brand for him.

It also goes to show how few (if any by now) voices of restraint remain in his 'team', such as it is. It's wall-to-wall 'yes men/women', otherwise this would have died on the table as soon as it was proposed.

325

u/StabbyMcSwordfish 1d ago edited 1d ago

I heard a poll showed that 2/3 people believe he should be executed, but only 13% supported a public livestream. So even among the people who want the death penalty, livestreaming it is an extremely unpopular idea.

107

u/Donthatemeyo 1d ago

Yeah I think execution by firing squad is acceptable, it has historically been the punishment for the crime he committed, but his motivation was to become a martyr and inspire others public execution plays into that and is a stupid idea.

49

u/hesh582 1d ago

I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with using guns in an execution relative to other options. We've got a real tendency to prefer appearances over substance in matters like these, which makes a bullet to the temple inhumane because it's ugly and messy but an injection which is actually inhumane more acceptable.

But I really don't understand the whole "firing squad" thing. We really can't figure out a better way to put a bullet into a condemned person than lining up a bunch of soldiers quite a ways away and hoping they don't miss?

67

u/Donthatemeyo 1d ago

It's for the people pulling the trigger generally one of the rifles have a blank in it so the people in the firing squad can belive theirs was the blank, and these are soldiers who had to pass a marksmanship test at a much farther distance than the execution. I personally am against the death penalty for multiple reasons.

190

u/paper_liger 1d ago edited 1d ago

as a former soldier, I assure you I did not sign up to shoot a guy chained up like a fucking rabid animal, and anyone who volunteers to do so should be drummed out of the military.

if he had caught a bullet when he was doing the deed, good.

but once he's a prisoner I'd rather let him rot in jail and die with a whimper instead of a bang. that's all he deserves. no pageantry. no last words. no martyrdom.

a firing squad is not justice. it's a moronic revenge fantasy.

62

u/Tovrin 1d ago

The only people that I could imagine wanting to see that are maybe people related to the victims that want some sort confirmation of retribution. Other than that I don't know...wanting to watch someone die is wild.

56

u/Worthyness 1d ago

I believe a good number of them also didnt want the execution televised. Its just an absurd move to even try to do. If nothing else, it makes the guy a martyr and you show the US public that youre a bunch of violent assholes who enjoy killing people on screen like a dystopia future state (not that they arent basically doing that already)

I've worked with some shitty blue-collar people and even THEY would likely be against a livestream of it.

However, I had one coworker who would probably be foaming at the mouth furiously masturbating to the idea. Dude was a racist dumbfuck 3%er who got giddy talking about his "home defense" CQB drills (or whatever they called them) and making people just generally uncomfortable. Guy walked up to me one day mid-shift and was like "hey wanna see this video" then shoved his phone in my face, playing some sort of LiveLeak cartel execution watching a guy get shot repeatedly by several people until his head was no longer head-shaped.

THAT is the demographic I assume supports it.

Honestly with this one, it felt like Hegseth just threw it out there without thinking (idk what’s worse) and the the admin went into its typical never back down, never apologize mode.

They tried to find rationalizations for a stupid off the cuff idea with zero public support until they finally couldn’t.

Pretty typical Trumpian policy making now that you think about it.

  1. It is against US law (not that he cares)
  2. It is something that you only see in Afghanistan and Iran (not that he cares)
  3. Apparently the guy is currently disabled, so they would have to bring him in his wheelchair then have soldiers fire at him (not that he cares, but I don't think it would send the message he wants)

I think it was to distract.

BTW: where are the Epstein files that should be available a year ago? Why more than half couldn't be released? What's going on with war in Iran, why are we aiding our enemy who is actively helping Iran target our bases and soldiers? I mean even if we are whoring ourselves, this is an insignificant amount of oil to change anything. It feels like excuse to just remove sanctions. It doesn't even make sense as currently we are exporters and Russia right now is forced to import.

I call it the ragebait presidency. Everything is performative nonsense to get people riled up. It doesn’t matter that they never planned to actually do it because the media attention was the actual goal.

I’m tired boss

85

u/iusedtohavepowers 1d ago

The thing is though. Even though it’s performative it is to the Nth degree. Like the Kennedy Center being renamed and the reflecting pool and shit. He will mindlessly dump resources and people’s time into set up or even just execution. “No pun intended I fucking hate trump” but he will waste whatever he needs to for the show which is a huge part of the problem. Because it’s not just money or effort or planning. It’s people’s lives all over the world and their food and water and resources.

8

u/Hot-Exam3187 1d ago

Bombing Iran during the height of the Epstein Files news coverage is the most shameless, selfish, transparently evil instance of this I'd say.

And it worked, for that specific purpose. It created a thousand new problems, but there's no foresight involved in any of these decisions anyway. Like you said, mindlessly making a show.

I don't think so. I get the feeling in this case that it was actual incompetence and no one stopped to considered the ramifications of Hegseth's idiotic military-bro-politics. They have enough distractions with all of the low effort litmus tests and AI tiger videos. Just be glad public disgust won out over their moronic savegery this time.

128

u/DaveShadow 1d ago

As an outsider, I’m sick of hearing “it’s all a distraction”, cause it feels even his detractors want to think there’s some 4D chess game being played.

It’s not all distractions. It’s what happens when you give evil groups unbridled power. It’s just a shitshow from top to bottom, and it’s not nessecarily by design. It’s just how this looks when you give fascists power.

49

u/snowshoeBBQ 1d ago

This is 100% correct. Distract us from what exactly? It's all out there. They're being blatantly awful on every fucking level.

26

u/Turgid_Donkey 1d ago

Besides, with everything they've been doing in plain sight, why would they need distractions?

14

u/DaveShadow 1d ago

Yeap. I mean, we know so much evil shit about them. And barely anything is done in response. What do they need “distractions” from? He’s already a war mongering rapist, who is very likely in the Epstein files, and still America chugs along. Hoping the guy who openly admits to rigging previous votes won’t just do it again…

23

u/Pauly_Amorous 1d ago edited 16h ago

use it feels even his detractors want to think there’s some 4D chess game being played.

People give these guys way too much credit; they're not that clever.

Besides that, nobody watching a public execution is going to be distracted from the fact that they can't afford rent or gas.

Btw just in case anyone thinks this was a last minute crisis of conscience, I’m sure the real reason is either because no one wanted to have their brand associated with this for sponsors and/or they actually thought about it for more than 3 seconds and realized that it’d be giving the guy exactly what he wants by making him a martyr.

403

u/SHUT_DOWN_EVERYTHING 1d ago

He started rethinking it when he found out the guy is paralyzed.

Him and the drunk one were looking to turn this into a TV spectacle but that would be extremely difficult when you have to roll the guy in a wheelchair before shooting him. It would just look pathetic.

That is the only reason they decided not to proceed. It doesn't make for good TV.

Its their strategy. They will encroach, break boundaries, then pull back when meeting too much resistance. But every time they blow past a boundary and get rebuked they never fully retreat back to the former boundaries. Because executing a guy in a wheelchair looks “weak”.

Because the remaining national security experts have expressed that a public video of the execution could be used as a recruitment tool for other Islamist extremist.

The level of indecency and machismo within the Trump administration will be a stain on U.S. history for decades to come. I'm not saying that guy is innocent; he chose his path, but to parade his execution like it's some reality TV show to satisfy the administration's thirst for blood is astoundingly inhumane and embarrassing for this whole country. Those who voted for this are terrible people.

He was never allowed to in the first place, he just thought it'd get some of his rabid supporters a bit more excited for the elections.

In fact the choice to execute him (publicly or otherwise) within Trump's term isn't Trump's decision, it's Nidal Hassan's if he wishes to use his right to appeal it would put this past 2029.

And maybe the next time he wants a public execution, it won't be so shocking.

Hopefully they'll be able to find someone to kill in public who has better optics that a guy in a wheelchair so they can satisfy their sadistic bloodlust. What's the fun of being in charge if you can't demonstrate your power to end people's lives? Kim Jong Un is the leader of a much smaller country, yet he gets to conduct public firing-squad executions, with crowds, often including schoolchildren, compelled to watch. It's not fair to Trump.

So any chance after the midterms when democrats win the house and senate (although not possible to get 67 senate seats) that there will be some R senator defectors that will vote to impeach/convict some of the worst ones like Hegseth? Trump has burned the GOP down, it'll take a long time to rebuild the brand, some R senators doing the right thing for once would go a long way to start to repair that. Let's see how it unfolds.

There will never be enough defectors to impeach and remove trump. If being the first president to fight the peaceful transition of power by denying the results without evidence, asking state governors to "find" more votes, implementing fake elector schemes, and siccing a mob of your supporters to the capitol isn't enough to convince them to do so, then nothing will. They will still support him and will claim BS like how they think he learned his lesson. You can't rely on a corrupt government to solve the problem of a corrupt government.

If his brain wasn't addled by the syphilis and Adderall, he'd realize he has a large enough base of support that by simply holding Hegseth out as a sacrificial lamb and maybe kicking Stephen Miller to the curb, he could ease the tensions enough to survive the next few years. As it stands, I think a Romanov's situation is as likely as a peaceful transfer of power.
