Somebody climbed up on the inside, got to the roof, tied off a rope, repelled down, painted it, and climbed back up

Massive effort but massive street cred lol

They're going to build the facade right over it, so it'll likely stay there hidden for the rest of the buildings life. Like some builders who write funny things behind the walls for renovators to find years later

u/lilaccheesecake 4h ago

I mean hell, people leave shit in the buildings frames when constructing it.

Most famous example was the twin towers. When they collapsed, archivist found quite a few things hidden into pockets (I think where joists were) of the steel frame. Like a 60s era newspaper detailing Judy garlands death.

Shit, theres stuff written all over the insides of the casinos where management won't go. All the rigging areas are covered in bathroom graffiti.

4

u/gfunk84 1h ago

I knew casinos were rigged.

3

u/s0ciety_a5under 1h ago

That's the neat part, everything is rigged at some point.

57

u/diddyblumpkin 7h ago

Do they do this at night?

77

u/poixninja 7h ago

Probably yeah

59

u/dtoddh 7h ago

Usually very early AM, when security is most likely minimal.

53

u/fastattaq 7h ago

or plot twist: the nighttime security guys got bored and did it themselves.

17

u/dtoddh 7h ago

Definitely could be that. Or they were paid to help the artists.

Or maybe even the builders allowed it to happen for free media exposure.

21

u/Correct_Pen9675 7h ago

The climb back up is the part that gets me, going down on rope is one thing but hauling yourself back up after all that is a whole different beast

imagine doing all that and then misspelling the tag at the bottom lol

must have been wild up there with nobody around, just wind and the city below

20

u/rainstorm0T 7h ago

judging by the fact that there's 3 tags, i'd assume there were at least 2 other people there to help, and they took turns.

13

u/OGcrayzjoka 7h ago

If they know what they are doing and have the right gear, climbing up isn’t much harder than climbing a rope ladder. I used to do rope access work.

3

u/DaoFerret 6h ago

Judging by the open spots on the sides of the column, would they even have had to climb back up, instead of going “horizontally” and climbing back in on either that floor or one below?

Or do they just do something like a Bosun’s Chair and take turns?

1

u/abofh 5h ago

It feels like the middle guy might have overestimated the length of their rope

3

u/Kanoa 5h ago

Nah I think they used the swing stages the construction crews use.

0

u/poixninja 5h ago

Very possible, but overall same concept

1

u/Kanoa 5h ago

Well yes, but a swing stage and manual rappelling and climbing are an order of magnitude different in effort.

1

u/ChineseNoodleDog 3h ago

Is it possible it was done on the ground before it was lifted up?

1

u/DPAWL87 1h ago

I worked here before the hotel construction was put to a halt. This happened well after topping off. It’s a famous street artist.

1

u/judgejuddhirsch 1h ago

Or they used a drone

-12

u/Dommichu 7h ago

Yep! They already have been arrested.

I have an alley cam and everytime someone complains about young punks being the bane of our society… I point examples of the ages of these knuckle heads.

https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/downtown-la-graffiti-vandalism-arrests-lapd/3956719/

16

u/chipskylark123 7h ago

This is the new Ballys casino in Chicago. Completely unrelated.

2

u/ThePowerOfStories 7h ago

Next time, they’ll avoid arrest by having the drones do the graffiti instead of just the filming.

-7

u/Cloud_N0ne 6h ago

No amount of street cred will make this any less stupid tho. Risking life and limb to vandalize shit with their “art”.

153

u/Bolu_Cod1106 7h ago

I'm more impressed by the logistics of getting up there than the actual art

61

u/Crimkam 7h ago

The difficulty in the logistics of placing the graffiti is part of the whole scene man

8

u/AnotherDempsey 7h ago

Isn't that the point of the post?

-11

u/fakelogin12345 6h ago

A tag is art?

0

u/TheFrenchSavage 6h ago

Ugly art but still art. The bar is quite low, you can shit in cans and that would still be art.

25

u/Stinkytzatziki 7h ago

This is in Chicago. It’s the Ballys Casino off the river.

2

u/UAtraveler1k 7h ago

Did they open Halsted yet?

1

u/Rowdy_Rudy 4h ago

Nope. I work nearby but they look like they are ready to pave the street again so hopefully soon. They have the curbs already cemented

1

u/UAtraveler1k 4h ago

Ughhhh. It’s been more than a year. 😭😭😭

u/Groundbreaking-Fig38 7h ago edited 6h ago

LA? Department of Water and power guy was arrested.

https://abc7.com/post/ladwp-employee-among-4-suspects-accused-causing-200000-graffiti-damage/19941779/

Edit: I THINK this is the same thing.

Edit2: I thought wrong. Chicago.

11

u/surnik22 7h ago

This is a new casino in Chicago

8

u/NuklearFerret 7h ago

"posted on social media." People should stop snitching on themselves.

4

u/doitup69 7h ago

Believe it or not, that’s a totally different building

1

u/Different-Bet8069 7h ago

The tags are crazy similar though.

25

u/Daratirek 7h ago

Lmfao more work to arrest these guys for "damaging" something that will be covered up than most of the real crimes in their city. Idiots

8

u/NealCaffreyx9 7h ago

I don’t think these things are mutually exclusive. The PD can chase violent crime while also cracking down on “property” crimes. We can’t shit on cities for looking ugly and then also shit on cops when they try to do something about it.

4

u/Daratirek 6h ago

The point is that this will be covered up. You won't see it after the glass fascia is on there. Plus a simple coat of grey paint covers it. Calling it $200k in damages is just inflating numbers so it sounds like the PD actually fucking did something of use. Wasting their time on this shit isn't helping anyone.

3

u/therealhlmencken 5h ago

The article isn’t about this

1

u/surnik22 4h ago

Well not in Chicago.

We’ve got more cops per capita and lower closure rates on crimes than other major cities.

I’d rather they spend their time on literally any other crime than one that causes 0 harm to anyone. It doesn’t even harm the building owners because it will be covered up

-2

u/therealhlmencken 5h ago

Yeah you can lol. You don’t think someone can keep their space beautiful and dislike cops lmao is that the only think bringing beauty to places in your mind?

1

u/NealCaffreyx9 4h ago

Huh? What is this comment

1

u/External_Gas5606 7h ago

Nah casino in Chicago

1

u/kidicarusx 7h ago

Chicago heading towards ohare I believe. I saw it heading out of the city

3

u/Kundrew1 7h ago

Its on the river on Chicago and Halsted. It used to be the Chicago Tribune building and now itll be a Ballys Casino

2

u/zydeco100 7h ago

Is downtown on the site of the old Tribune printing plant.

5

u/Kaludar_ 5h ago

Can someone fluent in graffiti font tell me what the middle one and the right one says? I can sorta make out the right one but the middle is totally incomprehensible.

u/dtoddh 7h ago edited 7h ago

Imagine rappelling in the dark with a bunch of spray cans, a headlamp and the skill to keep your large scale art lined up. On a very limited time frame.

Temporary art for cred.

I bet it felt awesome.

2

u/SE7ENG27 1h ago

...y súmale el factor adrenalina mientras se está colgado de cables frente con frente a la pared y un precipicio reclamando gravedad múltiple bajo los pies....

-29

u/Wow-WhatARide 7h ago

'Art'?

No.

-1

u/Throsty 2h ago

Yes.

2

u/SAUbjj 7h ago

Chicago! It's been there a few months now. Somebody posted about it in r/chicago

2

u/Conscious-Sea-5287 4h ago

We all know how they did this, and it’s a helllll noooooo for me dawg

1

u/nimeton0 7h ago

Now that’s dedication.

1

u/Solve_My_Enigma 7h ago

Reminds me of that one battlefield 4 dlc map, had this building basically in the center, sorta beach vibes.

2

u/Galactic_Barbacoa 4h ago

Hey I saw that the other day! Right on the river off the Ohio exit into the loop

1

u/Beetbandit3 1h ago

Is this in Chicago?

1

u/government_ 32m ago

Sopo climbs shit in Chicago.

1

u/ChineseNoodleDog 7h ago

Anyone know how it could've gotten there?

17

u/Gym_leader_blue 7h ago

Rappelling from the top

3

u/willzyx01 7h ago

Either going through the gate and using the stairs, or a blackhawk helicopter

2

u/RioReiser85 7h ago

Getting up there is probablly pretty easy

And then you use some ropes for abseiling. I feel like thats nowadays pretty common among more ambitious graffiti crews.

Its cool but not that crazy. Perfect fit for mildlyinteresting.

1

u/Br135han 7h ago

Spider-man

1

u/Kanoa 5h ago

Swing stage. They have them set up on the roof.

1

u/questbound 7h ago

The builders

Y’all non-Chicagoans, (channeling K2-SO): “It’s high. It’s very high”

1

u/Lucky-Advice-8924 7h ago

Im more impressed with the stealth to be honest, with so many nosey people, it only takes one to call the cops. Not many people look up, but from a distance youre probably gonna notice someone hanging from a rope at 3am in the morning. Especially in the city where shits illuminated all the time... though ive never seen it, not once, and i was homeless on off for like 5 years, id consider myself way more observent and i was very mobile, up at all hours, So i wouldve expected to see atleast one of these guys, not once.

1

u/ThoopidSqwrl 3h ago

To be a party pooper, these walls are usually prefabs. So likely the concert panels were made, stored, someone graffiti'd them, and then they were used.

1

u/DPAWL87 1h ago

Not at all. I was doing the plumbing for the hotel of this Ballys Casino project in Chicago. Ballys stopped the hotel build out (are going to finish outside windows and superstructure still). This was done after we pulled out. It’s supposedly a famous street artist.

Either way, the decks (floors) and core were all poured in place. Someone had to be in on it though because security was tight when we were there. Two gates with ID badges required to open. Along with two security booths to get in the job from Grand Ave heading north to the job site.

1

u/Legal_Response6614 7h ago

How to they get to these places? 🤔

1

u/coolninga22 7h ago

Sopo got some footage on youtube, some pretty good pieces

0

u/Sluntlordd 7h ago

I want to know why part of the building seems to be reflective glass windows, and then right dab in the middle one side of balcony’s in each between what looks like unfinished work 😭

4

u/CNof2013 7h ago

Pretty sure those are other unfinished parts and the railing is from the construction crew not balconies. If you look at the bottom of the building it looks the same way and is clearly still being worked on

0

u/Sluntlordd 7h ago

Yeah the bottom for sure but the top ones legit look like balconies 😭 I just have so many questions 🤣

1

u/DPAWL87 57m ago

It’s unfinished. Ballys halted hotel construction but are proceeding with windows and superstructure. There is a balcony up on the 34th floor for the VIP area.

0

u/scotte416 6h ago

Reddit not allowing me to click pictures anymore so I can make it bigger is annoying....

0

u/Ok_Molasses4053 6h ago

I saw this in manhattan

-6

u/erbr 7h ago

Would be nice to see all that effort be put into something decent for the society.

1

u/photocist 5h ago

True. They could have been building a casino

-4

u/Worth-Canary-9189 7h ago

This has to be LA. Where gangsters own their own set of repelling gear.

-3

u/DeaddyRuxpin 6h ago

Puts NJ’s Kid PK to shame.

2

u/zibabadoo 6h ago

PK Kid was doin this 20 years before anyone else thought of it. an OG of OGs

1

u/DeaddyRuxpin 6h ago

I was talking about the height. Although Kid PK did tag the entire side of a water tower.

-4

u/Cloud_N0ne 6h ago

Some degenerate risked life and limb just to vandalize something with their shitty “art”.

3

u/Man_to_Men 6h ago

Naww it's pretty good
