Infuriatig Got harassed by grocery store security for eating chicken in my car
This is probably gonna sound dumb but it still annoyed the crap out of me. So I’m at the grocery store doing some quick shopping. I’m super hangry because it’s nearly 3 PM, I haven’t eaten all day, and I just left the gym. Poor life choices on my part, but I digress. I end up grabbing a rotisserie chicken some greens, and fruit before heading out. As soon as I get to my car, I clean my hands start going to town lol. No shame in my game I was literally starving. Mind you, I also parked hella far from the building because I knew I’d need a few minutes to eat before driving home.
Well two minutes into my late lunch, I get a harsh knock on my window from store security telling me to move along. Ummm, excuse me? I’m sorry, but what the actual fuck? Maybe I’m being overly dramatic here but it irrationally pissed me off. Partially because I’m knuckles deep in a rotisserie chicken, but also because they knocked on my window way too hard, I just spent over 100$ in your damn store and it’s not like I was even taking up a prime spot since I parked in the back. It sounds ridiculous but I genuinely think I’m changing grocery stores because wtf?

A security guard walked into the hotel kitchen one time while I was working. Walked up to me all weird and asked if I work there. No bro, I'm just wearing these kitchen clothes for the hell of it. Strange behaviour.

And I would walk into the store and demand to talk to the manager. They either resolve it to my liking or they won't see me again.

Walk into the store, demand manager.
Shake hands with manager.
Do not wash your hands before that. You're in a hurry because security is in a hurry.38

Once again, it's not the store messing your meal up, its lot security, generally through the realty company.
One time I had to call them to say "Hey, your building is on fire".
The whole fire department showed up, all of them, it was an avengers level fire.
Security guards honestly scare me sometimes. They're armed and they just have to pass a two hour course.

I was driving Uber late one night when I got a video call from my family that my Mom who lived in another state was in the hospital about to die from pneumonia that had suddenly gone septic. Last I heard she was just home battling a bad cold. I didn't have a fare at the time so I pulled over into the nearest parking lot -a closed grocery store. A few minutes later the night security guard knocked on my window and motioned for me to roll it down. I just shook my head "no" and backed my car out of the parking spot to drive around the corner to a less patrolled lot where I wouldn't be hassled while basically saying goodbye to my unconscious Mom and crying on a video call with my family 💔

u/girlwhoweighted 2h ago

It's been a few years, so the pain has mostly scarred over I guess. But op's story pulling up this memory for me so vividly might be an indication of some grief I still haven't dealt with. 😮💨

u/ambid3xtrous 6h ago
Don't change store. Those idiots are subcontractors. Call the store and tell the manager what these idiots did. They'll want to know and I suspect they'll apologize to you. That's just weird behavior.

Some people just don't understand the primal satisfaction you get from raw dogging a grocery store rotisserie chicken with your bare hands. Those people are WEAK

If the security was 3rd party.. a company hired by the shopping center, I’d ask what company they work for and if they wanna get fired. Tell them to write it in their log book and F off.
If they were a store employee I’d show a receipt and tell them to go away or bring the store manager.

Just show them the receipt or point to the bags of groceries and tell them you're a customer. Say you're lightheaded because your a diabetic and need to eat something right now or you'll pass out.
Then ask them, "do you want me to pass out? Crash my car because I'm lightheaded? What? Do I need to ask the manager if I eat a bit before I go?" They'll practically run from your car.

Its true, we get people pushing out cart fulls of groceries without paying!! Some grocery stores have security but a lot are putting in barriers go people cant get their carts out until they pass through a check out lane. It started getting bad like that when they made stealing anything under $900 as a nothing thing!! Looters looting during store hours. It’s ridiculous. We are sick of it here in CA and need to crack down on these clowns
7
u/dangerousfeather 4h ago
Here (Pennsylvania) a local grocery chain installed locking wheels on the shopping carts. If you didn’t take the cart through the checkout, it triggers a sensor at the door that locks a wheel on your cart.
It is absolutely infuriating to go through the self-checkout, apparently not hit a sensor, and find yourself pushing an un-rollable cart full of groceries when you hit the doors.

At the supermarket I worked at we had a guy who was wired a little like Gus Fring. He'd block the cart before they cleared the metal detector, they'd say he couldn't detain them, and he would agree.
"I am not holding you here Ma'am, I'm simply holding onto your cart while you go get your wallet".
They'd usually swear at him and leave.
Corporate eventually told him to stop doing that, but I thought it was badass.
87
u/Complete_Entry 6h ago edited 6h ago
Why didn't you tell him no and roll your window up?
I worked supermarket deli, and people absolutely stuff the food in their face the second the receipt prints. I never took it poorly. Better than the thieves who shove the leftovers into the store shelves.
We literally decommissioned the chicken station because that happened too much, kept them behind the counter, and customers had to pay before we handed them over. People were MAD.
Also, people only want the tub. Management likes the bags because they're heat shrunk shut, less "Grazing" which is the polite word for "stealing".
One thing I will say is scope the door, usually full-service deli stores will have one or two tables out the door, specifically so you can sit and eat, you shouldn't have to eat in the car.
In my state, CA, you already paid a tax on it being hot and ready to eat, so like fuck is some fake tin star wearing motherfucker justified in that window knock.
Enjoy your chicken, friend. It's an absolute nightmare to make. I still can't eat it, and it's been... shit, almost 20 years.

u/New-Trifle-7097 4h ago
Based on the amount of people I know and see who dive into a rotisserie chicken bare handed in their car straight out of the store, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say I think that’s the proper way to eat them.
Thank you for your rotisserie service. Steering wheels all over are greasy and our road rage is tamed with a full belly. God’s work.

u/Little_Red_Riding_ 4h ago
I used to work at a tavern up north that sold rotisserie chickens on Sunday. It took me years to get over that smell of chicken + rosemary + garlic salt while sweating to death in a tiny 110 degree kitchen. We made so much of it that it just ruined it for me. We had so much leftover, we had to find other ways to sell it. The owner was just so stupid. He had more money than common sense.

Sometimes you gotta eat and tbh if there's a costco nearby their rotisserie chicken is like the best food deal around.

16
u/anothersip 1h ago
That's bonkers. Yeah, that dude was on some power trip. Which isn't honestly uncommon for security guards (they tend to let their uniform and their responsibility for keeping a place safe get to their heads. not all of them, but a lot of them).
Dude had zero business asking you to move. I'm assuming there was plenty of other parking available in the lot, so that's just completely unnecessary, IMO, and you weren't hurting anyone. In fact, him shooing you along actually puts both you and others on the road in danger, assuming you were starving enough to have to get some food in you in the parking lot... Gotta' have that brain fuel, man.

This would piss me off too. I eat lunch in parking lots at least 3x per week.
Reminds me of when I was in college. Went to my car to nap because I had a 2 hour break between classes. Had campus police knock on my window once to ask if I was okay, then acted surprised when I said I was napping before my next class.
•
u/Mykirbyblue 49m ago
I used to be a DoorDash driver. And there would always be a lull mid afternoon between lunch and dinner. So sometimes I would grab something to eat in my car. But other times I would just lean back and shut my eyes and listen to a podcast or something while I waited to hear that familiar alert sound from DoorDash that I was getting an offer. It could easily be 15 to 20 minutes or more between offers in my small town at that time of day during the week. So it was not unusual for me to doze off.
I got those knocks on the window all the freaking time! And it always pissed me off SOOOO much! It was never security or anything like that. it was always just random people, and for some reason they saw me asleep in my car and felt like they needed to check on me? I do not understand that. I would never go disturb someone minding their own business in their own vehicle.

u/Electrical-Apple-631 4h ago
I have been in the same situation with rotisserie chicken. I bought one for dinner one day but as soon as I got in the car the aroma called out to me. I prayed “Get thee behind me Satan” and he pushed me right to the grocery bag. I tore into that chicken like a Neanderthal who just discovered cooked meat.
About ten minutes later a security guard tapped on my window and asked if I was having car trouble. I said no, but if he could open my hatchback and grab the package of napkins I’d appreciate it. He laughed, gave me my napkins, and said he was going to go get some chicken.
11
u/TheHarlemHellfighter 4h ago
That would get under my skin too.
Seems like you took enough precautions before all it happened yet the security guard probably watched you the entire time and decided to just be an asshat.

I’ve taken naps in the parking lots of several local grocery stores in my area. A couple months back I rolled up at Whole Foods and didn’t feel like walking in the rain, took a nap no issues for an hour then went inside to shop. Same for a road trip in my state easier this year. Pulled into a grocery store, took a quick nap, went inside to get a snack and went on my way.
I’ve seen people eating during lunch time, working on laptops etc.

Our local family-owned grocery store has a huge deli with a lot of grandmother type ladies doing all the cooking, they have some great home cooked food, but my favorite is they sell a pint cup of General Tso chicken for under $5. I have sat in that parking lot many times and devoured an entire cup with a soda from the vending machine out front. The best cheap lunch on the planet! I would tell Barney Fiffe to get a life.

For what it's worth, about a week ago, there's a little commercial.. enclave? anchored by a Wal-mart, with a bunch of those little retail stores around the periphery. I pulled into a spot in the main parking area, nearest the Jack in the Box, but not actually in the JITB lot (it's tiny and a pain in the ass).
My goal? Mobile order and then go through the drive thru, because I'm a lazy sack of shit. Like OP, maybe 3 minutes into phone-scrolling, car still on, just sitting in a mostly-empty lot some security dweeb comes up and is like, "They don't want people in sitting around in their cars here."
Admittedly, the area is near a freeway, and they have a significant.. transient population issue, but for fuck's sake,

You don't have to have entirely grown up in this country to live in this country.
For me it was because you say one hundred ollars. Not dollars on hundred. It took a while to get used to, and I spoke pretty fluent English for longer than I've lived here, I just didn't see dollar amounts be written down consistently enough to jot it into memory until waaaaaay later.
13
u/Outside-Pear9429 2h ago

In chats and texts when I need to be quick or I’m not super concerned about being proper I type my thoughts and I always say the amount $.
That’s how I think it, say it, and type it often.

They aren't taught it, they just do it themselves.
A lot of the younger generation puts $ after the number, its just how texting has evolved. I have many clients who will come in who are young, write $ after the number and their parents will tell them thats wrong.

It matches how people talk (“thirty dollars”, not “dollars thirty”), and texting tends to follow conversational English more than written English.
It looks ugly in writing and is indeed wrong, but clearly the meaning is not lost so it still works for casual use. I’ve certainly done it at times when I’m in a hurry and not proofreading my stream of thought.

That’s how I type it. Because it’s how I say it. The word dollars comes after the number 🤷🏼♂️

I remember my English teacher in highschool complaining about how some people were putting 5$ instead of $5. It's because some people when they read it, write it the same way.
Everyone's brain works a little differently

Literacy rates are shocking poor in America. I see people say "loose" when they mean "lose" so often that I have subconsciously swapped them when reading and confused myself in the cases where someone used the right word. You are correct about the education, but people are often ignorant.

"Are" for "our" is shit too.
Also, the infamous "of" for "have."

For all intensive purposes I could care less and it just adds street catch it.
But less unseriously, I've actually seen "paddle stool" in the wild.
(pedestal, as in, putting someone on a pedestal)

I think that’s different than putting the $ sign after the number tho. I wouldn’t say it makes me illiterate. Especially for a Reddit post
Also idk why it’s shocking to you. The U.S.’ education system is pretty shit and it’s only getting worse

True about most things but not about where the dollar sign goes.

I do it all the time out of sheer laziness, when typing. I do it with the £ sign too. Really it’s a weird thing to be annoyed by.

“So I guess I’m going to dedicate an extra hour every time I go to the store to park in the front and eat a rotisserie chicken out of spite” is how this post should have ended.

It sounds like a security gaurd, who thinks he is more important than he really is. I would have driven my car closer to the store and filed a complaint with the manager.
Some of those security guys got head so far up where sun dont shine it ridiculous. I saw a YouTube video of a security gaurd shooting a man in his car after months of interactions with man. The guy was there to haul off pallets for one of the tenants.

Not wrong to be angry/upset, but don't inconvenience yourself by switching grocery stores if you like this one. It was just one asshole employee, they don't represent the entire brand. If you like the food and prices and location just keep going.

The security guard at my local grocery causes waaaay more shit than he solves. I think we shop at the same place.

I'm with you. I've been eating in my car for years, and no over had ever harassed me for it. Super weird. You should tell the store though, maybe that security guard needs fired

I eat in parking lots all the time cuz I don't wanna eat cold food when I get home.
That's fucking dumb.

I always do that when I'm hungry. I'll make a sandwich in my car from the stuff I just bought. If security or any worker said something I'd be having words with management

Should have jammed more chicken into your mouth and turn to him with a feral look on your face.

I work in a cargo van. Eating in parking lots when I have few spare minutes is a regular thing for me. Ever had that happen, fortunately. That security guy really needs a life.

I would’ve told him it’ll be another 10 minutes until my friend comes out as she’s doing her own shopping

There's a video of a guy eating chipotle in the parking lot and the store called the cops on him and they couldn't understand why he was still parked in front of the chipotle... While he was eating the chipotle...
