Linux command or shortcut you wish someone had taught you on day one?

One of the things I like about Linux is that there are so many small commands and shortcuts that can make everyday use easier, but a lot of them seem to be things you discover by accident or learn after you've already needed them.

I'm not talking about advanced sysadmin tricks or complicated shell scripts. I mean practical little things that are genuinely useful once you know they exist.

For example, Ctrl + R in Bash lets you search through your command history, which is much nicer than repeatedly pressing the up arrow when you know you've run a command before.

I'm curious what other tips people have that are simple enough for a beginner to use immediately but useful enough that experienced users still rely on them.

What's one Linux command, keyboard shortcut, or small terminal trick you think every newcomer should learn early?

What Linux skill made troubleshooting feel less intimidating?

There's a lot to learn when getting into Linux, from package managers and permissions to system services and reading logs. It can be overwhelming when a simple problem leads you down a rabbit hole of terminal commands and forum posts.

For people who've been using Linux for a while, what skill made the biggest difference in how confidently you troubleshoot problems? Was it learning basic terminal commands, understanding the filesystem, figuring out how to read logs, or something else?

I'd especially like to hear what you'd recommend learning early instead of waiting until something breaks.

What Linux setup would you recommend for someone who wants a reliable daily driver, not a new hobby?

I'm interested in what experienced Linux users would recommend to someone who mainly wants to use their computer for browsing, studying, office work, programming occasionally, and general everyday tasks.

There are so many distributions and desktop environments that choosing one can feel harder than actually installing Linux. Every recommendation seems to come with a different philosophy, customization options, or warnings about what beginners should avoid.

For someone who values stability, sensible defaults, good hardware compatibility, and minimal maintenance, would you recommend something like Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora, or something else?

I'm not necessarily looking for the most customizable or technically interesting setup. I'd rather have something that works reliably without needing to troubleshoot it every other week.

What would you install for that kind of user today, and are there any common beginner mistakes you'd suggest avoiding?

[SOLVED] video playback - stuttering issues (Cinnamon)

Hardware: Dell Inspiron 5379

GPU: Intel UHD Graphics 620 (Kaby Lake)

OS: Linux Mint, Ubuntu 24.04-based system

Display session: X11

The problem

I was troubleshooting choppy video playback in my browser on Linux Mint. During the investigation, I discovered that although my laptop had an Intel UHD Graphics 620, OpenGL was using llvmpipe, which renders graphics in software using the CPU instead of the GPU.

My original "glxinfo -B" output showed:

direct rendering: Yes

Vendor: Mesa (0xffffffff)

Device: llvmpipe (LLVM 20.1.2, 256 bits)

Accelerated: no

OpenGL renderer string: llvmpipe (LLVM 20.1.2, 256 bits)

This explained why graphics rendering could be unnecessarily CPU-intensive.

Step 1 — Check the graphics hardware and driver

I ran:

inxi -Gxx

The output confirmed that the laptop had Intel UHD Graphics 620 and the kernel's "i915" driver was loaded.

However, the OpenGL renderer was "llvmpipe", which indicated that the GPU was not being used for OpenGL rendering.

Step 2 — Check VA-API video acceleration

I ran:

vainfo

This successfully loaded Intel's "iHD_drv_video.so" driver and listed supported video profiles, including H.264, HEVC, and VP9.

This was an important clue: the VA-API video driver was available, but OpenGL rendering was still falling back to software. These are separate parts of the graphics stack.

Step 3 — Investigate the Xorg log

I checked the Xorg log:

grep -Ei 'intel|AIGLX|swrast|DRI' /var/log/Xorg.0.log

The relevant errors were:

(II) intel(0): \[DRI2\] DRI driver: i965

(EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/i965_dri.so failed

(EE) AIGLX error: unable to load driver i965

(II) IGLX: Loaded and initialized swrast

(II) GLX: Initialized DRISWRAST GL provider for screen 0

The legacy Xorg Intel driver was attempting to load "i965_dri.so", which was missing. Xorg consequently fell back to software rendering.

Step 4 — Inspect the Xorg configuration

I checked the configuration files:

ls -la /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/

There was no main "/etc/X11/xorg.conf", but there were several files under "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/".

The important discovery was that the Intel configuration selected the legacy driver:

Section "Device"

Identifier "Intel Graphics"

Driver "intel"

Option "TearFree" "true"

Option "TripleBuffer" "true"

EndSection

For this setup, I switched the configuration to the modern Xorg "modesetting" driver.

Step 5 — Switch to the modesetting driver

I edited "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf" so that it contained:

Section "Device"

Identifier "Intel Graphics"

Driver "modesetting"

EndSection

I saved the file and rebooted the laptop.

Important: Changing the Xorg configuration requires restarting the graphical session. Checking "glxinfo" before rebooting still showed "llvmpipe", so I initially thought the change had not worked. After rebooting, the result was different.

Step 6 — Verify the fix

After rebooting, I ran:

glxinfo -B

The output now showed:

direct rendering: Yes

Vendor: Intel (0x8086)

Device: Mesa Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620 (KBL GT2) (0x5917)

Version: 25.2.8

Accelerated: yes

OpenGL vendor string: Intel

OpenGL renderer string: Mesa Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620 (KBL GT2)

OpenGL core profile version string: 4.6 (Core Profile) Mesa 25.2.8

Success! OpenGL was now using the Intel UHD Graphics 620, and hardware acceleration was enabled.

What I learned

\- Having the correct kernel driver loaded does not necessarily mean OpenGL is using the GPU.

\- VA-API video decoding and OpenGL rendering are separate components, so one can work while the other has problems.

\- Xorg logs can reveal why the system is falling back to software rendering.

\- The legacy "intel" Xorg driver can cause issues on some systems when its expected Mesa driver files are missing.

\- Switching to "modesetting" and rebooting fixed the OpenGL rendering problem on my system.

What remains to be tested

If you have a similar Intel GPU and Linux Mint setup, check "glxinfo -B" before changing anything. Your configuration and symptoms may be different, so don't blindly copy the Xorg configuration without checking your own logs.

Thanks to everyone sharing Linux troubleshooting advice!

Bottles for a newbie on the steam deck who’s not very familiar with Linux

• Upvotes

So im playing NR racing 2003 on my steam deck via proton and it works amazingly however ever certain mods don’t work on proton and I’ve been trying to install stalker gamma for a year and I ultimately had decided to wait until the Linux client launched

Well the NR comunity mentioned trying bottles and I never attempted it assuming it would be too confusing for me, as I don’t know how to do things like protonticks my usual tactics are just run X program via proton

So, that got me thinking about trying bottles and at least seeing if it could work for my purposes. However I also don’t really know bottles outside of hearing in passing it emulates a windows environment to run games you might not be able to, so im like it’s worth a try at least to install

My real question is what exactly would this do will it effect performance, if this doesn’t work and i want to uninstall bottles how difficult is it, will i have to go into my desktop every single time i want to launch a game via bottles?

I more-so want to understand like as a gamer why bottles is useful and what I need to know about bottles and using it and how difficult it is to say update

If i remember correctly i know proton emulates the controls of a windows game via translating my inputs into something that the game use

External hard drive is "read only", so I can't back up my files.

So, I am planning on switching distros from Linux Mint to Cachy OS. Last time when I went from Windows 11 to Mint I used an external hard drive connected to the laptop to handle the backups and the file transfer...but now that same hard drive doesn't let me do ANYTHING with it.

I have checked ownership stuff, apparently my user already has ownership of the drive. When I try to do changes to it apparently it is "read only" and I can't do anything with it other than copy files to my main hard drive. This even after I mounted it properly (I think??)

I know a lot of the "read only" file system stuff is for security and such, but this is not my root folders where messing around can actually break things, this is a drive I need to back things up into.

I'm not gonna be able to make the switch if I don't figure this out. I don't really have anywhere else where I could do this.

The drive in question is an HDD drive repurposed for just...storing stuff, and in this case I just need it to move my files off and back onto my main drive because it has enough space to do so.

Advice Is it better to switch to linux for better performance for macbook air 2018 with 8gb ram? (or should I downgrade)

I use my macbook as a secondary machine for writing and research purposes and the current macos sonama feels so sluggish when I am using AI apps, researching on browser and even while using settings so I want to get best performance possible, so I am thinking if linux can make any difference.

If so suggest me best distro for it and I don't need any fancy customizations (as long the default os doesn't look ugly)

Ps. The apps I use in my macbook are Chatgpt, Claude, Safari, Obsidian, Spotify.

Any 'gotchas' in this proposed build?

Hey y'all. I was gifted a Nvidia 5060 OC 8GB. I am going to build a system around the card. I'm not a gamer so I don't care much about the 8GB card, it's better than my current GTX960. I build a new rig like every 10 years and this one is 11 years old at this point. I have been a Debian guy for nearly 20 years so I'm not really asking for an help with getting anything actually set up.

I am more curious if anyone spots an obvious problem with any of the hardware. Something like "The BE2XX wifi chipset isn't supported with speeds faster than 802.11B" or "Realtek is known to revert to token-ring networking under any kernel >5.0" or "STOP! The Ultra 7 270K literally explodes with anything later than Bookworm!!".

I am looking a bundle that includes:

Intel Ultra 7 270K Plus

32 GB Corsair Vengeance DDR5-6000 PCS-48000 CL38 (2x16GB)

Gigabyte Z890 Eagle Wifi7 Plus

* The MB has an onboard Realtek 2.5GbE LAN chip but unfortunately I can not seem to narrow it down to a specific chip.
* There is also an onboard Intel Wi-Fi 7 BE202 (BE200NGW M) which also has BT 5.4. As an aside, I have a Ubiquiti U6+ AP so Wifi 7 isn't a deal breaker.
* The sound (I use a bluetooth sound bar anyway) is a Realtek ALC1220.
* Obviously it's based on the Z890 chipset.

And, of course, the Asus Geforce RTX 5060 8GB (DUAL-RTX5060-O8G)

Thanks for reading!

Support Linux laptop having audio problems with Headphones

Hey, I've been trying multiple linux distros, but one constant is always the same problem with audio. If, while my laptop is turned off, I unplug and plug again my headphones, once I turn it back on, the audio quality is terrible. It's low, it's broken, I can't understand any voice. If I unplug it and plug it back again, it goes back to working. I have searched everywhere. Currently I'm using Fedora 44 with Gnome. I disabled power save on my grub, but only that so far and it didn't work. Any tips?

EDIT1:
i found the following command:
echo "options snd_hda_intel power_save=0 power_save_controller=N" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/audio-fix.conf

sudo dracut --force
which apparently fixed the issue. I tested and it's working. If it breaks again i will return here.

Support Wiping MacOS on a Macbook Air

TLDR: Is doing a clean Linux Install best for getting rid of MacOS or can I just delete the MacOS partition and shuffle my existing Linux install to the front of the disc? Are there risks of bricking the laptop with SIP being a thing.

So I've been working on a 2017 Intel Macbook air in Kubuntu and it's great, lots of tweaking to get it just how I like and now it's pretty much flawless, never want to go back.

The issue I'm having is I saved the MacOS partition just in case for dependencies etc, but it keeps messing up the EFI and locking me out of GRUB. I think it's something to do with that System Integrity Protection thing, but can't work out how to nuke that for good either. The only fix I've found is installing Kubuntu again on a spare partition so it can reset GRUB as the default boot and then going back into my old install. Not ideal, huge time sink and I'm always worried about my files, even with regular backups. rEFInd was no help, unfortunately. I've thought of making another boot partition as a backup but that kind of seems like more of a headache.

I'm done with MacOS at this point, just want a single boot system. My question is how do I go about doing that without bricking my lappy? Can I just delete the MacOS partition and shuffle my Kubuntu stuff to the front, or should I do a clean install of the whole drive and start from scratch? Would be nice to not have to re-tweak Kubuntu, but very do-able if it'll mean not risking a brick. Currently sda1 has my boot, then 100GB is in sda2 with MacOS, then I have a swap partition, and all my good stuff is on sda4 with some junk around it.

Thoughts?

Advice What are OneNote alternatives for Linux?

I'm leaving Windows soon and I need a program to take notes for studying.

I really like the infinite page layout (especially vertically), the textboxes and the section subdivisions (although I'd like the chance to nest subdivisions, if possible) as well as the markdown, the high number of list bullets and sync options.

What alternative would be the best compromise? I've heard of Obsidian, Xournal++ and other options, but IDK what's the best option for me

Support The keyboard shortcut that ends the X11 session

Hi.

A novice Linux user is typing something in the web browser, then suddenly the screen goes black.

I come to see what's happening. There is a cursor blinking so it's clearly a virtual terminal. I cycle through Ctrl+Alt+F keys hoping to find the desktop again, as it usually resides in F7 or F9, but to no avail. In F1, I run top, and to my surprise all the apps that are supposed to be running are gone.

So the desktop is completely gone. Killed. But killing X11 normally, via killall X, killall Xorg or kill -9 -1 usually returns to the display manager (lightdm in this case), and here the screen just goes completely black, with an unresponsive cursor icon, though other vterms work correctly and you can start X again, although it's a fresh session.

I am pretty sure a keyboard shortcut is the cause of this, but I haven't been able to investigate which keyboard shortcut it is.

If anyone knows more about this, I would gladly accept any explanations, and solutions on how to disable this.

If nobody knows anything then I'll result to writing a keylogger, since, unlike Wayland, you can do it under X11, and hope it manages to log the shortcut before the shortcut kills it along with all other X11 applications.

Thanks.

Advice Help Extending Battery Life

Hello everyone and thank you.

I have some questions regarding maximizing battery life on my HP Omen 16 (Core Ultra 5 225H | RTX 5050) gaming laptop that's on CachyOS.

When I'm on battery, I switch to 60Hz, lower brightness as conditions allow, and have it automatically switch to Power Save mode.

I've read about PRIME Offload so, should I still go into iGPU Mode through BIOS?

Should I use TLP instead of the default Settings's Power Management? Or, Auto-CPUfreq?

Any other advice?

Support Kernel Panic Linux

I was installing Linux Mint on my laptop when I started encountering several errors. Somehow, I ended up at a CMD and ran the "exit" command; immediately, a kernel panic appeared, stating something like "attempted to kill init," along with an exit code consisting entirely or mostly of zeros, I don't recall exactly. When I turned the laptop off and back on, it booted into the Windows installation I already had, but Linux Mint failed to install. Have I damaged any of the hardware?

Support Lightweight graphical interface in storage

I'd like to know what graphical interfaces are available in lightweight Linux for storage on USB drives and limited microSD cards.
