question Meaning of passada & cruzada

My local instructor (quite small dance community) has begun using these as terms for kizomba moves after some private lessons with an Angolan dancer. The explanation and contexts given for these terms just aren't adding up for me. I feel like there may have been a misunderstanding given slight language barriers, but I could be entirely wrong and just not getting it. Can anyone help me understand what these mean in the context of traditional kizomba?

question Diagrams for moves? (Kizomba and Urban Kiz)

The question: Are there any diagrams out there for moves or patterns or sequences (or any term you prefer)? I attempted to search the internet but no luck. They say "why do the work if someone else has already done it" (not applicable to cheating if you're school age).

The context: In the group I'm in, we've made a poster with list of moves and patterns we could do during a dance. Hanging this on a wall let's us remember all our options while we practice freestyling so we don't end up just doing basics & saidas, in order to practice everything we've been taught thus far.

In addition to the list we want to add diagrams for the more complicated moves/patterns (i.e. stuff we don't practice nearly as much as the basics). Not trying to draw every little detail but enough to get the rough idea.

Thank you in advance!

Clarification: the purpose of the poster & diagrams is that during practice/class we can have a quick reminder of the different options we have, during a time we're purposely practicing stuff above the basics. Doing the basics well during a social dance is still part of the goal.

London kizomba festival

EDIT: This episode introduces the issue that festival scam like this can happen again because the overall macroeconomical situation, organisers need to give more guarantees, visitors need more safety from now on to give trust. This can happen for another event consolidated with 3 or more editions like London Kizomba had, by the way the guy is trying again https://allevents.in/west-drayton/kizomba-festival-london-uk-spring-edition-3-19-22-march-2027/200029977025000 and of course he can do in another nation with new artists etc. and the same can happen for some other festival lead from other organisers that do not meet enough demand.

Original Post:
SCAM
the organiser "cancelled" the festival 2 hours before the start , he was showing in his instagram a lot of top world di s and top instructors video interviews recommending it even 4 hours before, of course no reason to cancel, most of the artists, all the visitors were in the hotel already,
Hundred of people from every part of the world came in London to hear that the hotel never had any booking accommodation on their name after paying 1-2k of travel, booking, masterclasses etc and nobody speak about this in the dance community, the hotel even does not approve people can try some moves inside the *RADISSON BLU HOTEL\ for the dozens of ones that booked directly*. Nice and do not worry is already advertising a new festival for the spring.

On which beat do you start dancing?

Hi everyone,

I’m new to the community and to Kizomba, though I’ve been dancing various forms of Caribbean dance for a few years now.

I’ve taken just a few lessons, and the question that keeps crossing my mind is: "How important is it to start on the 'one' beat while dancing?"

Thanks, everyone.

Question for followers: What urban-kizz festival in Europe do you recommend?

Hi! I'm an intermediate follower looking to try a new festival abroad!

I've noticed that festival recommendations can be quite different depending on whether I ask leaders or followers. So, as a follower myself, I'd love to hear from other followers: **Which festivals have you been to where the leader-to-follower ratio was good, especially at the socials and parties?**

I'm also looking for a festival with a nice atmosphere. For example, I really liked KizCon! The location was beautiful, and having food included was a big plus. Unfortunately, the ratio was terrible at the 2026 edition.

So I'm hoping to find a festival that's just as nice, but with a much better balance between leaders and followers!

Any recommendations?

Hips moving the wrong way

I’ve (a follower), just started learning Kuzomba after being a novice student of Tango for about 4 years and I’ve hit my first hurdle. In tango I work hard to keep my hips level and if I were to push down into the floor with one leg (say my right) that would be my standing leg and my left would naturally dangle from a loose hip. The knee of my left leg would be more bent than my standing right leg - as if my left leg were to long for the floor. this allows my left leg to be moved freely by the movement of my body (like a pendulum)

In Kiz it appears that I’m generally standing on both legs and as I push into the floor with my right my knee should bend and my right hip would rise. I’d repeat on the other side with each knee bending with the same hip rising - back and forth side to side.

Yet when I push into the floor and bend my right knee it’s my left hip that goes up. (The opposite hip to knee). Why? Is this wrong because my teacher says it is but watching videos I’m struggling to catch if everyone does the same

info Rhythms of Resilience: The True Story of Kizomba

Arun Pauer

"Kizomba's story didn't begin on the dance floor — it began in the fight for freedom. Born from Angola's Semba tradition and forged through decades of colonial struggle and resilience, Kizomba carries the weight of history in every slow, connected step.

In this video, we trace the true origins of Kizomba — from the streets of Luanda during the fight against colonial rule, through the evolution of Semba into the smooth, synth-driven sound of modern Kizomba, to the intimate connection that defines it on dancefloors worldwide today.

🥁 The Roots — Semba and the rhythms of pre-colonial Angola
✊ The Resistance — how music became a language of survival during the independence struggle
🎹 The Evolution — synthesizers and the birth of the modern Kizomba sound
💃 The Connection — why Kizomba's embrace is unlike any other partner dance

Kizomba is more than a dance — it's a living archive of resilience, identity, and love."

question To the beginner leaders who left because kizomba was too difficult and then returned, what changed?

I made the unfortunate mistake of going to a kizomba social only after a couple of beginner classes. I knew about beginner's hell as I have some background in salsa and bachata however the reception I got was traumatizing.

Followers who gave a face almost as if I smelled bad and one who stopped the dance halfway. I was so rejected that even a year later I feel dread whenever I think of picking up Kizomba again.

It was made worse by the fact that a follower friend of mine from bachata invited me to the kizomba social saying it would be a great time as she had many dances that lasted almost an hour whereas mine was like 1 or half a song.

Intellectually i know that i have to go back to take more classes and get through the beginner's hell however I don't know how to deal with the emotion of rejection.

which country followers are more picky

I see in the posts we are circling around an important issue, so I focus here:

I have the strong feeling same followers that stop a dance after 1 song with a beginner, well are the ones that complain there are not leaders, and spend the night sitting or learning to lead supposing to have fun.

As I dance with all nationalities across every country, I noticed that is a cultural thing, not every country is like this, every festival have evidence.

Edit: the point is not that everybody is free to dance or stop after 1 song. Of course.
I am speaking about the attitude of who decide to not encourage beginners and make the community grow and how will backfire on themselves. one does not nurture a beginner friendly environment for leaders fair enough but do not complain after that there are not enough leaders because only with lessons and not social a leader will never improve because social is real leading

Advice to a beginner leader

This post is mainly venting, however I am also looking to some guidance.

So I have been dancing for a couple of months. All the dance classes I go to are intermediate or intermediate(followers say they are basic... well maybe for them because they dont have to lead as they only need to recognize the move). The beginner classes are not easily reachable for me as they are in a different city 2 hrs away. So I am stuck with intermediate.

I find it hard to follow some of the classes...well most of the classes. I finally learned a few moves that I can use in dances but rarely do I mach them well with the beat. The followers almost never refuse a dance but I can tell things are not going well because the follower just tries to read my next move even though I never wanted to do it that way. Then at times I tell the follower playfully thats not what I was going to do but there are times I redo the move and do the move as they tried earlier on. From what I understand I shouldnt resist if a follower is not picking up my suggestion and just change to basic side step for the rest of the song then thank them for the dance and move on.

Some teachers teach the saidas already linked up to another basic move. I think thats why some followers try to follow instead of just listening to my lead.

Anyways, I want to master this dance because I like both the music and the connection during the dance... not for the wrong reasons one might think but the appeal of going on a short journey on the beats of a song whwre we understand eachother without saying a word about whats next. This is one of the reasons I enjoy jazz music too, however its not much of a dance to music.

What do you suggest I could try to do when followers cannot let go and follow my lead? How to do better during intermediate classes? Any other suggestions are wellcome.

what's this song? Slow, melancholic Kizomba/Cabo Love duet, possibly 1990–2014 — female lead, male joins chorus

I’m trying to identify a song I heard around 2014–2016. I don’t know when it was released; it could be from roughly 1990–2014.

What I remember:

  • Slow and melancholic, with a piano or Rhodes intro lasting about 10 seconds.
  • A female singer starts after the intro. A male voice joins her in the chorus, then briefly leads into another shared chorus.
  • There’s a short instrumental phrase near the end.
  • The language may be French, Cape Verdean Creole/Kriolu, or Portuguese. The style may be Kizomba, Cabo Love, or Cabo Zouk.

Here’s my own FL Studio melody reconstruction—not a recording of the original song: [MP3 link]
Optional MIDI: [MIDI link] (Both links have 2 mp3 files and 1 midi)

The notes are approximate and may be transposed. As I remember them, the intro moves from A5 down to D5; the female melody starts around A4 and reaches D5.

Two vibe references only—neither is the song, and I don’t remember the mystery song sharing their melodies:

  • Nelson Freitas & Chelsy Shantel – “Boa Sorte” — closest in structure/theme so far, but the song I’m looking for was slower and more melancholic.
  • Philip Monteiro feat. Nany Vaz & Jair – “Lamento” — similar feel, but Philip Monteiro is only a style reference; I don’t think he performed the song I’m looking for.

Any suggestions are welcome, especially older female-led Cape Verdean/Kriolu, Portuguese, or French-language duets. I've already tried using Shazam, and AI to find the song name.

After dark questions for guys

So I sometimes dance for long periods with leads (30 min or more), and I don't want it to be awkward for them. But I also don't want to create a false sense of intimacy so they don't invite me to their place or something. I would like to understand the kizomba dynamic from your perspective.

1) When you get 'excited', do you think of something else to turn it off so you can keep dancing? (Doesn't bother me at all but I worry they feel self conscious) 2) I can def feel it, so should we stop dancing and give you a break? 3) Why don't you know Konpa? or what's holding you back from doing gouyad when konpa comes on?
