That was an interesting write-up, thanks. Are there any conferences or research being done to try and figure out how society could be best structured to stop the extremely long-lived and well-resourced from maintaining power, well, forever? I think it would be immediately useful in the short term and definitely needed in the long term otherwise folks that in theory could live for superhuman lengths of time will likely be reduced to normal or worse than average life expectancy given the worse-than-AI chaos the longevity equivalent of a semaglutide-style blockbuster could bring.

The sharpest idea in the paper is the redefinition: biological age as the minimum safe control cost of functional restoration, rather than a biomarker score. Hallmarks describe what is broken; this asks which intervention, in which order, under safety constraints, steers the system back. And the part that makes it serious instead of hand-wavy: twenty pre-specified falsifiable predictions, with the test being whether control-value reduction predicts translational success better than Hallmark annotation or biomarker reversal alone. Most aging frameworks never get that far.

What are the these hallmarks ?

You're not wrong, Walter, you're just an asshole.

I think healthy living, and calorie and/or protein restriction are really the only interventions that can be done to meaningfully prolong life by prolonging healthspan.

But that doesn't mean that some pharmacological or genetic treatments won't eventually be found.

Nah, I would want to not rot from the inside and end up looking like dying prune

A gastroenterologist with a book to sell says something "controversial" about a field of science he isn't doing research in and for some reason it gets posted to this sub.

Go ahead and skip reading it, wish i had.

Hopefully around the same time we’ll get robots building houses around the clock until there’s so much supply prices have to dump. Might as well dream big

ARPA-H was launched in 2022, and the PROSPR program was approved in early 2024.

Even if the FDA declared "aging" a disease tomorrow, the question remains how a feasible clinical trial targeting aging would be designed. ARPA-H PROSPR aims to set up the regulatory path for clinical trials targeting aging. At 7:50 he mentions the seven teams and three technical areas.

I was there and hosted a free event where we had five speakers speak at the Cambridge Community Center. Three agreed to have their talks posted, and they are now on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJLt0pRyNbNs (Preston Estep, myself, and Gennady Stolyarov)

I just posted on LinkedIn about the event https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7516534938964320257/

My experience at the Translational Longevity Summit was OK overall but I was very disappointed to see two complete frauds/crackpots/pseudoscientists sharing the stage with legitimate scientists and experts - Austin Crowder from Peptidehub.com and Carl "Buzz" Thompson. Crowder is an anti-vaxxer who has built a shoddy AI system that recommends unproven peptides for any indication you give it. Buzz Thompson sells magnet bracelets to protect people from EMF radiation (5G, etc) and believes in auras and chakras. While AARD and Biomarkers of Aging are scientific conferences, I am sorry to report that the Translational Longevity Summit is much less so. Both Crowder and Thompson were also vendors at the event. Both Bernie Siegel and David Barzilai claims they had no idea that they put on the program as speakers. It appears they were snuck onto the schedule by Joseph Krieger. Krieger told me he didn't care that Crowder was an anti-vaxxer and that he believes in "Energy Medicine". I'll be writing more about all this on my Substack soon.

You would think so. But as someone who keeps pet rats and goes to great length to ensure they are healthy and happy, you'd be surprised at how little of this rodent research makes its way into the hands of pet owners in the form of anything usable.

They’re going to end up confirming Sinclair’s theory of aging. Double-strand DNA breaks caused by hard radiation pull sirtuins away from their primary job managing gene expression to the emergency role repairing the break. Sinclair’s lab did this on Earth years ago.

I mean why is it like that? There must be an evolutionary advantage to life longer as a larger species or am I wrong?
