Raw rootbeer chert 5 1/8”x 1 9/16”
Had a natural fracture in the base you can see in the last photo. Hammerstone and moose billet percussion, bison punch, bison pressure. Didn’t think anything would come out of the rock when I started, one whole side was filled with cracks and inclusions. Thankfully it stayed together. Pretty happy with this piece.

I've been saving some percussion flakes that I rework the past couple of weeks. I like to keep them for arrows and darts.

Love how this baby came out. Gold Sheen is just the best… it’s smooth and predictable… at least this one was! A combination of English and American walnut compliments it perfectly!

Made these two out of some chert from last month's challenge! Its my first time working chert and I really like how it flakes! Thanks to the generous people who made this possible, and u/myself_today for donating their winnings! It was a close one for sure. Can't wait to make some more points out of all the new materials!

Question 🤔❓ Why did this happen?

Beginner here. Hit platform about where my middle finger is using a small flat hammer stone with not a crazy amount of force. Not the worst result by any means but by no means intentional

Question 🤔❓ Leopard Skin Jasper

Thumbnail

There’s a boat-load of this material not far from my home. In my area there was a lot of volcano activity a day or 25 million ago, so lots of obsidian varieties and some wonderfully weird rocks about.

My question is, has anyone ever made points with Jasper, and particularly Leopard Skin Jasper (Leopard Skin Rhyolite)? It finishes out with some cool patterns but it seems like a fussy rock to work with.

Thanks for any insight - and on Jasper period, as there are lots of different Jaspers around too.

Made With Modern Tools🔨 Silversheen Obsidian

Neolithic Post of the Day: Now that the bike shop is slowing down, I get more time to play with all the fun rocks I found over the summer. This is a larger piece of Silver Sheen Obsidian I found out of Mono Basin. Most silver sheen is just a solid flash of silver, this is more cloudy or nebulous with black and sliver bands fading across the blade. The silver flash is caused by millions of micro bubbles that reflect light back out of the obsidian. The bubbles were forced into the molten lava before it cooled into obsidian. The handle is Ancient Cedar I found out of Sonora Pass, California area. It is 2000-4000 years old. I love the combo, and thanks for looking.

Made With Modern Tools🔨 Working Through Rock and Through Grief

Post image
67 Upvotes

I have been flintknapping like a madman for 2 months now, and I have absolutely fallen in love with the craft. My father passed away 3 months ago now. I work in Archaeology, so he would always show me youtube videos of people making points out of beer bottle bottoms, or he would watch flintknapping videos and just thought it was the coolest thing ever. He would always ask me if I would ever get into making my own arrowheads. I always brushed it off saying I prefer to find and document them in my career rather than make them myself. After my father passed, I was stricken very heavily with grief. I wanted to do something to distract myself from the pain of the loss I had just experienced, and something inside me was driving me towards knapping. It’s been 2 months now since I started, and this hobby has helped me through such a difficult time in my life. Every time I break stone and start running flakes I feel connected to my dad like I’m honouring his legacy. I intend to be at this hobby for a lifetime and someday when I feel i’ve made something worthy, I’ll leave a point at my dad’s grave to show him how far i’ve come. I’ve found a hobby that truly makes me happy and excited and I thank my Dad for giving this last gift to me. Thanks for taking the time to read my story about how flintknapping has meant so much to me.

Happy knapping everyone, and may the flakes run just as you need them to.
