Do you use an iPhone? I've just checked and YT Premium is €15.99 here in Spain. I ask because subscriptions are more expensive if you purchase them in-app from an Apple device (because they take a cut of the price, so Google makes the price higher so that they still get the same amount of money). So if you subscribe through your browser instead of from the YouTube app you'll get the lower price. If you don't have an iPhone I have no idea what's going on here
13
u/patpatpaa 11h ago
I use iphone. I had no idea.
12
u/HankHippopopolous 10h ago
That goes for most things. If possible never subscribe to anything directly through an app or the AppStore because you’ll always be paying the 30% apple tax.
Always check if whatever company it is you’re subscribing to has a website because most of the time you will save money.

They have the nerve to do stuff like this then complain about piracy and people using ad blockers & VPNs.

u/Panorabifle 12h ago
Firefox + ad blocker (works on mobile too) and never be visually assaulted by ads anymore

Even better: use Morphe on Android or modded IPAs on iOS

On mobile I use YouTube Morphe, an alternate app that's literally the exact same but without ads

It also displays dislikes and skips most sponsorship content.

I pay 3 euros for VPN and connect to Albania to watch youtube. I also use it to watch football. It is very easy to find which country shows champions league games on a open channel.

Ad blocks are not available on all devices (or at least not nearly as easily as on a PC) and its not just about not watching ads. Computer watchers only account for ~12% of youtubes traffic, youtube offers youtube music which I hear is a pretty good service, and you can listen to things while your phone is off which is quite nice and useful for me at work. Ads not playing on any device is nice because installing adblockers that work for youtube on a phone or smartTV (which acounts for ~70% of youtubes traffic) is vastly harder and the ads are vastly longer at around 90+ seconds after every single video. Plus, its not actually 21€ if you get on a computer rather than apples store, its closer to 15€ or 12 pounds.

u/csabinho 10h ago
21 €? Which country? And you're on iOS, I guess.

u/Hillthrin 9h ago
Youtube's the one place I don't mind paying for. I watch it a lot. It has some movies and TV shows and there's a ton of creators I love and want them to get some of my money without going all in on a patreon.

u/LolBoyLuke 12h ago
what do you mean "most" videos ad free? They're all ad-free, no?
9
u/rhinokick 12h ago
I think they mean sponsorships and ads built into the video itself, rather than ads served by YouTube. Youtube can't really remove those.
10
u/fumeextractor 12h ago
I mean they could. The "jump ahead" feature that premium offers almost always skips the sponsored segments. They could also force creators to mark the beginning and end of sponsor segments and allow auto-skipping them for Premium users (so what SponsorBlock does but on YT's side).
2
u/ultraboomkin 10h ago
I think it says “most” because it’s giving you the option of Premium and Premium Lite. Premium Lite is like Premium but without YouTube Music included, so you still get ads on music videos.

u/pinkstrawberry94 12h ago
Do we need a post about how YT ducks every week? Either get the god damm ad blocker that everyone tells you to do or stfu already. Literally is no other solution. YouTube isn't going to lower their price or give you less ads because they feel bad for you.

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat 11h ago

YouTube has ads? Ive been using Ublock and Firefox for so long I can't remember the last time I saw one. Funny enough I use Ublock and Chrome on my work PC and play music sometimes all day without ads.
2
u/distrox 10h ago
Yeah but this is more relevant for mobile. I mean sure you can watch YouTube on a browser on mobile but that's extra steps. People pay for convenience. I don't though. After they removed the cheapest YouTube premium who's only purpose for me was ad removal, I stopped watching YouTube on mobile altogether.
That being said I know there are apps like vanced or whatever the newest one is called. If I did want to watch YouTube, I'd use those.

It's not just ad free is it? For me to be able to download videos and listen to them with the screen off is a really big deal.
I also don't have any other streaming like Netflix or AppleTv. All i use is YouTube.
Also family tier is €30 and you got 5 slots.
5
u/NoCoolSenpai 10h ago
If YouTube Music didn’t have goated recommendations the 10% of time it does, I’d have long switched to other alternatives, ad-free videos are just a bonus for me atp

u/TophatOwl_ 9h ago
Premium is smart IF you watch on a TV because after every video you get 90+ seconds of ads every single time and you cant easily install an adblocker. Also I dont actually know what is excluded in terms of ads because I have premium and I never run into ads whenever I watch literally anything.
2
u/CarnifexGunner 2h ago
All you need is a VPN on your TV. Set it to Albania, and there's no more ads.

If you have an apple phone/ipad, NEVER sign up through the app. You're charged 30% more than if you sign up through a web browser.
Apple adds 30% to every transaction that happens through an app on iOS.

Lmao premium in Serbia is around 8 and i pay 15 for family plan (5 more ppl)
2
u/glasgowgeg 11h ago
The minimum wage in Serbia is the equivalent of about €3.16/hour though, according to Google.
So you're paying aboyt 2.53 hours of minimum wage for it. The equivalent in the UK would be about £32.17/month for a single user, it's £12.99 here, so about 1.02 hours of minimum wage.
1
u/TophatOwl_ 9h ago
Thats actually a really bad comparison because in Serbia the cost of living is also meaningfully lower. If you actually factor in the other expenses they have (like 58% cheaper housing).
When you actually take into account their economic environment and compare to the median salary (which is a far better measure) youre looking at something closer to 7-9 quid if you ported it over here which is still cheaper than for one person in the UK.

Companies are paying youtube to show their adds. Viewers are paying youtube to not watch the adds. Now, that's what I call profiting!

u/Important_Power_2148 12h ago
I think they say that because some videos creators are sponsored and contain in video sponsorship ads, like some Disney creators with Park Candy, or Magic Candle company. One guy i watch is sponsored by the drinks supplement company LMNT. Those are not youtube attached ads, they are built into the videos. People probably complained that the youtube premium did not remove them too.
