I'm slightly vexed Inadvertently ordered an $8 bottle of water for myself at a restaurant
Went to an Italian restaurant to get a quick lunch/dinner pizza before checking out of my hotel and going to the airport.
Waitress walks up and asks "can I get you started with something". I reply "just water is fine". She wants to know "sparkling or still or tap". As soon as I hear the first two options I immediately start to answer "still" before processing that there is a third choice. As she walks I say I think to myself that maybe I should've gone with tap, but I figure it's okay, I can pay a few bucks for a small water bottle.
She comes back with a full freshly opened liter (1.06qt) water bottle and pours me a glass. I think to myself "surely not...".
Having drank exactly one glass of water by the time I'm done with my pizza, the check comes out and sure enough, Acqua 8.00.
I ask "you're charging me for the whole bottle?"
"Yes, that's the only size we serve, sorry. But it's okay because, see, you can put the cap back on and take it with you". It's not a plastic cap. It doesn't actually seal.
I'm sure that will work great in my luggage.
Note that every table in this restaurant has a small size bottle on it (probably .3 liters or there about) of this exact same brand, with a flower in it.
Anyway, am I the idiot for not realizing that I was going to get a full bottle? I would've hoped she might say something like "since you're just by yourself, are you sure you want to order a whole liter bottle of water?"
But nope.
Anyway, it's fine, just mildly infuriating to me.

Was the water at least good? Or indistinguishable from tap water? Because man I couldn't handle $8 for water

Im gonna be so FR with you. Aqua Panna is the greatest water of all time

u/foundinwonderland 7h ago
It’s so fucking good it makes me mad honestly. I have good water at home (reverse osmosis filtered) but fuck me Aqua Panna is so much better. It’s a treat for me that we usually only get on vacation 😂
Also I’m glad I’m not the only one with this opinion

I fully agree. When I cut back on drinking I’d go to the bar and order that. Truly the best water. 🩷

What is so wonderful about it? I can't imagine paying $8 for a liter of still water, but so many people are saying how amazing it is.

u/fuckedfinance 3h ago
Source is important.
Water isn't just water. Water also contains (usually) minerals and whatnot that were dissolved at the location where it was before bottling. Each area is going to have it's own distinct makeup. The well water where I am tastes great but may taste different two towns over because it comes from a different aquifer with different characteristics.
Same thing with beer and liquor. Einstok is brewed using glacial water. Good bourbon leans on the right balance of minerals in the source water.
Most of your average bottled water comes from public reservoirs and are absolutely nothing special.
So yeah, sometimes water is just water, but sometimes water is WATER.

u/MorticiaLaMourante BLACK 3h ago
Oh, I'm very aware of the importance of water source! Where i live, tap water isn't great. In fact, I have a specifc kind of filter on my house to get rid of the chloramine the city puts in the water. So it's the source of this water that makes it special. I'm going to have to read up on it!

I just checked... my Safeway is charging $2.49 for a 1L bottle of ACQUA PANNA (you illiterates, there's a literal photo...) Talk about quite the uncharted to $8.00 because that in and of itself is mildy infuriating to me...

Fiji water tastes like the filtered mud. I never understood why people like it.
5
u/NoMouseInHouse 3h ago
I don't understand this thread. I love Fiji because the mouthfeel of the water is distinctly different from plain water and I could clearly pick that out of a blind taste test. I tried Aqua Panna when accompanying someone shopping at Tiffany's in Vegas (so it already screamed bougie water lol), but it was somewhat unremarkable? I guess I'll give it another try, but Fiji always leaves an impression on me.

My one great perk at work is we serve aqua panna and as the manager i get free food aka a lot of aqua panna. And im charge of ordering it so I make sure we never run out.
10
u/CyanVince 5h ago
Reverse osmosis only removes impurities from your water, while spring water is valued for the impurities... You can add mineral blends to your RO water to make it taste similar to Acqua Panna; usually only coffee fanatics use it to "optimize" their water but it can certainly be consumed without the coffee too.
3
4
u/anon_simmer 4h ago
You should NOT be drinking RO water without adding minerals back.
→ More replies (1)5
u/GuiltyThing69 3h ago
There is absolutely no reason to avoid drinking exclusively RO water. You would literally have to try very, very hard to become nutrient deficient from drinking RO water. Your diet would essentially have to be so poor you are at either starvation levels, or you would have to have an eating disorder causing severe nutrient deficiencies. Exactly where did you get the information behind your claim?
63
u/madmaxjr 7h ago
This is facts. I regularly and gladly pay $5-10 for a bottle when a restaurant has it.
There’s a reason this is the go-to still water for a lot of Michelin Star-type places.
43
u/EzJuCa2 6h ago
Fun fact, many Olive Gardens carry it. When I was a line cook, we called it “manager water” because no customers ever bought it, so the managers would get it half off for themselves. I love that damn water.

When I was growing up I could see a Nestlé factory from my window and could walk to it in about 5 minutes, honesty thought I'd be working there when I left school but a combination of moving a few miles away and the factory closing down changed that.
If I remember it was something weird like caskets the company that took over the factory made (and I think now closed totally)
My neighbours son worked there when I was a small child so I always got Nestlé chocolate which as I was from a poor family I appreciated as otherwise I would have no treats.
But yeah, as an adult I know how evil they are.

I train my staff in very specific verbiage so this doesn’t happen. “Would you prefer a bottle of sparkling or still water, or tap?” And then if they ask for a bottle and they’re solo, we clarify that it’s a larger bottle (but ours do actually cap).
Upselling and duping guests are 2 separate things. Upselling is making sure the guests have all their options, so they can purchase what they want. Plenty of people will choose to purchase. It’s NOT using deceitful language or manipulation. If I’m making thoughtful recommendations I don’t even have to worry about sales, they come naturally.
4
u/THEBlaze55555 3h ago
As someone in a different kind of sales: this is the way.
If I really want to upsell, it can also be in the words. Never bash something because 1. It’s obvious and 2. Not everyone is gonna pay more no matter how much better it is, some people can’t. Budgets exist. You don’t want to make them unwilling to buy anything. Talk about the base option positively. Then talk about the upgrade even more positively. Focus on the differences. If they agree, they buy, if they don’t, they hopefully still buy the base option. Most of my job is just informing.
3
u/New-Trifle-7097 2h ago
I know nothing about sales (despite it being a job responsibility!) but your last sentence is the one thing I’ve learned. Some people know exactly what they want and nothing more, the minute they walk through the door. And that’s great! Let me ring you up. But more often than not people don’t realize they can have better, or more. You gotta let them know.
2
u/RealityDreamer96 2h ago

This happened when my parents and I went out to dinner with my friend in London. We, being Americans, didn’t realize that the water they kept bringing over (in one of those old time-y pop cork bottles) was an additional charge. We had been walking around all day and were very thirsty. I think we ended up getting 3-4 bottles and they were £8 each! My dad was very upset when we got the bill. The bottles weren’t even labeled so it honestly could’ve just been filtered tap water they poured into a bottle. We didn’t want to make a fuss because it was a nicer place and my friend had picked it out as a treat for their first time in London

Most fine dining/high end places are like this in my experience.
Where I work the only small bottled water is topo Chico.

Most people want more than a single glass of water so the big bottles make sense. Most of my solo diners who get them still drink over half the bottle. Most groups will finish off the bottle

It's "Taffel Wasser" in German (literally "water for the table")
I had to travel A LOT overseas for business and we had extremely, obnoxiously anal directors who would review every charge on every receipt.
I learned the phrase for tap water in every language possible. And if they brought a bottled water anyway, I'd call over the manager and demand they remove the charge as I did not order it.

I feel like my city just has good tap water then.
Like, I definitely have experienced the "omg, this glass of water is transcendent, this is truly divine nectar" shit, but i feel that whenever the water is super icy. I have a filtered pitcher, and that water is just as good or better than any other water i've drank.

So, I'm a coffee nerd and re-mineralise my filtered (tap isn't safe to drink in my country) water for coffee. Honestly, I’d feel ok about that. Most restaurants are charging more like 5x retail on drinks, especially alcohol. Ever look at beer prices at a US-based stadium? They’re like 10x retail.

Had the same thing happen to me in The Dominican Republic. Lesson learned, tap is always fine. But Acqua Panna is amazing

That's probably a good thing. The tap water isn't even close to being safe to drink in the Dominican Republic. Outdated infrastructure, insufficient filtration and chlorination. If you're lucky you'd just get a bad stomach and diarrhea. If you're unlucky you could end up with bacterial infections or intestinal parasites.. choosing bottled water was definitely the right choice there.

That's some good ass water. I wouldn't buy it in the wild but I'll drink the fuck out of it on a cruise ship when it's included in the price.

Always assume if it’s not tap, it’s going to cost you.
$8 actually isn’t bad. I’ve seen much worse.

Feel you’re a little naive… nothing is free, especially in a sit down and waitered restaurant… fwiw you was entitled to take the bottle away with you, you owned it

I delivered this water to a megachurch once. It was two 12 or 15 bottle packs and they were the small bottles totaling $50+. I wonder if holy water is holier when it’s expensive water.

When I go on cruises I get super excited that it’s included in my beverage package.
