Advice Needed I have 45minutes to pack from arrival time

Hello, this is my first post here, and I have a pretty important question that requires some background info:

I filed a restraining order against my husband, but he still lives in our shared apartment. Since he has no transportation and no job currently, it was easier for me to leave when I was scared to death of him. I am at the point where I need to get some of my belongings back, and how much I can get largely hinges on the abilities of a moving company.

I have talked with law enforcement about the possibility of this happening, and they basically said I would have a good 30, maybe 45 minutes that they're willing to be on standby on the premises to keep him away from me to not break the restraining order, but not much more than that. My bulkiest and heaviest items are my boss, which I've collected for most of my adult life, but there are electronics like gaming systems and a TV I'd like to take, too. Also clothing, but much of that can be replaced.

First of all, is this even a thing? I know some companies can pack your place up for you, but I'm not packing up my place, per se, even though I own like 90%of the stuff in the apartment.

I would need a company that's willing to work very flexibly with both me and law enforcement, given the severe time constraints, and I really have no idea of the state of the apartment, seeing as it's been left to the devices of a seriously unhappy human.

Comments would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

*ETA: I was officially able to hire a company! šŸŽ‰ I was able to hire an officer to basically "keep the peace", got an official time slot set up, and got some movers hired for the same time! I didn't even know they were able to schedule with led than 48 hours notice. They were VERY understanding about my situation, and basically said that they've dealt with all walks in life and as long as they had warning, they were cool with it. I'm actually excited for the first time in months and not filed with dread!!

Discussion Broker vs Non-Broker, what's the difference?

hi, i hope i'm posting in the right place mods feel free to remove if this isnt the right place.

TLDR; i'm getting ready to move in few months and when i'm reading about moving companies i'm getting confliciting information about moving companies that are brokers vs not brokers. i'd like to understand from people who work as professional movers what's the difference? is one better than the other?

so i’m moving my 1 bedroom apartment in like 3 months and i thought i was being a responsible adult by starting early but literally every search is a nightmare. i keep seeing people talk about brokers vs not brokers and i literally cannot tell the difference when i’m on these websites. they all look the same!! theres lots of info on this sub, and from googling and asking ChatGPT about moving companies but some stuff says brokers are normal companies but other stuff says they are nothing but thieves looking to take advantage and steal all my stuff and take all my money. i dont have a lot of stuff or money and would really like to keep as much of it as possible.

i have a million questions im hoping you can help me figure this out...

  • how am i supposed to know if i’m talking to a broker or not broker when they both say "nationwide moving services" in big bold letters?
  • is there a name for the not broker people or all they all just types of brokers?
  • all these places ive talked to want lots of money right now (they call it a deposit?? is that right??) but then i read on a thread that if they ask for a big amount of money, they’re probably a broker just taking their cut before they even find a truck?
  • im seeing people on here say they paid the deposit and after their stuff was picked up they demanded a ton more money and said the amount they gave was just an estimate.... ike, i have a normal amount of stuff?? it’s a 1 bed not a warehouse!! is this normal?? is there anything i can do to avoid this??? like i dsaid i dont have a lot of stuff and really dont want to lose it or my money

what am i not understanding? am i stupid adn this is something most people know? help me out chat!

Experience, Tips & Discussion Packing has come to a halt

We are first time home buyers! And closing is October 30th. We had a 45 day closing instead of a typical 30 day. I have done the majority of the ā€œeasyā€ packing. Things that have a clear place or category (I’m also an organizational freak). Financially it’s gonna suck, but we have the luxury of a slow move in, because our apartment lease isnt over till the end of January. I KNOW I’ve done a lot already, however I feel like I’ve just scratched the surface. We still have a ton more stuff to pack up. I just don’t know where to go from here. Should I just chill, and enjoy the slow move-in? Is the idea of three month moving window not as much time as i think it is?

Packing & Supplies How to pack boxes for a pod when it'll go cross-country and then be in storage?

I'll be moving from New York to Northern California in November with PODS, then the pod will be stored in their Oakland warehouse for ~1-4 months. I'm confused about how to pack, especially to avoid mold, and am having a hard time finding consistent advice.

I have clothing, books, kitchen items, an instant pot, a nutribullet, a computer monitor, and a few other small electronics, plus a few pieces of furniture.

This is my plan/unknowns so far:

  • It sounds like the general advice for furniture is to wrap them in moving blankets, then secure that with plastic wrap.
  • Kitchen items will be wrapped in bubble wrap, placed in cardboard, then I'll fill the voids with paper. I was thinking I'd maybe wrap some things in paper, and then bubble wrap, but not sure if that would be necessary. I'd throw a desiccant in there, but I'm not as concerned about these items.
  • I have the original cardboard box and styrofoam for my monitor, so I'd use that with some sort of desiccant. Not sure what type/size though.
  • What do I do with my clothing and books? Do I wrap some things in plastic bags with a desiccant, then put that inside the box? Or only pack things in paper and use desiccants? Any recommended desiccant brands/capacity?
  • Hang 2-3 desiccant strips from the walls.

I have mostly cardboard boxes, but do have a few airtight plastic Ezy Storage tote boxes. There is nothing on the PODS website about how to pack for something like this move, and the staff on the phone couldn't give me specific advice. So any suggestions and tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Costs & Money Cross country - to sell or to keep?

My boyfriend and I planning on moving in 2027. This was kinda an unforeseen move, so we had bought new furniture, a mattress, bed frame, and a big loveseat, with the intention of staying put for a while. We just finished paying these items off so therefore they're still pretty new and they are pieces we intended on keeping for a while obviously. I am reading some contradicting things about whether or not it's worth it to try and sell these items at no doubt less than we bought them for, or to relocate with them and pay for the cost of moving with bulky items. For more context, we live in a studio, so these are the only large pieces of furniture we have, and we dont have multiple rooms worth of things we're bringing. I'm honestly just looking to do this the most INEXPENSIVE way possible. We are not well off financially. Thank you so much in advance!!

We have no pets, so no worries there! Thank you so much in advance

We decided to drive my husband's car and not mine cuz it's older, and we just put new tires on mine. Thank you in advance.

Storage Advice on storage container

Hello! I am going away for 6 months and have rented a storage container in the northeast of England, I’ll be gone from November - May. I have packed all of my things (books, clothes, bedding) in plastic containers taped tightly shut with desiccant packages in them (about 10 per container).

The company said:

ā€œOur storage containers are kept indoors within our secure warehouse. The warehouse is dry and weather-protected, but it is not heated or temperature controlled, so the internal temperature will naturally vary with the seasons. During colder winter periods the warehouse can fall below 10°C."

I’m getting worried about mold damage - especially to the books. Does anyone have experience with a similar situation? Would vacuuming packing things be better - or would you recommend not putting them in at all and leaving them at a friends?

Thank you!

Help! Move Went Wrong Where could boxes possibly be? Multiple not delivered

My absolute nightmare happened with an interstate move - the moving company we hired, Triple 7 Movers, lost double digit boxes. This is my first time move and I honestly feel taken advantage of. That’s not the point of this post though…

I’m desperate to know. Where could our items be if not in some warehouse owned by the moving company? All I want is my stuff back and so far I’m getting zero indication from the company that they looked, will look, or care anymore now that they’ve been paid. They’ve made their offer to cover the cost of lost items, and that’s about it. No explanation on how they got lost.

For context I’ve submitted documentation to the moving company, contacted my renters insurance, submitted to FMCSA, and contacted BBB (at the suggestion of Claude).

ultimately my goal is to get my stuff back. I’m perplexed given every item has a company-issued barcode which I can only assume is scanned as it gets transferred between wherever during the move.

Where can I start? Has anyone been successful in getting their remaining boxes back? What do movers do with remaining boxes - auction them? Sell them? appreciate insights from any success stories.

Hiring Movers Services that could help an elderly hoarder downgrade?

I have an elderly relative who has a house that is a ton of stuff all over. It is a absolute mess. They want to move to a smaller home but they complain that the stuff is too dusty for them to touch (which sets off their allergies) and they struggle physically to spend much time packing before becoming exhausted due to a leg issue.

They need someone who can help them sort, dispose of, and pack their things as directed but due to the volume, may be at it for several days/weeks.

Are their services for something like this? I am not sure what to even google for their area as it is not a typical mover that they need.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Packing & Supplies How to pack organization baskets, containers, etc for cross country trip?

Hi all,

We’re moving out of state and I have a bunch of plastic and fabric organizational items. They range from drawer organizers to larger baskets. I’m not sure where to start when it comes to packing these. Can anyone give some advice? Like do I consolidate these into their own boxes and should I layer a linen sheet or something in between to prevent breakage?

Thank you in advance!

Hiring Movers PODS/PackRat vs Shared trailer like United Van Lines/FlatRate

We are moving from the PNW to Florida and are considering using PackRat or U Haul U Box vs some shared 53’ trailer with someone like flat rate moving or united van lines (who is expensive) . What are the pros and cons of them? The folks who help load should also be able to disassemble some pieces of furniture and wrap some items. Then do the reverse at the destination.
We are discarding most of our stuff, but still might have enough for a 14’ or 16’ pod or 1/4th of a 53’ trailer.

Hiring Movers what happens if a mover ignores your binding estimate at delivery?

Threads about delivery day price changes always end with "should have gotten a binding estimate." What actually happens if you have one and they try to charge more anyway. Legal recourse, or is the document just paper.

Help! Move Went Wrong Movers definitely damaged items but will not admit it

Post image
0 Upvotes

I hired movers to move my couch, bed, 2 nightstands and a desk. They charged me 1200 dollars. First when I booked at least a month and half prior to my moved they promised they would arrive at 930 am when I first booked them. Then the week before that changed to 10 am because they had another moved to onload. At this point I was like yes sure whatever. But then the day of 10 am passes now they’re saying 10:30 am. Well they didn’t arrive till after 11 am.

Once arrived they loaded everything up and didn’t wrap everything inside but did once they got outside to the truck. So once we arrive at my new house they unpack everything and at point a mover hits the wall with the bed and says oops it’s fine though. So I assumed there was no damage.

Now two days later when finally making this bed I see this damage. The headboard has clearly been dragged or hit a wall. Then the side railing has been scraped almost the entire length and there’s a gauge taken out of it.

So I email explaining the damages and how I know this had to be during the move because I bought this furniture less than a year ago and it has not been taken apart since delivery. The owner replies with an actual AI generated response that says ā€œWhile I can’t say for certain when or how the marksĀ occurred, there are several possibilities, including blemishes or damage that may have happened during manufacturing, the original packaging, handling, or assembly process, as well as through everyday use or contact with pets.ā€

I followed up with the other mover, who assisted with your move, and he was confident that nothing he or I carried made any substantial contact with walls, doorways, or other items during the move. We also took utmost care to protect your furniture by individually wrapping each item inside the trailer with moving blankets and straps to ensure that no damages would occur during transportation.ā€

I find this very hard to believe to be original damage considering I just had replacement nightstands delivered last week from pottery barn since they were damaged during transit and the delivery driver put in a request for a replacement immediately. So if the bed was framed wouldn’t have they caught that in the photos too? And if I had seen something I would have called pottery barn or told them that on that day.

And I don’t think the everyday use excuse is valid when this is less than a year old and the damaged areas are pretty low traffic. And I don’t think my 20 pound dog is able to reach the top of the head board?

I am a little frustrated that the movers have now said they didn’t have the walls when I actually witnessed it at least twice. They have not provided any contract nor did I sign anything after the move was complete to verify the items were in good shape. I haven’t received an invoice either. I never received anything that told me their protocols for damage. I asked if they had taken photos of the damage and or items in general before moving and got no response.

Is there anything else I can? According to Google you have a certain number of days to report damage to the company.

DIY, Pods & Truck Rental Cheaper way to relocate stuff from POD?

We have our stuff in a 16' POD in California and need to have it moved to the Midwest. The quote is so expensive that I'm wondering if there are cheaper alternatives. It would need to include offloading/loading out of the POD without having me (or a personal representative) be physically there. Any suggestions?

Hiring Movers I need your opinion

I am moving about two hours away. I will need to hire movers but I am just wondering if it would be more convenient and affordable to hire 2-3 ppl to help me load my stuff onto a uhaul, drive the uhaul myself and hire movers to help me unload at my new location, instead of hiring movers here and having them drive all the way to my new location if that makes sense. I don’t have a lot it would just be two sofas and a bedroom set. What do you guys think? Thank you in advance.

Where Should I Move? What to do on weekend trips that are intended to explore where we relocate to?

Husband retires in 3 years. We will purchase property in about 2 years and are starting to research now. We are looking at PA, VA & West VA. We are in NJ now and have our first weekend trip to explore a town in PA this upcoming weekend.

These aren't normal weekend trips to just have fun, so what the heck should we do exactly? Drive around residential neighborhoods? Looks for things to do? Talk to people? What are some things we should ask people if we strike up a conversation?

If you moved, what are some things you would have asked locals beforehand? What are some things you wish you knew about your neighborhood / area that you could have asked beforehand?

Thanks...

Hiring Movers Company comparisons

Allied van lines quoted $11000 for a love from Minnesota to Florida. Mostly household items - only furniture being 2 50ā€ tv’s, 2 queen mattresses, 1 queen frame with headboard, 1 queen box spring with frame, 1 night stand, 1 small ~7cubic foot freezer.
American van lines quoted $5400 for the same thing…? Is this normal?
Allied did an in-home walk, American did a virtual.

Where Should I Move? Leaving OK

Me and my husband (25M) are wanting to leave our home state of OK. It's so hard deciding where!! We love nature, hiking, socializing. Would love mountains/hills, prettier landscape. Would love to be somewhere with all 4 seasons. We've thought about CO since it isn't a bad drive from family, but we're worried it's too expensive and overpopulated. I'm a hairstylist and would have to start my clientele over completely. My husband is a musician who has recently decided to stop touring and find a different career. We have 2 dogs. More left leaning. Give us all of your favorite recs!! TIA!!

Costs & Money High value items questions!

I need some advice. I’m hiring movers a long distance move and I have a very expensive handbag collection. I’m trying to decide the best way to get my bags to the destination. Of course, when I went to UPS to inquire, they told me not to put them on a moving truck. But the guy I talked to at the moving company said putting them on the truck would be safest. He said you can buy extra insurance for the items, it makes me nervous because I’ve heard of just regular items going missing from moving trucks. I am asking for advice and or recommendations from anyone who has ever moved with high-value items. Thanks!

DIY, Pods & Truck Rental Ubox question

Im moving from az to wi. Step 1 of my move is, or was, to put most of my stuff in a uhaul box and have them drop it off at my place in wi.

But apparently they wont just drop it off, I have to pay an extra $400 to have someone unload it on site?

Wtaf? Has anyone experienced this before? Is this something I can negotiate?

Not only do I not want strangers touching my stuff, I wont be there to watch.

Is my only option to store the box at their place until I get there?

Thanks

Costs & Money How do you afford to go to the coast from the Midwest?

I would love to move somewhere coastal with my family preferably west coast, but I worry about affording the cost of living with it being so much higher than the Midwest.
