PSA Welcome to /r/Nagoya! Please view this post first if you're a tourist

Hello!

As you can imagine, many people visiting this subreddit are tourists, and many of these people have the same or similar questions. The regular contributors to this sub are generous and friendly people, but repeatedly answering the same questions or giving the same recommendations can get a bit tiring. While this subreddit is open to tourists, not only residents, we do ask you to put in a bit of effort on your own as well before posting here.

To help you get the best answer and keep our community's contributions fresh, please search the subreddit – and other tourist-focused subreddits such as /r/JapanTravelTips – prior to posting a question that has likely already been asked in the recent past. https://www.japan-guide.com/ is also a great site to help you plan your Japan trip.

Finally, looking at recent posts on the front page and the links in the sidebar can be a good way to get recommendations and info as to what's going on in our city and surrounding area.

Thank you, and welcome to Nagoya!

Recommendation Restaurant recommendations please

This is my first post so I don’t know if I am this right but going out with a girl, good places to eat in Nagoya? We don’t have any allergies, budget is like 8-10k (preferably on the lower side cry 🙏) yen it’s not really a “date” so please don’t recommend me anything very fancy, preferably in Sakae or around, then if you can recommend a shrine to go afterwards I would appreciate that too 😂

I think that’s everything I need to mention, we don’t have any preference for food but probably not anything that is messy to eat

Spouse visa renewal wait times recently ?

Hi everyone,

I applied for an extension of stay for my Spouse of Japanese National visa in person at the Nagoya Regional Immigration Bureau on September 10th. It has now been over 5 weeks, and I still haven't received the notification postcard (hagaki).

I’ve lived in Japan for quite a long time, and during previous renewals, the whole process was usually very fast (often taking just 2 to 3 weeks).

For those who applied in Nagoya recently , how long did it take for your postcard to arrive?

Are you also experiencing longer-than-usual processing times at the Nagoya office right now?

Thanks!

Just moved to the Nagoya area! Looking for a bicycle and any unwanted household items 🚲

Hi everyone!
I recently moved to Tokoname, Aichi, as I’m starting a new job in the Nagoya area!
I’m currently looking for a bicycle to use for commuting. If anyone has a bike they no longer use or is planning to get rid of, I’d be very grateful!
I’m also looking for some basic household appliances and furniture, such as:
Washing machine
Refrigerator
Microwave
Furniture or other household items
If you have anything you’re planning to throw away, give away, or sell cheaply, please let me know!
I’m happy to arrange pickup if possible.
Thanks so much, and I’m excited to start my new life here! 😊

Recommendation Halloween in Nagoya

Hey all,

Im going to be in Nagoya area for Halloween, its my favorite holiday, so I was hoping to do something fun.

Are there any events or places that do something for Halloween that a foreigner would be welcome at?

I didn't really see anything on the events page on the about section so figured I'd ask the locals.

Really not into clubs but themed bars/restaurants would be cool. Just kind of interested in a nice vibe with people in costumes that enjoy the holiday!

Cheers 🍻

Haven't been to a gig in a while- but this one was OFF THE CHAIN!

For any "Melocore" / "SKA" fans, these bands are pretty tight

Venue: SAKAE PARTY'Z

Date: 11th Nov 2026

Bands: HUGRE (MIE), CHARLIE (AICHI), and BECAUSE I LOVE IT (FUKUOKA)

Whole article: https://baddecisionsjapan.com/partys-sakae-three-great-bands-one-very-loud-night/

For those in the TLDNR realm: Bands were great, but too loud... Maybe the fault of the venue? Sound engineer? Who knows!

ADHD / Medication in Nagoya

I replied to a post in another thread here but thought I should share these observations in a separate post for local international residents of Nagoya seeking treatment for ADHD:

There is a lot of confusion about Concerta and who can prescribe it. Additionally there have been supply issues.

To break it down, your doctor has to have a special license to prescribe methylphenidate (Concerta) in Japan. Many psychiatrists simply don’t want the hassle (I assume.)

The supply issue is nuanced. Over the past year pharmacies have run out of stock at various points. Sometimes they they only have 18mg doses available, sometimes only 27… etc.

Sometimes none at all.

However there always seems to be some pharmacies who have it while some regularly run out. It is a whack a mole situation.

Here is where it gets a bit political.

While most psychiatrists who have a license can still prescribe it, the pharmacy that fills the prescription for their clinic (hospital etc), can run out.

Most psychiatrists do not have a financial or contractual agreement with the pharmacy that supplies medications to their patients.

However the clinic - pharmacy relationship is implied. Other pharmacies may resent another psychiatrist sending patients with Concerta prescriptions to them because they want to serve their regular customers.

Note: Vyvance does not seem to be disrupted by supply issues. However as mentioned elsewhere in this thread, you must be diagnosed with ADHD and prescribed it in Japan before you become 18. That’s a rule.

Other suggestions for ADHD in include trying a non-allergenic diet as well as eliminating processed foods and surgery drinks and desserts etc.

Good promise has been shown by combining Omega 3, DHA and GLC with a daily dose of vitamin B. Other supplements to consider are L-tyrosine, magnesium glycinate among many others.

None of this is clinical advice. Just observed information

Recommended hotel: Nishitetsu Croom

I know a lot of people ask for hotel recommendations here and I used it a lot before my recent trip so wanted to give back.

Stayed in Nishitetsu Croom, it's just past Chubu tower in Sakae. Was slightly more expensive than other options but the rooms were well designed and not plain or boring. The lobby was lovely and smelled amazing.

But best of all the breakfast was Nagoya themed and so I had hitsumabushi, red miso soup, ogura toast etc each morning.

Probably one of the best hotels I've stayed at in recent years and highly recommend it!

Help Nagoya car owners

Hi! Just want to ask if by any chance does anyone know a reliable and non-bank breaking shop that does paint jobs?

My car is old and because of the summer heat the clear coating on the roof and hood is already showing signs that it will start peeling soon. I don't think it will survive the next summer season too.

The car is still in good condition plus I can't afford to replace it. That's why I'm wondering if repainting can be an option.

Thank you!
