Discussion and ideas What's next for r/kinusaiga? Survey results and Oct 2026 state of the subreddit

Hi everyone!

Now that this subreddit is a few months old, and that we have so many talented artists, interested newbies, and textile art fans in this community, it's time for us to start shaping this page into something that's more useful for us. So, what changes should you expect to see?

Survey results!

I sent around a survey asking you what you'd like to see next! The 3 most popular responses were: a free kinusaiga pattern database, a page about pattern creation without AI, and a free monthly pattern.

To whoever marked "Do you have another idea? Please check here and I'll reach out!" on the survey: it turns out the survey responses are anonymous. Whoops. Please DM me!

Free kinusaiga pattern database

The idea behind this is a place where anyone can upload kinusaiga patterns they have made, as well as search for free kinusaiga patterns by category. The main hurdle in accomplishing this is figuring out HOW to do this. Right now, my idea is to start this off as a google drive, with the end objective of moving somewhere more user-friendly once I figure out how. If anyone here has any ideas, or any computer skills, please let me know!

Resource and how-to pages (with NO AI)

There are a lot of newcomers here, which is so exciting! That also means a lot of people who are wondering where to get started, so I'm working on a series of pages about each step of the kinusaiga process. I also love u/BattleNunForalltime's idea about a series of videos about this process, so that'll be the next step! Right now, the plan is for the first page to be a general page about tools needed, and the second page to be about pattern creation.

Free monthly pattern

A new free kinusaiga pattern published every month? Awesome!

My plan for this, inspired by the wonderful u/Claycorp, is to bring one of my favorite parts of r/StainedGlass over to this subreddit: asking you to vote for a theme around the 15th of each month, and sharing a pattern centered around the winning theme around the first of the following month. My longer-term goal is to highlight kinusaiga pattern artists, though to start off I will likely either be finding already made kinusaiga, quilting, or stained glass patterns (with artist credit, and permission when possible) or making them myself.

When should I be expecting these changes?

Over the next few weeks, hopefully! If you want to help, or if you have any comments to add to any of these ideas or more suggestions, please comment or message me! :D

First project! My first go at it!

I discovered Kinusaiga about 1.5 weeks ago and here we are. Is she perfect? NAH. But she looks real pretty when I squint a little, and I’m already planning the next one. Not sure I’ll go so bold with the outline next time but the cord was great at covering little mistakes 🤫

I just need to make a frame!

As an avid sewist, I've been wanting to do this with my tiny scraps. I had a blast making this. I included some loose glitter, glued down under a scrap of clear, iridescent gift bag to make the ufo beam. I used some otherwise cheap and useless sewing pins to pin down a fabric wrap around the edge. I loved how quickly it went together and how fun it was doing it.

I live in fla’da and I love these little birds. There is a mural on a key I live near and this is a small version of that mural.

Really enjoying teaching this with my students. Has anyone found double sided sheets you can draw on?

I'm a huge Legend of Zelda nerd and I'm obsessed with how this turned out! I want to keep it for myself but I made it to include in a silent auction I'm doing next month to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

Excited to start on my next one that will be for myself! It was a lot of work but fun to work on. Loving this new craft 🙂

Looking for Non-AI generated pattern suggestions

I'm looking for patterns on etsy and everything is AI-generated crap. Does anyone have suggestions for where to find real patterns created by humans?

First Attempt

I just picked up some supplies because I came across the artform while scrolling through tiktok. I didn’t want to start off with anything too difficult so my first attempt is just whimsy fun.

Where do we all get our fabric?

I've just started and for my first piece, I just got some squares from Amazon. Are there better places to get fabric?

Edit: I'm from the UK, btw!

Discussion and ideas Beginners help!

I haven't started doing this yet but as someone that picks up new hobbies and puts them down again, I have an idea for how to make this subreddit more useful to those that visit it.

A wiki/FAQ side bar with some good tutorials both video and written. A good link for patterns (free or paid) and a trusted software to create your own. Any webpages of tips etc. and even tips sourced from the community.

In all of the hobby subreddits that is usually the first place people look for how to get into the thing they just found and with so many new people finding this one, it might decrease the number of FAQ type question posts the subreddit gets.

This is my first project, and it was so fun to make! Where are y’all finding frames that work for the 1” foam? I found this one thrifting, but I had to go to three stores to find one.

Other Would love to try this art form. Any tips?

I found about Kinusaiga through this group. I had never heard of it before till recently. Looks beautiful!

I have so much fabric from my mom who passed away during Covid and haven’t gotten to the point yet for sewing projects. This seems like it’d be a new adventure to give her fabric a new life. Do y’all recommend any YouTube tutorials in particular? Any tips?

Thank you and God bless y’all :-)

Help! First time: Design

I have not yet tried Kinusaiga, though it’s one I’m excited to try and soon. My stepdad does astral photography and his birthday is coming up soon and decided to make him a replica of a recent picture he took for a gift.

Being me, I’m probably going over my head and wanted experienced opinions about this design. I tried to make my own design using the image but I’m wondering if this should be reworked to have less shapes or if it simply just looks bad and to try again.

renewable materials

I've been looking all over the Internet for a more renewable/compostable material than polyesterene insulation foam board (nonrecyclable). Styrofoam doesn't work, nor does everyday cardboard (too thin). Saw someone try flip flops.

Anyway, anyone have any other leads? Maybe even what kind of soft wood to use. This is an awesome craft for reusing fabric waste. Would love to find something for the board that's also an environmentally conscious material.
