They deserve it (and more), unlike a certain distribution that raised millions of dollars for basically dotfiles.

Unironically the worst thing about Omarchy are the dotfiles and the opinionated stuff.

Companies are fundig it because they are looking for standarization for AI agents to work with your OS. It's the Whatsapp of AI Linux, it's shit but it was the first.

Omarchy is a political compaign, not a Distro. that's why they get funded like one as well.

Nix is by far the most agentic friendly distro out there.

How so? (About nix)

The only political thing here is the people saying a distro is far right.

u/Different_Back_5470 1d ago

go tell DHH to shut up about politics then

Why the double standards? All the left wing people in Linux never do.

u/Different_Back_5470 1d ago

DHH is calling to cull people of certain races like we do with animals. you tell me if there's another distro lead by someone as extreme as that.

Also, other distros focus on developing that. you have weirdos at NixOS but they're still providing massive contributions to Linux ecosphere. that's why I don't judge them on their politics. Omarchy adds absolutely nothing, it's pure unreviewed vibecoded slop. Their main talking points, is their politics.

Yeah I dont believe he has said that. Have you got evidence. Such statements are usually from a game of telephone starting with things taken out of context

And your quote was obviously incorrect.

He wants the gypsies out of the city by deportation. A notion that is shared with about 80% of Danes. And the Danish social democratic prime minister.

That is not culling them.

Half of my time online is wasted by people wilfully misunderstanding the discourse thus making discussion impossible.

I will if I see him posting them on a community about Linux.

Whatsapp of AI Linux

I think I just threw up in my mouth a bit.

They're funding it because they're right wing extremists funding a known right wing extremist. It's not standardisation, there's no technical answers to justify it.

(edit: the "they" in this sentence is referring to large tech companies, not Framework)

What distro did that, Ubuntu?

u/spreedx 2d ago

Omarshit

u/MikrusYT 2d ago

Oh, marchy?

Number is at 21 million now, ridiculous on it's own without considering the abysmal funding massive projects that run half the world get.

meanwhile the people making all the core utils like xz bash tz make like less then minimum wage despite all the billions of devices using them. openssh is maintained by a few volunteers at most. and they dont get any of that funding.

edit:technicly not core utils but you get my point

These guys should fake their death and hope the fallout triggers companies into paying to protect their investments.

Are Framework laptops any good? I've been thinking of getting one, but their video card modules are sadly kind of on the low end in terms of VRAM.

They are basically the brand new equivalent to an old thinkpad, or at least the closest you'll get. They are't for everyone, and they aren't perfect, but they are solid overall.

u/inaccurateTempedesc 2d ago

I'd love to get one but they are a little bit delicate, at least compared to a Thinkpad. I'm pretty abusive to my daily drivers.

The metal chassis on the new pro is really solid unlike their previous efforts, it's also quite expensive though so YMMV

I replaced my t530 old brick by a new amd 13. So far nothing to complaint. It is lighter and doesn't look like it will survive if I drop from the 1st floor window (which the t530 might have to be honest). But for ordinary use case, programming, containers, carrrying around it is a good machine. Better than my wife's hp elite or my work's dell latitude IMO.

I got a framework 13 for uni second hand a few weeks ago and love it! nicest machine ive ever owned and runs debian like dream

For what they are (user repairable and upgradeable laptops) they're really the only game in town. I've been using them since the first generation of the FW laptop 13. It's been working pretty well so far, and I'm going to upgrade my keyboard, trackpad and the palm rest module to a new version that's been milled from CNC and comes with a haptic touchpad which is damn cool.

Support has been hit or miss for most people including me. Pure value for money isn't there just yet (it actually doesn't exist for the Laptop 16; It's possible with the Laptop 13 if you're someone like me who wants to hold on to the laptop and incrementally upgrade just one or two parts every 5-7 years).

They're a small company so the pricing on rams etc. has fucked them more

I bought the first batch of ryzen 13 in models. I love it. The build quality is good, and it's been solid for all my needs as a developer.  I didn't really play games on it. Having ports of just what I need is wonderful. No dongles needed.

Ive never needed to replace or upgrade anything yet but I've been extremely happy with it and feel comfort that I can break the screen and replace it.

I got one and it's the best laptop I've ever had. Also, at last back in 2023 and in Europe, it was much cheaper than a Thinkpad or Dell with the same specs and no nonsense like soldered RAM. Also 100% out of the box Linux compatibility.

They can be fixed and upgraded fairly easily which is good. The only issue is that they cost an arm and a leg

u/Datuser14 2d ago edited 2d ago

Very expensive, post purchase support is terrible, company has provided financial and in kind support to white supremacists and transphobes.

1

u/Historical_Camel_790 21h ago

Where are you getting that info bro 😭 you're trolling right

-1

u/Datuser14 20h ago

Not trolling

-5

u/Itz_Raj69_ 2d ago

Just get a normal laptop. You'll save more by using it for 5 years and replacing, rather than trying to upgrade one part at a time with a framework

Getting my F13 Pro in November and I'm trying to decide between CachyOS and Fedora (Nobara). May go with Fedora but it's great to see support for more Linux distros.

I tried CachyOS recently, but I didn’t like it. There were several different software update utilities. There was a mix of graphical and console apps installed by default. (Like a console hardware monitor, another hardware monitor with a gui from 1999, etc.) They installed avast for mdns queries (.local domain support) by default when it’s not really needed. Printing support has several superfluous apps installed. And the console ran screenfetch each time it was started, which annoyed me since the ascii art doesn’t work on my 1080p panel because of long hardware names.

I went back to fedora silverblue. It has automatic secure boot support in my experience (cachyos needs configured). I prefer the atomic distro for security. It’s integration is just more polished. Yes, I can’t install things the normal way, except for snaps. I’m fine with that.

Of course everyone has an opinion, and that’s ok. Choosing a desktop distro is like finding a partner. Everyone has their preferences.

I would buy a Framework if it didn’t cost twice as much as two brand new laptops from a competing brand with similar or even better specs. That’s a lot of spare parts.

15

u/National_Way_3344 1d ago

Other brands get sweetheart deals on ram and ssds while framework has to barter for the crumbs.

Also they can loss lead by bundling spyware, anti virus spyware, and operating system spyware.

My next laptop I buy will be a framework at any cost. Besides they're actually only 20% more expensive at most over another you'd actually buy. There's cheaper dog shit out there with soldered ram and ssds but I was never buying that.

3

u/Different_Back_5470 1d ago

yeah the trick is to reuse hardware you already own. saves tons on your purchase

0

u/Indolent_Bard 1d ago

For business class laptops, they're actually not much more expensive.

1

u/Historical_Camel_790 21h ago

My favourite distro and my favourite laptop brand!

-2

u/kansetsupanikku 1d ago

Great for CachyOS!

As for Framework, adding more wash is not a replacement for admitting the existence of a stain and removing the dirt first
