Kava and Statins
I’m curious if anyone here takes kava with statins and whether they have suffered from increased statin side effects. I understand traditional prep noble kava is not directly harmful to the liver but what I can find still says kavalactones themselves are strong inhibitors of liver enzymes. Here is a quote from AI:
Traditional Prep vs. Toxicity: While traditional water-based prep using noble cultivars (e.g., Borogu) has a much lower risk of acute liver damage or direct hepatotoxicity than heavy chemical/solvent extracts or non-noble strains, it does not eliminate enzyme-inhibiting properties. Enzyme inhibition is a pharmacological action of the kavalactones themselves, not just a byproduct of poor plant quality or chemical solvents.
