[Vorkunov] Portland Trail Blazers owner Tom Dundon has floated the prospect of relocation in private talks with league officials and other owners.
As the Portland Trail Blazers and local government officials negotiate the terms of a new lease agreement to refurbish the Moda Center, the prospect of relocation has hung over the city. It is, ultimately, the largest bargaining chip the Blazers and owner Tom Dundon have and what Portland must fear most if the two sides cannot agree to terms.
Negotiations on a remodel and a new lease have been rocky, but the relationship between the franchise and the city seems to have rebounded since it hit a nadir this summer. Dundon even met with city officials this week at a Blazers preseason game, as first reported by The Oregonian and confirmed by The Athletic.
With a looming deadline to make a deal by the end of the year, the Blazers owner told The Athletic that keeping the franchise where it has been for 56 years remains his goal.
“We are working to keep the team in Portland,” Dundon said by text message. “That is the priority.”
That threat of relocation has gone unsaid, at least publicly, in discussions between the Blazers and the city. But Dundon has floated the prospect of relocation in private talks with league officials and other owners, sources with knowledge of the situation told The Athletic. Those sources spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the conversations.
The discussions with NBA officials were not an official request, sources said. Dundon was met with resistance during those conversations, and the league told him to focus on trying to make the Blazers work in Portland, sources said.
Dundon denied any such discussions occurred. “That is not accurate,” he said.

Do not send the blazers to Seattle. We want that rivalry not to steal their team.
26
u/Aromatic-Action-2523 8h ago
As a lifelong blazers fan, I deeply miss hating the sonics. The sonics relocation had forever tainted my ability to enjoy the NBA (bad blazers teams have helped with that tbh) and this would outright kill it.
14
u/Cheap-Kiwi-1312 Supersonics 8h ago
I honestly don't know if I could support the team if we took the blazers. I'll give okc a break because they had nothing so them getting the sonics was incredible for them, I will forever hate okc but not the fans. I would HATE to take the blazers even if it gave us the sonics. Give us an expansion or don't give us anything.

It would be awful. I didn't know anyone other than sonics fans more supportive of a team in Seattle than blazers fans. I wouldn't know how to process the blazers moving up.

u/BlazingSaint Trail Blazers 7h ago
Yeah. I’d straight up have a Joker arc if that happens.

I wouldn't even support the team honestly. I already hate the NBA for taking the sonics but giving us the blazers seems just as fucked up. I love going down to blazers games even if I get shit talked to for wearing Seattle gear, that's what's fun we had a real PNW I-5 rivalry. They took that from us. I wish you guys would also get a baseball team so we could have that.

His entire business model is private equity business.
Buy the thing, preferably treat it like a distressed asset to get a discount on the price. Find ways to get more profit out of it, but ruin the product at the same time. Then in a couple year when he can show profitability, after ruining the blazers, he will show it's profit growth and sell it off to someone else.

when the Clippers hammer dropped, I got into an argument on here with someone that said they'd rather have Dundon as an owner than Ballmer.
the guy who's already basically the cheapest owner in the league + desperately wants to rip the team away from Portland.
49
u/CreatiScope Celtics 8h ago
Yeah, Ballmer was cheating because he cares. Dundon is a fuckhead piece of shit. Shouldn’t have been allowed to buy the blazers.
11

This.
You have to ask how he was allowed to buy the team at the price with suspect financing.
Congress needs to get involved. It’s amazing that Congress can find time to stop student athletes from making money yet can’t seem to find time to stop billionaires from stealing from taxpayers.

u/Remote_Elevator_281 9h ago edited 9h ago
Pretty sure everyone knows that he wants to relocate. He is looking for every excuse to do it.
But it’s near impossible as there is a lawsuit clause in the contract if he does - which he would owe 1.8 to 6.3 BILLION to Portland. Which we know he is too cheap to take a massive hit like that.
He is also a republican, so the idea of him moving to another super liberal city is laughable. That’s part of the reason for him wanting to relocate. He’d want to move to Texas or Carolina.
71
u/pathimself Celtics 9h ago
Considering he’s clearly short on cash, there’s no way he’d pay that.
23
u/karawec403 76ers 7h ago
The city will just have to take payment in the form of his assets. The value of the blazers should cover it.
43
u/spookyghostface Hornets 9h ago
He might want to double check the demographics of Raleigh then. We're not Seattle or Portland but still very blue. Durham even more so.
But also trying to move a pro basketball team into the middle of Tobacco Road is a guaranteed disaster.
21
u/bigtimehater1969 Warriors 8h ago
The reality doesn't matter as much as the optics of moving to a "red" state. It's not actually about moving to a better situation, it's all about virtue signalling.

That will never happen. The owners have to approve any relocations, and letting Dundon move to Seattle means forgoing almost half a billion in expansion fees per team.
25
u/AceMcStace Trail Blazers 9h ago
Also, are we just ignoring that the top bid for the Seattle franchise literally owns Climate Pledge? How would that work for Dundon? He’d have join that ownership group, convince them to drop their bid and rent to him, or build his own arena. Not saying it’s impossible but it’s a weird wrinkle to all of this.

30

Seattle will be either an expansion team or nothing. It’s one of the only remaining markets where a crazy 10b+ expansion fee might be justifiable.

Idk why. No other Seattle bid will work. The leading Seattle one owns the arena. The other one would have to outbid them + spend more to build their own arena and the proposed location is north of Everett

The funniest bit is that if he moved to Seattle he wouldn't own the team's arena, because the city has made it extremely clear the Sonics will play at Climate Pledge Arena. So he'd be losing a bunch of money every season forever.

→ More replies (1)16
u/Lonely-Ocelot-2417 9h ago
I don't think anyone would do it, honestly. Seattle's not like other NBA cities. They've spent almost twenty years self-determining after having their team stolen and the city and state are pretty united that while they WANT their team back it's going to be on their terms, in the arena they already funded, likely with the ownership group that owns the Kraken already. Dundon is almost everything Seattle would abhor. They're like the anti-Cleveland (Cleveland famously bent over and spread their cheeks in terms of stadium funding and municpal decision making in desperation to get the NFL to give them a second Browns franchise almost immediately after Modell relocated the old team to Baltimore). Seattle's got more going on and more franchises to cheer for than to prostitute themselves for a bad deal.
7
u/nativeindian12 Trail Blazers 9h ago
He doesn’t own the Moda center either, the city of Portland does
11
u/Lonely-Ocelot-2417 9h ago
It's a different scenario, though-- while Dundon doesn't own the Moda Center his lease with the city does grant him the majority of the revenue from the arena. In the hypothetical Seattle scenario, he'd actually be paying OUT significant money for the arena to One Roof, as well as granting them a significant portion of the revenue generated at the arena. So yeah, it'd be a bad financial beat for Dundon.

>Under his ownership, both Girondins de Bordeaux and Boavista, as well as Royal Excel Mouscron in Belgium, have been relegated from the top division of their respective leagues into the 4th and 5th tiers of amateur football.[21] On 31 May 2022, Royal Excel Mouscron filed for bankruptcy.[22]
>In mid-July 2026, Girondins de Bordeaux was relegated from the national championships to Régional 1, the sixth tier in French football, due to financial difficulties and failure to meet financial requirements.[23] On 31 July, López sold Bordeaux to British investment firm Sparta Capital Management for a symbolic one euro, after the firm secured the required €10 million to complete a takeover of the club. Bordeaux subsequently sought for reinstatement to the Championnat National 2 through an appeal to the CNOSF.[24]

BUT
This is all just postering to get more money out of the bidders for the Seattle expansion bidders. It’s no coincidence this is the same day as the story about possibly not expanding into Seattle and into Mexico City instead. This is all just posturing by Silver to increase value in NBA franchises and spur more competition in the bidding for expansion into Seattle as its worth is lagging behind the Las Vegas bids.
F Dundon anyway and we should have never given that lousy billionaire a single dime for public money.

The Raiders have had the most expensive tickets in the NFL despite sucking (until this year)
He wants the Blazers in Las Vegas. The NBA has cuddled up to gambling and that will turn Vegas into a top 10 market.
The Blazers are worth 4 billion and it will cost 7-11 billion for an expansion team to go to Vegas. If he can weasel his way in he'll increase his net worth by 3-7 BILLION dollars.
4
u/unikcycle 4h ago
He really wants to move the team to Vegas 100% but I don’t think the league will allow it. It’s worth too much as an expansion. He’s trying to back door cheap his way into Vegas if the stories from this summer are true that he kicked the tires on expansion cost but didn’t like the steep price tag.

It’s sickening. Dudes a billionaire, owns an NHL team, does whatever the fuck else, and his money sitting around is probably making more than most people do in a lifetime. Yet he won’t pony up the money for an arena for a team that will only grow in net worth regardless of where it’s located. He didn’t have to do this shit
5
u/Leroy--Brown 7h ago
It's all because the cost of relocating a team would be cheaper than paying the required expansion fee.
He knew all of this going into it. He knew about the status of the moda center, the necessary repairs before he bought the blazers. He negotiated with the city to pony up cash for renovations, even though only about 10% of those repairs are necessary and structural, while 85-90% of the repairs are to meet luxury high status and box office needs. He negotiated with the city like a piece of shit. And then...... The city agreed to his stupid terms and will pay him. And even after all that this cheap POS still wants to back out of the deal because a relocation fee is cheaper than the expansion fee.
He's bringing the private equity model to the blazers. Fuck private equity. Speaking of private equity ruining things.... Sorry for the future lakers fans, it's about to happen to you guys too.
