Ruined by Technology Roblox age verification verified my 6 years old nephew as 17 years old
Most kiddos like Roblox, and nephew is no exception. So when he came to me and asked me to help him set up an account, I decided to let him(and play under my supervision since I also happen to have an account). When we reached the face recognition section, it absolutely SUCKED ASS CUS WHAT DO YOU MEAN A BOY WHO IS AT HIS TENDER AGE OF GOD DAMN SIX IS SEVENTEEN. AND THE WORST PART IS I CAN’T REVERT IT TO HIS ACTUAL AGE FOR SOME REASON.
Edit: We decided not to play Roblox again after this shenanigan(which I should have done from the start)

u/moitch 17h ago
The fact we're using facial recognition on children scares me even more.. that scan and associated metadata will forever be part of some database.
260
u/CedarWolf 17h ago
Well, it will be part of some database until it gets leaked or cracked or whatever, and then it will be out on the Internet, being used for only God knows what.
124
u/Vsx 16h ago
It doesn't have to be leaked or cracked. These companies sell your information willingly for what amounts to pennies.
37
u/bargu 14h ago
I've worked for a big insurance company and those fuckers trade your data like Pokemon cards, no fucks given about privacy and that was 10+ years ago.
25
u/Uncommonality 13h ago
It's only grown more intense. One of my friends from college spent some time working at a data broker. She said it's extremely shady work, out of what amounts to an entirely unmarked office building with the company having some nonsense name and effectively zero net presence except for their business registration
They primarily trade portfolios of people. Typically each person's portfolio has a unique ID, which is done to prevent the same data from being traded multiple times, and it contains everything.
All personal information you've ever dropped online, any and all documents or pictures of you hosted online, any and all confirmed and potential interests you may have, your social media accounts, the frequency of their use and your posting habits, active and inactive hours, AI analyzed trends in your speech and means of expression on services like Discord, Reddit, Whatsapp and such, links to other portfolios such as family, colleagues, friends, people you may have went to school with, your personal and professional history, family status, health conditions (confirmed and potential), and so, so, so much more.
Using a portfolio it's possible to model your psychology, place you into one of several advertising profiles and customize your experience via a service like Google AdSense to maximize engagement.

While it’s objectively worse for children to have to do this, adults will also have to scan their face or ID to prove they’re an adult. Which has presented a data risk through data breaches of third-party companies doing the ID verification, like the one that partnered with Discord.
11
u/macaronysalad 15h ago
An annoying part of data sharing which needs to be regulated. You can do all the vetting in the world for a company you choose to do business with, but there is nothing legally stopping them from sharing your data with third parties who you have no idea about and how they are or aren't protecting your data. Most spam people get or breaches they're subjected to isn't even from the original company they shared data with. It's out of control and only getting worse because the government loves this loophole overriding our 4th amendment by using our tax dollars to purchase this data.

u/Mcnugget84 16h ago
I have some really bad news.
It’s already there. I use Google Photos. I have ultrasound pictures that were stored in the cloud before AI was a thing.
Now…. It can tell from those pictures which of my twins is which from some damn early ultrasounds.
10
u/baconboner69xD 16h ago
Yeah… privacy isn’t really a thing anymore. This kids identity was probably bought and sold 50 times already.
7
u/Mcnugget84 16h ago
I’m aware…. My kids are safer riding their bike to the local park than on their tablet. I’m glad they get outside and have IRL friends.
4
u/Cudi_buddy 15h ago
Good for you. I feel there was this weird generation or two of parents that were incredibly ignorant to the dangers of tablet/smart phones while being terrified to let their kids play in the yard with the neighbors. Feel like I see it slowly changing. Unfortunately that seems to be because all the data coming out about how damaging those devices are for young minds.

Even without that, our devices, especially with American OSes and their affiliates (except the open source version), actively watches and listens us. Even if you are far away from your devices, not even in the same network, the moment other people's devices sees or hears you in the wild, your algorithm has been changed

Honestly anything that replaces it will have the same issue as a game that mainly caters to children that becomes the biggest game for that market. It took them far to long to get serious but they've implemented better controls and checks to deal with creeps. Just on this post OP is omitting details about this. They didnt click the under 13 age group when making the roblox account, if they did the system would allow at max the 9-12 age group after facial scan which is only required to enable chat.

That addenum of "AI can make errors please verfiy results" is going to lead to so much shit in the future. In this case, it wouldn’t be for the child (because of their age and not having an ID). Parent accounts for the child would need to give their ID or biometrics, though, to link to their child’s.
So these companies can still get someone’s ID to store as data.

Yo, not gonna tell you how to raise your kids, but if you're gonna give them games try Minecraft instead. The list of grievous issues with Roblox is long but I'll keep it short.
There's no moderation and people post sex games
There has been multiple allegations associated with Roblox basically doing nothing about adults interacting with kids.
Pedos run rampant on it, in fact a YouTuber got banned for trying to bust some one doing such a thing and reporting them to Roblox.
My current boss is in the middle of a court case where not once but twice someone tried to traffic his daughter. Thankfully they trusted their dad enough to immediately tell him.
Anyway just thought you should know that this game is a literal danger in your household to children.
Play Mincraft with your kiddo it's basically digital Legos.
75
u/linkingconsequences 15h ago
i’d also add that roblox is also essentially a digital sweatshop that heavily incentivizes microtransactions, gives pennies to the people that actually made the games and their business model encourages slop games over actual well made games. there are some gems there but still.
additionally if you really want to the kid a game that’s age appropriate and they like, give them a lego game. they’re fun and generally well made

I spent my teens playing Minecraft starting right after its full release, Java edition as it’s now known, and it was a blast. Played on some genuinely well moderated servers and LAN worlds with friends and family. Learned quite a bit about computers too, through things like modding the game and creating my own server and texture pack. That and digital art led to me being savvy enough to do get a tech support job in college.
But yeah, I was so excited when Minecraft hit the scene because it felt exactly like digital Legos to me. My family loved building stuff with Legos but our creations always had their limits due to the cost of Legos.
Java Edition with a Realm is a very easy way for kids to safely play with friends and family and not worry about micro transactions or perverts; Bedrock is a bit more micro transaction friendly with its menu and stuff.

16
u/Tandy2000 16h ago
Yeah, there is a whole problem being discussed here but there's also the issue that this 6 year old is playing Roblox at all.
Kids need to develop their critical thinking skills a lot more before interacting with strangers online. If you are gonna let your 6 year old play games online, it should only be stuff like Mario Kart where it's strictly controlled with no communication between players, or if you absolutely must, some strictly controlled environment where they can play with friends like a Minecraft server you control.
I love video games and I play video games with my daughter, but there is 0 chance I would ever let her play online games alone when she's 6 years old. Keep them to offline stuff, there's way more than enough stuff to play.

The content you can see would blow your mind. One example would be how there were kids being exposed to an older clip where a veteran was Livestream, got dumped by his girlfriend on stream, and shot himself in the head. Turning chat off doesn't stop that. Children under the age of 13 legally aren't allowed to be on these platforms.
13
u/napstablooky2 16h ago

It depends on the social situation of OPs nephew. If for example all of that boys friends play Roblox, him not being allowed to could have severe social consequences and cause him to become more distanced from his friends, or worst case, even lose them completely and get bullied as the kid with super strict parents etc.
Children are very brutal in that aspect.
It should not be that way in an ideal world, but it is.
And as long as it is done in moderation, under supervision, and with age appropriate games I think it is okay.

Age verification is the biggest scam on the internet. It's in the hands of the parents. If your kid is doing stuff they are to young to be doing it's bad parenting. Whole face verification etc is just another way to collect data.
And normally the only agency in the world that actually regulates stuff (the EU) are the biggest supporters of this fiasco, so it is never going away.

Or… You could’ve just manually verified the birthday instead of letting an AI do it, and the child would be in the correct age group. It’s not a person that scans the face and determines age, it’s an AI, so it’s bound to be wrong sometimes.
I see so many people complaining ab being put in the wrong age group, and they never actually try to manually fix it, they just complain 💀

you couldn’t pay me to feed images of my children into an AI databank.

I mean, it’s outwardly insane that part of their process is to just guess and then apply that age. That is indeed an insane thing to do and should be called out as such.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought you needed to give legal documentation to verify your age without the face scanner? A lot of people are not comfortable with that

Why would Roblox use AI to guess children's age in the first place. I get people can adjust it manually, but having it guess-timate an age in the first place seem asinine

It’s insane that to “keep kids safe” they are asking children to be photographed and then judged by an AI.

I'd rather AI guess my age wrong than share my ID with a company (either Roblox or third party)

damn that some brilliant ai training strategy, give a bunch of kids the wrong age and the family will train the AI and depending on country maybe even share legal documentation

Have you suggested their parents to do actual parenting, instead of letting exploitative, defective AI systems determine their age and what they can and can't do online?

Someone in a board room was like “this will be great!” And then next year comes and holy shit.

What do you mean, this cesspool game requires uploading pictures of your children for "age verification"? That alone sounds fucking sus.

My 20 year old partner got her twitch account suspended because the AI thought she was younger than 12
