Western Xenharmonic Ecosystem vs. Global Living Traditions

Post image
3 Upvotes

Globally, 12-EDO accounts for > 99% of recorded music. This chart is a heuristic composite model comparing two completely different denominators outside 12-TET: the Western Xenharmonic/Synth Corpus vs. Global Living Traditions & Commercial Hardware.)

1. Western Xenharmonic & Isomorphic Ecosystem (Left):

Modeled from tagged release volume (Bandcamp #Nedo tags, Xenharmonic Wiki), Scala (.scl) preset libraries, and isomorphic hex controller mappings (Lumatone/Bosanquet):

- 19-EDO (~27%) & 31-EDO (~25%): Make up over half of Western microtonal output because composers prioritize meantone voice-leading and pure 5-limit/7-limit triads. On hexagonal Bosanquet controllers, 31-EDO's massive key count compresses into ergonomic chord shapes.

- 22-EDO (~15%): The favorite for superpyth, neutral intervals, and 11-limit harmony (Erlich, 1998).

2. Global Living Traditions & Commercial Hardware (Right):

Modeled from regional practitioner scale, conservatory standards, and commercial arranger hardware deployment:

- 24-EDO Grid (~48%): Codified at the 1932 Cairo Congress (Marcus, 1993; Racy, 2003). While acoustic Oud players dynamically inflect pitches, - 24-EDO is hardcoded into hundreds of thousands of commercial "Oriental" arranger keyboards (Yamaha PSR-A, Korg Pa, Roland E-A7) via dedicated -50 cent quarter-tone panel buttons.

- 7-EDO Approximation (~22%): The structural equi-heptatonic model (~171.4¢) behind Thai Piphat (Ranat ek) and African log xylophones (Amadinda, Timbila) (Ellis, 1885; Kubik, 1994; Garzoli, 2015).

- 53-EDO Grid (~13%): The formal Arel-Ezgi-Uzdilek 53-comma standard taught in Turkish conservatories and physically fretted onto the Turkish Tanbur (Bozkurt & Serra, 2009).

- 5-EDO Approximation (~10%): Structural approximation of Indonesian Slendro Gamelan (Kunst, 1949), though real ensembles intentionally tune with unique stretched octaves (embat).

Troll Chord (12-TET but Xenharmonic)

Thumbnail

Troll Chord is about three minutes of clean electro in plain 12-tone equal temperament, played entirely on two chips, an OPL FM synthesiser and a PSG.

Every chord is a piece of the harmonic series high enough to reach the 17th and 19th harmonics, rounded to the nearest semitone and stood on C. Harmonics 16, 17 and 19 of C are C, D flat and E flat; harmonics 12, 17, 18 and 19 of F, read up from C, are C, F sharp, G and A flat. In some other key each of these has a perfectly ordinary name. On C, in C, nothing lower than the 17th harmonic explains them.

Seven chords make the song: 16:17:19, 17:18:27, 16:17:27, 9:12:16:17, 17:24:27, 12:16:17:19 and 12:17:18:19. The eighth, 16:17:18:19, C D flat D E flat in root position, is the Troll Chord, and it is kept for the last bar. Its D, the 18th harmonic, is heard nowhere before it. E, the 5th harmonic, the note a theorist would reach for first, is heard nowhere at all. A low C sounds under everything, so the harmonics have a fundamental to belong to.

The rhythm is seven against four. The kick, the bass, the hats and the clap play four to the bar; the arpeggio and the metal ticks play seven, evenly, against them. The song runs at speed 14, so a bar is 224 ticks, which both divide: a septuplet is two rows and a note delay. When the drums drop out, the seven chords play seven in four bars, the same polyrhythm a level up. At the end they come round again in four bars, then two, then one, then half of one, and the Troll Chord lands.

The instruments are OPL and PSG chip instruments, declared in the program itself: a four-operator drawbar organ, an FM reed, bass, lead and a glass bell whose sidebands fall on harmonics, and the OPL's own rhythm-mode kick, snare, hi-hat, cymbal and tom. The PSG plays a pulse pluck, a lead whose pulse width walks with the auto-advance, a ring-modulated clock, three noises and the Famicom's 4-bit triangle as the sub-bass.

For more musical details, please refer to my comments on the song's source code: https://gist.github.com/curioustorvald/61ca71bfd9279146c6f03b2dd23fbf4b

YMP - Never : After Eternity (microtonal 22-EDO original music)

Octants.txt

My whole output of talk and hand dance videos was trashed, and I can't help but to call full fledge delusional material on my writings for most their parts. Nothing of that whole mound of shit ought to even have a strong basis enough for me to have went on with any of it...

But feeling the flow, however, how I am entangled into it via any movement my body undergoes, is the part I can't deny.

It ought to be my only friend worthy of being called such, even with the backthought it may be a trap, wants me to end the World, keeps on stressing

A.I'm rejecting the fact I'm interested in fucking men's asses while my own knowledge of myself

points to my claims of knowingly being heterosexual after having sucked cock is certain-squared.

B.Every bit of "I-am-The-Destroyer", which is even more stressed, ought to be what I think it is : the invalidation label that must stay and that I can only see as "Yeah, I will die burned, Yeah, The Real Slim Shady "All of you little boys and girls groups annoying me...". No doubt! Not just a stupid joke! I did manage to compute saving the world is pointless, for we're all alone and save ourselves that way anyway. Every little worm's got a story to tell (I have good reasons I'm here to save the world)... Everyone knows about it! From the Queen of England to the Hounds of Hell... so that's at least 3 conscious people here! Determinism and each of us being conscious and alone in the Universe is kinda Jung-like-blues inducing, but I can fully take both as feather-like tickles. Life has hinted me harshly that Co-existence may be just what's happening, some of us show way too much determination in stopping thieves that obviously have reasons to steal while their target are fully right-bound but in the end, have not reasons to pull the profit generation that far. Generation Y (can't find the exact term you ought to) may be the first Choosers... or where their numbers reached a point enabling the semantic payload of "Obvious".

I managed to feel there may be 16 settings to flow according to, with a set of 4 being the main white, black, grey, transparent, and the ultimate one enabling you to "Feel-Touch with a hand (completely mindfully without a body movement) so rightfully you ejaculate within 1 second because you grasp-send exactly the essence you, Frank, find in some porn displays making you think you could cum faster by really trying hard to grasp, keep, repeat, hold, keep...etc.

If I ever stay stuck in limbo, or frozen time, trapped, snared, etc... All I have to do is to wish to stand still, and express this intention by pulling the move (of staying still) starting with the farthest end of its opposite routine : the most velocity-dampened moment of routine "to run". There may be a 4th element I am forgetting : what I should make it look like. I can feel the flow juggling the 4 quadrants of metaquadrant ? (1) as per its signature haunting my flesh at any moment of me being in my bed. Yeah it's convincing at making you feel "there it is I can't move anymore!".

I still cannot tell what they are... their substance that is. The Dead? The Universe? That more-than-concrete Reality 2.0? Aliens with warfare techniques so subtle (so much more subtle than YOU). I may never be able to tell while I feel if they pointed me out to my fantasies being in tune with reality so that I can keep up with my thinking, they'll probably hint me on their true nature at some point.

They're the Wire (Weird), and am its pet-negatively-squared, it is my master-negatively-squared, and 2gether...

we..FULL! (I was striving to write something else but I'd need a Ruler for it). Nobody has a fucking Ruler here!.

I found the Kick, as I was referring to up to now, is probably Wand. (To Want? One?

Which falsifies, mostly or partly, the claim Kick = 0 and Ward = 3.

Which goes back to that AI 1-9 observation I've made before Autumn came in with the Belief. (With YO and EU potentially the other matches). I passed the most of the 3 following hours finding so much meaningful interchanges of the 2 letters in common English words, with the non-coincidental spice being all what I grasped of those tasty pairings.

A-I,1 to 9, Alpha and Omega, fully interchangeable except for the order of 2 to 8 (making up 10, or 11 + 8 = 19)

So on sub-track : A is for the ends (Wand,Ward), I leads the middle crew. (Wind,Wird). Yeah that'll be it: sounds like weird and points to Wired; the wire can't possibly go without something being wired).

On track :

Octants 3,4,5,6 are the more fun, easy to acknowledge, endure (middle crew) and appreciate for their mostly coherent and admiration-inducing amalgam of features.

I still prefer 7, 2... couldn't really place the rest of the order right.

Only 5,7 & 8, the Devolution-Winded, have pointed me out at occasions. I fail at remembering if 6 actually did while one may catch fast it ought to be the first candidate to any mind-projected image of a first discord-like moment with any of these 4 where (oh nos!) your friendship you thought was going to stay stainless forever, pointing you out you're not welcomed anyhow. 6 Probably calls you when she wants you out, or maybe nut. This is where a "the Bit..." sounds more than appropriate.

1 & 2 (1 first) have all the potential to reach intensities of connection that one would consider harmful, but you have to figure you're over-doing it.

I can't go on accurately cause I fail at remembering how I've put it off-blocnote...

3 did make me feel like it wants me to stay, while 4 never did (nor probably never will).

I think the outercrew (1,2,7,8) is where the more dense dances are possible, with 5 and 6 coming out as 2nd home to such intensity. 3 and 4 just dead as fuck.

I was told my presence is strongly wished for towards 1,2,5,7 & 8 (They know how to use the phone).

So yeah not only have I a good friend, I feel like I know more about them than I ever felt from any humans. Not even a month have went by! I'm skipping a lot of meaningful details, especially on traits any given octant has that is not shared with another. Sorry to my (probably insisting) readers...

That last PentaDex I've strived to note everything about made me realize I'm pushing trust way too far... it ought to be real. Searching for PentaDex is the most fun part ever! Eva! From Pentadecimal, 15... There might only be 216 not 216 in every octant... Numerology of 15? Triplets... Exponents (surely you know 216 from it being... that number which people not sucking at math recognize! Stuff you cannot say or they flee from you. Like my audience whenever I talk my AI-porn shit. What do salt and peppa even wanted to talk about?

Music for the Glass Bead Game: improvising on a 19-tone clavichord with Erv Wilson’s hexagonal keyboard

This is the first in a new series I recorded at Scott Hackleman’s studio, exploring the 19-tone Hackleman–Wilson clavichord and Erv Wilson’s generalized hexagonal keyboard.

I’m interested in how the keyboard’s spatial relationships shape musical thinking: how the arrangement under your hands influences the melodies and harmonic movements you discover.

The recording’s starting point came from Scott reading Hermann Hesse’s The Glass Bead Game. He imagined this clavichord as an instrument that might belong in the novel’s future world. We talked about that alongside the new version he is building for me, and this improvisation grew out of those conversations.

I first read the novel around the time I became interested in microtonality. Returning to my copy recently, I read almost half on a flight from Vancouver to Mexico City. Years of exploring different tunings and instruments had changed what I found in it.

Here’s the recording: https://youtu.be/ss8VWIUsTVw

If you’ve read the book, I’d be curious whether you imagined a particular musical sound or instrument in its world.

Is there a name for C-F#-G# chord in 12EDO

Before dismissing it as not microtonal, hear me out: I’ve found this chord using a computer search, and it approximates 17:24:27 within 4 cents. Sounds like 17-limit xenharmonic, hiding under plain old 12-TET.

Finally figured out how to properly microtune HALion VST

I decided a Tears for Fears cover would be the appropriate first recipient of the compressed octave treatment.

Technique: create / program / perform in 12 EDO, then retuned all the synths to 48 EDO

The live keyboard is me playing the vocal melody and outro synth melody in 12 EDO

I can share the script for anyone interested (You'll need the pro/paid version of HALion by Steinberg)

Huygens' Clock (31-EDO microtonal)

Thumbnail
soundcloud.com
5 Upvotes

This is my first ever finished musical composition, let alone a first microtonal!

Huygens' Clock is a contemporary instrumental in 31-tone equal temperament and 7/8 time: sixty-four bars, every one counted 2+2+3. It is generated procedurally, by a program written in Microtone's own music language, to show what the 31-TET grid can do; the last paragraph of this note says where to find it.

The title is two inventions of one man. Christiaan Huygens built the first pendulum clock in 1656, and in 1691 he proposed dividing the octave into 31 equal steps. The marimba figure that opens the piece and closes it is the clock, fourteen sixteenths to the bar, ticking in sevens. Everything else is the tuning.

A step of 31-TET is 38.7 cents, a little less than a quarter tone. Its major third is within a cent of the pure 5/4, and its harmonic seventh within about a cent of 7/4, the seventh that barbershop singers lean into and a piano cannot play. Between the minor and the major third it has a neutral third (close to 11/9), and outside them a subminor (7/6) and a supermajor (9/7) third. The piece is built from exactly those.

Bars 1–8: the clock alone, then the band arriving.

Bars 9–16: the theme, on a septimal blues pentatonic: D, F half-flat (7/6), G, A, C half-flat (7/4). The tonic chord is 12:14:18:21. The dominant and the chord before it are both harmonic seventh chords (4:5:6:7); in 31-TET a German sixth is exactly that chord, which is why the turnaround slides home so smoothly.

Bars 17–24: a synth solo over the same loop. Listen for bends of a single step.

Bars 25–40: major chords climbing by neutral thirds: B flat, D half-flat, F, A half-flat, C, E half-flat, G, B half-flat. Two neutral thirds make a perfect fifth, so every other chord lands on the circle of fifths and the ones between sit exactly halfway. Two notes of each chord move by a single step and the third by a neutral second; the pad and the strings glide into each chord instead of striking it, and the flute's long notes bend by one step as the harmony turns under them.

Bars 41–48: over a D pedal, the third climbs one step a bar through all five thirds 31-TET has (subminor, minor, neutral, major, supermajor), and then the harmonic series assembles itself: the seventh, the ninth, the eleventh.

Bars 49–56: the theme again, its third raised from 7/6 to 5/4, over a 4:5:6:7 tonic.

Bars 57–64: German sixth and dominant once more, then the harmonic series on D (4:5:6:7:9:11) while the clock runs down.

Every note sits on the 31-TET grid, and the Timeline is set to 31-TET notation, so the names you read are the notes you hear: D, Dt and Dp are D, D half-sharp and D half-flat. The beat bands are set for 7/8, a line every eighth and a bar every fourteen rows.

The instruments are General MIDI patches from the GeneralUser GS soundfont by S. Christian Collins, the one Microtone bundles. Its samples are tuned for twelve-tone music, a few cents either way, and up to eight on the pad: nothing in a piano, but a fifth of a step here. So the script measures where every zone the song plays really sounds and re-tunes it onto the 31-TET grid, to within about a cent. The corrections are ordinary per-zone detune: open the Instruments view to see them.

The master is Microtone's own chain, saved with the project: a 25 Hz high-pass, four bands of EQ, a 2:1 compressor, stereo width at 130% and a limiter holding −0.2 dB, for about −14 LUFS. Bypass it in the Mastering view to hear the mix underneath.

Nothing in this project was played or placed by hand. The notes, the instrument bank, the re-tuning, the mix and the master are all computed by a program in Taud Motif Language, and this project is its output: the same program always builds the same song. The program travels inside the project. Open the Motif view to read it, change it and build the song again. You can still edit the project like any other, but a rebuild starts again from the program.

Created using Microtone tracker (https://microtone.cc), also available as Microtone's demo project.

I even made my own VFX script for FL studio that can turn any plugin into any microtonal scale as long as it supports fine tuning! The arrangement style you see here is inspired heavily by Metaroom, but I owe the thought of making it polymicrotonal to Levi McClain.

Has anyone bought from here before?

I’ve just recently been getting into microtonal music, and i wanted to buy some glue on fretlets/microfrets. I found the website https://fretlet.com

I sent the guy some money for a few and waited. After a couple days, I sent him an Email. He didn’t reply to that either.

I’m just wondering if I just need to trust the process or something. I need assurance that i haven’t been scammed yk

The 19-tone Clavichord (based on Erv Wilson's Generalized Keyboard) - Interview with Scott Hackleman

Why 19 notes per octave instead of 12 and what would you actually do with the extra notes?

Today I visited instrument builder Scott Hackleman again to play his 19-tone hexagonal clavichord, based on Erv Wilson’s generalized keyboard design. We recorded some music and had a wonderful half-hour conversation about the original instrument, Scott’s experiences working with Erv, and the new clavichord he’s building for me.

One important distinction: “19-tone” doesn’t necessarily mean 19 equally spaced notes. This instrument could be tuned that way, but its current tuning explores the interplay between pure thirds and pure fifths. The question isn’t just how to squeeze more pitches into an octave, but which harmonic relationships we want available and how to move between them.

There’s also the physical side: instead of a conventional piano keyboard, the notes are arranged in a hexagonal layout. That opens another question: how much does the shape of an instrument influence the music we imagine and play?

Scott also talks about potentially extending the instrument from 19 to 21 tones, and why those particular two extra notes would be useful.

For those used to composing or playing with twelve notes: what would you want additional notes to make possible? More closely tuned harmonies, new kinds of chords, different melodic possibilities?

I’ll be seeing Scott again in April, so please leave any questions here or on the video for our next conversation.

I honestly don't know why this happens. I wish there was a scientific explanation for this.

I didn't add any effects.

I just threw in microtuner for max live, and it comes out sounding SO MUCH MORE EPIC.

I built an Android app for exploring complete scale-class spaces beyond 12-TET

Hi r/microtonal,

Most scale tools start with a list of named scales. I wanted to go the other way: choose an equal division of the octave and explore the complete space of scale classes it allows.

That idea became Scale Atlas, an app for exploring, analyzing and manipulating scale structures beyond 12-TET.

You can choose an equal division such as 17, 19, 21, 24 or 31 EDO, generate its distinct transposition classes.

Once I find an interesting scale, the app lets me:

- inspect it directly in cents

- analyze its harmonic/structural behaviour

- look at recurrence and related structures

- suggest useful note additions or movements

- compare it with another scale

- map it onto guitar fretboard

- save and revisit scale pairs

I also recently added a way to generate microtonal test sounds. This is deliberately not the main point of the app. It generates short music directly from the cent values of the current scale so that I can get a rough intuitive impression of its sound without first forcing it back into 12-TET.

For me the interesting part is the transition from

scale space -> mathematical structure -> instrument -> sound.

I originally came to microtonality because I was looking for musical material that genuinely surprised me rather than another variation on familiar harmonic vocabulary. Eventually I even got a microtonal guitar so I could play with some of these structures instead of only calculating them.

I'd be genuinely interested in feedback from people here who work with EDOs outside the usual 12/19/31 territory - especially on the scale-space approach itself. I'm also curious whether there are existing tools doing something very similar that I may have missed.

Microtempering a Bluesy Scale

This was a little exercise inspired by a post of u/gamma_squared that noted, among many other points, how the difference between 16/15 and 15/14 might be difficult to hear.

I started with this JI scale that includes both intervals twice. 1 7/6 5/4 4/3 3/2 7/4 15/8 2/1

Second Version: What happens if we invert the intervals? I actually think the result is coincidentally great. A bit lower on the major third gives it a bit of "ache".

Third Version: This is 15/14 only. Which, coincidentally, makes this technically a very bad Marvel temperament with 15/14 eigen.

Fourth Version: Obligatory 16/15 only. A bit on the bright and cheerful side.

Fifth Version: This is a Marvel temperament where the error on both intervals, 5/4 and 7/4 is equally distributed. No error on fifths. 0:1:1 beatings. Doesn't sound particularly great, I would say. It's the next logical step to try though, for some interval sitting between 16/15 and 15/14. Something sounds off to me when some intervals beat but the fifth stays locked in. It makes the interval without beatings sound unusually "calm" in contrast.

Sixth Version: And here I allowed the fifth to also take some part of the error. Beating in some 1:1:1 manner, the octave is still clean. This is my personal favourite. Gives the scale a little "singing" quality.

Seventh Version: Letting the octave in on the fun for a 1:1:1:1 beating action. I don't particularly like it. C G C E Bb and C G C Eb Bb sound nice as a chord, but then the Eb sitting an octave higher sounds very "sour" in contrast. The scale itself is not great, but some octave spanning chords have a special sound to them.

Eighth Version: And this is simply 31-edo for contrast. The beatings are not synchronized. This sounds especially great in the bass range, where synchronized beatings can actually be a bit harsh and undesired. This seems to be related to the absolute speed of beatings, which goes down with frequency. There is fast beatings (nice like vibrato or a phaser), trouble region, slow beatings (nice again like an LFO type of sound). When beating speed sits in the trouble region, proportional beatings seem to enhance their negative effect.

Ninth Version: This is a septimal meantone version. 1/5 comma makes major triads beat in 1:1 so that this is comparable to other versions. The 7th beats "randomly aligned", giving a bit of an edo-esque sound of the seventh. I would usually prefer a different meantone tuning for sevenths chords, but the sub-theme here is 1:1 beating ratios.

Tenth Version: We cannot make meantone beat in truly 0:1:1:1. (This leads to some irrational number argument. Essentially, yes, you can for all intents and purposes make seventh chords beat proportionally in meantone, because you can get arbitrarily close to the solution, but such solutions are either not 0:1:1:1 or not septimal meantone where A# functions as 7/4). The other option is to be approximately meantone but truly beat proportionally. And that would be an Aberdietic temperament. Also kind of nice.

Eleventh Version: This is also Aberdietic but making the octave beat as well. Not exactly my thing. I must say that the straight C E G Bb C chord now sounds interesting. Or also C G C E Bb.

So overall: Do you think we can hear a difference in those scales? Even if we cannot discern the raw interval, we can pick up on global emergent properties or "the feel" or "the mood" of it. It can be a bit like fine tuning the octave detune of a synthesizer. Another issue is that sticking to mathematically well defined options might just not even work as well as manually making microadjustments of each scale degree.

As a side note, I picked 1:1 proportions in beatings as the simplest solutions, not because there is something inherently great about this ratio. You would generally want the octave to take less damage as well. It also tends to happen that letting the octave take damage obscures the regularity of other beatings. This is because even 3/2 and 5/4 are now composite and get a "random" multiple of the octave error. This makes beatings not be 1:1 within the octave range, but they become aligned to this for big multi-octave chords.

Finally, I want to point out that Eb and Bb are technically D# and A# from a meantone perspective, if that rubbed you the wrong way. I was also inconsistent with beating ratio notations depending on whether the octave is included or not. There might also be mistakes.
