I'm a Chinese native speaker. I spent 2 years writing HSK stories because I was frustrated with poor quality graded readers.
Hi everyone,
I'm a Chinese native speaker. My friends constantly ask me if the Chinese workbooks or reading books they bought are authentic. Sadly, most of the time I'm surprised by how poorly written the content is and how confusing the layout is. Sometimes, HSK Level 1 and 2 graded reading materials contain characters I've only seen a few times in my whole life.
So out of curiosity, I browsed Chinese reading books on Amazon for hours, comparing content, audio quality, and reviews. I found that many 4.5-star reading books for HSK 1–2 aren't even written in smooth sentences and have robotic audio with monotone delivery and incorrect segmentation.
Then I thought: I can do better to help people who want to learn Chinese.
I spent almost 2 years writing over 30 stories and doing a lot of editing to select 19 stories I believe a beginner can read through. And I'll be honest with you: by "beginner," I mean someone who has dominated HSK 1 and 2 vocabulary and has started HSK 3. It's impossible to write a full story using only HSK Level 1 vocabulary. You can only write short, awkward conversations, which I found in the majority of HSK 1–2 reading materials.
I also created audio in two speeds to help different levels of learners practice listening and speaking. I hope my books can provide beginner learners with quality reading content, cultural tips, and a taste of modern Chinese.
The book series is called Two Pathways to Chinese. There are two books in this series:
- Chinese Short Stories in Easy & Hard Mode for HSK Learners Vol 1 (10 stories)
- Chinese Short Stories in Easy & Hard Mode for HSK Learners Vol 2 (9 stories)
Both books are in Easy & Hard Mode, suitable for all levels, and contain:
- Comprehension questions to test your understanding of key details and the plot
- HSK 3 and 4 vocabulary tables listed alphabetically for easy review
- Helpful tips in selected stories to connect language learning with real-world context
- Beyond-HSK words presented in footnotes for quick reference and a dictionary-free reading experience
- Free audio included with both slow and normal speed options for listening practice
Please note: The books are not free. The audio is free.

I'd love feedback from other learners. If you'd like, you can also leave a review, but please don't feel any obligation.
Thank you for reading.
Best regards,
