Classic League Classic needed the S3-S6 champions more than it needed the S1 experience

Most people were not asking to go all the way back so S1.

They wanted the versions of League they actually spent years playing:old Swain draining a fight, old Udyr running at people with four stances, old Graves playing like a short-range bruiser.

A Classic queue misses the point if the champion you came back for is not even in the roster

Would you rather have one stable S3-S6-style patch built around heavily reworked champions, or rotating patches with the full roster from each era?

I think releasing with a fuller classic roster rather than drip feeding would’ve been a good start. So many pre-rework champions were missing, so what was the point?

113

u/Kingnewgameplus 14h ago

Not just that, but a lot of the champs that were there were either barely changed compared to live, like Lulu or Leona, or just objectively worse than their live version. I love Lux, I could play Lux for the rest of my life, but why would I play a version of Lux that has slashed ratios across the board, higher mana costs, and missing QoL like being unable to reactivate E during your ult cast?

70

u/CSDragon I like Assassin ADCs 12h ago

Because those ones are free to add.

The choice wasn't "Lux or Yorik" it was "Lux or nothing because adding Lux to Classic took a single dev a couple hours to get right"

17

u/ButtonDelicious4450 8h ago

I mean yes, that's the point. They artificially inflated the number of champions available in classic by including those which have barely changed from modern league. 60 champions? More like 30 classic champs with 30 that we've tacked on because they're more or less the same as they are now

It's a testament to how little effort they put in, or what they thought they'd get away with and that we'd accept, it shows how completely out of touch they are with their playerbase at the moment - in some areas. Riot isn't always bad but they're getting more wrong than they are right, lately.

u/GabrielP2r Sword Guy 8h ago

Don't forget the new models tacked on old kits

3

u/CSDragon I like Assassin ADCs 3h ago

It's not artificial. The point of the game is to play League like it was in Season 3*. They were in the game then, they should be in the game no matter what.

Classic was NOT supposed to be a showroom for removed content.

(* should have been Season 1, but whatever)

u/Missing42 nice kit bro, think i'll take it 14h ago

Most champions available on release never had full reworks. On top of that, the game didn't even have its own client, but a cheap-looking derivative in the modern League client (let's not underestimate how big of a factor that might be; a casual could reasonably assume it's just a temporary game mode). And on top of that you have the botched terrain textures, missing visual assets, the skin debacle, having to grin for runes again, etc.
League Classic was always gonna be a niche product, but it's hardly a surprise it died with the state they released it in. Maybe it would've died either way, sure, but whoever managed this clearly fucked up.

2

u/Leows 9h ago

Yeah, the catch here is that we can't know whether or not it would've died if it were better managed.

However, we can know for SURE that it would've lasted longer if it were. Because this was surrounded by drama even before it launched, and they barely made an effort to fix stuff the community pointed out.

18

u/Suspicious-Tea9161 15h ago

Somehow, they didn't even have the data to bring those all back. They had to scour old videos and posts from external sources to find some information for it

64

u/kingocd AP Pantheon Main 15h ago

They didn’t have it my ass.

21

u/amicaze April Fools Day 2018 14h ago

As an old dev if Chronoshift said : Riot has it all, because they themselves had it all.

19

u/Suspicious-Tea9161 15h ago

Yeah it was probably just mismanaged the data and couldn't find it. I don't buy it either. The only thing I can realistically see them getting from videos is numbers. It's not like they publish the numbers in patch notes... That would be dumb.

26

u/OrangePeelPotatoes 14h ago

Phreak literally said he had a Season 3 Worlds patch running. What Riot is saying isnt adding up. They clearly had the champions in some form on Phreak's PC.

5

u/kingocd AP Pantheon Main 13h ago

They lyin

4

u/neogeoman123 a massive douche 12h ago

I just... yall know that even if they did have the original code or assets, they cant just reimplement it, right?

The game's front and backend has been fully ship of theseused like 5 times at this point; a champions code and assets from season 3 is fundamentally incompatible with how modern league works on a technical level, so each of them has to be updated individually. Why do you think we almost only got the champions that were basically unchanged from back then? Because they actually had them in working condition. Everything else has to basically be built from scratch.

6

u/Suspicious-Tea9161 12h ago

I never said anything about that not being an issue. Ofc you gotta work the code in somehow and that's not a menial task, but them claiming that they didn't have data to begin with and having to collect it externally is an entirely different issue from figuring out how to implement old code in a new system

3

u/AlternativeAward 8h ago

False. Phreak in one of the first league classic yt vids stated verbatim that he used a s3 patch version of the game for his tests

2

u/FennecFoxx 7h ago

Pretty sure they are miss quoting him on him needing to go check other sources for one thing. But yes he has talked about many times bringing up the old game and using it to double check tons of different kits.

3

u/asleepywitchh 11h ago

Then don't release the fucking game if its not finished

You have the option now. Does the mode gain more players? You get free runes, a lot of the old roster. Yet people are not swarming in. These are excuses of the people that want to say classic could have been good, but the truth is, league today is what it is because it got rid of many of these things over time or it would have died because of other games take the players away. Nobody wants to play a S1 jungler or a S5 support today.

1

u/rocketgrunt89 10h ago

$ on the nostalgia

0

u/bkgn 10h ago

The drip feed was because they didn't have the money to implement the champions. And in retrospect it's good that they didn't blow any more money on it, since the mode failed. Kind of a chicken-and-egg problem.

16

u/Merpninja 10h ago

Is it really the chicken and the egg if it’s the same problem that killed 2KO? Riot spent infinite money on that shit and had a godawful roster on launch. Clearly it’s a pattern of prioritizing the wrong thing.

2

u/blublub1243 4h ago

In retrospect it's bad that they spent any money on it. Spending less on something in a manner that'll absolutely ensure its failure is just dumb, either spend the money needed to give it a chance at success or don't spend the money at all.

League Classic is the gameplay version of the "we need more ugly/monster champions" complaints.

Riot will do one, it'll have a lukewarm reception, and then a ton of people will scream, "NOT LIKE THAT" and go right back to stomping their feet.

•

u/RollerCoasterMatt 1h ago

Classic has less champions than Season 1 did. Is it that outrageous to ask that they have at least the BASE roster???

→ More replies (1)

8

u/kuburas 8h ago

I dont think its the entire problem but its definitely a big part of it.

Just taking myself as an example, for me season 3-4 is the beginning of "newer" league. Season 6 is already modern league for me. Season 1-3 is where my nostalgia lies as someone who started playing sometime in beta.

But i think a bigger problem is that there simply isnt that big of an audience for classic league. Im willing to bet that vast majority of current league players started playing after season 5-6, theres very few players who started playing before season 6 that are still following league.

2

u/BannanDylan 11h ago

I don't think the amalgamation was a bad thing, but I've waited 3 months just to play Yorick and there are still champions that haven't been announced yet

If they released the game with all of the champions who's kit hadn't really changed and then weekly released old champs it would have been better

4

u/Doctursea 12h ago

The problem is more they didn’t commit to anything. Having it be “best of” means like 90% the cast is almost unplayable when compared to the top of their role.

the only thing asol kept was his e, riot unironically thought his e was the most important thing to keep, not his balls or his lane wide q, the fucking straight dash

45

Well the whole rework happened in order to get rid of the balls centric playstyle which was insanely unpopular so I'm not surprised they decided not to keep them. I think they tried to keep the lane wide q fantasy with his new empowered ult but he's basically a different champ anyways.

9

u/Solo_Jawn 13h ago

And he's still one of the lowest play rate mid laners...

Is there another champion that did more of a 180 after their rework? Asol went from a early/mid game roamer that was heavy on good movement, into a scaling turret.

I call bs on every post on classic.

Just like WoW, it had to be a snapshot of an old season and not this mashed together brown soup. It needed all the features of the selected patch - ranked queue, only old skins, the mastery and rune system of that patch and maybe even twisted treeline.

They just created a random game mode - not classic.

28

u/whateverdsntmatter 12h ago

Classic means something different to everybody. It's so hard to even get this right because to some people classic is S1-3 and to others it goes up to s6. I feel like people thought this was going to turn out into OSRS, but it just didn't have the same appeal. Im an older player from s2 and I could care less for any sort of classic content. People get so heated in here, but in the end the game mode is not popular.

2

u/Awkward-Security7895 5h ago

Ye like you couldn't make a decent chunk happy.

Classic fine for the old champ kits to play a few games off or to play with some old items but not much else.

Heck classic felt even slower items wise from back then in terms of gold gen but when snowballing felt harder because of modern day knowledge.

Like a big part is modern day knowledge different changes how classic plays by default.

3

u/BeyondlegendZ 11h ago

Lol I don't even understand why people want classic, god forbid them trying lane against a fizz or ap nidaleee back in the day. Go top and get your ass handed by darius riven and renekton or be ward bot as support, or accidently getting you jungle buff stolen by a fail leash or getting invaded and enemy leaving on small add left so your junglr doesn't respawn.

Man these classic lover clearly haven't actually played old league rank and mostly likely only remember the few good games they had leveling or mostly likely some dumb riot hater larping

4

u/relinquisshed 10h ago

WoW survives because of the monthly subscription however, while League makes money via skins. LoL Classic probably made very little money so that's the problem. I bought the pass but I bet 95% of people didn't. But I don't know why that bothers Riot so much, it was being developed by like 5 people anyway. It's not like they had some massive budget for it

1

u/Awkward-Security7895 5h ago

Because to riot and many companies every part has to be self sufficient and not being stood up by a different part of the company.

Making something that just bleeds money is how companies death spiral. Like just league classic would be fine but if they did multiple things that all just bled money then it starts to add up rapidly.

8

u/Superb_Bench9902 Casual enjoyer 13h ago

That was our take with friends. We played 3 games. We all have been playing since season 1 or 2. It didn't feel like any of the old seasons for us. We never queued up for another game of classic afterwards. You know what's funny? There was a private version of classic a few years back. Riot took it down pretty fast tho

2

u/SeismologicalKnobble 5h ago

Yeah people in this thread can’t even agree on what “classic” means. I saw a guy complaining that Lux doesn’t have her modern QoL stuff in classic and another complaining the same with MF. They want to play in classic but with modern QoL. That doesn’t make sense.

u/batatapou goth mommy 15h ago

The community traded half a year of no content for this, we got no champions, no reworks, no lore, no mid season, they will never accept League classic was a stupid idea and that riot just bought time in the waiting room for the new engine

29

u/cthslax 14h ago

No we traded a year of no content for "league next" which was originally supposed to the payoff to "season 2025 is going to be the biggest year in league yet" but they postponed it because they couldnt finish it. Then they were supposed to show a nearly completed league next at msi 2026 and when they weren't ready scrambled to turn the this passion project into something releasable to avoid backlash over next being delayed. And they promised that same almost ready deep dive on league next for worlds then they said "well actually its going to be a small update on progress, we have nothing to show for the 2 years we've worked on this project"

2

u/batatapou goth mommy 14h ago

I heard that it will be ready in july 2027 but at this point i am sure it was all vibe coded and will be as unplayable as the TFT engine

2

They never said a release date just that we would get a update later in the year.

People jumped to that meaning it would be out start of next year.

It only got revealed so early because of a big bad bear leak

1

u/cthslax 5h ago

They havent announced a date but even if they did that means nothing. What few things they promised this year have all been delayed indefinitely. We were supposed to have tft fully removed from the client on the 6th and now theyre saying the 3rd...

LoL Classic took a very small team of Devs away from prod. So small the project lead was in the weeds doing champ creation himself. Classic is not the reason League was dead this year.

4

u/Jekarti 15h ago

WoW classic is a third of WoW's playerbase. Starcraft 2 buried and still buries 99% of RTSs released. Heck, Superheroes are mostly 70 years old and they're ones of the most profitable films.

Riot mismanaged the classic version, wayy too few characters, not a clear enough vision : anachronistic kits, anachronistic items (e.g. : 4 different Jungle seasons item path) modern skins that look out of place and no classic skins, a useless grind for runes. Debatable balance choices such as pre-nerfing Kassadin to the ground, to the point where they actually buffed him, while picks like Tryndamere and Warwick needed several big nerfs to become not broken.

Matchmaking was wayy to slow to adapt, we bullied noobs with my group for dozens of game straight until we got actual competition.

Problem is now you can't make a second first impression.

Yeah imo a S3-S4 patch would've been great.

Look at the success of OSRS. They launched in at 07 (and have made a fuck ton of updates since then). If they launched OSRS as the 2004 version of the game it would have been dead on arrival

8

u/Doyoulike4 16h ago

I mean to be fair yeah comparing game timelines, counting RS from RS2 launch not RSC, it's equivalent of S3 LoL would be 2007, and the plan for Classic was to get all champions from launch day through end of 2013/Season 3. I think long term there could've been talk on maybe picking and choosing a few S4/S5/S6 champions that could fit into a more "Classic League Style", Vel Koz comes to mind.

But it launched with only 60, and a lot of that 60 being ones that were easy to implement because they weren't too far off from live and was missing a ton of iconic early year champions. I don't think anybody was clamoring to play like 2012/2013 J4 when his 2026 kit is barely different. Lee Sin I'll mildly bat that his numbers were obscene then and it's using his old voice so there is some appeal to playing that version of him, so even if same kit mechanically it is a bit different of a vibe.

1

u/Awkward-Security7895 5h ago

Hey 2012 j4 had armour flag and single target undodgable ult damage. Was kinda different.

Overall I get ya even if they were different back then its the same play pattern just usually worse.

2

u/Significant-Map-2815 14h ago

You cant compare an MMO to a moba

The reason wow and osrs classic had so much success was because they completely changed the world fundamentally and the game plays very differently (in wow at least) compared to retail

League is still the exact same system with 3 lanes, 1 jungle, 1 support.

It fundamentally cant really work in the same way as the others did

u/Static-Chicken 14h ago

Whats really frustrating about this discussion is just how disingenuous most of the people here are.

Riot said they were release league classic, but they did not. Half the champions that were in the game at that time aren't in, the itemization is all screwed up, on top of other things. Half the people here will say "yeah will no one played x champion so why would riot put effort into putting it in the game?" Then turn around and say things like "See? Classic was never good and you are an idiot for wanting classic."

Buddy. I only came back to play classic swain. I dont care if I was the only person playing him, he came out before half the champs they put in classic.

Lets tell the truth. Riot half assed classic, got people to buy cosmetics for a game they planned to close, and now they can say I told you so and wash their hands of what could've been a solid game mode.

13

u/Y4naro 13h ago

Riot said they were release league classic, but they did not.

People like to pretend that this wasn't called out close to classic release, but there were a lot of posts and comments complaining about it being a weird version of league that is closer to classic, but also something that never existed.

As we can see here, they actively wanted to balance classic to be shorter than games back then used to be. This might make it more enjoyable (than actual classic) to most people, but also differentiates it less from current league so it never had a fair shot to actually find a core audience.

I feel like they failed to understand that the main reason to play classic over normal league is for the old kits/items, longer games and resources like mana or cooldowns mattering more during laning. But if a decent amount of that is missing or it's impact being softened then you just get something that very few people think is different enough to choose it over current league or other games.

5

u/Complete_Proof1616 11h ago

Man, I never saw that before. Wanting Classic games to be quicker is wanting for Classic to not exist because short games = not classic. Grueling 50-60 minute games being the norm was classic. And i loved it

u/ecoreck not even a GOOD one-trick 15h ago

Unless I'm misremembering, Yorick and Aatrox were absolutely despised and had little to no play with the exception of Aatrox like a patch before his rework due to the new items greatly benefiting him.

u/amicaze April Fools Day 2018 14h ago

They weren't a staple of toplane but they weren't "hated" xd

Speaking of staple, where were Renekton and Shyvana ?

2

u/ClassroomWrong2161 14h ago

Still some people mained them.

Riot did not try to balance aatrox, the moment he was playable they nerfed him and said fuck it, and reworked him so what could we even do lol

2

u/ChibiJr ^^; 14h ago edited 14h ago

Literally no one played either and generally had no opinion on either champion because they never saw them in game. I'm sure some people hated them, but largely people just forgot they existed. People absolutely despised Aatrox for a long time after his rework tho because of how ridiculously overturned and overloaded he was for years after.

What you crave is a distant childhood memory embeded with nostalgia. It doesn't actually exist.

10

u/Advokatten 13h ago

You know people said the exact same thing for wow classic

3

u/buttsecksgoose 12h ago

Except wow is a completely different game

3

u/Awkward-Security7895 5h ago

Ye people forget that wow gameplay etc changed massive over the years.

League on the other hand is the same gameplay loop just players are better now.

2

u/LushieTilde 9h ago

Except tons of people are reliving their childhood memory with older games just fine. I'm not even talking about stuff like WoW Classic, but old games in general. There is a reason a lot of companies are just rereleasing old games with minimal if any changes nowdays.

League Classic did not feel like old League, look like old League, play like old League, sound like old League. It was missing more than half the champions from that time period (S3 ended with 118 champions), had random features from future seasons that weren't there before like trinkets and base gates. Post rework models and modern skins. Etc.

There are aspects of old PvP games that can never be replicated nowdays(as people "tryhard" way more now, for the lack of a better word). But that's not the reason League Classic died so fast.

0

u/ChromosomeDonator 12h ago

This has the same exact tone as "you think you do, but you don't", which is perhaps one of the worst statements ever uttered in gaming and proven to be as wrong as humanly possible.

A big portion of people wanting Classic were not kids during Season 3, which was the supposed timestamp. You're telling some people who were 20 years old at the time that they are chasing "childhood nostalgia".

Please understand that you're wrong. I know it's hard to entertain that idea, but at least try.

I missed the feeling of new champs coming out regularly and causing balance waves, but I also had a kid this summer so haven't been able to lock in for a 30+ minute game :/

7

u/CT4nk3r the devil shrooms 14h ago

"S1 experience", like the trinkets and base gates? They created a weird Frankenstein of different era stuff mashed together. Would have kinda worked but there way too few champs who actually got massive reworks

5

u/SillyOyx 8h ago

I’ve said it before elsewhere but I believe they had two options and they did the worst of both.

They could do an actual “best of league” experience on a s5-6 map with all of the most nostalgic, player favored kits and items. For example, 2016 Ryze, old Asol, kayle with true damage, etc. and balance them to be a little less obnoxious like they did with classic. That could have been fun and I would have played the shit out of it. I’ve always wanted to try old Asol and just reading that community subreddit will tell you that there is a vocal amount of players who want to try it. As a 600k mastery ryze player I would kill to play 2016 Ryze. I would also love to try old kayle with true damage. That could have been very fun and a good experiment.

They could have also just done old league. They have a worlds s3 patch of the game according to phreak but they didn’t do that at all.

Instead they did a horrible combination of both concepts that pleased no one.

2

u/AlternativeAward 8h ago

Season 3 worlds patch was always the consensus pick.

Old enough to be classic but still playable and from the days when the game was already played all over the world unlike s1.

And no yasuo (he was like 1-2 patches after s3 worlds btw)

2

u/Comfortable-Dig-6118 5h ago

The main issue was that they got the worst version of the game season 1 had many problems, they should have just started from season4 or 5 where the game already did all the necessary adjustments

7

u/SuperKalkorat 11h ago

The main issue is the long term audience just didn't exist, it was a mirage from all the constant bitching from boomers (said as someone who started ~s1-s2) who are either perpetually angry because they aren't young anymore or quit the game years ago with no intention of coming back even for classic but still come here to bitch for the sake of it. From the get go people were just looking for a reason to quit or never play, picking the most asinine reasons possible so that it would effectively never pass the full purity test. People have all different ideas of classic from beta to season 6 and most aren't focused on single patches but certain memorable builds or kits that did not exist all at the same time, so people were never going to be satisfied no matter what. Its either an amalgamation of various points of history and you'll hear "WAAAHH WAAAAH ITS NOT REAL CLASSIC!! I REFUSE TO PLAY!!" or it actually is a faithful recreation of a certain patch and you'll hear "WAAAH WAAAH THE KIT/BUILD I WANTED ISN'T HERE!!! I REFUSE TO PLAY!!"

The largest chunk of the playerbase would just be people wanting to play old versions again or see what they were like back then, but that is not a stable playerbase and most would quit within a week of getting their fix. Riot's biggest mistake was thinking that there was a real, sizable permanent playerbase itching for the mode and announcing it as permanent. Should have just started as an extended alternative game mode and waited before announcing anything bigger regarding the mode.

2

u/BeyondlegendZ 7h ago

My theory It's either larpers who never played in those season or legit hardstuck going through league withdrawal symptoms and believing they could carry if they could just go back instead of not getting roflstomp by enemy fizz ap nidalee silence kassidin and all the bullshit riot had to nerf over the years

4

u/Chrismite 16h ago

S3-6 was peak league of legends

6

u/mking_1999 16h ago

old Udyr running at people with four stances

The hell does he do now??? Are people actually unironically saying Udyr's rework is appreciably different from how he was before???

28

u/EasterTroll 15h ago

This commenter has never double tiger stanced at level 2 for a cheese kill and it shows

1

u/Knifferoo 10h ago

Don't forget the ad pot as well. I was accused of hacking once after chunking a Riven like crazy level 1 by camping bush and being able to Q back to back.

1

u/EasterTroll 9h ago

double q invade at level two was a guaranteed kill every time for me that shit was gnarly if you get em while theyre doin the buff. Going top udyr with fort pot was nasty too but you could get kited so bad against some champs

1

u/Callzo 9h ago

This was how I first came across Trick2G lol, I will always remember him just playing top lane Udyr and invading the enemy jungler lvl 1, killing them, taking their buff, then killing his laner 😂 red pot start, loads of health pots was such an op start lol, great times.

As someone who has nearly 3 million points and hundres of game before the mastery system was introduced, let me give my 2 cents.
I find both Nudyr and Oldyr enjoyable. My favorite champ in the game BY FAR. The issue is, Udyr sometimes lags behind other modern champs. In some metas it is more noticable. There are many modern champs that just counter Udyr's entire kit without actively trying. With Oldyr, this issue was 100x worse. That's why I yearned to play Oldyr in classic. Simple kit in a simpler, more macro oriented game

2

u/Plus_Lawfulness3000 11h ago

I absolutely miss old udyr. Playstyle is similar but some things are gone for sure

2

u/GabrielP2r Sword Guy 7h ago

It's a lot different and old Udyr was more fun, at least for me.

2

u/throwaway52826536837 12h ago

New udyr feels unbelievably clunky compared to high cdr old udyr

3

u/ChibiJr ^^; 14h ago

Appreciably more boring. Old Udyr was more fun to play. New Udyr fixed nothing except that he runs slower. No one plays him still.

1

u/mp4skull 4h ago

People want udyr easier and faster. The old play style was mashy and more boring but they had fun because running away was funny and tilting the opponents. My friend was a otp udyr main and more honest than the comments here lol.

2

u/Ceade 16h ago

I'm going to be real if yasuo was in classic i would not have touched it at all, not a single game

4

u/Jandromon ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 11h ago

Why does everyone on reddit know exactly what was needed for Classic to succeed? You know it's possible for something to be doomed to fizzle out eventually, right?

Maybe, just maybe, the mode was always gonna be a temporary nostalgia crash and its players would return to modern league because... it's x10 better. Which they could never admit because their lives have revolved around shitting on Riot for 13 years.

Maybe, just maybe, the players that glaze 2013 are blinded by nostalgia and have no clue what good design is. And now they're unsatisfied with their memories not being accurate, so they blame it on Classic's execution being poor because it didn't match their exact personal preference.

Ridiculous neckbearding going on in these threads.

•

u/abecadarian 1h ago

Your comment is ironic because you have the exact same know-it-all tone that everyone else does

1

u/No_Chip_3780 3h ago

Don't look at /r/leagueclassic then lol

3

u/Soggy-Breadfruit4863 15h ago

That's what they said before classic became a thing too. They want the old AP Master Yi, they want the pre-reworked Katarina etc etc. Game came out, nostalgia kicks in 1 month later people realised how bad old league was and moved on. It's the same for what you're asking, old swain draining a fight, old udyr, people will play for a month, people realise old league sucks and move on.

-1

u/derteava 15h ago

lool no. People quit early because it was a dog shit half baked hybrid of classic and zoomer league, appealing to nobody. Zoomers like you wouldn't like it and call it nostalgia no matter what, so they needed to appeal to actual old school players which they certainly did not.

7

u/ZealousidealWeb9930 14h ago

what part was zoomer league aside from trinkets?

2

u/Awkward-Security7895 5h ago

Even the trinkets were only added from old heads voting for them to be added.

So it's like there attacking what players voted for as well.

•

u/DargonKingu 1h ago

Homeguards, base gates, baron buff, minion and tower changes. They fucked up way too many things by turning them modern.

5

u/sornorth 14h ago

lol I’ve been playing league since season 1 and it has nothing to do with ‘zoomer’ mentality. Games in the first 3 seasons were farming until a single team fight ended the game. Balance was terrible, abilities were more janky than people remember and item paths were super one dimensional. Sure it was fun to see the old stuff again and have a small nostalgia trip, but modern league is a lot better than it was.

4

u/kamacho2000 14h ago

I wanted to play Graves/Irelia one only came out 2 months after classic while the other didnt even get rereleased

6

u/Owlbearcatfish 13h ago

Both are in. Irelia was added last patch, Graves the one before that

2

u/AutomaticTune6352 3h ago

Both are in. If you wanted to paly them you can. One even for like 4 weeks already the other one for 1-2 weeks.

Why aren't you playing? Because in the end it wasn't that important to you.

Biggest mistake they made was mixing different aspects of old league together trying to get the most wanted aspects in one. It would've been much better if they just released old patches 1 to 1 to how it was back then and then just rotated through the seasons every few months. Like for a few months it would just be season 6 with everything available at that time, then it would be season 2 for a few months and everything that came after would just be cut until they advance to the next patch cycle.

2

u/emmittgator 16h ago

I got excited to play classic so I could play old swain again. I lost interest when he wasn't included. I played a couple games but it wasn't enough. I didn't have a strong connection to most of the old champs.

1

u/CountMordrek 16h ago

Old classic needed the mayhem that pre-reworked heroes and items was…

1

u/Jigglebox 14h ago

Godyr... :( ik everyone but Godyr players hated the play style... but it was fun

1

u/HeroponEgil 14h ago

I prefer it as it is, with hopefully more champs put in. Specifically the ones that received VGU, these are the ones that I wanted to play the most. A snapshot from a patch misses the point, it has a fixed meta and cannot get updated without changing the patch. Also, if it is from S4 onwards, champions like Sion get lost as he received his VGU pretty early. I still want my Swain back, and I played him a lot before his rework, but I can work with the approach classic took.

1

u/theanneproject 13h ago

That was the peak seasons.

1

u/TioAuditore 13h ago

I'd rather have the 3vs3 map

1

u/graybloodd 13h ago

S3-s6 are two completely different games even when you describe graves youre describing s3 graves and s6 graves where he was completely different

1

u/Dabottle 12h ago

Fuck yeah we're like two weeks of theorycrafting away from saying it died because it didn't have Yuumi

1

u/aspookyshark 11h ago

Even if all the champions people wanted were in classic, how many games would they actually play before they had their fill of the gimmick and go back to playing modern league? Most of the reworked champions were reworked for good reason.

1

u/TheRealRaxorX 11h ago

Just going say several champs that did release in s1 and s2 were not originally included. That time there was a new champ every two weeks.

1

u/Horror-Jellyfish-285 10h ago

lack of ranked truly killed it, nothing else.

1

u/savagedcraft 10h ago

I just wanted the pre reworked champs in modern SR. Think they still can do it on a rotating basis I hope

1

u/kebablover12 10h ago

A real shame they never got around to adding old Talon

1

u/theyeshman if fearless has no haters I am dead 10h ago

The only thing I miss about previous versions of league enough to go back and play more than a few games is old Asol. Either the toggle or the weird in-between version, I loved the unique kiting style of the balls so much. Inb4 someone tells me I didn't play him because nobody played him despite my hundreds of asol games a season until the hideous rework

1

u/UngaInstinct 9h ago

Your post lists a bunch of stuff from S1 though?

1

u/dropthemagic 9h ago

I only play vel koz. I am not interested in a game I can't play him in

1

u/JacobConnellyTV 9h ago

I really wanted to play the akali with dashes and e is spin

1

u/Sewer_god2 9h ago

since when was season 6 classic? All classic needed was ranked solo/duo and all the champions. The season or patch its based off doesn't matter. Classic will never be that popular unless there's actual ranked.

1

u/Ke-Win 9h ago

Yeah i totally agree. I started the end of S3.
And the current classic still feels ancient for me.

1

u/HawksBurst Sweet Dreams, Dominion 9h ago

I think it needed champions.

1

u/surv1vor69 8h ago

Since they are gonna make it a once -twice a year event why they don't get the game exactly as it was in season 2 for 1 week with a random patch, after 3 months a random patch from season 4, after 3 months a random patch from season 5 ( I want old reksai plz). And let the players decide if they truly want the old lol or it's just nostalgy.

1

u/articpencil 8h ago

Yea you right the average Season 1 player probably hasn’t played a video game in years.

1

u/supremetoastoverlord 8h ago

I was literally waiting for swain before I hopped in. Not happening i guess

1

u/rarbgboi123 8h ago

more like s1-5. S6 is when the league became more like the league is today.

1

u/b100darrowz 6h ago

I would have loved some point in season 5 before the juggernaught patches or season 3 after league of cleavers.

1

u/Hubiektyw 5h ago

Fuck no

1

u/Ok_Guarantee_3370 3h ago

I just can't believe how many boring same as current kits they put out, while holding back on so many good ones.

Looking at the pool now it is a lot better, I spent 30 mins in queue yesterday wanting to play old irelia but couldn't find a game. But on release you had what, pantheon, tf, Evelynn and sion, the rest were barely different.

1

u/AutomaticTune6352 2h ago

People are coming up with excuses why classic failed and that another version would have succeeded.

One part says "we needed S1 back" another grp says "we needed S6 champs and gameplay" and the next "s3 would have been perfect".

I tell you they all suck compared to modern league.

1

u/parrycarry r/FioraMains & r/Gwen Mod 2h ago

Old versions of champions versus new versions... legit just classic map, classic baron, classic dragon, classic runes, classic spells, classic items.... but have all the current roster, so nobody feels left out, plus the most balanced version of the previous version of a champion... Champions with multiple reworks would get the version that was least BS, like Mordekaiser would not come back with his dragon pet... unless classic dragon is a less BS version of a pet... hmmm...

But yeah, I would love to pit old vs new... Fiora vs Fiora, Akali vs Akali, etc... I know that's like going to be certainly doom for the old version, but.... hey... I want to see it.

1

u/Dabox720 2h ago

I just wanted all the fking champs. That's literally my only issue.

1

u/Chicony 12h ago

In all honesty, no matter which season you go to, I wouldn't basically care about classic at all. If it featured something I'd be really interested in (like pre-rework Galio), I would still play one game and leave for good again. Imo modern league is simply more fun, all there is to classic for me is a nostalgy, but once I play it, I just see that almost everything in the game was worse than is is now. And I play since season 1, so I really did experience almost an entire history of League.

Sorry to any League Classic enjoyers, but the way I see it, I'm glad it's going away. I don't want them to waste any resources on this project, because it surely has better use anywhere else.
