I just wanted a hot dog Employee says she “likes assigning faces to people who order a lot of food”
Is this normal guys? I recently drove to McDonald’s to pick up 2 double bacon quarter pounders with cheese and some cookies right. I pull up to the next window and the old lady looked at me UPSET.
It was awkward for a few moments looking at her waiting to i don’t know.. pay? and, she said something along the lines of “did you order all that food to yourself?” I was very confused at first. So I had her repeat the question, and she elaborated by saying “like are you going to eat all that food alone?”
I was pretty shocked and told her no, that the other burger is for a friend. She said “oh okay, I just like assigning faces to people who order a lot of food like that” WTH😭 yall I cannot make this up. I was shocked, is this normal for you guys or should I do something? Never experienced that at McDonald’s before. I still have my receipt

u/teablooom 6h ago
even if you were going to eat all of that by yourself it doesn't mean all in one sitting?! wtf lmao 😭 I used to work at McD's for a couple years and saw people order ungodly amounts of food that clearly was for themselves and guess what we literally don't care. Sometimes we might think "damn" and move on w our day. And that was as teens who judge everything lol so no I would not say this is normal

u/ash-leg2 4h ago
I have a colleague who is a former body builder and she said after shows (and weeks of perfectly clean eating) she'd go to McDs and order 2 Supersized Big Mac meals with Cokes for herself.
22
u/Needed_Warning 3h ago
Yeah, bodybuilders can put themselves into dangerous condition to be ready for shows. Eating clean for a few weeks is the mild, safe end of show prep. Dehydration, overconsumption of weird supplements, and actual starvation(way easier to achieve when your muscles burn twice the calories of a normal person's and you barely let yourself store any extra calories as fat) are the more extreme examples of show prep. Reading about the shit they'd do to themselves always made me grateful that I was powerlifting, not bodybuilding. I guess it's not like you don't do plenty of unsafe crazy shit as a powerlifter, but you're allowed to have things like body fat and normal hydration levels.
8
u/yourgrandmasgrandma 3h ago
Supersize went away more than 22 years ago.
17
u/ash-leg2 2h ago
Believe it or not there are still millions of people alive who ate McDonald's 22+ years ago.

u/No_Pumpkin_5187 3h ago
That is true. Either this is an extremely old anecdote or the word “large” didn’t have enough pizazz for them to just write that.
21
u/ash-leg2 3h ago
Extremely old? She was bodybuilding in her 20s, she's in her 50s now.
I am 34 and we watched the documentary Supersize Me in my 7th grade class when it was pretty new.

u/No_Dare_9944 2h ago
I’ve recently read a whole debate in a moms group about how this film is food shaming and outdated and needs to not be shown anymore. Promotes anorexia and the like, they said. I don’t know, I think it just states the obvious, if you consume 5000 calories per day via fast food you’re screwed
12
u/No_Pumpkin_5187 2h ago edited 1h ago
Well the basis of the film has already been debunked or whatever you wanna call it, due to the fact that the subject was secretly consuming copious amounts of liquor the entire time. Yeah fast food is unhealthy, but the data they collected is tainted by that at-the-time unknown factor.
•
u/desmodus666 43m ago
We watched it with the knowledge that the dude was an alcoholic when I was in school. We were basically being taught to research properly and check our sources, and this documentary is a shining example of deception.
-2
u/No_Dare_9944 2h ago
Yes this is true. However fast food isn’t healthy. My issue is with the fact that whoever says it they are accused of food policing or some such.
33
u/No_Dare_9944 6h ago

I've had cashiers get really weird about potato chips and soda, two items that don't go bad quickly.
"Having a party, eh?!"
Like, fuck off? Why would I tell you you fucking weirdo?
Every time I'm like, 'No, I just don't shop much so we're stocking up' but seriously, why is it coming up?
I love self-checkout for this reason alone. Every negative store experience is some employee being weird.
2
u/No_Dare_9944 2h ago
They are just making conversation I think. However it’s not a good idea to stock up on unhealthy foods. The whole point is to buy a tiny pack or bottle to satisfy the craving and then forget about it for as long as possible.
•
u/Soggy_Dimension_5771 9m ago
When I worked fast food my only thought when someone ordered a shit ton was like "they just spent $100 on roast beef sandwiches that food could have been groceries for days lol"
137
u/jmills74 6h ago
I was at a Subway years ago and this teen girl was making a sandwich for the customer in front of me. When it came to put toppings on the customer told her what they wanted and this girl said that it was gross. I was like... you are not eating it so shut your pie hole.

Lmao this reminded me of the time I was getting a bagel and cream cheese at an airport cafe in Atlanta and the lady asked what flavour of cream cheese and made this godawful disgusted face when I asked for plain that I had to laugh and be like what? And she straight up went “I don’t know how you can eat any cream cheese that isn’t strawberry. That’s disgusting” I just had to laugh because wtf lmao 😂

She likes mean mugging customers who order a lot of food? I'm sure her manager would love to hear about that
135
u/Public_Tradition_604 6h ago
That’s exactly what I was thinking. Not that it’s okay to ever do that, but it wasn’t even like tongue in cheek. Just looking VERY judgmental

Normalize telling people, "what a rude thing to say," or, "that should have been an inside thought." Being the bigger person is one thing, but I believe light social correction should make a comeback.
49
u/Ok-Income-9580 4h ago
No fr I work at a bakery and was having an awful day. I had a lady come in and as I was ringing her up she asked me how many cakes I eat in a day. Me being a heavy set girl with no fucks left to give asked her come again? The way this lady repeated herself with no hesitation. I asked her if she was asking because im fat lol. Never saw a customer leave so fast in their life 😂
23
u/SophiaofPrussia 3h ago
This genuinely made me laugh out loud. Good for you! That happiness vampire thought she was going to get a nice little ego boost at your expense and you just held up a mirror so she could see what a hollow shell of rotten person she was.

I like the metaphor but I feel compelled to point out that vampires have no reflection, so holding up a mirror wouldn’t show them anything.

I’m not usually a ‘make a complaint’ person, but food shamers deserve to be reported. You never know who you’re talking to, just sell them the food and stfu
33
41
u/Nimue_- 6h ago
What does that even mean? Assigning faces?
34
u/slimribbons 6h ago
It’s like when someone does something so ridiculous in traffic, if you pass them you gotta look and see who’s driving, yknow?
9
u/Ilfubario 4h ago
I think it means she’s used to the customers that order double portions to have a double chin
1
u/SanityPlanet 2h ago
I think she was trying to say, she was wondering if there was a second person eating the food, because seeing the second meal made her curious about who they were and likes to imagine what they look like.
1
u/Myusername1- 6h ago
It means she wants to remember repeat customers that order a lot of food. Why? I don’t know. Usually you remember repeat customers anyway. Maybe she’s trying to entertain herself guessing who the customer is,
Maybe she’s just a crazy old lady doing crazy things to entertain herself as she works a drive through window.
34
u/TheDarbiter 6h ago
Maybe she was upset because the face she assigned to you did not match? Either way, she’s unhinged for actually saying any of that out loud.
13
u/GimmieDatCooch 3h ago
People are SO weird. Why would anyone find it appropriate to comment on someones order?! Scared to know what the convo would have sounded like had OP said, “Yes this is all for me!”
Random as hell but this kind of reminds me of a Van Lathan interview he did where he talks how a worker shamed him prior his weight loss journey while he was ordering one of his “power meals” at chick fil a. His order was a 12 count nugget, 4 piece strip, large fry, small fry, cookie and diet coke. The worker was like “That big ass meal and you’re ordering a diet coke…..why don’t you order a milkshake or something…” and he got embarrassed and said “Just give me the regular one then..”
22
u/weewookindawitchy 5h ago

u/Forward-Amount-9961 4h ago
How would one go about assigning a face to someone? I don't understand what she meant. Like, does she want to keep a memory of your face in her mind? Does she want to assign you with a new face? And what does one do after assigning a bunch of faces to people?
3
u/Known-Plane7349 3h ago
I think I understand what she was trying to say. I used to work at McDonald's and I assigned a face to certain orders if the person came in regularly. For example, there was a guy who came in everyday and got a double QPC with big Mac sauce instead of ketchup and mustard. Didn't know his name, but whenever he came in I'd immediately put his order in the register so the kitchen would get started on it.
7
u/new-machine 4h ago edited 4h ago
That crosses a line. I make an effort to be polite to service workers but once I’d overcome my shock I’d want to say something like “You never know why someone’s ordering what they’re ordering. Mind your own business;” “Are you really that bored?”; “You have nothing better to do?”; And then report her behavior to upper management.
Edit: “I have my metabolism, you have yours” is one of my favorite comebacks to people who like to shame food intake (or perceived food intake). Like… I’m sorry you hate your own life/body and feel the need to take it out on a total stranger - get better soon 🤷♀️
9
u/itsjakerobb 2h ago
What is “assigning faces”?
I feel like it might mean that the worker likes to remember the faces of their biggest customers, which is totally reasonable — but I don’t see how doing that would be affected by whether OP planned to eat it all alone or with others.

51
u/Public_Tradition_604 6h ago
The other burger was for me. I’m not going to explain to some random employee that the only thing I had was an energy drink this morning. That’d be weird af to try and ‘justify myself’ to some random employee
19
u/UsedStruggle2521 6h ago
Im a skinny guy and i eat a double quarter pounder and a mc double on the side, with a med fries. Its not alot of food
5
u/Prior-Impress-2624 6h ago
My go to unfortunately is 3 large fries and a qpc then an ungodly amount of bbq. 125lbs with an overactive metabolism and an under active appetite(most of the time.) I maybe get it 1-2 times a week just so I can keep up.
3
u/No_Dare_9944 5h ago
I don’t think it’s a great idea to get your calories from fries even for your GI system’s sake
9
u/Prior-Impress-2624 5h ago
No, it’s not. I know. I’m working with my therapist because time constraints trigger my anxiety. So it’s a lot easier to not eat when I’m about to go somewhere or during work breaks. My quick fix to dropping weight is McDonald’s, but I’m working out a schedule with healthier meals.
-3
u/No_Dare_9944 5h ago
You’re doing yourself a disservice, skinny while young but you’re setting the habits that will get you in your 50s

1

u/No_Dare_9944 5h ago
The fact that you didn’t have anything to eat that day doesn’t mean you should gulp down two burgers for dinner. You’re doing yourself a disservice, man! Keep some reasonably harmless snacks at home and if you aren’t full after a burger then eat some cheese sticks and an apple or something. All those burgers are empty calories and not great for your GI system.
The lady was rude but maybe that can start a thinking process in you 😂15
6
u/Joelle9879 5h ago
There's no such thing as "empty calories." All food serves a purpose. Obviously, some food is better than others but all food gives a person energy and fills their tummy. None of what anyone eats is your business though so keep your judgmental opinions to yourself

3
u/Alizarin-Madder 4h ago
I'm genuinely curious, I see a lot of people say random things are made up, but you don't seem that pressed about it so I'll ask you. If you believe random stories are made up, what motivates you to read them and comment?
0
u/BrassKnuckleHead187 3h ago
You my friend just discovered the magic of Reddit. I don’t know if they made it up or not. It’s just a funny line of thought.
7
u/SRNAALT 3h ago edited 3h ago
Not gonna lie, I've experienced similar before lol.
Order at the speaker, pull up to the window and get comments along the lines of "Is this all for you??" or "Did you order for both lunch and dinner?", etc.
Disclaimer before any cheeky replies: Fast food is rare for me. My average daily fiber intake is over 60g, as part of a to-the-gram measured diet along with a significant amount of exercise. I've spent many, many years with the capacity to eat a lot of food both as fuel as well as an uncanny skill. As such, on the rare occasion of going to taco bell or whataburger or whatever it may be, I just treat it like what it is - a cheat meal - and go ham. 40 bucks, 50 bucks, 60 bucks... it's infrequent, but I'm gonna do it 'right' when I do it at all lol.
Honestly OP's order isn't even that big. Unless OP got like 20 cookies, I'm surprised that order even received a comment in the first place.
-2
u/No_Dare_9944 2h ago
No matter how infrequently you eat $50 worth of Taco Bell, I’m judging you, sorry! How can it even fit into one person 😂

u/FullofLovingSpite 3h ago
I doubt she works there long. As a former fat person, there's no fucking way I would go back to that location. That's chasing away your best customers to keep a shit person on staff. I don't think the owner will like it. Or corporate. I would definitely say something to corporate. More than just that questionnaire. She needs to be removed from a customer facing position asap.

Something similar happened to me. I recently moved to a really, really small town and every day before I would pick my kids up from school, I'd stop at the gas station and pick them out a snack/drink. About 2 weeks into this the cashier goes "since you buy a lot of candy and junk food, you should sign up for our rewards program"
And that was the last time I went to that gas station to buy candy and junk. Geez.
11
u/MCWizardYT 3h ago
He was doing his job. He might not have said it well but he does have to tell you about the rewards program. At least, that's been the case every retail place I've worked
17
u/Nanery662 5h ago
I mean he worded it poorly but it is just your in here a lot youll prob save some money with a rewards account
2
u/Alizarin-Madder 4h ago
I guess making your customers feel embarrassed for buying must be bad for business.
11
u/MCWizardYT 3h ago
If you get embarrassed that someone notices you're always buying heaps of junk food, maybe it's time to self evaluate
I've never been embarrassed buying anything. If it's too personal I can order online

1
u/Dapper-Ad-4300 1h ago
What’s embarrassing about objectively poiting out which products you buy so that you can get a discount?
If something about that makes you embarrassed maybe do some self reflection on why that is

13
u/Public_Tradition_604 6h ago
That sucks to hear. Don’t get why some people can’t just mind their own business
10
u/giasumaru 1h ago
Nah, that's totally different from what you got asked. This is just someone pitching their rewards program and showing that they recognize their frequent customers.
10
u/SigMartini 2h ago
You're GOING to their business. They're trying to save you money. If you're embarrassed by being recognized for buying junk food (which I do quite a bit, so no judgment here), then either embrace it or stop going.
14
u/IKillZombies4Cash 4h ago
You over reacted to the words of a person with a small vocabulary.
How would you ever expect a cashier who sees you every day to not remember you, and all you ever bought there , daily, was garbage food for your kids , so you should have joined the rewards program.
2
u/lmNotaWitchImUrWife 2h ago
Candy every day is junk food though? He was trying to save you a couple bucks.

That is a scary habit ngl. I warn my little sisters about becoming “gas station people.” It’s bad money management, bad nutrition. And you’re buying a junk food for your kids every day? Maybe they were trying to help you see the habit for what it is. Self-awareness isn’t a dirty word!

Every time a business starts recognizing me it makes me not want to go there anymore. I used to go to Noodles & Co every other Thursday after a meeting. Once every 14 days like clockwork I'd go and order the same meal. I decided to mix it up once and when they brought it to me table they told me if I didn't like it they'd bring me my usual order 😭
Very sweet that they'd replace it for free, but I felt humiliated that they recognized me. I thought I was going infrequently enough to fly under the radar, but apparently not 😂

Once you politely describe what the person said--- and their description---turn around and walk out.
Let the manager deal with this employee... urr...former employee.

Perspective: this is a person working at McDonalds as an adult, an older adult.
Just ignore any quirks and move on. They're there for a reason, and you just discovered it. You wouldn't get upset by a mentally unwell person saying something rude in passing, right? Same deal here.

Back when I worked at a fastfood chicken joint I saw this particularly large man enter the dining room, order an entire 25 piece tender family meal with a few family sized sides the watched as he proceeded to sit down and eat the entire thing himself. If I'm being honest, I wasn't disgusted or judging him, I was just impressed by it. He was nice and didn't leave a mess when he left, so pretty cool guy all around.

I worked at McDonald's for over a year, absolutely never. Of someone ordered a lot of food I would assume it's for multiple people, really I wouldn't care at all
Although one time me and my sister pulled into a McDonald's drive through (different one) and the girl taking our money asked for our names and said she "remembers all of my regulars" I'm not trying to be known as a McDonald's regular girl

She can amuse herself however she wants. The moment it becomes a problem is when she goes out and starts hassling the customer about who's eating the food

Autism isn't an excuse to be rude and I'm tired of people pretending it is.

And just because someone is rude doesn't immediately identify them as being on the spectrum. Some people are just assholes

Fast food places should have to follow the same rule as pubs. If a really fat person walks in, they should be required to say, "sorry, I'm not allowed to serve you, you've had too much already".

No you shouldn’t do anything. She was rude but she is right no one except maybe a hungry student athlete should order two full size burgers for oneself

two full size burgers
Wow! Two full size burgers?
As opposed to what...? Do you go to a lot of fast-food places that let you order half a burger?

I feel like I'm always seeing mini burgers advertised, like a Whopper Jr or something. I figured it was a sign of the economy.

There are small cheap burgers. But like even at five guys a regular burger should be the only one you eat unless you are an athlete

Who are you to make that assessment? Maybe getting some for somebody else. Maybe eating one of them later. Maybe eating both and washing it down with a 2-liter of soda. Point is, it has nothing to do with you and it's not your business. I say that as a skinny dude that eats fast food maybe twice a year.

Oh of course I don’t go around telling strangers that they are acting stupid. My point was, someone has to instill common sense in people. One doesn’t need to be a nutritionist to know these things.
I say this as a fat lady who defied common sense for too long.3

I'm sure everybody is aware that eating a bunch of burgers isn't good for you. Being a preachy busybody doesn't help anyone.

Okay, I don't know what your issue with food is that you feel the need to police internet strangers' diets, but you should go to therapy for it. Multiple comments lecturing people you don't know about precisely what they should eat is a sign of something significantly worse for you than the occasional high-calorie meal.

My issue is that common sense nutrition guidelines have somehow become food policing nowadays. I would never do what that lady did, but someone needs to tell OP and others like him that while an occasional burger is fine, two burgers is just too much. It’s common sense if you don’t want to be fat and have GI issues. Yes people can become fat even when eating healthy but that’s not relevant.
