I have 2 copies of Rush Hour 3 with different covers

They were both the star, this is agreeable but it is funny to think that this was a concession because they just couldn't agree on who's name should go first.

u/hungrylens 11h ago
You think it's in their contracts that the printing has to be a 50/50 split?
71
u/GuyPronouncedGee 11h ago
For many stars, yes. The contract states that their name must be a certain size relative to other cast and also relative to the title of the movie.

u/hungrylens 10h ago
I mean if they make say 100,000 copies of the DVD, 50,000 have Chan first and 50,000 have Tucker first, and get shipped at random to store shelves at the same time.

u/GuyPronouncedGee 10h ago
Maybe not 50/50, but something about it is certainly in the stars’ contracts. It could be for certain markets or other reasons.

I wonder if the DVDs are for different regions and which ones. I bet the Jackie Chan first covers were for outside the US where Tucker wasn't as well known but Chan is hugely popular.
eta: I wonder if there were also different covers for Shanghai Noon that flipped Own Wilson and Jackie Chan.

They did the same for Rush Hour 2

Wow my comment is the third down I didn't even remember making it in that thread.

u/CptAngelo 9h ago
lol, ive had the same experience, but i was looking for a solution to a problem i faced probably once or twice with some software and i found some obscure thread in a mostly abandoned website with the answer. It was a comment made by me, i found the solution back then and came back to post it "to whoever may need it in the future", i never thanked my past self so much lol

u/Northern23 8h ago
That's why you should alway provide the answer if you encounter a problem and solve it yourself.
Happened to me once as well but I knew where I posted the Q/A, tried to give a thumbs up to myself but couldn't :)

The mirrored version makes me feel uneasy. Which maybe means the non-mirrored me does not make me feel uneasy, I just didn’t realise?
4
u/DudeMan18 10h ago
But which one is the mirrored one?
3
u/GRAABTHAR 9h ago
The one on the left is mirrored. Men's jackets have the button on the right side and buttonhole on the left.

Also mildly interesting... Everything is identical except for the photo of Chan. Tucker is the same shot just mirrored, while that is a different shot entirely of Chan. He looks happier when he get's first billing 😄

Left one Chan is in front, right one Tucker is in front.
Also the text of their names is swapped; oftentimes names/actors on movie posters don't line up at all.

The question isn't why they changes the billing and cover, the question is why on earth do you have 2 copies of Rush Hour 3?

u/Special-Kitchen3222 8h ago
I don't really know, I was organizing my dvds and my wife's dvds in the office and noticed I had two copies. I know I got a copy when moving and inherited some movies from a roommate, I think she bought a copy from the Walmart bargain bin.

The movie is pretty forgettable.

Its more whimsical than the previous 2 but the buddy cop pair is still excellent. I wish it got a vinyl soundtrack release like the other two.

it's memorable....in the way that I remember it for having Roman Polanski force his fingers into a person's anus and it's played as a joke.
but other than that, I'm 90% sure this is the movie where Jackie Chan teams up wit Owen Wilson and the misunderstandings of each others culture lead to wacky hijinks and hilarity ensues.

Is this AB testing?

u/kytheon 10h ago
OP ruined the test by getting both

"You're not part of the control group, by the way. You get the gel. Last poor son of a gun got blue paint. Hahaha. All joking aside, that did happen - broke every bone in his legs. Tragic. But informative. Or so I'm told."
"The lab boys just informed me that I should not have mentioned the control group. They're telling me I oughtta stop making these pre-recorded messages. That gave me an idea: make more pre-recorded messages. I pay the bills here, I can talk about the control group all damn day."

u/Kyserham 10h ago
It’s curious because the left one tells me that both are the protagonists, but the right one says that Tucker is the protagonist and Chan is the sidekick

u/rex5k 9h ago
How you getting that impression?
7
u/AskMeAboutMyHermoids 9h ago
Jackie is on top on the left one while Chris takes up more space so they seem somewhat equal there.
On the right one, Jackie is behind and smaller while Chris seems to be more focused on the top and front

American vs Asian market covers

u/anirban_dev 3h ago
Isn't Jackie Chan a bigger name in America than Chris Tucker?
1
u/phatelectribe 3h ago
Not at the time, no. He’s dropped off considerably since.

u/Erotic_Hitch_Hiker 35m ago
Maybe not for rush hour 1. But this is rush hour 3. Which was made at arguably jackie chan's peak popularity

Look at the words, they have different top billing. Maybe it’s to show they both share it.

There’s a movie from the 80s with Shelley Long and Bette Midler that did something similar.
They split the country. So when it was sent to video stores, East of Mississippi had Midler as top and West had Long.
They even did it during the theatrical release. 2 trailers, posters, other random things switching names.

I appreciate that they flipped the names too. I hate a move cover/poser where people are in a line and the name aren't also in that order.

I was in Bumfuck, Oregon the other day and noticed Chris Tucker is performing at a janky casino out there.

Similar to the presentation of "Funny Bones" but for different reasons.
The cast order on posters & home release media for Funny Bones:-
In US
Oliver Platt
Jerry Lewis
Lee Evans
Leslie Caron
Richard Griffiths
In UK
Oliver Platt
Lee Evans
Richard Griffiths
Oliver Reed
Leslie Caron
Jerry Lewis

What I like most is the names are on the actual actors. That almost never happens.

Interesting that it looks like Chris’s pic is the same but flipped but Jackie’s 2 pics are two different pics. They should have just used two different pics for both of them, or just flipped both using same pic for each

Damn they put more effort into the DVDs than they did the actual movie.
One of the worst movies I've ever with one of the weirdly abrupt endings in any movie I've ever seen.

u/C-sanova 10h ago
Just rewatched this movie the other day and I feel like my initial reaction to it was wrong. It's not that bad, it's still funny but it definitely tries to lean more into the serious aspects of the first film.
Roman Polanski fingering butts in a Brett Ratner film does leave an odd taste in my mouth though.

I love that Chris Tucker is just mirror-flipped, but it's an entirely different photo of Jackie Chan.
