Kevin Garnett reacts to the Timberwolves retiring his jersey: “They made a motherf**ka wait 10 years… B*tch ass n***as.”

Huh, I thought the rumor was KG refused to have it retired as long as Taylor owned the team. This makes it seem like something else?

What? Taylor isn’t the owner anymore, how is KG bullshitting?
6
u/GopherNutz Timberwolves 3h ago
KG is acting like the reason his jersey isn’t retired is because of the franchise/Taylor. The Wolves have wanted to retire his jersey for years including while Taylor was here, the only hold up has been his holding a grudge against old ownership. This has all been reported on by local media.
8
u/whythehellknot 3h ago
It has also been reported by KG himself specifically saying he didn't want it from Taylor.
5
u/GopherNutz Timberwolves 3h ago
I mean which is entirely understandable, it’s F everything Taylor has going in life, this video above acts like he was forced to wait though which of course is BS
184
u/greyduck0 Timberwolves 8h ago
I think the “they” he’s referring to is Taylor and the previous ownership making him wait (by not selling sooner I guess?) KG has perfectly valid reasons to dislike Taylor but he was 100% the one holding out here, they reached out to him several times to ask about doing a jersey retirement and he refused until our new ownership took over last year
34
u/purplenyellowrose909 Timberwolves 8h ago
If I had a nickel for everytime I have to see someone explain a joke on reddit, I would have been able to buy the Timberwolves from Taylor and retire KG's jersey myself

u/azizinator25 [NYK] Charles Oakley 7h ago
I feel like KG is the type to say "I won't let you retire my jersey while Taylor owns the team" and think "man, I can't believe they're doing me dirty like that"

Maybe I'm wrong, but my understanding was that Taylor is the one who didn't want to do it.
28

Nah KG held a grudge towards Taylor and refused to do it until he sold the team. Pretty sure Taylor promised to let KG buy equity in the franchise and pulled the offer back last second.

KG thought he’d get some ownership role based on what flip told him. glen said that wasn’t true. considering how glen’s deal with arod went and their snafu over similar terms, i’d side with KG.

The previous owner of the wolves when kg played here. Known for 3 things; being cheap, not knowing basketball, and being a bitch. He cost kg basically all of his prime by surrounding him with JAG level talent for the most part, to the point that most twolves fans were happy for kg when he left, cus we knew he would finally get a real chance at a ring once he left
7
u/NBAccount Warriors 5h ago
He left and immediately won DPOY and went to the finals twice. Including finally winning his ring. And Minnesota went from wasting prime KG to wasting prime KLove. Taylor secretly hates power forwards.

How many players have their jersey retired by multiple teams?
And who’s the next player that can achieve this?
12
u/SJCitizen 76ers 7h ago
If the Clippers didn’t hate him for some reason I’d say Chris Paul. He turned the franchise around, and I think New Orleans eventually will retire his number too since they have almost zero history of success and he was the face of their franchise for what little success they had from 2005-2011.

u/Weary-Bonus-1552 7h ago
Lebron is definitely on the way to get 3 retired, Cavs, Lakers, and Heat (Sixers could be if they win a chip)
Shaq has 3 jerseys retired, Magic, Lakers, and Heat
MJ got 2, Bulls and Heat (lol)
kareem has 2, bucks and lakers
wilt has 3, warriors, sixers, and lakers
Moses malone has 2, sixers and rockets
big o has 2, kings and bucks
Barkley has 2, sixers and suns
vince carter has 2, hawks and nets
bill russell has 30
KG is def joining some elite companyin the future id say:
AD with Pelicans and Lakers
Luka will get for Mavericks and Lakers
KAT for Wolves and Knicks
KD for warriors and thunder (if vince carter got his jersey retired by toronto, and shaq got retired by orlando i think KD will too, will take time tho to mend wounds)a
rudy gobert for jazz and wolves (might be my hottest take, but i genuinely think its happening)
8
u/rageking5 7h ago
Kat aint getting one from wolves lol. Gobert probably won't either
-5
u/Weary-Bonus-1552 7h ago
nah, Kat spent a long time there and accumulated enough accolades.
Gobert spent 4 years there so far, and has made 2 WCF’s and won dpoy, he will get ut
2
u/rageking5 7h ago
Kat my favorite player but no. 3 all stars, 2 third team all NBA, ROTY, and a wcf appearance over 9 years. Really didn't have a lot of accolades.
2
u/AzureDragon013 Lakers 3h ago
It's 4 all-stars and all that is actually a lot for a franchise that doesn't have much. Like the wolves have 1 jersey retired and about to have a 2nd with KG.
Jersey retirements aren't just about accolades either. Most of it is really about fan sentiment. And Minny seems to really love KAT and he also seems to love them back. Playing 9 years as a star player for nearly all of it means a lot to the fans too. But I'll leave it up to actual Wolves fans to decide if he deserves a jersey retirement or not.
2
u/Feisty_Coyote 3h ago
I agree its im the context of the franchise. Interestingly, Ant, Melo and Gobert winning a title in the next few years could bump Kat though
2
u/AzureDragon013 Lakers 2h ago
Ant winning a chip would be interesting cause I can see both scenarios where he makes it harder to retire to retire KATs jersey or easier to retire it.
1st scenario is winning a chip raises the bar for jersey retirements. You have to be Ant/Melo level to get it retired and KAT gets bumped like you said.
2nd scenario is fans have greater appreciation for the pre-Ant era that laid the foundations for the chip. Especially with how graceful KAT stepped aside for Ant to become the primary franchise player.
Funnily I dont think Gobert gets his jersey retired in either scenario. Wolves appreciate his skills but I dont think they love him enough to retire his jersey.
1
u/Feisty_Coyote 2h ago
I can see that with Gobert too. My personal feeling is he should - dpoy and more, there foe a while. But he definitely isn't a guaruntee
1
u/AzureDragon013 Lakers 1h ago
Problem with Gobert is the 3rd star rarely get their jersey retired. He'd have to win multiple chips to be considered. Or be as charismatic as Ant so that the fans love him even as the 3rd star.

4 all stars, and that is a lot of accolades for a franchise like the twolves, u nba fans really dont understand jersey retirements.
1
u/jjkm7 Raptors 6h ago
Every other guy on the list has championships mvps or both except Vince (which is partly because raptors and nets just haven’t had a ton of good players). Rookie of the year and a couple of third teams doesn’t really justify a jersey retirement imo
1
u/Weary-Bonus-1552 56m ago
Forgetting the context of the franchise.
Kat with the Wolves and Demar with the Raptors have quite similar accolades, as a raptors fan you should know that.2

Lakers definitely shouldn’t, one ring? lol they aren’t some poverty franchise.
Pau and someone like Fisher are more deserving than him and they aren’t close to it.
Why not retire Rick Fox too while they’re at it.
LeBron will get it simple from a marketing standpoint but even he really shouldn’t.
-1
u/noda237 6h ago
Yall be tossing jersey retirements around like it’s candy. If Lebron gets his jersey retired for ONE ring with the Lakers then everyone’s lost the plot. Jersey retirements should be special, not just given to any star that played for your franchise at some point in their career.
3
u/Spookie_Senpai 6h ago
Lakers were probably going to be like the Bulls of the west for a decade if LeBron didn't sign. No way they get AD without LeBron and then they don't get Luka without AD.
1
u/78ks70aks7to8days 5h ago
I don't think that's true. Lakers had a lot of good young players. Maybe not a ring but they were one big move away from at least being consistently in the playoffs again.
-4
u/noda237 6h ago
He was important for the squad but had nowhere near the impact nor will people remember Lebron as a Laker primarily. How can the Lakers retire the jersey of a player who everyone associates with the Cavs? You need to be a LAKERS legend to get his jersey retired by us, he’s NBA legend. There has to be some exclusivity for exceptional accomplishment or it means nothing.
4
u/Thommywidmer [MIL] Brandon Jennings 5h ago
Winning a ring for the city as a superstar isnt an exclusive group? Fuck outa here lol
3
u/blatant_shill Lakers 6h ago
If you win your team a championship, you're getting your jersey retired. It's really as simple as that. LeBron did that for the Lakers and made All-NBA 5x, so he's getting a jersey retirement.
There are countless other people who have their jersey retired for a team that didn't even do a fraction of what LeBron did for the Lakers.
-1
u/noda237 6h ago
I think that logic makes jerseys retirements meaningless. Lebron is not a LAKERS legend. He will never be remembered as a Laker, he is a Cleveland legend.
3
u/blatant_shill Lakers 5h ago
You're automatically a legend on your team if you lead them to a championship. It doesn't matter if people are going to remember him more for his time on the Cavs than the Lakers. You can say the same thing about the Heat. He did more than enough for every franchise he's played for so far to get his jersey retired by every one of them.
3
u/azadouken Lakers 5h ago
Lebron pulled lakers out of poverty with that chip. Do you not remember how bad it was?
He didnt join a mega team on a roll for years and skate to victory easy peasy.
1
u/North_Atlantic_Sea 6h ago
Nah, they have 13, and if they don't with LeBron, plus Doncic doesn't win more than one, than that's going to be a really long gap from Kobe to whoever is next.
They will also want to be associated with the winning of a top 2 player of all time

2
u/McJuggernaugh7 Warriors 4h ago edited 4h ago
Kawhi didnt force the clippers to sign PG. Kawhi made it clear he wanted PG and the clippers made a decision to get them both as a package deal. They could have just as easily passed on both of them. Nobody put a gun to Balmer's head. The raps got all sorts of shady ass demands from Uncle Dennis including ownership stakes and they reportedly not only said no, but also told the league about it. The Lakers also did the same.
