So, I'm 20 and got into cassettes back in lockdown. This year I ventured out from tapes, CDs etc into MiniDisc. I built a hifi out of separate components. My CD deck is the Sony CDP-XE310 and the minidisc deck is the Sony MDS-JE510. Now I got the CD player because it was a bargain and it did work perfectly when I first got it. I thought it was an amazing bonus it had that big sticker on the front saying "Optical Digital Out for MD"
I can control the CD deck via the MiniDisc remote when both are powered on, and obviously when recording CDs to MDs it auto sets the recording level and adds track markers.
Recently my CD deck has been acting up and I believe it's beyond my capabilities to repair which isn't a big loss since it was quite inexpensive. However my question is, if I bought another Sony CD deck with optical out. Would I have the same features (using MD remote to control it, auto audio level set etc)

Probably goes without learning for some people more meticulous than I, but after purchasing players (versus portable recorders), BATTERY LIFE
I got this SJ-SW9MD because I loved the design and the neat wrist/arm strap that came with it. Seemed like the perfect, sturdy, commute-to-work player.
It uses a ni-mh gumstick battery. These. Things. Suck. I think I get like 5 hours if the battery stays in the player? I’ve been taking it out when I arrive to work now to try and save on power. Even with investing in a higher quality charger that can measure voltage, leak, discharge etc, it’s a hassle to manage these batteries.
Definitely will consider battery life of later plays who could more efficiently run on the gumsticks, or better yet AAs (like my NF610, but I don’t wanna take the recorder everywhere and risk damaging the write head).
Best players for battery life v aesthetic v function v sound quality?

Got this new in 1999. It's a little worse for wear, and I can't find the headphone remote, but it's still going strong.
Sound quality through my Sennheiser Momentum 4s is just as good as lossless M4As from my iPad.
I used to have a tonne of minidiscs, and a car minidisc head unit, but they got stolen from my car circa 2002. 😢 Now I just have one disc, with On The Night by Dire Straits.

Hey peeps, decided to grab a second hand minidisc. Cant seem to get anything going on it.
Ive tried Web Minidisc with no success. Ive installed Zadig drivers for windows 11. Recived a couole of error messages which could offer some insight. "RequestDevicr on USB: Must be handling a user gesture to show a permission request" and "libusb_error_not_supported"
Now windows sees it as a mass storage drive and i am able to add and remove files through windows. Ive copied a WAV file on but the walkman simply didnt see it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated 😊

I was hunting for MD players but had no luck but found some sealed MDs I didn’t get the Maxell 10packs cuz most of my discs are clear so I got the black Sony shock absorb ones and of course I had to buy all three 😄

I posted a while ago about a killer MiniDisc collection I was asked to catalog/photograph/eventually sell... And I finally had the time to get them all listed!
I have 36 individual titles, most are complete, a handful are missing the inner booklet but all have the original cases AND all the discs themselves are in AWESOME shape!
I also have three black zippered MiniDisc cases full of the recordable type (already recorded on but I am told you can re-record over them like CD-RW), as well as two packs of the Sony multicolored new blanks.
SO with that being said - I'm not quite sure how to go about this as far as Reddit goes - but figured this would be the best place to let ppl who already obviously enjoy this format know about the listings... so maybe someone can help me out a bit with guidance -
I see that direct links to my listings are not allowed - should I just post a general list of the titles I have and if anybody's interested, they can direct message me & then I can provide them a link there? I just don't know what's appropriate and wanna be respectful while at the same time letting the people who might appreciate these be aware of them.
Thanks everyone! ❤️

I am a person who has attended UK PonyCon every year since 2022. A few times I've made custom GBA Video Carts for the Charity Auction as donated items, which raised a few hundred pounds overall for the RDA (Riding for the Disabled Association).
This year I'm donating 4 custom MiniDiscs to the auction. I've designed and printed J-card sleeves for the cases, using the CD art, and I've ripped and burned my own physical CDs to make these items. I've also reached out to someone from the MiniDisc community for custom disc stickers, which are on the way.
Here are some photos of the first print of one of the J-cards. By printing it, I was able to find a couple of things that need adjusting, which I have managed to fix for my second print attempt. But what do you think of the idea as a novelty item for a convention?
For some added context, here is a YouTuber who bought one of my GBA video carts doing a review of it to show how these items are niche and unique and not made to profit, but to raise money for charity.

I got this cheap as a faulty device, with a hope I might be able to get it working.
With power the disc spins up, the laser head moves to try focus, but the sled doesn't move.
I initially thought it could be the cracked gear thing, but taken apart if I spin the motor by hand it all works, it's just quite stiff in parts. The threaded rod does look a bit grimy.
I'm thinking clean the road with IPA, get some lithium grease and try moving things by hand until it feels free? Should I open up the gearbox and do the same in there? The motor pinion and gear next to it don't look to have been greased originally.

Hey everyone,
I recently picked up a Victor JVC NX-TC5-B Compact Component MD Player and noticed something odd with video playback. The unit is supposed to handle WMV files, but here’s the issue:
So my questions are:

getting "Error uploading to device. There might not be enough space left, or an unknown error occurred."
tried changing encoder to remote... delete TOC on disc as well as cache on deck .. same error... always at the end of the copying of the first track... Track name is not too long.... also tried different USB cable and ports....any idea

Here's a fun little timecapsule. My brother and I each received an MZ-R70 from Santa way back in 99-2000 timeframe. I got the silver one, he got the blue one... I used my silver one quite a bit, as at the time I had friends that were using them as well, and we traded discs-- but he didn't use his much. 26 years later, we dug through some old bins at his new place and this was unearthed.
Still plays perfectly, just needed a fresh eneloop battery. Beauty condition to boot!

So a friend of mine has given me some Avery labels and asked me to do this artwork for her. First time I've had to do something like this and in Hi-MD audio 352kbps. Will be putting these on the 3d printed cases I do... Hopefully she'll like it!!!

I designed the labels myself, printed them on sticker paper, cut it with a board, and carefully aligned the stickers just so.
The design works really well with the translucent purple shell, and I’m quite happy with this.

I got into minidiscs (almost mistyped as “mini-dicks”) the same way I got into obsolete handhelds and homelabbing - my childhood.
Somehow, at age ~18, I was given a single blank purple iMac colored Sony 80. I kept this blank disc for over 20 years, without an MD player.
It sat in a display of gaming handhelds for years until I was looking for something and found it.
I’m a software/hardware engineer that does refurbishing, so I ended up on EBay looking at MD recorders. My first impression was that used MD kit was in the worst condition I’ve ever seen used electronics in as an entire genre - everything was scratched or scuffed or broken.
Little did I know that THESE PLAYERS ARE FRAGILE AS HELL.
I managed to find a used MZ-N10, got a USB-C adapter, and was able to connect to NetMD on Linux on PlatinumMD.
I tried to load some MP3s onto said purple disc, then didn’t like the selection so I erased the disc.
Now I’m getting READ ERR. Tried to use the service menu, but my jog dial gave out. Can’t erase the disc. Ordered more discs.
Opened it up and the flex cable to the jog dial has literal burn marks on it and looks like it was cut - way shorter than it’s supposed to be.
This is all over one week. I guess my childhood disc is now scrap ☹️
I’ve just replaced it with an MZ-NH700. Let’s see if I dont demolition derby this one too lol
