Gear Question Metal Detector Guide

Hello and welcome to r/metaldetecting ! If you're looking for advice on your first detector, gear or an upgrade, you've come to the right post. We've put together a simple guide to help with choosing your detector and other tools.

As a member of our sub, you are more than welcome to try out our special code "REDDITMD2026" at checkout on Kellycodetectors.com (US)

GENERAL METAL DETECTOR Recommendations

$0-200: We do not recommend getting a new detector under $200. Detecting has a cost of entry, and quality significantly drops off under the $200 mark. Save up a bit more, or try finding a used machine of quality listed in the next price range. All that said, if you are determined to buy a machine in this price range, the Minelab Go-Find, Nokta First Swing or a Quest machine aren't bad choices.

$200-$400: The Minelab Vanquish 340 and 440, the Nokta Simplex line and the Minelab X-Terra Pro are the three best machines in this price range, by far.

$400-$500: Nokta Score and Double Score, Minelab Vanquish 540

$500-$1,200: Nokta Legend or the Minelab Equinox series

$1,200+: XP Deus 2 or the Minelab Manticore.

SCUBA/SNORKELING DETECTORS

Nokta Pulsedive is great for snorkeling. The Minelab Excalibur 2 and XP Deus 2 are excellent diving detectors.

CHILDREN'S DETECTORS

Nokta Mini Hoard or Midi Hoard

PINPOINTERS

Garrett AT pro pointer, Nokta AccuPoint, or XP MI-4. The XP MI-6 if you have an XP detector.

SHOVELS AND TROWELS

Dune, King of Spades, Grave Digger, Motley, Lesche, Predator Tools

SAND SCOOPS

Motley, Dune, Sito, RTG, King of Spades, and Detecting Adventures all make great scoops for beach detecting.

Show & Tell Class ring returned, with a crazy coinsidence

Found a class ring late September, and it had some initials, was a 1976 Adelphi college class ring (local college). I searched it up and that college had a 50th reunion in a few week, which gave me chills. Knew I had to find the owner. I messaged a few people on Facebook who graduated that year with no response, then I sent an email to the school, a girl helped me find the owner, who unfortunately passed. But she got in touch with the widow who is very happy to get the ring back. Thought I would share! Here’s the article they put out the other day

Coincidence ** new to Reddit and I don’t know how to fix it, sorry for the typo….

Just bought a metal detector and this was my first time taking it out ever, and I pulled a ring within the fist 10 min that has “N A” on the face. Maybe Narcotics Anonymous? It has “P 10k” stamped on it too. Do you think this means 10k plumb or maybe plated? I’m hooked now!

Interesting finds today. Fair amount of coins with one copper memorial. Thingys were very interesting with a hugh ring, the frame of a 1967 Hot Wheels custom Mustang. And a very ornate something that was different at every angle. Not shown (because I don't want to get kicked off FB) was not PG or even PG14. If you have seen the movie There's Something About Mary, let's just say that it was or might be an earring of frank and beans. What a surprise. Have a great weekend and happy hunting.

We found an ancient settlement. The most interesting find was a fragment of a Kufic dirham. A coin from the Arab Caliphate. And also a Finno‑Ugric pendant.

ID Request Some of the last finds

These are some of the best finds i did in the last weeks.

Some religious votive , a lead bell and a copper crotal bell, a small button that i assume is from the Vendée region, or at least using that "style", and what appears to be an anular fibula. Addiotionaly a lead seal with flowers or tree branches on it and a lead fishing sinker.

I also found what appears to be the structure of a copper pocket watch

The best find was a decorative flower that seems to be made of silver, though I can’t figure out what it was used for, it weighs 5.75g.

Also found some copper and bronze roman coin, but they're in terrible condition, the soil is their biggest enemy.

It was all found in plowed fields in central italy.

What do you think? (Sorry for my made up scale, it's in cm)

Gear: Minelab Xterra Elite

Foil! Grrrr. Comes up in the 4 to 9 range depending on the quality or if it was all balled up

Lots of beverage caps, to the point that I knew that it was a Corona cap even before digging.

I follow the “Hoover Boys” mantra of dig it all

The 2 zipper pulls did not register to me as aluminium (Yes it is “al you mini um” since my Gr 12 exchange chemistry teacher from NZ! Thank you Mr Taylor!)

Less beer tabs than I expected so kudos to the person who invented that!

76 cents in coin and the long hook item is copper.
My wife the librarian immediately identified it as part of a bookmark.

The charm is cubic zirconia as on the back of the clasp is “925 China CZ”

All done between the 14th Ave Pier and the Springmaid Pier (2 huge construction cranes on it)

Did I get out in the surf? No. Did not trust myself. Need to find a way to tie up the detector on my right side and my shovel on the left

My dad found this on a friend’s ranch in Oregon, apparently Eagle Point/ Butte Falls area.

I’ve seen a similar part on table saws, but that’s pretty inconclusive. The lettering looks to me like it was patented March 7, 1889 or 1899, though I don’t know enough about the history of tools and machinery for that to help me much. Any insight is appreciated!
