Announcement Enough is enough. Addressing the rampant misogyny in this community.

3.5k Upvotes

Hello r/longhair,

We don’t often need to address the meta, but this is one of those times. This likely won’t be a popular discussion, but it’s necessary.

As someone with long hair, who has experienced botched cuts, and as a retired stylist specializing in long hair, I understand the frustration of a bad haircut or losing more length than intended. However, the growing hostility toward hairstylists, especially female stylists, is becoming a real concern.

Lately, we’ve seen (and removed) an increasing number of comments referring to female hairstylists as catty, jealous, bitches, or otherwise feeding into the tired narrative that women are out to get each other. No one makes these accusations against male stylists. These comments are rooted in misogyny, plain and simple. If you’re making those comments, stop. This subreddit will not be a place for people to air their resentment toward women under the guise of complaining about haircuts. That is not a culture we will be fostering. If that’s a problem, leave.

This has escalated beyond just insults. This week alone, a user advocated for hairstylists to be stabbed until they "get the message," and another said they’d punch their stylist in the face. The fact that we now need to put automated safeguards in place to catch violent threats in a hair community is beyond ridiculous. There is no justifying this level of vitriol. It’s hair. People feeling entitled to rage over haircuts is one thing, but taking it to the point of threats and violence is completely unhinged. Both users have been banned, and authorities have been contacted regarding the threats.

This isn’t just about direct threats. Many hairstylists in this community have said they no longer feel safe participating because of the level of hostility here. That should never happen. This subreddit should not be a place where professionals are afraid to share their expertise because they might be met with harassment, abuse, or outright threats of violence.

So, this is the line. We are enacting a zero-tolerance policy for misogyny, harassment, threats, review bombing, doxxing, or any attempt to turn this subreddit into a mob. This applies to hairstylists, community members, and anyone else. If you can’t participate without being aggressive, hateful, or outright dangerous, you’re gone. No warnings. No exceptions.

If that upsets you, go somewhere else. This ends now.

Hair Fetishist Warning Post - Share Your Experiences!

Hi everyone! There are a lot of fetishists who prey on our users in this sub, especially in DM's. We do ban them but it doesn't stop the DM's. My intent here is to have a post where our members can share their experiences to warn others. We'll sticky this post as well as a reference.

Tell us what nasty tricks they tried, what lies they told, or whatever else you want. Just vent if you feel like it.

No defending fetishists - you'll be banned. Really. Don't test us.

Assume that any DM's you get about hair are likely fetishists and ask why they can't just comment in the sub if they have genuine advice.

Let's call them out here.

To my hips!!! Finally!!! Only took 5 years!

My strategy: honestly… nothing. I wash it every day and sleep with it down. I use a hair mask every wash and use leave in oil and blow dry it like once a week.

Hang in there! You will get where you are going.

Just for reference before routine, as the title mentions I'm a male. Hair routine: Shampoo and condition daily and avoid heat styling. Air dry when possible, blow dry on low. Scalp serum overnight each night. Since I keep my hair around the same length always, I give myself very minor trims of my ends (an inch or two) every 3-6 months. (Note, I don't recommend trims anywhere close to this often when you're still growing for length.) Vitamin routine. Balanced diet and exercise.

Help wanted Growing my hair out for my wedding!

Post image

I have fine, wavy hair that is prone to frizz and tangling. I get oily roots within 24 hours but my ends are perpetually dry. This picture shows the length I always get to before it gets unmanageable and I feel like I have no other option than to get a 2-3 inch trim (which sometimes turns into 4-5 inches depending on the hairdresser). I got my last haircut in February and since then I have avoided heat styling, used leave in conditioner after every shower, and kept it split-end free using the search and destroy method.

This time I’m determined to keep it growing out because I just got engaged (yay!) and really want long princess hair for my wedding in a year. Although I’ve always lusted after long hair for myself, I am a newbie when it comes to actual committed hair growth, so I am looking for any and all of your tips, oh wise ones of [r/longhair](r/longhair). Please help me achieve my wedding dream hair!

Finally feels like my hair is actually long. (At least from the back. From the front it's still long-ish.)

Unfortunately I work in healthcare and have wavy hair, so having it down is only for special occasions.

Help wanted Would layers be worth it?

Post image
39 Upvotes

This is my hair right now, been growing it for a couple of years now ever since I fell for that wolf cut trend in 2023. I never did any drastic changes to my hair ever since, only v cut trims every now and then.

(Btw, my hair is a bit damp in the photo)

I don’t know anything about taking care of layers or if it would even be worth it. I don’t really like styling my hair, I just straighten my bangs and call it a day.

What do you guys think?

Edit: Thank you all for your advice! I will not be getting layers.

My hair used to be a very dark brown, the color at my roots is accurate except it unfortunately looks like I'm graying now. I also feel like my ends have gotten quite uneven and they always curl up / never look good. I'm not sure what to do with my hair at this point.

Edit: Thank you everyone for the advice and reassurance. I'm still unsure if I'll try to maintain red in the future or leave it as is right now, though I was very tempted to try another attempt at dying it. I'm definitely going to look into starting a curly/wavy hair routine as well. Also current shampoo and conditioner are island soap and candleworks hawaiian awapuhi. I'll likely buy a blue shampoo as recommended!

Help wanted Cut my hair, now regret it - any way to speed up regrowth?

33M. Had long hair basically my entire life. Cut my hair because of thinning and really wanted to experience change.

But once I went through with it, I immediately regretted it. I look and feel much worse.

Is there any way to speed up regrowth? I don't want to wait 4 or 5 years until it regrows to it's original length (past the shoulder blades I guess).

Hair victory Kinda proud how my hair journey is going

First photo was in 2023, second one was my big chop, and then the last one was a few days ago.

Fully virgin hair

I recently started washing almost daily because hair training just wasn't working for me. My hair feels so much better now that I wash it more frequently.

I'm atill looking for a permanent shampoo and conditioner.

I was using the oliplex hair oil but I'm looking for something cheaper that's still good quality.

It's been time for a trim for a month or two now, but I'm holding out until November. Probably going to get an inch or two off just to get rid of split ends and try to get rid of my layers.

I'm also trying to figure out how to enhance the waves without a whole lot of effort. I braid it every night which makes it wavy, but I want to wear my natural waves sometimes without having to spend hours on it. It's wavy in the photo of it being wet, but I think it's just too heavy to hold the wave.

My hair isn't that wavy, but it's enough that I notice.

Fluff Longest real hair you’ve seen on someone in real life?

Wigs or extensions don’t count!
The longest hair I’ve seen on an adult in real life was tailbone length hair. She was a blonde woman of Swedish descent.
(I also see little kids with long hair a lot, but on adults it’s more impressive).

Fluff I miss hair magazines at the salon

Getting my hair trimmed today (finally sitting on it!!). Does anyone else miss the hair fashion/style magazines of the 2000-2010’s at the salon?

I can look up a photo on my phone, but I’m nostalgic for flipping through a non-wedding hair magazine or ultra artistic book on hair while waiting to find a sample image (for me, bangs).

Edit: my stylist did great on bangs, botched my body of hair. We went 3 for 3 on the asymmetry of her one run through on my ends. On the third time standing up and pulling my hair down tightly, I unintentionally reacted and said “wait what the fuck?” When I saw I’d be losing another half inch because of her job. Ends feel suuuuper thick compared to the body, still shedding, no light nice feeling I’m used to after a haircut. Cried in my car and regretted choosing a salon with availability over my average—good person. 😔😔

I have really long hair and I wanna start styling my hair more. It‘s really straight and when I use a curling iron I can never make it look good or keep the waves/locks. I tried heatless overnight curls before as well but I always mess up the hairline and it lays weirdly. I dont know if it‘s my hair texture or if it‘s the fact that I just have really long hair.

Help wanted Regret cutting my long hair😭

So just recently I chopped off my long ass hair which was at waist length to a very short wolf cut above my neck which basically makes me look like a boy and the extra short bangs 😭

I was doing fine for few days since it was easy to manage and I didn't have to go anywhere. But now I have to attend my nephew's first birthday where there will be tons of family and friends and I'm starting to regret it so much. 😭

My hair is like extra thick which makes it really hard to manage and drying it takes me hours. But tbh i was at the prettiest phase of my life with that long hair and now I just look so bad and i recently had my skin barrier damaged too and my face is fkd up as well. 🤌🏼

I am regretting it so bad and I want to grow my hair fast. 😭

My messed up mental health made me take it out on my hair.

Help wanted Looking for a kind of accessory.

I usually wear a ponytail and I thought I'd like to try putting it through something to extend it a bit, but I have no idea what that would be called or if it's a thing even. Like a ponytail cuff but longer, maybe a couple of inches or so, and made of something lightweight so I can have it over a high ponytail and it won't drag it down. Also I see most cuffs come with a hair tie inside but I'd rather use my own. So I basically just want a little tube I can clip around my hair tie, or maybe I could just wrap something around it. So yeah anyone know what that would be? Thanks.

Help wanted What is your go-to comfy hairstyle that isn't a bun or braid

Mt hair is almost butt-length and I live in a humid region. Leaving it half-up half-down is annoying, but buns and claw clips feel so heavy and eventually give me a headache. At this point the only comfortable option is one long braid everywhere from home to office to picnics.

Fellow long-haired girlies, what hairstyle do you swear by that are comfy, secure and do not pull on your scalp?

Help wanted Foods or supplements that helped your hair grow faster?

I noticed that magnesium glycinate seemed to help with hair growth, since Glycine is an amino acid that goes into keratin which goes into hair. And the magnesium helps absorb the glycine.

I’ve also noticed that on months where I incorporated more eggs into my diet, my hair grew faster than the usual half inch a month.

I usually French braid my hair overnight with hair a little bit damp.

Hair Color: mixture of

  1. Golden Green Light Blonde (Lolane Pixxel) &

  2. Golden Blonde (Garnier)

Slight Highlights Lolane Extra Light Blonde - I usually do it separately like on the next day. In a style of shampooing the outer most of hair

Natural Dye: Lemon

Result: Light Blonde consecutive use but if near the ocean or salty water result is Copper Blonde

Lemon Juice leave on for 30 minutes under the sun,

Natural Dye: Hibiscus Flower

Result: Black

Harvest Flower any color will do, I usually use Red since it's common, Remove the petals then grind the rest til juice come out, Put on dry hair for 10 minutes, it covers gray or white hair

I do brush my hair regularly, use conditioner and hair cream and yet it looks like this. I doubt it damage and rather really annoying frizz. How should I tackle this ?
