Please report any posts bragging or showing off they got banned in another sub! Reminder of other sub rules: Also, we only allow one anti-linux post per week (we used to get dozens a day) and any tier list MUST have Hanna Montana Linux as S teir (which must be a true S tier at the top) regardless of the topic of that tier list.

So basically... Alpine Linux running Wayland, compiled with Musl, and maintained by someone who ignores your forum posts?

I almost forgot! I have you guys bookmarked.

Did you ever get a chance to check out the kernel autobuild stuff?

u/Pitiful-Welcome-399 New York Nix⚾s 11h ago

?????

0

u/RvstiNiall 11h ago

Oh, I assumed you were part of the team.

I had recommended they check out different autobuild setups to build the linux kernel, without gnu make, without having to do it manually for each new kernel.

Chimera is a general-purpose Linux-based OS born from unhappiness

Fuck did gnu or systemd do?

I know what a lot of people hate systemd because of their position on age verification and not following the "linux filosophy" (one program, does one thing, systemd isnt just an init system, is a network manager, a system journal...)

Edit1: At my viewpoint, its just a minory that does a lot of noise on something that they know its wrong (even i do) but almost nobody really cares. Most end users say "holly s*** it works!" instead of getting a black screen and moving to windows again, thinking "well, never again".

Add: no epic anticheat support and artcraft cancer

3

u/IndependentNeat7217 M'Fedora 2h ago edited 2h ago

I don't like what's on the post above, but epic's anticheat is just a red line, i'm not letting a multi million dollar companie say what i can't do to my kernel, nor have a privilege higher than my my user on my machine, especially a one that i don't trust.

u/LookItVal 14h ago

I guess I'm just a little freak over here who actually like x11 and systemd

3

u/Temporary_Call_3675 14h ago

1

u/Emotional_Solid6538 6h ago

Why do you like Wayland more than X11

2

u/serge-mv 14h ago

A lot of people like x11 and I don't know anyone who doesn't like GNU. I mean the formal name of Linux of GNU/Linux and you still have a bunch of purists correcting everyone with "actually, it's GNU".

Also, a lot of people like Wayland now. Most distros switched and most issues went away. Only some particularly stubborn ones dislike it.

The meme is just so-so. It's a bit funny because of constant tech holly wars, but hardly the truth.

4

u/Temporary_Call_3675 14h ago

there is distros try to be gnuless like chimera linux

3

u/RvstiNiall 10h ago

Chimera tries to use "the best tool for the job" in accordance with q66's beliefs. Nano is included because its pretty great.

"This means Chimera is not a GNU/Linux system, as it utilizes neither GNU utilities, nor GNU libc, nor GNU toolchain. However, the project is not anti-GNU/GPL, and its userland choice is primarily technical. Users are generally free to use whichever software they like." - https://chimera-linux.org/about/#alternative-userland

1

u/errepunto Arch BTW 14h ago

Find, grep, bash, nano, gcc, make, gawk... all of the are nice pieces of software.

1

u/serge-mv 14h ago

I know. There are a handful of GNUless distros, but most of them still use gnu utils and formally Linux is still called GNU/Linux. The distros that don't use GNU remove it from their name and marketing (like Ubuntu)

u/CubePlayer1114 12h ago

Yeah, Plasma dropping X11 was barely an issue for me, though I'm on an AMD card anyways
I was using it for a while since Waydroid does not function without it, even if I barely use Waydroid, I just stayed on Wayland since I had no reason to go back to X11

u/Pseudolithops 13h ago

When no linux?

5

u/slicehyperfunk UwUntu (´ ᴗ`✿) 11h ago

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

u/M2k1e0L 9h ago

I think it meant not saying GNU additionally to Linux. I knew it before, but i would never say it because it sounds lame. Not my fault they can't pick a cool name. They should have call it ARK or something like that. And i know what it stands for as shortform. Still lame asf.

1

u/platokrasi 8h ago

how about LiGNUx?

2

u/M2k1e0L 8h ago

burn that abomination of a name lol

1

u/npc_housecat 7h ago

ERM aktually we have taken to referring to is at GNU plus Linux.

u/CannedDeath 14h ago

NO GNU

based

12

u/p47guitars 12h ago

Erasure of our roots.

How is it, software with a copy-left ideology is being shunned and frowned upon? Is it because of the idea that anyone can use it regardless of endevor? Or is it because c is considered to be abhorant?

6

u/gamblizardy 8h ago

The anti-copyleft pro "permissive" license trend is 100% due to industry influence.

2

u/CannedDeath 11h ago

I thought this was about the GNU Project's software, not about the GPL and copyleft licensing. Some people complain of GNU components being bloated or not POSIX-compliant. Busybox and musl are a lot lighter and closer to POSIX. Busybox is GPLv2 too. I think there are also complaints of GCC being technically harder to extend to new languages and arches than LLVM/Clang. Honestly, I'm alright with the GNU project's products aside from the hideous eyesore that is GNU indentation style and the ancient nonsense of autotools.

1

u/p47guitars 10h ago

Well, it's not like you have to use GCC. But I feel like replacing the core utilities and rewriting them in rust was just a waste of effort. The core utilities were already really lightweight to begin with, and I don't think that any amount of rust makes them any better.

I'm also kind of curious why posix compliance is important in 2026 when clearly the world of gnu Linux has become its own thing.

1

u/Emotional_Solid6538 6h ago

Yeah pretty much. GNU while was a consumer based project with various software over time. Many of their stuff has bloat. Instead of seperating into different products or alternatives. Its becoming one for all based stuff which isnt modular like Linux is meant to be

5

u/dodyninja 12h ago

how does one use linux without gnu

4

u/Pitiful-Welcome-399 New York Nix⚾s 11h ago

the biggest inconvenience will be musl

2

So, Alpine. Cool.

u/1mgsel Crying gnu 🐃 7h ago

Is XLibre allowed? Or only option is just Wayland?

1

u/cAtloVeR9998 1h ago

XLibre has little long-term chance of success. Every major desktop environment has moved or is moving towards being Wayland-only.

4

u/Ok_Grapefruit6661 6h ago

Who hate GNU? Hate againt FOSS ideology and GNU will not be tolrated

1

u/frakt_ 6h ago

Some dudes think gnu software is bloated

3

u/Ok_Grapefruit6661 6h ago

They are just larper. They used something else like musl and think they are superior

3

u/ilnarildarovuch Doesn't use Linux 15h ago

True

2

u/Careless_Subject8377 11h ago

I'm perfectly fine with x11. Yes it has issues but they're minor (oh no I can't go above the gold standard of 60fps with my cheap side monitor connected, ohhhhhh nooooooo) and at the end of the day it works.

NO Linux next?

Hardcore Linux cultists:

  • You should try Linux, because Linux is freedom
  • Yey! So I choose this Kubuntu, and I love it!
  • No, it's totally forbidden, you are banned from the community

u/Linguistic-mystic 14h ago

GNU is ok but not glibc. Really, musl here, now is what would save Linux. Hell, I’d even use systemd if it ran on musl.
