What percent of people are random open mat can you handle easily (genuinely curious - be honest and don’t shame for “bragging”)

• Upvotes

Im curious about this

Please answer the question above

Also state your age - weight - years of training grappling - comp experience?

I’ll go first

75% handle with relative ease, 20% give me hard challenge or slightly beat me, 5% (maybe little more) absolutely fuck me up either subbing me multiple times or demolished on points

29 y/o - 175 pounds - training 7 years - competed at large local tournaments at blue belt and did well 14-3 record

Been to at least 15 open mats around United States (travel a lot) and these are general results

The guard redundant

Inb4 reddit gotcha shit. I want a real interesting conversation for once, Im sick of the shitposts.

Techniques in jiu jitsu act like organisms in an environment. The environment selects for certain traits and different solutions are evolved over time.

In grappling, you need to get off the bottom. You can use turtle or guard. They both do the same thing.

Wrestling cultures have used turtle for thousands of years, and there are references to leglocks in antiquity. But I dont think the guard is a truly necessary part of grappling, its merely another evolutionary response that does the same job but in a different way.

Think of how a sharks tail vs a dolphins tail functions. They both WORK, they just work differently. Turtle evolved from the environmental pressure of the pin. Guard evolved because of the Gi and no pinning rules.

The question is, why not just specialize in one or the other? It is time prohibitive to learn both to a high level, and they solve the same problem. Is the unpredictability of an integrated game worth the investment trade off in other areas?

🥃 discuss?

Concerns Raised About SBG North Tyneside

There have been serious allegations circulating concerning SBG North Tyneside and its head coach,

The woman has reportedly been posting reviews about her experiences on the gym's online pages. However, there are claims that these reviews have been repeatedly reported and removed, raising questions about whether efforts are being made to silence her.

There are also allegations that the coach received money, gifts and other items from the woman, reportedly worth tens of thousands in total. The circumstances surrounding these exchanges remain unclear.

These are serious claims that have not been independently verified. Nevertheless, they raise important questions about safeguarding, accountability and how martial arts organisations respond when women raise concerns about misconduct.

Cross Training

Cross Training

Ive been doing BJJ for close to a year now. I also train Kajukenbo, Judo, Muay Thai and Kickboxing. My main BJJ gym knows all this. Thing is, cross training in other styles, I realized its like a 6 degrees of separation thing going on. Guys I train with in Judo go to other BJJ schools Ive visited who train at MMA gyms ive visited, who belted at Karate schools ive visited, etc....I hear some professors have a thing with "loyalty". Is that really a thing? Would my Main professor really feel some type of way if I cross train at another BJJ gym full time? Im obviously gonna belt at my main gym but I wanna get more hours in and learn more and I feel I can do that by adding morning hours as my main gym only has evening hours. Do professors really get mad at cross training?

Feeling like a fraud

34M, 4-stripe white. My training history is a mess: I started about 5 years ago during med residency, then quit because the hospital was eating me alive. I'm in my last year of gastro fellowship now, so I finally have time. I've been training seriously again for about 7 months.

My gym is catch/no-gi. My coach is a black belt in Luta Livre and BJJ and a monster at catch. He just told me I'm getting my blue in the next couple of weeks.
On paper maybe it could make sense: I'm holding my own with guys at my level, tapping some blues, and I took silver at my first gi comp in June. But messy fundamentals. I kinda am just able to get subs.

But last week a 16yo high school wrestler absolutely ragdolled me. Top pressure I couldn't escape, couldn't sweep, the works. I walked out feeling like I know nothing.
On top of that, I'm moving across the country next year and almost every gym there is gi. I'm lost in the gi. Lapels, grips, all of it. It's kind of embarrassing. I know this is a common problem, but I still feel like I should do something about it.

**Questions:**
Is there etiquette for asking to delay a promotion, or is that weird?
Should I just take it, shut up, and keep training?
Is it worth adding a couple of gi classes a week before I move, or will I pick it up fast enough once I'm there?
I just don't want to show up to a new gym with a blue belt and get exposed immediately.

**TL;DR:** No-gi white belt getting promoted soon, got smashed by a teenage wrestler, feels undeserving, moving to an area that's all gi gyms. Delay the belt? Start gi classes now?

Food/Meal Advice.

After some advice or an idea of what other people do in regards to eating before training. So my typical day is breakfast in the morning, then dinner/lunch mid-day and then i won't eat until I've been training which isn't until 6pm on 2 days a week and 7pm on another, which posed a problem yesterday as i had a hard session and threw up and was shaking after, assuming because i had such little calories.

I don't like the idea of someone going knee on belly with me on a full stomach 🫠

Wondered what routines/meals other people have for before training?

Coming off of a long break. Ideally it’ll be close to the airport (YUL) as that’s where my hotel is and we won’t have rental cars. Thanks!

Should I take my son out of jiujitsu?

My son (6) is in a jiujitsu class, ages 5-16. My son really struggles with it, he's not very athletic, which we are working on, and can be a bit sensitive. His father really wants him in jiujitsu and I'm neutral about it, however, this is not the reason I'd like to take him out. It's that NO ONE in class wants to roll with him. No one will approach him to partner with him. Everyone says no and runs away from him if he asks. When the coach assigns him a partner they groan and complain about it. One girl even cried and refused to roll with him today. It is so painful to watch.

I don't know what it is. His hygiene is good. He is a silly boy but not mean. Could be his awkwardness, his ability, not listening, idk. Whatever the reason, I feel like this is just gonna hurt his confidence and make him hate the sport. His dad is constantly lecturing him about getting better and doing this or that. This just can't be good for the kid, right? Or am I being a overbearing parent and babying him?

I plan on messaging the coach on Monday to see if he has any insight on what he could be doing, if all the kids have a problem with him it has to be something he's doing. But I'm not sure continuing to put him in that situation while trying to remedy it is a good idea, especially if it's behavioral, could take awhile.

Was I mat enforced?

I (9 months , 1 stripe white belt) dropped in at a gym out of state. We did technique for 25 min then live rolled the rest of class. I faired very well against the blue belts that I guess the black belt instructor felt he had to roll with me after. I had never experienced rolling with a black belt instructor before this , was this his way of "mat enforcing" me or was this a sign of respect? He told me my fundamentals are tight and I shouldn't be a white belt which gave me external validation I didn't know I needed. It felt good hearing that I'm progressing from a neutral person who isn't from my home gym. Was I mat enforced?

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

I feel like I know what people are going to say, but I’m curious if any of you know anyone who has had this diagnosis and found a safe way to continue BJJ?

My doctor has changed his tune, at first he said “after PT we can discuss you going back” then I messaged him to ask a question and he suddenly changed his tune to say “no actually never again”.

Curious what you guys think. Crazy thing is I’m not in any back pain and haven’t been in years.

Edit: got a second opinion, decompression surgery it is with no fusions necessary. Second opinion said he thought I could return after the surgery.

Partial knee replacement bjj

I’m still new to bjj only about 6 months total experience. Had to stop for a little due to knee issues. A little background i played ice hockey at the junior level as a teenager and tore acl and for surgery. And retore. I was and endurance cyclist doing long gravel rides anywhere from 50-100 miles. Fast forward a little out of shape now but just had scope surgery and now they are saying I need partial knee replacement. I want to continue my BJJ journey just want to know what others have experienced

Belts and stripes

Hi all,

I am kinda new to BJJ and currently a White belt, I am going 2/3x times a week so I have a Gi for each session, what you guys do regarding belt? Do you always use the same one? Or do you have 1 belt per Gi and use that one and wash it after the session? What happens once you get a stripe? If you using more than one belt do you just add a stripe to your others as well?

Also do you guys size up on the belt? I think it looks better a size up

My gym might be headed down the McDojo path.

Within the next year my gym will officially become a “Gracie affiliate”….im not saying that Gracie gyms are mcdojos but the path mine is heading is not good.

The first big change I’m not stoked about is an “attendance based” promotion system. Basically you get a card and for every hour you train you get to fill out your card. Roughly 100hrs per stripe….now currently my coach/gym is WAY behind on promotions especially low level belts. We have white belts winning in blue brackets pretty regularly and 2 stripe white belts are demolishing pretty much any regular that walks through the door. But the idea of attendance based promotions sounds like a horrible plan to me.

A big push toward kids and law enforcement, we will be cutting some of the adult classes to make room for the growing kids classes as well as a “LEO only” classes where we will be selling certification classes and weapons defense.

The overall kiddie glove treatment of everything to stay on the good side of the Gracie’s….no music over pg13, no cussing, no advice unless coach approved etc etc.

Overall it’s just really weird and truthfully I’m hoping to just speed run my blue belt and get to purple so if I need to train somewhere else I’ll be welcome at all classes.

I offer $500 to a BJJ expert or gym to record a BJJ session for YouTube (+50k subs)

Please note that this is to record a YouTube video for a channel, however, location or faces can be blurried if you wish. Only USA. The video is just for entertainment and fun. Channel stats, old content, link, etc. can be shared on PM (not posting here to avoid post removal for self-promotion)

Open to both persons with experience capable of giving lessons or clubs.

$500 are offered, and part can be paid upfront to prove all it’s legit etc.

I have a YouTube channel with over 50,000 subscribers that I’m planning to reactivate/removed as it’s been inactive for years and I’ve pretty much unlisted all my old videos (can send them if you wish to watch some of the content that used to be there. I’m currently traveling from country to country, filming videos in the places I visit. In these videos, I also try out some physically demanding sports to see how someone like me (I have ADHD) handles them in terms of energy and stuff like that. I’m planning to start uploading the videos around November or December.

The idea for the video would be to first explain what’s BJJ, do a beginner’s lesson, showcase somethings related to BJJ and then some rounds of grappling, challenges, and things like that that can be energy demanding to make the content entertaining and fun to watch as well.

I have a little experience in martial arts as I did Judo, but not much, and that was many years ago. I’m 25 years old.

If anyone is interested, feel free to comment or send me a private message and I’ll share more details!
