I see this a lot in MTG Arena as well - When people realize they're about to lose they'll make each turn go down to the very last second, hoping you get frustrated and just leave - They can play quickly for the first half, but once the tides turn? Every single turn takes the exact maximum amount of time.

Slow play is now reportable in MTGA, so now if they are dead to rights but force the last 2 turns to take full time, that is an infraction that could build up to a ban, if everyone starts reporting this kind of behavior.

Surely somehow they can detect a game is closer to finishing and decrease turn time.. Right?

u/Maleficent-Gain-3179 8h ago
The longer the game goes on the more information people have to process as well

u/riverwaterinsox 7h ago
It's pretty hard to heuristically determine when the game is close to ending in Mtg. Games can stall out even if a player has low life or is losing on board. Also certain combo decks may be losing by a large margin, then pull off a long and complicated turn to swing the game, which this would unfairly punish

Hell yeah when did they add that feature? Man was it a long time coming

u/makitstop 10h ago
honestly, i just find it funny whenever that happens, i've had times where people have straight up walked away from their computers because they were losing so hard to a couple of my decks, lol

u/Radioactivocalypse 10h ago
Same happens in hearthstone.
I think they shortened the length of time you can delay it for, and get less time if you deliberately (or accidentally) run down the clock

I think this happens because when people know it's over and are playing the mobile app, they just close the app rather than conceding and then closing the app.

Many people hate blue players because of the cards they play (counterspells and bounces). I hate blue players because as long as they have a single mana open, priority passes back to them whenever I try to do anything. They’ll take an extra 5 seconds multiple times on each of MY turns, which really adds up.

u/not-skaven-yes-yes 9h ago
I'm so glad that the only online game I play (Kards) has a feature where taking too long lowers the amount of play time for subsequent turns and if it gets bad enough will force you to start to play within 20 sec or skip your turn.

u/Dismas-Baised 8h ago
Man i used to love that game but fuck its balancing is horrible atp most decks just feel like playing solitaire with how much suppression, weather and the like there is
3
u/ForeverDM4life 9h ago
What's weird is, I've never had that happen to me in Master Duel, which is strange because Yugioh players are probably the most toxic tcg players.

u/jointheredditarmy 3h ago
Little did they know griefing me is like wrestling with a pig. I Immediate pop open another game and burn the rope down to the last second just like them. Unsurprisingly most of them leave after a couple of turns
1
u/Scary_Corner3489 2h ago
It's worse than that. It's the whole "this guy killed me in an online game, he is so bad" thing.
They believe (to save their pride) you lucked out or played a cheap win and so the timer is just them saying "fuck you, this is your reward" to satisfy their bitterness.

I never resign when they want to waste my time. A win is a win, a loss is a loss and I will wait for my win while they wait for their loss. If I had anything better to do I wouldn't be playing chess in the first place lmao

u/waifuwarrior77 7h ago
When I queue for a game, I am committing that amount of time. I have nowhere else to be!

Why haven't you pre moved checkmate?
9
u/Bloodless10 8h ago
What is that?
17
u/staleChips_ 7h ago
might be late but it is when you move even if its still their turn yet, so the moment they make a move your "premove" piece will be placed on the board as intended as long as their previous move doesn't result on check, kiling your premoved piece, or blocking them.
srry if english and format is bad but i hope you get the idea.

No offense but how did your OPP have at least 11 extra minutes compared to your time before now?
36
u/FornyHucker22 11h ago
could be a 15/10 or 30m game
4
u/zepherth GREEN 11h ago
I mean that the time left before this turn would be 17:18 for black and 6:17 for white.
3
u/GuardBuffalo 11h ago
Right didn’t they answer that question though? There was either increment or the game time control was higher than 17m and 18second.
18
u/Fit_Employment_2944 11h ago
Because OP used their time better and their opponent played quickly and blundered

u/Soft_Lunch_183 10h ago
People play longer time controls then rush their moves and don't use the time, happens all the time online
11
u/scrimblojimbus 10h ago
Premove Rc1, Kf2, Ke1, Kd1, promote pawn and ladder mate. Go make cup of tea and smile to yourself as you think about how your opponent is still watching the game hoping you'll quit, wasting his own time while thinking he's wasting yours
7
u/Tirux 6h ago
According to my FIL in this situation if you don't do a check mate in 10 turns the game is a tie.
...he was BS right?

u/Eena-Rin Why Do They Let Me Make These Myself??? 3h ago
If you're playing with a kid and they're drawing it out to be a little shit I could see that being a thing, but I've not heard of it before. I believe the rule is something like "the board can't have the same state 3 times or it's a tie", to stop people going back and forth between safe squares

yeah this is why i only play 3 min games, still happens sometime but tolerable. Also I suck so not getting into high elo anytime soon
4
u/TCFNationalBank 11h ago
Can you submit multiple pre moves and afk? I don't play much but it looks like you should be able to set up endgame without much risk here. King next to rook, promote pawn, stagger rook/queen and push him to back rank

u/18minusPi2over36 10h ago
I never understood why people do this. I assume most people who encounter this also just lock in a few premoves, take a quick snack break, and call the bluff, so it doesn't do much for safeguarding the staller's Elo. And even on those occasions it does work, that "You won! By abandonment" on the game-end screen must feel just so shameful to look at.

u/NuclearGriffin 7h ago
This is unfortunately a very common tactic used by people in matchmaking games. Even in games with timed rounds, they will just sit there and run out the clock.
Used to happen to me all the time in MTG Arena

I had a guy force a draw because he knew I was going to win so he just moved his king to force it.Â

Sub-1100 (same as me) he shouldn't worry about his elo. He should focus on getting good.

People do this in so many games, I often ensure to waste their time back, oh you gonna wait until the very last moment to make your move in this TCG? I have all the time in the world, I will watch a video while I wait, you can't exhaust my patience

u/backwardbuttplug 11h ago
Ah, millenials that never learned to handle a loss. My friend would have them rage quit online matches in many games because they were about to lose. The forfeit hurt both players every time it seemed.

u/bunny_the-2d_simp 11h ago
That's not just millennials immo. Those people are there in every single generation
3
u/scrimblojimbus 10h ago
"millennials" is crazy lmao they are like 40 now. Are you on deaths door unc?
1
u/BuildAnything4 10h ago
yeah, it's the same with zoomers. My friend who just started chess last week was playing some zoomers who go to chess camp every year. The whole group of zoomers teamed up on him, he crushed them in 20 moves, and they just ended up crying and doing the 6-7 hand thing until their timers ran down.

u/Aura1661 11h ago
This is a valid strategy. You should do everything in your power to win and this was his best option.
