Help🧠 Help needed: „Iść do ...” vs. „Iść na ...”

Hello, folks! So I learned about the prepositions na and do and I don't know precisely when to apply which. Both seem to express movement towards something.

First thing I noticed is that with countries, regions, cities, and people, you only use do (do Polski, do Śląska, do Wrocławia, do matki, etc. ) Did I understand that correctly?

Then there are other places (like within cities). And sometimes you use do and sometimes na. At first I thought do is used with locations and na with events or happenings (do muzeum na wystawę, do restaurancji na obiad, do filharmonii na koncert, do apteki, etc.). But this doesn't seem to be completely true, because then I saw na uniwersytet na konferencję and na dyskotekę. Those examples violate the principle do with locations and na with events.

So is there a rule, or do I have to remember for every noun if it's used with do or na?

Za wasz pomoc dziękuję bardzo!

Help🧠 Learning Polish, hoping to meet some people

Dzień dobry. I recently started learning Polish because I'll be moving to Poland in a few months. I'd like to meet people, native speakers or other learners, it makes no difference to me.

I'm a beginner, so I'm just looking to chat a bit and hear what life in Poland is like. Proszę, comment or message me if you feel like it.

Dziękuję i pozdrawiam.

Help needed in achieving C1 level in Polish, focusing on writing and comprehension

Hello!

I am a native Polish speaker however I moved to a different country when I was very young. I am currently a student and for a project I decided to improve my Polish, since it's so important to me. My writing is my biggest weakness, reading too but I find it much easier. I speak pretty well, everyday with my family however I really want to balance out my proficiency as I would love to engage more deeply in this language, comfortably reading books and writing anything I wish.

I was wondering, does anyone have any tips in making writing sound more sophisticated and advanced, really separating it from everyday, conversational Polish? Is there any books, authors which someone could recommend in developing a richer vocabulary overall as well, as that is another struggle of mine and I would love to expand it.

Any personal experience tips are also welcome, has anyone worked on improving their own Polish, living in another country?

Thanks for reading and once again, I would appreciate any tips! :)

Learning Polish is harder in Katowice than other cities?

Hi I am learning Polish but I’ve concern that people in katowice speaks with accent or not? Or how often or how many percent of people? Sometimes I don’t understand if people speaks polish so fast, sometimes I understand a lot, so depends of the person. In that case should I be worry that generally it is harder to understand people who lives in katowice against to other regions?

Devon - Looking to Learn Polish

Hello - I was looking at starting lessons but it is quite an expensive thing to have one on one tutoring.

Any other recommendations? I worry things like Duolingo don’t actually work for fluency.

Are there any group classes or meet up groups local to me (Newton Abbot, Totnes) that anyone would recommend?

Help🧠 I'm getting into polish media also looking for friends

I want to learn Polish in various ways, like using the old notebook for grammar and listening to music and watching shows.

I would love some recommendations, preferably something easy to follow for a beginner, haha. For example, let's exclude the rap genre in music. I'm a fan of classical music, but sadly I don't know many songs, so please help me.

For shows and TV, I'm lost. I'm thinking of watching stuff randomly, but I might lose interest in the show. I'm currently watching The Witcher (Wiedźmin), the very first show I'm starting with, and I'm loving it since I already watched the English version. Any recommendations would be nice, thank you.

Also, since I'm looking for friends, it would be nice to get to know a few nice people to help each other with languages. I'm confident in my ability to help with English since I hold a bachelor's degree in it, so I would love to help you out.

Also, with no pressure, I hope to meet up with the buddies I make here, since I'm moving to Poland in a few months to work with my brother.

I'm 24 years old and into the gym and games. Sorry for the long post, and nice to meet you!

Hanging out with foreign friends always reminds me how weird “bless you” actually is. In Poland we just say “na zdrowie” (wish you health), because dragging God into a dust allergy feels a bit dramatic.

Any native German looking for a language exchange with a Polish person?

I speak fluent German - I understand everything. However, given I didn't have much opportunity to speak it for a few years, I frequently have doubts if what I'm saying is correct.

If your situation with Polish is similar and you're seeking some language exchange, let's connect.

I'm F40. I'm preferably looking for somebody above 30. The gender doesn't matter.

Pozdrawiam! 😊

Help🧠 Been here for 6y. No i'm maybe A2. Can i pull a B2 in 9 months?

Hello,

I was a student here for 6 years. And shamefully, i did not learn polish. I'm not gonna go through the reasons, but it was the biggest mistake i made throughout my stay. I even feel ashamed toward poles for doing so.

Anyways, i learned polish to A2 level in the uni, and throughout the years i have heard alot, picked up words and probably can recognise every word ( tho i dont understand).

I understand how wrong these "can i do xxx in x months" are; but there are expectations and there are delusions. And i wanna see in which part of spectrum the 9 months lands.

I would be happy if you tell me about your experince if you learned polish in a short time. And whether you find my expection rational.

Thank you

Help🧠 how would you recommend learning polish to reach b1 in around 2 years?

hi yall, maybe this question is the usual one...

I'm currently living in Spain and I'd like to move to Poland in the next couple of years, mainly because there seem to be better job opportunities for my field there.

I already lived in Poland for around 3 months earlier this year, mostly in Warszawa, and I also visited Kraków when I had the money. I honestly fell in love with lots of things about the country and its culture, and I'd really like to move back there.

I'm currently studying and I have around 2 years before I plan to move, maybe less. my goal is to reach at least a b1 level in Polish by then, so I can have more opportunities in the local job market instead of only aiming for international companies, which often require more qualifications but allow you to work in English.

I know b1 might not be enough for every job, but I think it'd be a good starting point, both professionally and for integrating into the country. if I have the opportunity, I'd also like to do another internship in Poland during my last year of studies.

the thing is, I'm currently a student, so I'd prefer to learn using free resources rather than paying for courses. for those who have learned Polish as a foreign language, what would you recommend? which free resources, books, websites or apps would you use? how would you approach learning the language if you had around 2 years to reach b1? and when would you start focusing on speaking with other people and how?

I'd appreciate any advice or personal experiences. dzięki! :)

Help🧠 Would you change any words on this Polish 'Swadesh list'?

I've compiled a 100-word Polish 'Swadesh list' using Wiktionary's longer list for my language game linguil. Could any native Polish speakers tell me if there is a more common/appropriate word for any of the entries below (bearing in mind there can be only one Polish entry per English word). Wiktionary is normally pretty accurate but there are sometimes errors, so I want to ensure the game is fair by verifying. Unlike a normal Swadesh list, it is fine if the word is a borrowing if a comparatively common (i.e. non-archaic) 'native' word does not exist, as I am aiming for modern Polish as it is spoken.

So, would you change any of these words? Feedback is welcome :)

Help🧠 What do Poles call monthly fixed expenses in everyday speech? stałe opłaty, stałe wydatki, or just rachunki?

I'm trying to learn the natural way to talk about the money that leaves every month: czynsz, prąd, internet, phone, subscriptions, insurance.

I've seen "stałe opłaty", "opłaty stałe", "stałe wydatki" and "koszty stałe", but I'm not sure which one people actually say, or whether everyone just says "rachunki".

Is word order important here (stałe opłaty vs opłaty stałe)? And if you kept a list of these in a notebook or spreadsheet, what would you title it?

Dziękuję!

Update: dziękuję, everyone. This thread was gold.

Some context on why I asked: I'm a solo dev with a small app for keeping track of the bills and subscriptions that leave every month. It's been in 6 languages, and this week I added Polish, Italian and Portuguese. I didn't want the Polish version to sound like a translated accounting textbook, so I asked real people instead.

What I went with:

  • stałe opłaty for the whole bucket
  • płatność for a single item
  • zapłacone once it's paid

I kept rachunki out of it, because as a few of you explained ("Idę zapłacić rachunki"), it's really the utilities, not Netflix or a loan. And "opłacę życie na ten miesiąc" is now my favourite Polish sentence.

Help🧠 Is it possible to learn polish at home with a polish partner?

Hello everyone, I just started studying polish myself but i couldn’t find that many resources online especially on youtube. All of them were mostly starter levels and mostly related to listening. Now I am kinda concerned and I am not sure if I should hire a tutor. I have a polish partner so I kinda trust them to teach me and help me talk. Is there anyone that learned polish by themselves like this? I wanna live on Poland in the future with my partner so I am waiting for your suggestions!!

Request for audio deciphering

I'm watching the second season of Polish "The Traitors" and really need help with this specific segment. The woman is whispering, there are no subtitles, and no AI tool can identify the words. Could anyone listen to this and transcribe the 2 short sentences and one longer sentence at the end? Thank you very much for your help!
