Education/Career Where can I learn about meteorology?

Title. Ideally for free. Currently in university, studying maths and CS, for reference.

I'm not looking to get into the meteorology field, but I'm just naturally interested in being able to interpret graphs/figures and understand various phenomena and such. For example: understanding why Europe is much warmer than Canada despite being further up north, understanding surface pressure charts, understanding meteorological phenomena like El niño etc.

Updated rules: Unsolicited promotion of weather-related apps, websites, software tools or services is not allowed. If you have developed a tool that you believe would be useful to the community, please contact the moderators before posting.

Hi all, new rule as now seen in the sidebar/title. Apologies for the slow roll out. Please report immediately any infringements.

Unsolicited promotion of weather-related apps, websites, software tools or services is not allowed. If you have developed a tool that you believe would be useful to the community, please contact the moderators before posting.

I haven't explicitly mentioned AI slop here - for good reason. AI is used a lot in meteorological research at the moment, some of it good, some not so good. A blanket ban seems unreasonable, but the above rule seems to cover most of the issues we are having in the subreddit.

Upcoming: The moderators will maintain a pinned or recurring thread for community-recommended apps and software (AI or not).

Advice/Questions/Self Could someone explain to me how this cloud could have formed?

Snapped this pic on the train, I thought it was a scud cloud, but I read those form near storm systems, and apart from this small cloud cover, the sky was clear. I dont know much about meteorology though, so I'd love to have explained to me how this cloud came to be. Last pic is around 15mins later at home, where it seemed to be dissipating.

Advice/Questions/Self What causes the clouds to look like this

Hi everyone, I live on the island of Rhodes, Greece, and we had a tornado a couple of days ago. Today the sky is full of these weird cloud formations and I’m wondering what causes them, as they keep appearing.
I don’t know much about clouds or weather, but this does look weird to me, as I’ve never noticed anything like this before, especially after the recent weather.
Does anyone know what could be causing this? Is it a normal cloud formation or could it be related to the recent weather?

It's a 3D world simulation I built with the same dynamics as Earth, and I factor in probabilities like aerodynamics, cause and effect, climate, weather, and other stuff, and then I create natural disasters, weather, and other events and test those events on my population

I've simulated hurricanes, cyclones, thunderstorms, tornadoes, volcanoes, tsunamis, earthquakes, etc

Let me know if you want to be part of the simulation, my Discord is sebwithaura .

Advice/Questions/Self Question for the broadcast meteorologists

Hey guys, not a meteorologists here but big fan of the weather. At work I've been tasked with making an image that will have go go into one of our weather peoples Max systems for use during our lifestyle show broadcast. I'd like to try and make it animated, which likely means a video file. I asked one of our meteorologists what video files work with the system and he wasn't sure and said we'd have to go with trial and error. Would any of you guys happen to know what video files would work with the Max system?

[OC] The D-Day Surf Report

Hi! I am a physical oceanographer specializing in ocean waves. I'm interested in telling stories from the history of wave science. This is my first attempt putting together a video, in it I tell the story of Walter Munk and the development of surf forecasting for the D-Day landings. As I say in the intro, I was inspired by talk from science advisors to the recent movie "Pressure". In it, they detail how the weather influenced the D-Day landings, but I didn't hear a lot about the waves, which I felt deserved more attention. Of course, the wind is what drives the ocean waves, so these things are coupled. Anyway, I hope you find it interesting.

Article/Publications October long-range data is in, and I combined six seasonal weather models into one snowfall forecast for winter 2026/2027. Data reveals a clear Super El Niño pattern: more snow for the Southern and Central U.S., but less snow in the North, southern Canada, and most of Europe

I make seasonal snowfall maps from the long-range models each month, and with the data from October predictions now available, it shows that all six main models now agree on a strong Super El Niño snow pattern this winter.

In the United States, more snow is expected from California and the Southwest into the Southern Plains and the South, while the Pacific Northwest, the Northern Rockies, the Great Lakes, and New England show a below-normal snow signal. But when plotting the change from September to October data, the Northeast showed the biggest improvement in total snowfall forecast. Timing-wise, December looks slow, with most of the snow coming in January and February.

A below-normal snowfall season is also predicted by all six models across southern Canada and most of Europe.

In the article, I present the full set of maps, including the visual change from the previous month's snow forecast, the snow spatial distribution, the forecast for ski areas, and a Snowfall Explorer where you can check the snow forecast for your own state, province, or country.

Advice/Questions/Self what can I expect?

hi! after high school, i’m planning to go to college to study meteorology and weather, and i’d love to hear from people who have experience in this field! i’ve always been fascinated by weather, especially tornadoes and severe storms. i’m even considering getting into storm chasing in my free time someday! i also want to understand what career opportunities are available, what i should expect from college, and what working in meteorology is actually like. i want to turn something i’m genuinely passionate about into a career that can provide a stable future for me.

i’d love to hear about different career paths, college experiences, advice for someone just starting out, and anything you wish you’d known before getting into this field!

any advice, personal experiences, or recommendations will be greatly appreciated!! <33
