Does Malta need what happened in France for our politicians to wake up?

I think that in our lifetime, we are going to witness what happened in France these past two days in our country. It is impossible to keep living in this crisis where one constantly feels like they are in survival. WHEN ARE THE POLITICIANS GOING TO WAKE UP and DO THEIR JOB? Protect the people and not the rich?

Justice system gearing up for another Acquittal By Jury!

Let's see how well the Maltese juror system handles a Maltese man accused of murdering an immigrant.

How many of the selected Jurors do you think will be found to have posted negatively about immigrants on their social media once the trial is over, given what we saw in the Daphne trial, and given what we know about Maltese social media habits? All of them?

I went down a rabbit hole trying to understand Malta’s job market

I’ve often seen people saying that TCNs are taking jobs away from Maltese workers. One day I got curious: how many jobs have actually been taken away?
So I started looking into it. One question led to another.

1. More foreign workers, but low unemployment?
Over the past decade, Malta’s foreign workforce has grown dramatically. Yet total employment has also increased, while official unemployment remains relatively low.
But how many Maltese workers have actually been displaced? And how many foreign workers are filling new positions or genuine labour shortages?
I couldn’t find reliable figures that directly answer this.

2. Official statistics vs. everyday reality
This part interests me even more.
Low unemployment doesn’t necessarily mean people can find decent jobs. Some are underemployed, some struggle to find work matching their qualifications, and others have jobs but can barely cover their living expenses.
Not everyone registers with Jobsplus either, although official unemployment estimates aren’t based solely on those registrations.
How much of people’s actual struggle is missing from the headline employment figures?

3. The surprising education question
Here’s something I didn’t expect.
According to 2024 figures, around 48% of highly educated TCN workers in Malta were employed in jobs that didn’t require tertiary qualifications.
I’ve also seen claims that even ordinary vacancies attract applicants with master’s degrees or higher. I couldn’t find reliable figures showing how widespread that is.
So where are all these highly qualified applicants coming from? Local graduates, foreign graduates, or people arriving with overseas qualifications?
And does Malta lack jobs, or jobs that match people’s skills and salary expectations?

4. What about wages and policy?
Even if local workers aren’t losing their jobs, increased labour supply could still affect wages and bargaining power.
But how much comes from labour competition, employers’ hiring practices, or government policies?
And without foreign workers, would employers actually raise wages and hire locally, or would some simply reduce operations?

A foreign worker getting a job doesn’t automatically mean a Maltese worker lost one. But a Maltese worker having a job doesn’t mean they haven’t been affected either.

Where I ended up
I started with one question about TCNs taking jobs and ended up reading about unemployment, wages, underemployment, skills mismatches and education.
I still don’t know how much each factor contributes, or how big the gap is between official employment statistics and people’s experiences.

I’m not doing formal research, just following my curiosity.

I’d be interested to hear what people working or hiring in Malta have actually experienced, especially if it challenges any of these assumptions.
Sometimes a simple question turns out to be anything but simple.

Additional point 1: TCN doesn’t automatically mean low-skilled, low-educated or low-paid. People from the UK, US, Canada and Australia are TCNs too, not to mention Mexico, Colombia and many other countries.
Nationality doesn’t define someone’s abilities, and where people end up living isn’t necessarily a reflection of their talent.

Additional point 2: I think TCNs can be broadly divided into two groups in Malta’s labour market: higher-paid skilled professionals and lower-paid workers. Their impact on Malta’s economy, wages and cost of living can be quite different. We shouldn’t treat all TCNs as one homogeneous group.

Additional point 3: Public-sector employment
Some commenters mentioned that government employment has expanded, providing stable jobs for locals.
Could this also contribute to labour shortages in the private sector, increasing reliance on TCNs?
Perhaps public-sector employment is another factor worth considering when discussing Malta’s labour market, rather than simply assuming TCNs are taking jobs away from locals.

Considering moving to Malta .

Hi everyone !

I'm a young man who wants to start over. I've been looking for a place to move to for some time, and everything points to Malta being a good place for me. I have heard opinions about this country as tolerant, with a good quality of life, and I would like to verify them. I am currently still studying, but I would like to move as soon as possible after school.

If you live there , please answer:

- How much money (approximately) do I need to start?

- What are the people like there?

- Is it expensive to live there?

- Is it difficult to find a job?

- What does healthcare look like?

I'd appreciate any advice or information you can share. Please share as much as you can to help me make this important decision!
