I spent 6 months turning population dynamics & stability matrices into a touch-based strategy simulation game!

• Upvotes

Hey everyone! I spent the last 6 months (around 2–3 hours a day) carefully designing a game centered around mathematical ecosystem modeling, covering population growth, resource limits, species interaction rules, and equilibrium.

As a mathematician working as a solo developer, I used AI tools to assist with coding speed and generate art assets so I could focus primarily on the mathematical design and balance.

Unfortunately, posting in general gaming subreddits got a lot of pushback solely based on the visual style before anyone looked at the actual mechanics. I wanted to share it here with fellow math enthusiasts who appreciate the dynamical systems under the hood!

I’d love to hear your thoughts on gamifying population models or any feedback on the underlying mechanics!

How to Prove it by Velleman

Hi guys, I've been reading and answering exercises in the book for sometime now. I have a quick question here: How long would it take to complete the entire book ithrough self-learning if I were to skip no section (maybe around 1.5 hours per day)?

Thanks for any response!

understanding multi-variable calculus

this probably has been asked in this sub some time, but I'd really like some advice on understanding why some things in multi variable calculus work. Especially partial derivatives and integrals. Back in single I struggled a lot with even understanding the fundamental theorem of calculus. It was one of those situations where I kinda understood the explanation but I would never be able to explain it in my own words. Now its even worse in multi. I'm able to solve the problems but I dont understand what im doing at all. I'd prefer to have some super visual examples. I find that its most helpful if I see what happens. I tried to look into many videos on double/triple integrals, but those just end up confusing me more. They kinda see the integrals happening at the same time, but I can only see it in a way where one happens then the other one happens.

How important or relevant is competitive math to being a "good" mathematician/problem solver

After giving numerous mathematical Olympiads, I've kinda realized..im not into them. I get how people would like solving numerous problems under strict time constraints, and how ranks, qualifications, and the stages of IMO are easy to glorify/advertise and be considered a scale for your competence, but I always felt more drawn to the more..open problems.

To elaborate, I would much rather take my time and spend hours, weeks, even months on one problem that would make any amount of impact in the world, even if nobody reads my paper or results, than to solve 30-50 problems under 3 hours that seemingly are irrelevant to society. The country I come from (India) has a tendency to award the latter, and being bad at it really takes a hit on my self perception and intelligence when it comes to this subject.

I like maths, I really do, but why does that always have to correlate to some rank or Olympiad to crack? Can I become a good problem solver even without delving into competitive maths?

How do you deal with math anxiety?

Basically, whenever I learn a new topic I get OCD about the steps of derivation of a particular result. I just can't seem to stop until I fully grasp the concept. Even when I do, I have a feeling that I forgot something crucial and therefore looking for some "hidden" step in the logic.

That's why sometimes my study sessions might last for 5+ hours... Idk if that's normal. I just get obsessed whenever I don't understand something

Is it common?

how to prove it

n root

I need to rigorously prove that this sequence of $N$ square roots is monotonically increasing. I tried to argue that adding another square root of two doesn't decrease the value, but that’s not entirely accurate.

TOPIC Math open problem - Need Help

This is the problem, presented as a riddle:

Imagine a Quidditch match in which the Golden Snitch is completely invisible.
You know exactly the initial distance, but not the direction. You move faster than the Snitch, which moves at constant speed and always chooses the direction that takes it as far away from you as possible.
Is there a trajectory that allows you to catch the Snitch?

I've prepared a video to better explain the formalization of the problem. Can you help me solve it? I've already worked out a good part of the proof.

Preparing for College Algebra and Statistics with very little math skills?

I thought I could enter college statistics with no college algebra knowledge and it looks like im going to have to withdraw soon. I've held myself back long enough and i want to improve my life and restart my math knowledge from pre algebra. Is Khan academy the way to go? Im on it right now and I've used it as a kid, but im in my 20s know and I need to be adept in College algebra by January, I will give up distractions and dedicate 2 hours each day If necessary. I might have dyscalculia, usually even looking at the statistic equations makes me physically lose focus and get dizzy. I just short circuit when it comes to math, 4.0 student, sadly never had a good math foundation to begin with. Very depressed over this.

TOPIC Is projective geometry not deep enough to warrant its own courses?

I’ve been kind of fascinated by projective geometry since I first saw desargues’ theorem. Now I’m in a grad school with a pretty good math program and my degree has an elective slot. So I started looking for courses on projective geometry and there really aren’t any at all. There’s one undergraduate course called “geometric structures” that lists projective geometry among a few different topics that it goes into and that’s pretty much it. Otherwise, there are courses that just barely relate to it but nothing at all that focuses on PG.

Is is that rare for a school to offer dedicated courses on projective geometry? Is there that little to talk about?

Linear Algebra is Hard

I’m a Finance and Math major and I’m thinking of dropping math.

I’m taking linear algebra right now, it’s not hard per say, but I don’t understand the conceptual side of it.

Doing my first mid term I got a 80%, 13.3% of the grade lost was because of true/false. Out of 5 of them I got 1 correct. Span, R^n, 1 - 1, onto, and other concepts are hard for me. I have tried watching YT video including 3brown1blue and I still don’t understand.

I did went to my professor office hours and I still don’t understand it fully.

I enjoyed Calc 1, but it’s the easiest one and maybe I should drop math before I dig myself too deep.

But if I drop math I’ll be only a finance major and I still don’t know if I want to do finance for the rest of my life.

Yall think I should stay for another semester before dropping math to test the water? I’m a freshman btw.

Fractal Geometry beginning

Hello, I just attended a very short university course on fractal Geometry and found it fascinating. I don't attend university, I'm still in highschool, but I'd like to figure out a way to learn more about it without having to build my knowledge on stuff like analysis.

I'm relatively comfortable with set theory, decent at calculus, not amazing at geometry in general (I don't know the extent of geometry, Im only concerned with euclidian geometry we see in school, and I'm not into topology at all), and for the rest, I have a strong intuition on the whole scheme of things, so I can figure things out from context.

My question is how should I begin with studying this? I've seen books on it, but previews make me not want to read them for their extreme visual heaviness on the pages, I'm probably too used to highschool books which have a lot less heaviness.

Math Apps for Basics?

Hello! I’m sure this has been asked before but does anyone have any apps they would recommend for re-learning basic math? I am interested in aviation and at least to start it’s important to have a solid foundation in arithmetic, fractions, percentages, ratios, algebra and some practical geometry and trig.

I never had a strong foundation in math and that’s lead to years of feeling embarrassed and unskilled and I really want to know more/ be more confident in my abilities. Any suggestions welcome, thanks!

Alternatives to paper?

Hi everyone

I am using A LOOOT of paper to practice problems and solve things and just do math in general as a college student. I usually just throw my paper away as soon as it’s full.

What are some alternatives to paper I could use?

Thanks

Math apps

I’d like to get better at my math skills but have plenty of practice through high school math. I was wondering if there are apps for learning higher level maths like linear algebra, ODEs, real analysis etc OR apps with math themed logic puzzles that would help strengthen my proof based math (coming from a physics major who is looking to pivot to pure math)

How much math do I need before learning statistics?

Hi! I'm wondering which math classes I should take before before taking statistics? The basic minimum seems to be 1 semester of calculus but I've encountered programs that require up to 3 semesters of calc + linear algebra as pre-reqs and I'm not sure why this varies so much. I plan to take calc 1 in the spring and of course the fewer classes I have to pay for the better, but I don't want to jump into stats right after calc 1 and realize I'm not actually prepared for it.

I have a background in information science and libraries and hope to become a research librarian, for which having some qualification in stats or data science is ideal. I took one research methods class that covered basic descriptive statistics for my MLIS but I'd like to do more. Thank you for your help!

Why does a parabola have 1 scale factor but hyperbolas have 2?

Parabolas are A(x-h)^2 + k. Hyperbolas are A(x-h)^2 + B(y-k)^2 = 1 where A xor B is negative.

Both parabolas and hyperbolas are determined by center (h,k). But why can hyperbolas be defined by A and B but parabolas can only be defined by A? Why is a second scale factor redudant for parabolas but not for hyperbolas?

How do other people read and understand numbers?

I need to resit my maths A-level after I got a C instead of the B I needed for university. Apart from needing to unlearn the tearing up reaction I get from looking at a paper, I realised I don't really keep numbers in my head the same way I do for words and spellings. It feels like I need everything written out in front of me and connect them on the page, while most of my high-achieving friends can just think through the problems and use the calculator as a tool instead of a brain... if that makes any sense at all. It means that I tend to run out of time for questions quickly because I'm writing everything down, and sometimes it doesn't even help as I forget where I am in the steps and get confused.

So how do you all remember what you're doing? Is it really just a memory thing? I've been doing maths for all the time I've been in school for and it feels like I just haven't been getting any better at it in a mental sense. I got an 8 (A* equivalent) in GCSE and my performance has just been dropping since then as everything grew harder (granted bad teachers and terrible work environment didn't make it any easier). Most frustrating thing is I'm never going to use this maths again as all I want to do is genetics and statistics is only a quarter of this entire qualification (and I'm good at statistics!!)

So my question is just how do you think about numbers and manipulate them in your head? Is there something obvious I'm missing?
