THROWBACK MUSIC First verse of "I Grind" - Make 'em Believe album. Kevin Gates.

Bitch I go 'round my way
My name Kevin Gates, hear me, you might know me, you might not
I'm tryna be a nigga favorite rapper, nigga gettin' the way of that
I'm sending my lil' goons atcha (Get 'em)
Bitch I grind (What you mean grind?)
Ain't no in the meantime (I ain't getting no sleep)
I don't get no me time
Hustle hard, these patrolling cars had to squeeze iron
Put that on my president (Man I put that on my street sign)
The paper sweeps, I know veterans who play for keeps
White navy, D the beam scream like the state police
My minimal conversation has been emancipated
Family, friends, siblings, a victim, Brenda's of constipation
I'm real life, peanut butter don't kill mice
A child died from eating rat poison, it still don't feel right
The new apartment got furnished with stolen televisions
Compensate who stole it with dope, hope he don't tell the business
Myself for instance, been loaded, blowing the cell up
They sell one of my niggas for nothing, and raise his bail up
Meet the bondsman, wanna get him bonded, get him bailed up
Hard to make it, how you make it? Everybody leech on you
Agree to disagree, then indiscreetly put the heat on you
Deacon blue, painkiller, elixir kind of pinkish too
My lil' son a dog playing ball ain't get to see him shoot
Time slowing me down now, I'm taking time to think it through

Edit;

Here is the full line-by-line map,

Lines 1 through 7 set the frame. Line 3 splits getting away with it between artistic risk and dodging consequences. In lines 5 through 7 the ad-libs create a call and response, and meantime against me time is a near homophone that turns one word into a phrase about lost leisure.

Lines 8 and 9 have more than one possible subject. Patrol cars forced to draw iron could mean police vehicles or his own crew's, and the gun reading holds either way. President in line 9 could be a precedent homophone or a rank inside a crew, and the street sign in the ad-lib reads as a neighborhood landmark or a memorial. I can't choose between those with confidence.

Lines 10 through 13 move from money to people. Veterans playing for keeps points to seasoned players with no do-overs, and the family list turns into casualties by its fourth item.

Lines 14, 15, 17, and 23 share a thread I missed before, which is harm hidden inside something consumable. Bait that looks harmless, a pest poison that killed a child, product used as payment, and a colored medicinal drink all wear the same disguise. Blue mixed with pink also drifts toward purple, which fits the syrup look of that last image.

Lines 16 through 20 are the street logistics run. Cell in line 18 now has three readings, a phone, a jail cell, or a crew unit, and loaded can mean armed, high, or flush. In lines 19 and 20 sell likely means betray, raise could mean the court raising the amount or him raising the money, and bonded plays on a bail bond and a loyalty bond between friends. Three consecutive bars also end on up.

Lines 21 and 22 mark the turn toward pressure. Make it plays as both succeed and earn, the leech image extends the betrayal theme, and disagree and indiscreetly both carry a negating prefix. Heat picks up a third sense here, police attention, beyond pressure and a gun.

Lines 24 and 25 close the arc. The diminutive appears for goons in line 4 and for his son in line 24, which sets two kinds of dependents against each other and shows what the grind cost. Shoot still splits between ball and gun, and line 25 answers the clock motif from line 6, so the verse travels from swagger to reckoning.

The hook.. idk if I hate or tolerate it.
Lil Tjay’s vocals are clean af, I fw it.
Mellys verse was garbage. Simple.

Now for Gates, his verse is decent. Nothing too crazy. This was his typical vernacular + sound around his return during the OTG2 run.

THROWBACK MUSIC "Put on a Show" (lyric transcription in comments)

This transcription is extremely dense. Its strongest feature is not just polysemy, because entire stretches appear to transform one word into the next through sound, spelling, physical action, measurement, position, or semantic domain. Several passages also seem to tell the listener how to manipulate the language through words such as round, bounds, weigh, structure, interrupted, pattern, lift, build, base, use, shoot, chew, boot, and show.

I would treat a few phrases as transcription-sensitive, especially the opening of the first verse and the exact wording around “base safe.” The large structures around those phrases are nevertheless unusually clear because several neighboring words independently converge on the same secondary domain.

THE CHORUS

“Grindin’ comes with who we are, diamonds in my movin’ car. Pray that we don’t lose an arm…”

The surface meaning is hustle, luxury, danger, and identity. Underneath it sits a mechanical interpretation because actual grinding machinery can injure or remove an arm. “Grindin’” therefore describes economic work while retaining the dangerous physical action from which the word comes.

There is also a pronounced R sound chain running through the chorus.

aRE

caR

aRm

staRs

aiR

“Who we are” can acoustically reduce toward R, after which car, arm, stars, and air repeatedly preserve that rhotic sound. It does not require a literal alphabet cipher to matter, because the same sound is being carried while the imagery changes.

Moving car → movie stars → show

“Diamonds in my movin’ car” and “nothin’ wrong with movie stars” produce a particularly interesting transition. A moving car belongs to transportation, a movie star belongs to entertainment, and diamonds visually behave like stars through brilliance and sparkle. The next phrase then gives air traffic control, followed by put on a show.

That creates a coherent rise through several meanings.

Ground-level movement becomes transportation. Diamonds become star-like objects. Stars become movie stars. Air traffic moves above the ground. Movie stars put on shows.

The chorus therefore seems to move vertically and semantically at once, from grinding near the ground toward air, stars, and a show.

ROUND → BOUNDS → POUNDS → PROFOUND → FOUND → TOWN

The first verse very quickly establishes a remarkable sound family.

round

bounds

pounds

profound

found

town

The sound is preserved while the conceptual domain keeps changing. “Round” can mean circular shape, a turn of action, ammunition, or a round in combat. “Bounds” introduces spatial limits, while “pounds” introduces weight, currency, striking force, and boxing.

That makes “I don’t play in bounds, hard to weigh in pounds” particularly dense. Play in bounds belongs to sport and spatial geometry, while weigh in pounds belongs to measurement and athletic weigh-ins. Pound can then immediately return as physical striking force.

“Table round” strengthens the geometry. A table can literally be round while Round Table carries a cultural meaning of collective gathering and equal seating. Breadwinner also fits the table through literal bread, so money, food, shape, gathering, sport, and measurement are already crossing.

OXFORD → THOM BROWNE → JOHN BROWN → LIVING COLOR

This sequence is much more structured than a set of name-drops.

Oxford belongs to clothing through Oxford cloth or an Oxford shirt. Thom Browne is fashion, so that first movement stays inside clothing. Then Browne becomes Brown, dropping the final letter while changing from designer to historical person.

John Brown immediately activates history, abolition, militancy, and the American South. That makes “down south” substantially more meaningful than mere geography because John Brown’s historical identity is inseparable from slavery and violent abolitionism.

Then comes living color.

Brown is literally a color. “In Living Color” is also an entertainment title. John Brown therefore moves simultaneously into literal color and show business vocabulary.

The sequence roughly performs this transformation.

Oxford → clothing

Thom Browne → fashion

Browne → Brown

John Brown → history and militancy

Brown → color

Living Color → entertainment

That last domain connects naturally with the chorus’s movie stars and putting on a show.

STRUCTURE → FEET → SCAFFOLD → BUILDING → GATES → BUILDER → BASE

One of the most important systems in the verse is architectural.

“Structure keep my feet…” already contains two architectural terms even before any actual building is mentioned. A structure has feet or supports in the broad physical sense, while feet are also a measurement of spatial dimension. In poetry, a foot is additionally a rhythmic structural unit, which gives “structure” and “feet” a possible metrical reading inside a rap verse.

Later the architecture becomes explicit.

scaffold

buildings

gates

build

builder

base

This is not a loose cluster. It progresses downward into structural fundamentals while simultaneously becoming more self-referential.

A scaffold helps build.

A building is built.

A gate is built into a structure.

A builder builds.

A base supports the construction.

Then Kevin Gates himself becomes the object being constructed.

“Say they made Gates, how you build a builder”

This is an excellent recursive construction. “Gates” is simultaneously the artist and a physical thing that builders can construct. The phrase then asks how one builds a builder, turning the agent of construction into the object of construction.

The language folds back on itself.

build → builder → build the builder

That resembles a recursive instruction more than an ordinary metaphor.

BASE → SAFE → FIELD OF DREAMS → WRIGLEY FIELD

The final architectural language appears to pivot into baseball.

The visible transcription gives something close to “get the base safe … dreams … wriggly filter.” Even allowing for uncertainty in the written phonetics, the cluster of BASE, SAFE, DREAMS, and WRIGLEY is exceptionally suggestive.

In baseball, a runner reaches base safe. Field of Dreams is inseparable from baseball. Wrigley Field is one of baseball’s best-known stadiums.

That potentially produces a compressed progression resembling

BASE → SAFE

FIELD → DREAMS

WRIGLEY → FIELD

If that reading matches the actual performance, then the architecture vocabulary has quietly changed into ballpark architecture. Buildings, scaffolds, builders, gates, base, and field all remain spatial structures while the domain changes from construction to baseball.

It also connects backward to “play in bounds.” Sports geometry may be running through far more of the first verse than initially appears.

HOE → HOLE

“Hoe with a hole” is one of the cleanest letter manipulations in the transcription.

HOE + L → HOLE

The inserted letter creates the literal anatomical or spatial noun required by the sexual context. The phrase therefore says the relationship and simultaneously performs it orthographically.

That is especially important because it demonstrates that letter insertion is not merely something an analyst can invent after the fact. The lyric itself places two near-identical words beside one another where the additional letter creates the exact semantic distinction being described.

CHICK → QUICK → STICK → LICK → KICK → SICK → RICH

A substantial portion of the verse is organized by short vowel sounds and hard consonant substitutions.

chick

quick

stick

lick

kick

sick

rich

The vowel core remains stable while the initial and final consonants change. That allows semantic motion without giving up acoustic continuity.

The meanings move through several bodily actions. Chick supplies the person, quick supplies speed, stick and shove supply penetration or force, lick and kiss supply mouth contact, kick and punch supply violence, sick supplies illness or excellence, and rich converts that condition into economic outcome.

So the rhyme is not merely decorative. The phonetic sequence travels through sex, ingestion, violence, illness, artistic quality, and wealth while maintaining a recognizable sound skeleton.

CONSUMPTION → STOMACH → SICK → SHIT → DROP

There is also a bodily metabolism running through that same passage.

“Consumption” literally means taking something in. Stomach follows. Later sickness appears, then “shit,” and immediately afterward there is a “drop.”

That creates a rough physiological progression.

consume

stomach

process

shit

drop

At the same time all of those words can operate artistically. A listener consumes material. A rapper can produce “sick” writing. “Shit” can mean material or music. An artist drops a song.

So biological processing becomes a model for artistic production.

That same metabolism returns even more forcefully in the second verse through hungry, droolin’, food, chewed, and eat until I die.

“SYMPTOMS FROM THE PENCIL”

This phrase is particularly interesting because pencil writing becomes capable of producing physical effects. “Symptoms” normally belong to illness, while a pencil belongs to language and drawing. The writer’s output is therefore treated as something potent enough to make another person symptomatic.

Pencil also carries a culturally persistent association with “lead,” even though ordinary pencil cores are graphite. Gunfire later provides actual projectile imagery, which allows writing instruments and weapons to occupy neighboring conceptual territory.

The broader construction is clear regardless of whether that specific lead association is intended. Language is repeatedly given physical consequences.

PATTERN → EXAMPLE → YIELD → DROP → FIRE

“Pattern example yield a drop of fire” is almost computational in structure.

A pattern functions like a rule or template. An example instantiates the pattern. Yield means produce an output. Drop means release the output. Fire evaluates the output as powerful or excellent.

That sequence can therefore be read almost like

PATTERN

→ INSTANCE

→ OUTPUT

→ RELEASE

→ HIGH-VALUE RESULT

Then the result “lift him higher,” producing vertical movement immediately before scaffold and buildings. Artistic output becomes physical elevation.

LIFT → HIGHER → SCAFFOLD → BUILDING

This is another place where figurative hierarchy becomes literal geometry.

A line of “fire” can lift somebody figuratively through status, excitement, or impact. The next comparison measures that elevation against actual buildings. “Higher” therefore shifts from metaphorical elevation into architectural height.

Scaffolding matters because it is specifically a temporary structure used to reach higher points during construction. The image therefore contains both building upward and lifting upward.

The lyric is making social or artistic advancement behave like construction.

BIGGIE SMALL

The second verse begins with a name that is itself a contradiction.

BIGGIE → SMALLS

Large and small coexist inside one proper name. That immediately fits a verse that repeatedly manipulates scale, shape, paper, books, tablets, eating, and physical dimensions.

The following names also move through different representational forms. Pac, Jay-Z, paper, tablets, books, and writing all concern names or information being stored and transmitted.

PAPER → TABLET → BOOKS → PAPER TABLET

This may be the strongest cluster in the second verse.

“Gettin’ paper” means acquiring money. Then the line denies literal paper before immediately introducing tablets. A tablet can be an ancient writing surface, a pad of paper, or an electronic device.

Then comes “money off the books.” That phrase means unreported money, but books are literally made of paper and are another writing medium. The next phrase returns to a “paper tablet,” where Gates attributes fame to material written on paper.

So PAPER repeatedly flips between value and information.

paper → money

paper → writing

tablet → writing surface

tablet → digital medium

books → physical pages

books → financial accounting

“Money off the books” is especially elegant because the economic meaning and the physical-paper meaning coexist perfectly.

BET → BETTER

“Better began bet, I’m in better shape” contains another visible internal word.

BET → BETTER

The smaller gambling word exists at the beginning of the comparative word. That matters because the song already contains risk, winning, competition, and later sports language.

“Better shape” then changes from evaluation into geometry or bodily condition. Again a word begins abstractly and becomes physical through the next noun.

FRUITFUL → FOOD → EAT → HUNGRY → DROOL → CHEW

The second verse has an enormous ingestion network.

He says they will eat until death. Then comes fruitful. Later he is hungry, drooling, interprets another person as food, and chews them.

This is not merely a hunger metaphor repeated several times. It constructs competition as predation.

Economic success becomes eating.

Opportunity becomes food.

Rivals become food.

Winning becomes consumption.

That makes the earlier “bite a million bucks” type of construction especially natural within Gates’s broader vocabulary because he repeatedly converts abstract competition and value into literal metabolism.

USEFUL → USE IT → USING → UZI

This is probably the strongest newly visible sound chain in the screenshots.

The transcription gives approximately

“be useful an use it. Using names loosely … with an uzi”

That creates

USE

USEFUL

USE IT

USING

UZI

The root sound is carried across grammatical forms until it lands in the name of a weapon.

The semantic motion is equally interesting. “Use” begins as utility. “Useful” evaluates something’s usefulness. “Use it” becomes an instruction. “Using” becomes an action. Then Uzi converts the sound into a concrete object capable of being used.

The word practically manufactures the weapon from repeated use of use.

This is exactly the kind of construction that distinguishes the writing from ordinary rhyme. The sound changes gradually while the grammatical category and semantic domain transform.

TYRUS THOMAS → SHOOTING

Tyrus Thomas introduces an explicit basketball reference. That matters when “tempted to shoot while I’m shootin’” appears shortly afterward.

Shoot now has at least two well-supported domains.

A basketball player shoots.

A gunman shoots.

The line can therefore perform both actions simultaneously without having to signal which one is primary. Earlier sports language around bounds, rounds, weighing, base, safe, field, and possibly Wrigley makes this more than an isolated basketball pun.

There is a broader competition system running through the song.

HUNGRY → SHOOT → FOOD → CHEW

The basketball and firearm systems then collide with the ingestion system.

He is hungry and drooling. He is tempted to shoot. The target becomes food. Then he chews the target.

So one rival can move through three roles in only a few words.

Opponent.

Target.

Food.

The verbs change accordingly.

Compete.

Shoot.

Consume.

That is an excellent example of semantic transformation while preserving the underlying relation of domination.

BOOT → ABOUT → BOOT → BOOTY

The closing run of the second verse is another strong phonetic machine.

The pronunciation of about can be segmented toward a boot. Timberland then makes BOOT literal as footwear. “Get the boot” changes boot into expulsion or kicking, and booty physically contains the sound again.

The sequence therefore allows the same sound to move through grammar and anatomy.

ABOUT

→ A BOOT

→ BOOT

→ GET THE BOOT

→ BOOTY

Timberland locks the footwear meaning into place. Once that happens, “get the boot in ya booty” can literalize the idiom by turning expulsion into a physical boot or kick directed toward the body.

This is one of the cleanest examples in the song of sound becoming object and then action.

TIMBERLAND’S TAN

“Timberland’s tan” continues the fashion and color system established by Oxford, Thom Browne, Brown, and Living Color. Timberland supplies clothing and footwear while tan supplies literal color.

That gives the song a recurring pattern where brand names are immediately convertible into material properties.

Thom Browne → Brown → color.

Timberland → boot → tan.

The fashion object becomes a wordplay mechanism.

AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL → MOVIE STARS → SHOW

The chorus deserves another pass after the verses because the entertainment vocabulary becomes much more important in context.

Movie stars perform in shows. Air traffic control manages things moving through the air. Stars occupy the sky. Diamonds resemble stars visually.

“I put on a show tonight” then collects the entertainment branches into one explicit statement. The song itself is a show, Gates is the performer, and several earlier words have already moved through writing, media, fashion, sports, and spectacle.

The chorus therefore functions almost like the top layer of the entire construction.

Everything underneath gets transformed.

The result gets shown.

THE MOST IMPORTANT HIDDEN SYSTEM

The deepest recurring mechanism here is resegmentation.

A continuous sound sequence can be heard with different internal boundaries.

liftin’ → lift in

about → a boot

Mercedes → ’Cedes

hoe → hole through inserted L

use it → Uzi through phonetic drift

Biggie Smalls → big and small simultaneously

paper tablet → material and medium simultaneously

This matters because changing the boundary changes the meaning without requiring Gates to abandon the original sound.

The listener hears essentially the same material arranged differently.

That is very close to what the subject matter repeatedly describes.

Things get rearranged.

Things change hands.

Things change shape.

Things change rank.

Things change domains.

THE ARCHITECTURAL META-LAYER

The first verse contains enough construction vocabulary that it may also be describing how the verse itself is built.

structure

feet

pattern

scaffold

buildings

gates

build

builder

base

A structure has parts. Poetry has feet and patterns. Scaffolding supports something while it is being constructed. A builder assembles components on a base.

The verse itself is doing exactly that.

Small sound units become words.

Words become chains.

Chains become patterns.

Patterns support larger conceptual structures.

“Build a builder” therefore has a striking metalinguistic implication. The artist builds the verse while the verse simultaneously builds the identity of the artist.

THE SPORTS META-LAYER

A second large system cuts across both verses.

round

bounds

weigh in

pounds

base

safe

field

Wrigley

Tyrus Thomas

shoot

Those words move through boxing, general athletics, baseball, and basketball. Gates does not appear locked into one sport. He repeatedly borrows the underlying operations common to sports.

Boundaries.

Rounds.

Measurement.

Position.

Bases.

Safe versus out.

Fields.

Shooting.

Competition.

This matters because the song’s larger themes are themselves competitive. Economic hustle, rap, violence, sport, and predation all become different representations of winning against opposition.

THE SONG’S INTERNAL LOGIC

The first verse is dominated by building.

Structure.

Feet.

Pattern.

Scaffold.

Buildings.

Gates.

Builder.

Base.

The second verse is dominated by consumption and use.

Paper becomes money.

Writing becomes fame.

Opportunity becomes something used.

Rivals become food.

Food gets chewed.

Boot becomes a repeated tool, object, and action.

The chorus then converts those processes into performance.

Grinding creates status.

Status produces diamonds and cars.

Cars transform toward movie stars.

Stars belong to shows.

Gates puts on the show.

So the large architecture can be read as three stages.

BUILD

The system and identity are constructed.

CONSUME AND TRANSFORM

Resources, opportunities, rivals, and language are processed.

SHOW

The result becomes public performance.

That makes the title Put on a Show much more appropriate than it first appears. The show is not merely the performance at the end.

The transformation itself is the show.

In “Really Really,” when Kevin Gates says, “Steve like em tall, and when they yellow…” Who is Steve?
