When they announced there could be ads, I promised myself I would cancel the moment I saw the first ad. Then I saw an increase in price, so I immediately cancelled.

Getting less and paying more for it. Fuck the mouse.

u/Not_Allowed_to_Die 12h ago

They just pulled a huge scam too. I had Hulu at a discounted rate of $1.99 a month for a year. After 5 months, they locked my account section up so I couldn't look at it at all for well over a month, and then charged me $12.99 for a month. My credit card reversed it, and Hulu is now freaking out because I canceled it all.

17

u/DieselOrc 6h ago

Cancelled when they announced ads on all tiers. Funny thing is I just had it in case I wanted to watch something so I was giving them money for nothing most months.

Something something enshitificat-

Ehhhh nevermind y’all already know the rest.

15

u/Spare-Shirt24 9h ago

It pissed me off when streaming started inserting ads!

When streaming began, the whole premise was "you're paying a subscription fee so we dont need to show ads". Then one by one, they started putting ads. Then raising the prices, then adding new tiers that were ad-free.

It's beyond ridiculous now.

I canceled last year.

I'm done with streaming.  I'm back to physical media.

Go to your library.  They have more than books to check out.

i cancelled everything and assumed i would start pirating, but what's ended up happening instead is that i just watch nothing.

247

u/H_J_Rose 12h ago

Tbh that’s way better than giving any of them your money.

40

u/Putrid-VII 10h ago

...who gets the money from the pirating though?

You. Because you're not giving fuckwad corporations money.

Did the very same thing already and never look back! More free time and money. Besides, there are not too much to watch at the first place to pay such an amount to some streaming company. Shitty content mostly or old that you watched few times. What’s the reason?! And they ruined old good movie/series (45m, 22 per season) concept demand and just copy/paste shitty series with the story repeating like for imbeciles.

I personally have a plex server that has around 25tb of data on it...movies, TV shows, concerts....I also use keepstreams that allows me to rip/download stuff off of all of the streaming sites, and then I torrent whatever I cant find there. All my friends use it and because I have so much content on there they've all canceled their streaming services in favor of my free stuff.

I just love helping people save money.

"If buying isnt owning, then pirating isnt stealing."

12

u/Any-Mammoth-3251 8h ago

For noobs like myself, do you have some sort of self starter guide you would recommend for setting something like this up? I have cancelled everything except Netflix (that's next if they introduce ads where I am) and torrent some things but would like to set up my own library. I was thinking of going back to burning CDs but I don't even think my laptop supports those anymore.

Fun fact. If you have a library card there is an excellent chance your local library is part of the Kanopy streaming platform. This will allow you to "check out" thirty or more movies, TV series, etc a month via your library card

u/Ok_Zookeepergame5141 12h ago

I'm going to try this. Ngl... it will be like going cold turkey from heroin.

14

u/Spare-Shirt24 12h ago

It's definitely different.

I've also picked up other ways to entertain myself in the evenings.  I'm learning a new language, picked up watercolor painting, read more, etc.

When I want to zone out and watch something, I pop in a DVD, or check one out from the library.

16

u/AppropriateDinner528 12h ago

I finally discovered DVD's from the library. It's like taking a trip back in time to Blockbuster.

It is a whole different experience when you plan your viewing ahead. No more endless doom scrolling trying to find something to watch. We watch what we check out and that's the end of it.

6

u/SpotweldPro1300 12h ago

Or like going from heroin to Richard Simmons aerobics tapes.

Honestly thats something people fail to realize, it's a great idea, thank you for the reminder

51

u/JROCC_CA 12h ago

I love this idea! I have a whole bookshelf, full of DVDs and Blu-rays. I never gave up on physical media. I still look for used DVDs that I don’t own.

19

u/InterestingLion6041 12h ago

Same. My husband and I are closing in on 50 so we have a ton of DVDs from back in the day when that was the way you watched new movies outside of going to the theater. Streaming was cool af when it first came around ngl and we got rid of cable to move to streaming. But, like with anything in this capitalistic hellscape, media companies wanting to extract every $ they can from us, ruined it. Now it's like buying a la carte cable. $30 for this platform, $25 for this other one... it's now more expensive to have all of the streaming platforms than it is to have cable again. I have to sit down and figure out which ones I pay for, which ones my husband pays for, and which my daughter pays for and either cancel them all or keep only the ones we use regularly. I don't think our Disney+ subscription is being used much anymore. My daughter watched all she wanted to watch and now I think I'm just paying for a platform no one watches. I'm so sick of this shit... the people with the most are trying to extract every cent they can from people with the least. In every aspect of our lives.

6

u/pit-of-despair 11h ago

Yeah, I’m with you about the physical media thing. A few years ago the last video store in my town went out of business and I scored big time on new and used videos for cheap. I had a lot even before that.

6

u/squaige 12h ago

Our library has a ton of passes for museums/gardens around us (probably more but that’s what I’ve looked for) and a whole catalogue of random tools, party stuff, house stuff you can reserve to check out.

8

u/QueefTamer 11h ago edited 11h ago

Yes. Going to the library is fun. My gf gets her book and I get the movies. I got a bluray player for a good deal. They also rent bluray players for free. They have a lot of games and they allow you to rent it for a full month at our place.

6

u/chriseldonhelm 10h ago

My wife and I have done the same. There is a used electronic store that sells dvds and bluerays cheap. We are building are collection up.

3

u/PauI_MuadDib 11h ago

You can stream through your library too. My library offers Binge Passes through Hoopla and you get free access to certain subscription services for, I think a week. My partner watches Hallmark+ that way 😂

3

u/SuspendedResolution 11h ago

Thanks for reminding me I need to get a new library card.

Cancel it. Companies will keep getting away with this shit if people keep paying for it

49

u/Cash_Visible 8h ago

That’s the problem. People bitch and moan but subscriber growth continues to climb

59

u/BisonThunderclap 10h ago

This is Disney's very public plan. Low price to entice consumers into buying it and then slow step up to get past the loss, to break even and then profit.

The problem is that they have by far the best catalog out there, especially when you get one of the bundles.

17

u/no-sleep-only-code 6h ago

If you really like Disney’s stuff I guess. Best is debatable.

7

u/Urdnought 7h ago

Cancel your subscriptions. You're complicit in them raising prices on DIGITAL goods for no reason other than their own greed if you keep your subscription. Trust me that your child doesn't need to watch Moana for the 725th time, and if they do then just buy the damn bluray for less than your Disney+ monthly charge would have been to begin with

19

u/lunchstocks 12h ago

If they keep hiking the price we‘ll all break even on our hdds in no time!

53

u/BigGayGinger4 12h ago

If a single streaming service is $260 per year, and you would need three or four of them to consume everything that you want to watch....

Then a couple new HDDs per year for redundancies and backups are still way cheaper.

These corps are doing this shit to themselves. Your cute teleplays are not worth giant chunks of our meager paychecks.

It shouldn't be legal to increase the price automatically on a monthly subscription like this. You used to be able to get grandfathered into things...

119

u/dreamkruiser 12h ago

Does anyone know why? Shouldn't these clowns need to justify rate increases? They ride on the back of shared fiber networks, nothing about their business justifies more increases.

131

u/theMeatman7 12h ago

The justification is that you still have more money to take.

7

u/thanatoswaits 5h ago

Honestly, this is really it.  I'm assuming its the same as what they did to Disneyland - just keep raising the price as long as people keep coming.

I mean CEO’s have a fiduciary duty to make investors more money each year. So that’s all the justification they need. Limitless growth and all. Sucks.

10

u/BlackThundaCat 11h ago

Yeah…why does their fiduciary duty seem to always outweigh every other duty out there?! Seems like it would be a simple change to make a law that prioritizes something else besides the shareholders.

Cancel your subscriptions! We used to get 130+ channels for less than $100 bucks. Basic cable was like $40 bucks! Now you get 4-5 streaming services with rotating seasons of the same crap for $100/month. Just stop paying for this shit. You have a choice. I cancelled nearly all of our streaming in November of last year and it felt great TBH.

12

u/Antique-Coach-214 11h ago

Or you can get 130+ channels, and 8 cable subscription services for 100+ sales tax.

I cancelled Netflix a month ago, something I've been subscribing to since 2008 - The only reason I haven't cancelled Disney/Hulu is because I'm still on a much older Verizon plan that they keep trying to get me to "upgrade" [to a worse plan for more money] that pays for the bundle for me. I'll use the app for free, and would pay for it at a reasonable cost, but I'm not paying those prices.

7

u/TinyAdeptness5166 12h ago

I'm in a similar situation, I get the low tier of HBO Max for free with my phone plan, it's not great but sometimes more convenient

26

u/TunaOnWytNoCrust 3h ago

What do you mean not again?? It's going to be again and again and again forever.

74

u/quikmantx 12h ago

I cut Netflix for the first time since 2018 2 weeks ago. I don't pay for Disney+ but I do pay for Hulu.

When Hulu gets swallowed into Disney+, I'll probably cut it too. I hate ads and I expect a big price increase as a result of them putting the two together.

36

u/MadTube 11h ago

Been subscribed to Disney+ since its inception. Last year, I barely squeaked by on the price hike. My renewal was just before the big jump. So my subscription went from $70 (last year) to $190 (this year).

Absolutely the fuck not. Glad I tweaked my Jellyfin.

It’s going to happen eventually too. Bc Hulu is the reason alot of people even buy the Disney plus bundle. Once they realize this they’re going to make Hulu only obtainable with Disney Plus and have it be a sub app within Disney plus

13

u/peon2 11h ago

Once they realize this

They've realized this. Hulu is being phased out. You can already move your Hulu profile over to Disney Plus so you have the favorites and continue watching stuff ported over. All Hulu shows can be watched on Disney+ now. They're just slowly doing the phase out

7

u/uwunuzzlesch 12h ago

I don't think they care bc if you pay for Disney you get all of Disney and Hulu

7

u/MoonPieKitty 10h ago

I was fine when streaming for a whole family was around 10 bucks. I could stop pirating for little money, and I didn’t have to watch ads like on TV. Now those greedy fuckers all want 20+ bucks, track your logins so you’re forced to upgrade to a more expensive plan for multiple people, produce mostly trash, and have introduced ads into the basic subscription tiers. They’re becoming unpleasant and inconvenient for the user overall which was the ONLY reason so many people switchted to them in the first place. I guess I’m back to sailing the seven seas.

6

u/ConfessorKahlan 7h ago

I don’t even understand because all the Hulu content is on Disney+. So why am I paying for a “bundle” when one part of the bundle actually has 2 parts?

CANCEL! They’ll come back in a month with a $4.99/month for a year deal. That’s what I’m on rn. When it’s up I plan to cancel again 😉

must mean they gave some executives a pay raise so they have to jack up prices to cover it

I have Hulu w ads and now it's going up in price again..I'll be canceling as it's getting out of hand now.

6

u/Lorrai 12h ago

Reading all these comments just encouraged me to cancel as well.

u/nexetpl 12h ago

22 dollars per month? What does this plan include?

4

u/Mrrrrggggl 4h ago

Yearly price hikes.

Didn't they just raise prices, as well as remove all ad free options? Like two months ago?

They are literally speed running seeing how far they can push their customer base before they push back.

What the actual FUCK they JUST increased it!!!

5

u/_poppaq 12h ago

Cancel it!

We just canceled ours, not sure why everyone puts up with the price increases.

4

u/indomike14 12h ago

If you share the cost with friends and family it's less expensive... allegedly.

It's insane so many of us accepted a half dozen tv subscriptions in our lives. If you have an absolute must see show and don't wanna sail the high seas, just sub for a month after the season is over and binge it over the month. It's not like the 90's when we got 25 episode seasons. You're getting 6 to 12 episodes tops. That can be knocked out easily in a month with some effort. Then move on

4

u/Mysterious-World6152 9h ago

In the UK, you don’t pay for Hulu separately because it is completely included as a brand hub inside your standard Disney+ subscription which I pay £7.99 which is about $10

Launch price was $7 with no ads.

Now it’s $21.50 for no ads.

A tripling in price for the same service. That’s absurd.

JFC people stop using streaming services if you're just going to complain about being milked. This is like the TCG people who just HAVE to buy the next Pokemon expansion. Move on and find a more sustainable form of entertainment. May I suggest the library where about half of the source material for movies and shows comes from. We don't have to be a heteronomous species addicted to screens. Creature comforts are fine and everything but learn to have some control and know how to pivot when you start to get priced out.

7

u/RyAllDaddy69 11h ago

No, you’re a fucking heteronomous species.

I am dropping Disney, Hulu and Paramount. They don't get watched enough to keep spending more on them for just one or two shows.

10

u/_AmenMyBrother_ 3h ago

I cancelled all my streaming services last year. Thought i would care or miss them And add it back. I barely thought about it or even noticed. It was way easier than i thought. I had netflix, apple, disney, espn+, hulu, and hbomax. I have paramount still through a 2 year free walmart+ but i havent rven tolurned that on

3

u/olreddog 12h ago

Yup. I dropped them after the last hike. Not worth it

3

u/UsualGarage 12h ago

Fucking cancel it

3

u/AlpineRavenNE 12h ago

I dropped them when they said they were going to host AI user generated content. They’re terrible and there is hardly any good content on their platform except legacy IP

3

u/engineerdrummer 12h ago

I canceled mine this month. They put ads on it and went up on the price. Fuck them

3

u/im_wudini 11h ago

Why does this surprise anyone this time of year? It's Disney's annual least magical time of the year, the end of their fiscal one. All prices go up. You should all be used to this by now.

3

u/gamestar721 11h ago

Buy physical media. It's the only way.

3

u/xChoke1x 11h ago

The get what the market will bare. We keep paying it, they keep upping it.

Nobody ever drops this shit. We just bitch about it. Look at the data, they do this shit and people just keep paying it.
