Wemby trucks sabonis then dunks

u/Malemansam Spurs 4h ago
i love the play but the refs called a charge on Sabby for doing the same thing earlier to Wemby which was just wrong, man.
Wemby used his shoulder even more to dislodge him too, so its just wild how the whistle can be so different. Like let the dudes play ffs, you cant call a foul on one side then ignore it here.

This is Sabonis bring off balance or embellishing, nothing about what Wemby did would ever result in a much stronger player going flying 10 feet like that.

u/PenancePenancePanda 2h ago
My initial thought was, is Wemby really that strong now? I know Sabonis is a brick wall though. So this makes much more sense.

u/kosmonautinVT 4h ago
He was just moving his feet when Wemby put his shoulder into him, not even close to off balance
-1
u/Instantcoffees Warriors 3h ago
This is just a small bump. He was clearly off-balance because he was backpedaling and did not anticipate the bump. It's ridiculous to think that this should be a foul in basketball.
21
u/kosmonautinVT 3h ago
He was moving laterally and that was a solid shoulder-check
-2
u/Fetal_Release Spurs 1h ago
Look at Sabonis feet. They come together and hit the back of Wembys shoe. Hes off balance.

u/Clemsontigger16 4h ago
Okay then it’s a flop? It’s one of the two
Btw you realize moving your feet is exactly when you’d be most off balance, right?
1
u/Tasty-Army200 2h ago
No clue why you’re being downvoted. Having your feet planted and square give you the most balance, moving feet while shifting will take away your balance.
That said, still embellished it.
6
u/RangerFearless6122 2h ago
Yeah, sabonis is going in one direction, and Wemby takes the other direction. I don’t see a charge tbh

u/Fidelius90 Australia 2h ago
Wemby still put his shoulder into him, should’ve be been an offensive foul

u/Plodzplodz 6m ago
That’s 80 percent of Shaq’s buckets. Shoulder is looked past if you do it fluidly. Big men have been clearing space for themselves this way forever. Anyway Wemby definitely looking stronger, and that spin was quick as a guard
-6
u/DsamD11 Thunder 3h ago
It was not. You can clearly see wemby driving his forearm into sabonis. That is an offensive foul
8
u/Clemsontigger16 3h ago
lol his forearm stays close t on his body, there isn’t anything remotely close to a push off.
Get outta here salty Thunder fans, always got something to say when it’s about your daddy 😂
1
u/miianwilson Jazz 3h ago
I hate the Thunder and that was an offensive foul
1
u/Clemsontigger16 3h ago
It was not, not any forceful movement by the offense is an offensive foul, he didn’t extend the arm, he didn’t load up the shoulder excessively…it looked worse than it was because Sabonis was cross footed and/or he embellished to sell it.
2
u/Justdaman Spurs 3h ago
If you call that "driving his forearm" what would you call SGA's? A flagrant 2? 🤣

u/Instantcoffees Warriors 3h ago edited 3h ago
Wemby used his shoulder even more to dislodge him too
Huh? It's a baby bump. Sabonis is just back-peddling and does not anticipate it so he loses balance on the bump. This is never a foul, regardless of what happened on the other side.
22
u/_Apatosaurus_ Thunder 3h ago
This is never a foul, regardless of what happened on the other side.
Except for the time it was a foul on the other side. It literally was called a foul on Sabonis. Lol.

u/PastaCheed Spurs 4h ago
I think difference is one was set the other was not.

u/CrateBagSoup Pacers 4h ago
There is no “set” in the NBA rule
27
u/ifimnotfound 4h ago
"To get into a legal position, the defender needs to establish himself in the path of the offensive player before contact is made, thus “beating him to the spot,” and before he starts his upward shooting motion."
Establish = set
3
u/imArsenals Slovenia 3h ago
You are allowed to be moving, you just have to be in legal defensive position. Establish and "set" aka feet planted are not the same thing.

u/DolphinRodeo Spain 4h ago
Yeah I can’t fathom how anyone watching this video can possibly think Sabonis is in a legal position. I get that it’s Wemby and its very trendy to criticize everything he does, but nobody who knows the basics of basketball would ever call that an offensive foul
-3
u/ifimnotfound 3h ago
Yeah, idk. Literally, since the dawn of time, refs, coaches, and commentators have used "set" to describe feet placement on players taking a charge, player positioning on defense, and players setting screens ... And they've been called pretty consistently over the past three decades so idk what brother is talking about. It's widely accepted, so much so, that the terminology carried all the way down to grade school way back when lol.
-1
u/DolphinRodeo Spain 3h ago
It’s literally just slightly different phrasing for the exact same thing. Circle jerkers either don’t know anything about basketball or are just pretending not to 🤷♂️

Defender has to beat them to spot and be in legal guarding position
-1
u/CrateBagSoup Pacers 4h ago
Yeah but that’s not set in the way people usually talk about it with the feet planted
I’m not even saying Sabonis here is in legal defensive position, just set isn’t a requirement

Okay we need Adam Silver to address this. Spurs got a demi-god on their roster

I remember being a kid wearing a Yao Rockets jersey in Kentucky thinking he was the shit for simply being this tall.
Who let him move like prime Westbrook at his height? This shouldn’t be allowed lol.
It’s like the alley-oop scene in Semi Pro. Refs gotta call something after this and the self-lob after locking up Sabonis. Shits unfair

He made it to the god damn finals that were clutch time away all games from possibly winning in 5 themselves. He still should get some criticism on his performance but Brunson had so much better help overall in the finals even within his best 4 players.

Lebron was swept in his first finals. These things are bound to happen. It's just a part of growing and life in general.

u/AdministrativeRiot Nuggets 2h ago
Looks like Wendy actually sticks his leg out before throwing is shoulder so he doesn’t actually hit Domas that hard but then he trips over Wemby’s outstretched leg. If Wemby has figured out he’s long enough to just Gumby toss people around the league is cooked.

It’s either a flop or blocking foul. The arm doesn’t come out at all.

Seems like a normal bump with shoulder, arm doesn’t extend at all, seems like Sabonis flopped with it or just lost balance

u/laz10 [DEN] Nikola Jokic 3h ago
I don't think if you just flop you can also generate the force required to propel yourself backwards across the court. I think a very large man ran into him with a lot of force
1
u/itgoesdownandup 2h ago
I feel like you definitely could. Ultimately I guess it depends a lot on the friction or lack thereof between the court and clothes though.

Offensive fouls were supposed to be called more this year lol he just trucked him
2
u/swizznastic 1h ago
Youre only basing that on sabonis' reaction though. Wemby driving hard at a guy and then spinning off him is no different than a smaller guard doing it. Just because sabonis bounced off while losing balance and decided to sell the call doesnt change the actual movement
1
u/Runshooteat 38m ago
The defender beat him to the spot, he dislodged the defender with his shoulder, it is an offensive foul
Sabonis oversold it, yes, still should be a foul and is a foul is most other leagues at most other levels.

Get used to it, Wemby is the new golden child. Can't do anything wrong, started with that playoff elbow.

u/BananaRepublic_BR Spurs 4h ago
Domas already picked up a flagrant against Wemby for a face swipe. 😅
-2
u/AnswerAlert7762 2h ago
This is clearly an exaggerated flop. No, Wemby is not that strong and he barely moved his shoulder. It's just a small bump and you fly 10 feet away?
I don't like this, but I also don't blame him for trying - he just couldn't guard Wemby on the perimeter. But you can't oversell it. Maybe just gamble a steal.
