CALLING ALL WEIRDOS: I Spiraled and Made A Master List of 150+ LA Social Spaces for Neurodivergents, Artists, and Outsiders

Like all good procrastination projects, this one spiraled out of control and somehow became a pretty useful tool. One I desperately wish I’d had when I moved here 9 months ago, when I was completely socially stranded with no idea where to start, let alone what places might actually be a fit for me, and overwhelmed by the social pressures of mainstream culture in LA. So naturally, I did what any socially anxious, neurodivergent person would do:

I followed every club, collective, and mutual aid crew I could find on Instagram... and then fed them, one by one, into ChatGPT to help me build a master list... instead of, you know, actually going to any of them.

What came out of it is a beautiful, collapsible spreadsheet of 150+ genuinely cool, active, and slightly underground LA community spaces. Things like: queer discos, radical book clubs, art studios, mutual aid groups, film screenings, sewing circles, game nights, hikes, and more. It’s focused mostly in and around the Eastside (for now) and includes tags for types of engagement and audience/vibe so you can actually find what fits. Important note: this does not include every club in LA, and it’s not trying to.

It’s curated for a specific vibe I was craving: I wanted stuff that was neurodivergent-friendly, queer-rooted, BIPOC-centered, earnest, leftist, offbeat, status-unbothered. Stuff that felt alive. Main categories include:

  • Arts, Music & Creative Classes
  • Mutual Aid & Volunteering
  • Outdoor & Wellness Communities
  • Literary & Book Clubs
  • Political & Social Justice Orgs
  • Game Nights & Supper Clubs
  • LGBTQ+ & Identity-Based Orgs
  • Event Boards & Bulletins

Yes, it’s disproportionately light on workout clubs (sorry not sorry) and heavy on film, books, mutual aid, and weird creative stuff. That's just what I'm into okay!

But I’m totally open to suggestions if you know a group that belongs here or spot something I should edit.

🗂️ Here it is!

Please drop a comment if you have thoughts, questions, or recs of things to add. And let us know if you've actually been to one of these groups and had an especially good or bad experience! The more info that's in one spot, the better!

And if it’d be helpful, I’m thinking about launching a newsletter to highlight upcoming events + report back on ones I go to. Let me know if that’d be useful to you. I know this is a little unhinged. But it was made with love, maladaptive coping, and a real desire to feel connected.

Hope it helps someone else find community and feel a little less alone!

(Edit): Per someone's suggestion, I also just made an insta! Ppl can follow me at The Field List for weekly round-ups of events :)

Newbie to Los Feliz

Hi all! I have just relocated from New York to Los Feliz and am absolutely loving it here. While I have been exploring quite a bit, I’d love to know if anyone had local favorites around here whether it be food, specialty stores (I think I saw a knitting spot 👀), or any other hidden gems they know about and want to share! Or any other helpful neighborhood info!

Also, any idea of where to go hang by myself at night that’s fun and isn’t strange for a woman to hit up alone? I recently had dinner solo at the bar at All Time and made 3 new friends so I feel like I’m on a good roll 🤣

Also if there’s any other women in the area who would like to be my friend, 👋 🙂

Thank you 😊

Looking for Griffith Observatory Expert

Hey! I'm a student at Cal State LA, currently in my last semester, and my group is making a short documentary for one of our production classes. The film follows two friends of mine who are dating, as one experiences Griffith Observatory for the first time while the other shares her lifelong love of the Observatory and the experiences she's had there with him.

We're looking for someone with deep knowledge of the Observatory, its history, and its exhibits who would be willing to go on record answering questions that could be used as narration in the documentary. We're open to either a full filmed sit down interview or just an audio recording.

If you're interested in discussing this further, please reach out to me here, and I'll be happy to provide my student email!

Knit Happens at Barnsdall

Hi everyone! I’m hosting a casual crafting meet up in Barnsdall on Saturday November 7th from 2-4pm!
This is just a chance for fellow crafters to get together and bond over the love of the craft. Just bring your current project, something to sit on, and anything else you need for a great day in the park. This is very lowkey and hopefully will become a reoccurring thing for the crafters of Los Feliz!

Looking for any potential witnesses or camera footage of a parked car being hit and completely trashed at some point between 9pm Sunday, Oct 19 and Monday afternoon on Price Street (4300 block). It was a white Mazda 3 (4 door). Who fucking does that? The car is most likely totaled… Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Used to see him walking down Vermont to House of Pies often, he was a Los Feliz fixture, it was like he was a good luck charm if I saw him that day. RIP to Los Feliz’s own Richard Riehle!

Riverside Courts Tennis Reservations

I’ve made reservations and played at the Riverside Courts a few times now, and each time I’m there, there are usually at least a couple other open courts. There will also be players sometimes on the court I reserved, which is totally fine, they’ve always been accommodating whenever we have a res.

So I’m just curious, do you really need a res to play there? It seems like you can show up and hope there’s at least one empty court, and usually - I play at pretty regular times - there are at least a couple open. It feels like there’s a mismatch between the available times on the reservation page (very limited and hard to get day of) versus how busy it actually gets.

End of a Los Feliz era.

Since before I even lived in LA, I visited for craft cocktails and oysters and little fire-lit patio tables.

The first time I ever came here, I told the server I wasn’t sure what I wanted yet, and they asked, “What do you normally drink?” I replied, “I usually just drink Fernet neat.” With a nod they were gone, and when they returned they brought a cute little cocktail in a gin martini glass and presented it with a flourish: “The bartender calls this: Fernetting Sarah Marshall.”

Yeah, it was delicious. But the real coup was just that someone was creative in service of us having a good time, and that creativity made such a fun connection.

I had the best time with my LA friends that night in 2015, never anticipating I would one day live in LA myself, directly across the street, with a balcony that allowed me to enjoy the din of that Saturday night, every night.

I’ve loved living across the street for the last 8 years, have enjoyed greeting each day with the scent of mesquite smoke, cedar smoke, hickory smoke, whatever. I’ve relished the nostalgic smoked meat smells, like a 4th of July pool party BBQ every day—even though I rarely cook and eat meat at home myself.

I can only hope that whatever takes your place is as friendly and as lively as the vibe you brought to this block.

Godspeed in your next endeavors, all.

eastside / Hollywood tuxedo rental - mom & pop place?

Does anyone have any recommendations for a mom & pop tuxedo rental place on the eastside / Glendale / Hollywood / Burbank side of things? Have not been impressed with Mens Wearhouse quality. Is The Black Tux @ Nordstroms at the Galleria the only game in town?

Porch Pirate Caught on Camera

So DoorDash lived up to its usual 30% success rate when a delivery guy ignored all instructions and just left my food on the building’s intercom like a tasty beacon.

A passing sleazebag walking his dog took the opportunity to steal it within minutes (footage from my building’s security camera).

I, in slippers, found the guy on Normandie smoking a cigarette, my food resting next to him. I took it back, called him a “f—-king thief,” and told him he’s lucky I don’t call the cops.

If you see this guy, be advised. I feel bad for his dog.

EDIT: Is Reddit just a contest now to see who can leave the most off-topic comment based on an incidental detail in the post?

I wanted you to be aware there’s a thief walking around. Maybe he’s harmless, and maybe he’s not. Just trying to make y’all aware for safety reasons. I really don’t need advice on how to live. And I notably didn’t call the police over this.

Oh, and if you’re pro-stealing shit, you’re a troll and no one in your life actually likes you.

Question for any Lazy Acres employees

How expensive is you all's health insurance?

Just curious as to how much it costs per check since I know someone who works at one and they tell me the insurance is super expensive for just themselves, but every job I've ever had has been like, $50/check max (this is bi-weekly).

No Kings Event is happening in Los Feliz! (This Saturday 11am - 2pm)

I asked in an earlier post if a neighborhood branch of this nationwide peaceful protest (and get out the vote effort) was happening, and @Ok_Agent6016 spotted the listing and generously passed along the info.

https://www.mobilize.us/nokings/event/1055702/

From the site:

About this event

NO KINGS! Vermont and Hollywood Blvd, 11-2pm Saturday October 17.

Bring friends. Bring signs. Bring noisemakers. LET'S GET LOUD.

We decide who represents us. We decide what comes next.

For more than a year, millions of people have come together to reject the idea that power belongs to kings, billionaires, or politicians who believe they are above the people and the law.

Now, we are taking the next step, turning people power into voter power. Unlike previous No Kings actions, No Kings: Vote Early, is not purely a protest. Instead, on October 17th, it's a day of nonpartisan voter participation: we are bringing our community together to make a plan to vote early and ensuring every eligible voter understands their options for how to vote and has the opportunity to make their voice heard.

Because no one person gets to decide our leaders before voters do. On October 17th, join us in local events across the country as we get out the early vote and say it loud: no thrones, no crowns, no kings.

No Kings: Vote Early events are nonpartisan and are designed to increase participation from all eligible voters.

A core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events.

Hi Los Feliz heads! I wanted to share that we’re doing a very special show tomorrow in the patio of Fred 62 featuring Vanessa Gonzalez, who has a comedy special that just came out on Hulu that is the funniest I’ve seen in awhile. The show is a really good hang, we’re just trying to build community and offer a fun event to the community. Please pop in if you can. Wednesday at 7:30.
