My very loved dog Leeson is reactive.
He has 3 triggers, which I think are all understandable considering his breakdown. His first trigger is having anything inside his ears, the second is dogs and lastly electric scooters.
To clarify each trigger, he has sensitive ears and struggles with chronic ear infections, he's learnt having his ears cleaned or having ear drops put in results in pain so will react with aggression if me or the vets try and get inside his ears. He's happy having the outside of his ears touched and will ask for ear scratches when he's itchy but if it's inside his ear you have to be very cautious as he can quickly snap if he feels he's going to get hurt, this is scary because I have to clean his ears regularly to prevent infection but he anticipates it will hurt causing him to tense which makes me flinch because I'm expecting a warning snap, we're working on it but I am concerned. He's never bitten me yet but I've been nipped and snapped at enough that I'm anxious.
I know why he's dog reactive too. When he was 3 he was herded into a corner and attacked by 2 dogs. This was nearly 5 years ago so we've worked really hard to work through his dog fear but he's very unpredictable around dogs so I tend to walk him where I can avoid them which is a shame because we used to love going out to dog friendly cafes together.
Again I know why he's triggered by electric scooters. He was rammed by one when he was young and has disliked them ever since.
I try my best to work around his triggers so he can live his best life but I'm scared we're one accident away from disaster. I brought this up with his vet when he was being seen for his ear infections and the vet said, he uses a muzzle at the vets. Why not out in public. I think it's definitely somthing to explore but my 2 concerns are first the cost of a good quality proper muzzle and the second are the potential of being harassed for having a muzzled dog in public
I'd love to know more about what's its like having a dog who's muzzled and where to find the right one for Leeson.
I want to do what's best for leeson but I'm quite anxious myself and worried what's the right thing for him. I have a neurology disorder which affects my mobility (I'm a wheelchair user) and the way I think (learning disability) so I know I couldn't react quickly in the event of emergency so I feel like a preventive measure will help both of us.
