Persian Leopard (Panthera pardus saxicolor) The skull of a Persian leopard next to a Caucasian lynx, Asiatic cheetah and a Caspian tigress

As you can see, the leopard's sagittal crest is weak, which is common in adult female leopards or sub-adult males. We don't know anything about the skulls so this is speculation. Just to be clear before some people are going to freak out.

What about a skull from an actual adult male?

We can use the longest Persian leopard skull that belonged to a male from Golestan National Park. Why this particular skull? Because Dr Farhadinia (Persian leopard) said "The measurements indicate that the animal has been as large as an adult female tiger which once occurred within Golestan National Park" The measurements were 281.35 mm in length and 178.95 mm in width, a total score of 18.12"

Is this skull Caspian tigress-sized?

Mazák gave a range of 255.5 - 297.0 mm for Caspian tigresses' skull length (average 284.29 mm). Their skull width range was 183.0 – 219.0 mm (average 197,33 mm). He measured a total of 10 skulls. The average skull score is 18.96"

Was the male leopard as large as an adult Caspian tigress?

With a weight range of 85-135kg and based on skull data; the Caspian tigress is/was overall the bigger animal, there's no debate. But there is a very clear overlap. Given that 110kg is the midpoint of their weight range and the leopard skull is smaller than average for a Caspian tigress but bigger than small adult ones, the leopard skull belonged to a huge male in the 90-100kg range.

African Leopard (Panthera pardus pardus) A leopard at dinner! 🐆

On safari in Kruger, shortly before dinner, we'd been observing this male leopard and a female across the dry riverbed. Dinner was called. We were all seated in the dining room when a hubbub happened. Staff was coming in, making sure all the guests were accounted for, closing up the walls.

My guide, Steve, was getting our drinks at the bar when this happened. Everyone was safe. Steve and his associate were the only ones out in the area, and he captured this footage. It was terribly exciting!

African Leopard (Panthera pardus pardus) Friday Night in Limpopo

Friday night in Limpopo, South Africa, we found a leopard resting among the rocks.

Before anyone loses their leopard loving minds about the red light: this is the responsible way to view wildlife at night. Our spotlight was red on purpose.

Most nocturnal animals are far less sensitive to red light than to white light. A bright white spotlight can dazzle an animal and wreck its night vision for a while. It can also leave prey exposed to predators, or put a predator off its hunt. Red light lets us see them while they carry on as if we weren't there.

Seeing predators in the bush after dark is an enormous thrill!

African Leopard (Panthera pardus pardus) The most brutal leopard fight ever recorded (read description)

This is a legendary fight between Mufufunyane and Tyson. Mufufunyane was the resident male and Tyson was the new kid on the block. Mufufunyane was smaller than Tyson but had the experience. After a long fight Mufufunyane emerged victorious. Tyson lost an eye in this fight.

African Leopard (Panthera pardus pardus) Due to the controversy surrounding my previous post, here's another photo of the leopard and cougar skulls from a better angle

In this photo it's clear that the cougar skull belonged to an adult male. The sagittal crest is developed and the rostrum is as wide as the leopard's.

African Leopard (Panthera pardus pardus) When comparing the skulls of different animals, the age, sex, ancestry, and other factors matter because individuals vary in size even within the same species. Here's a proper comparison between two large males for both pumas and leopards, not that of an outlier leopard and a juvenile puma.
