Can't blame them when you watch season after season of Giannas gathering the ball at the top of the key and walking it to the hoop. They probably think its normal.
27
u/Instantcoffees Warriors 4h ago
Most of the time, he genuinely does the gather step within the legal limit. He's very good at walking that edge and he takes massive steps, which makes it look illegal even when its not. Honestly, people who see this clip here and think it's a gather step are either woefully ignorant on the rules of the sport or just not too bright. The gather step really is not that complex or that flawed.

Well, the better explanation is that steps during a live dribble don't count.
So, the question always is "when could this player no longer legally continue dribbling the ball?" Because when that happens, the player gets two more steps after that, no matter how many steps were taken since the last dribble.

I'll never forget that old video of a ref explaining why Harden doesn't travel. They showed one clip of him clearly taking four steps, and then the ref explains why it isn't a travel...by reviewing a clip of him taking two steps and calling it a gather step.
EDIT: Found the video.

A gather step is not limited to just one step. And if it is, it would be the absolute last step before the 1-2 begins. Again people exposing themselves for being NON-hoopers. I can take as many steps as I want as long as I haven't GATHERED the ball yet. That's what the GATHER STEP was invented for.

1c. Let me start over
1c-a. The pitcher is not allowed to do a motion to the, uh, batter, that prohibits the batter from doing, you know, just trying to hit the ball. You can't do that.
1c-b. Once the pitcher is in the stretch, he can't be over here and say to the runner, like, "I'm gonna get ya! I'm gonna tag you out! You better watch your butt!" and then just be like he didn't even do that.

u/Level_Ticket_9604 2h ago
Balks aren’t as hard as people make them out to be, once you come set you either have to definitively make a move to the plate, over to a base for a pickoff attempt, or step off completely.
If you go to the base for a pickoff as a righty or lefty, your back foot has to leave the rubber first or the same time as the front foot on a pickoff when you’re going to second or the base behind you. If the front foot comes up first, that’s like saying I’m about to pitch the shit to the entire field. For a lefty to first or righty to third, they can’t go home and then over to first. It has to be one fluid motion, but the knee essentially can’t go forward to the plate first; once you begin to break that 90 degree plane from bringing your leg up and leaning forward, you have to go home with the pitch.
Your dominant foot or easier to say the one you will use to launch from the pitchers rubber has to be the one to leave first on a step off from the windup, or you’re making a move to the plate. Same principle for in the stretch, back foot has to come off first. These are fairly straightforward, and the most common that you see. You can’t break the windup or not pitch the ball, that’s also a balk. You can’t twist your body or make a jerky motion once you’re set, that’s also a balk. Some people like to give a little shoulder shrug to keep runners honest, but you can’t really do that either. You kinda have to be statuesque once you come set. Some people get away with a little movement, but for the most part you have to be still.
There are some really obscure ways to get a balk though, I can’t lie. Some are really weird rules from a bygone era, you won’t see them as often as a pitcher having a brain fart and forgetting to step off with their back foot first or trying to fool a base runner with an overzealous pickoff attempt. People been trying to cheat in baseball since it began in the 1800s, that’s why we got all these goofy rules.

People tend to make the explanations too complicated. I think I have a good way to dumb it down.
When it comes to traveling, we have to first accept that any steps during a live dribble do not count. Which begs the question: "When could this player no longer legally continue dribbling?" When watching a replay, answer that question first. Once you establish that point of the play, the prayer gets two steps after that.
And this player took about 4 steps after he could no longer legally continue dribbling. Should have been a travel.
