Demonstration This Isn't Android: My OnePlus Pad 4 Runs Arch Linux, heavy Android Games and a 200Hz external monitor

My OnePlus Pad 4 now runs Arch Linux with Denial and Droidloom, turning an Android tablet into a fully functional Linux desktop!

After the sadness of hard-bricking the first OnePlas Pad 4 I found the courage to try again, and the result is amazing!

I spent the last 3 months working on Droidloom and Denial, I have been working on them each and every day, trying many different devices and computers. All this effort is paying out, no compositor can give me this amazing experience!

And I have no intention to stop.

In this video, I demonstrate:

  • Native Linux applications, including Kitty
  • Android games, including Arknights: Endfield, running through Droidloom
  • Google Play Store running directly within the Linux environment (Endfield has been installed from it)
  • 1440p @ 200Hz external display hotplug support
  • Keyboard & touchpad mode: the tablet becomes a full-screen keyboard and multitouch touchpad when connected to an external monitor
  • Dual-display mode: the tablet's own screen becomes a secondary monitor instead

All of this runs on Arch Linux, with Denial as the Wayland compositor and Droidloom providing Android application compatibility.

It also supports controller and external mouse and keyboard, just like a normal desktop it has no limitation.

News Luma Mobile (Alpha 1) is officially available!

We've been building Luma, a desktop / tablet / mobile OS with Apple-like continuity across different devices. Today Luma Mobile (the first Alpha version) is finally available for download.

It officially supports the Fairphone 6 - we are working on the Pixel 9 family and expect it to release next week (and a few interesting others!). HOWEVER, porting Luma to different devices is surprisingly easy assuming the devices themselves are willing to play ball. We encourage technical folks to use the guides on the website to try porting it to other devices today!

We will be announcing a giveaway/contest later today to the tune of $1,000 regarding ports (a sort of 7 day sprint contest where we give $250 to 4 random successful mobile ports completed by next Friday).

Anyway, we'd love for you to check out Luma, submit bug reports and make feature requests! Let us know what you think!

Discussion Complete beginner wanting to port postmarketOS to a Samsung Galaxy F23 5G. Where do I even start?

I have an old Galaxy F23 5G (SM-E236B) that I can't sell. It has a replacement screen and a broken mic. Instead of letting it sit in a drawer, I want to use it to learn how getting Linux running on a phone actually works.

What I know: I'm comfortable with regular Linux. I use it daily and run a small homelab with a few servers.

What I don't know: Pretty much anything about phones at a low level. I've never built a kernel for a device or ported anything. I've already unlocked the bootloader, and that's about as far as I've got.

The phone:

Snapdragon 750G (SM7225)

6.6" LCD (aftermarket, so maybe not the original part)

Last official update was Android 14 / One UI 6

From some reading, I understand the Fairphone 4 uses the same chip and already runs postmarketOS. I'm hoping that makes this more doable than it sounds.

My questions:

What should I learn first? Are there concepts or guides I should read before touching the phone?

Is the Fairphone 4 work actually useful to me, and how would I go about using it?

Are there Samsung-specific gotchas a beginner usually runs into?

How long did your first port take, and what do you wish you'd known starting out?

My end goal is a working phone UI someday. I know that's a long way off, and I'm mostly here to learn. The phone is expendable, so I don't mind breaking it. Any pointers are appreciated!

Discussion Linux On HONOR

Hello, I love using the terminal and customizing my system, but on Honor Play 20A it's not good enough. We don't have the full settings, we don't have a terminal, and we can't customize the other screen enough. I hope you see my comment and update the system with support for that.

I was curious to see how far this would go – and I was very pleasantly surprised. I now have a full featured, modern podcast, an updated version of Heebo and even Doppelkopf.
Anyone interested?
