question/suggestion Experienced guitarist but struggling to understand math rock rhythms and how to break out of basic 4/4

I've been playing guitar for a while, so I'm comfortable with chords, solos, and playing in general, but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the rhythmic side of math rock and Midwest emo.

I'm used to making a chord progression in 4/4, looping it, and playing a solo over it. That's pretty much what I've always done, and I'm getting bored with it.

I've been trying to learn 3/4 strumming patterns and things like grouping eighth notes into 3+2+3 or 3+3+2, but I don't think I fully understand what I'm actually doing or how to use it musically.

One thing that's really confusing me is the difference between playing eighth notes in a math rock riff and just playing a regular guitar solo. Like, what actually makes something sound like math rock rhythmically instead of just a Guns N' Roses-style solo over some chords? Is it the accents, where the notes fall, the phrasing, or something else entirely?

I really want to get away from the same old 4/4 loops and start writing more interesting guitar parts, especially stuff inspired by Midwest emo and math rock, but I feel like I'm missing some fundamental understanding of rhythm that's keeping me stuck.

If anyone can explain this in a way that might make it click, or point me toward some good YouTube lessons or other resources, I'd really appreciate it. I'm not necessarily looking to learn more complicated solos, I want to understand how to actually write more interesting rhythms and guitar parts.

But this is a picture of my buddy and I, he has since passed away. He has that tattoo on his wrist and I want to get the same one, but I can’t find a solid picture of it. And I remember him saying it was from a band. Not sure what band. But he was really into polar bear club, I hate myself, and American football. So I felt maybe this was the page to ask, does any me recognize this tattoo? Sorry if this is a shot in the dark. But figured I’d ask on here.

Discussion Hungry New Bands (looking for recommendations)

I'm writing an article on where the Emo genre is heading and was looking to find out which younger, more underground and mid-level bands this sub thinks are the most compelling in the genre right now. Bands who are really pushing themselves and the genre forward. Especially ones who formed in the last 10 years or so

Im interested in different types of sound too, who is killing it by being weird and abrasive? Any bands with a more mainstream pop focus? New sounds we've never heard before?

Any and all reccs would be cool, cheers!

Discussion wanna quit my band but we are getting kinda big

yes, allegations... been in the band for some years now, we have an album out and many people love it and planning to play in other cities/countries and some time ago it has come to my attention that there are serious rumors about our vocalist/guitarrist (both of us are the main songwritters but he writes the lyrics) in our hometown and i dont know how to proceed. this hits me hard because i have been abused in the past and beign close to someone like that is just fcking wrong, i feel like a dumbass bc of writing this

i, at the time, tried to talk about it with the other two, kick him out but one is very close to him and thinks is just rumors/lies fueld by jelousy and the other kinda supported me but he later didnt wanted to do with anything with the band and left shortly after. now two new guys arrived, i like them but they seem to be more close to the vocalist and dont know if they are aware of the rumors or that they just dont care. either way he has the accounts of everything (specialy the music publishers)

i personally havent seen any allgations either legal or online, just what some of the people in our local scene say about him (which are also assholes that also defend their own rap!st friends or have their own rumors) and there are multiple versions of what he supposley did yet they are kinda consistent. i want to kick him out but i dont think the rest of the band will agree with me.

a) convince the band kick him out and go forward without him and keep the clout we already have even tho his precense will linger in the project since we cowrote the songs. this feels very oportunistic

b) i leave, start from zero with new music before the shit hits the fan (in case the allegations turn out to be true)

i cannot pretend its all right, i dont want to be a predator defender and most importantly cant imagine the feeling the victims seeing their abuser have type of succses, i guess i have to start digging to know the origin of this rumors or cut my losses and start over.

regardless i feel kinda excluded in my own band and saddly there are so many examples of this situations in the emo comunity and music in general.

anyways what do yall think? whats youre favorite tunning

Heyy y'all, I've moved from NY to CT, and I'm not quite sure where the scene is over here. I'm in my 20's and I moved by Hartford about 6-ish months ago and I cannot find anywhere thats got some good house shows or any underground venues. If anyone knows where to go, or any suggestions on where to look, lmk :).

Discussion My colleague went to a Brand New concert. Should I try and get him fired for it?

At work yesterday, a coworker of mine casually mentioned having seen Brand New this week. I regret not confronting him on it. To me, this makes him a rape apologist, and I no longer feel comfortable working with him as a victim of assault myself. I personally believe that there should be some punishment for being a rape apologist, and that's not something that we should just let slide - he actively gave money to a predator. For further context, we work with teenagers in the context of mental health, which makes this decision even more egregious to me. It is completely unprofessional to be an abuse apologist in this line of work, and I find his decision to financially support Jesse Lacey, and mention it at work, to be 100% fireable. Am I overreacting?
