🗣️discussion One month post Westside Whimsy; Are you still listening?

For myself … I still listen to the album daily lol but my songs have changed

First few favorites were: I Don’t Mind, Mine, Break, He Belongs

My new/current favorites: Don’t be that guy (absolutely favorite new jhene song, it takes me over), Like Whatever, and Nothing Nice to say. Still like I don’t kind

Thoughts on album overall: not my favorite, could probably use louder more distinct songs but not a big deal it’s a good listen. I like listening to the songs separately more than listening to the whole album itself

What are your opinionsss

🗣️discussion The weird posts

I just wanted to post this because I'm new to this subreddit, I love her music and I have been looking at different posts over the years and stuff. I just wanna say I'm so glad that those weird posts about her looks and those weird nsfw posts aren't as prominent as they used to be because I'm so sick and tired of subreddits that are only dedicated to a female artists' looks instead of the actual music.

Just wanted to share lol

💿new album Is ‘He Belongs’ about Jhené Aiko’s dad?

Ever since she said it wasn’t about Sean my brain has been spinning gears. I awoke from a dream with this idea, so I could be completely wrong. But I like to contemplate the deeper meaning in her music and I would love to hear other perspectives. 💭

The evidence:

- ‘Beautiful Ruin’ she refers to her dad as a rolling stone who was never home

- ‘Wild Cats’ a song about her roots opens up the album. She mentions her dad being both a sage and a sag (itarrius) ~ sages are often solitary and their purpose is typically beyond the physical ~ sags are known to be flirtatious, free spirited, on the move, hard to tie down.

- ‘Ghost’ discusses pain and it being all she’s ever known. The loop she is referring to could be the ancestral trauma that is often passed down through generations when we seek what is familiar to us, despite it being toxic. If she wasn’t enough for her dad, maybe she’ll be enough for this guy she’s dating.. at least he understands what it’s like not to have a father around.

- The next few songs she elaborates on this loop she’s in ~ love bombs sucking her in.. she wants to break free as she has come to the realization that Sean will never give her the stable family she has always wanted.

- Then comes ‘He Belongs’ a song about a man belonging to the streets ~ in the alley ways like a wild cat. This could be a full circle moment where she is acknowledging how she ended up in the loop in the first place. Yes other men she has dated may fit the mold for this song, but they are only a symptom of a deeper trauma. ‘Ark to Agartha’ ~ Journey to Inner World.

Scrolling his IG I got the vibe he loves his kids, but he doesn’t seem like a man who is devoted to his family. No photos with a partner, lots of solo content, some young aspiring artist mostly naked. Not what I’d like to see from my dad. I’ve also noted that he has children from multiple different women. One child was even born after Jhené’s son, which isn’t an ideal situation. His focus could be on being an exceptional grandpa at his old age, rather than continuing to have more kids whose lives he will only be apart of for a short time. This is just my opinion of course and I only share because it supports my theory.

Idk what do you guys think? Any fresh ideas? 💡

Love Her No Matter What - That’s Why We’re

We love Jhene! That’s why we’re here. Despite her options… I don’t know her but I feel like I get her. I honestly feel like she could just be dating. Larry June is known to be a PIMP… hopefully she’s strong enough to know that’s not her concern. She messed with Larry June only because she can! I feel. Jhene is a Pisces, sex plays a big roll with them. She can do this. Pisces and sex.. I don’t get it. Besides the point.. Big Sean and jhene started their relationship wrong as well. Jhene was initially married to DotDaGenius ( producer of day n night by kid cudi). Unfortunately, it’s seems that the beginning of her Big Sean started off wrong as well. She got a divorce after she met Sean. Every woman is different… but me personally I was told that how you get someone is how you lose them. It’s like she likes the idea of love but moves oddly…but we don’t know them. Pisces! - that dreamy idea but moves like a fish jumping out the water.

How I see it is they could be playin it one or 2 ways:

  1. Jhene family we know that Larry Junes relationship goals are very opposite of Jhenes. Jhene has waited 10 years and she left her ex husband for Sean ... and decides to go with his friend. Out of all the men.. but I don’t know their story of how they got with each other. Jhene could be having fun with Larry and once again just waiting for the right one. The girl can have fun and date.! Is it messy.. yes.. does it correspond with her ideals for marriage or make sense … no. She could really be having fun in the mean time. She just chose his friend because she can. Why not make 💰? And why not have a little revengeful fun after all the time she has given and can’t get back? It’s understandable especially when you go through heartbreak. She is human just like us.. or she could be delulu for love on her own. She takes her Ls by herself, nobody but her self. She’s learning… mistakes are made everyday. Whether she chose wrong or not.. she pays the price.

  2. Larry June is an Aries ( not compatible to Pisces what so ever!) Larry June - was friends with Sean. Personally if I’m looking from his stand point he could actually care about Jhene or not give a fvck really. He could be with her for publicity, or numbers to help his platform. Men are good at taking care of themselves. Why not be apart of something big like this to make 💰. But what’s it to him? He’s a friend of Sean’s 🤞🏾but also he’s human - he could really like her. My partner thinks that in the song California, Larry June sounded forced (obviously not).

Larry June could just be playing a role, being a friend or her true lover. This woman just left a 10 year situationship - He can either bring peace or pain. His thoughts could be: how can I be serious with her.. when she just left him. This song between the guys was dropped 2-3 years ago… that’s fresh to me personally. How can I take this woman seriously? Look at how we got together. Sean probably thought this as well when they got together and she was married.. 🫨 men think about stuff like this. It could be a game to them - that’s why Sean is silent and focused.

I love Jhene and I’m not a celebrity nor know their personal life but only they know. We will see how this turns out. I love her as an artist wherever the muse came from.Personally she looks happy and full — hopefully she does get it and God puts the right man in her path. I personally love the album but I wish it wasn’t male centered even though that’s her genre.. I would love a side where she shows us just her. Tap back into herself like she did with previous albums. Her roots and just being to herself and how that life is. She hit an obstacle.. a 10y one.. just enjoy you and love will come🪷💕 we love you Jhene.

Does anyone else kinda find it weird for Jhene to be making merch with AI given its negative impact on climate and the environment, especially when shes closing out the album with Golden Coast?

🎶music She hit her lowest note yet in Westside Whimsy.

If you listen to Mine, specifically the “Glad that you’re mine, yeah” parts, you’ll notice she dips into a B2 at the end of the phrase. That’s the lowest she’s gone in her entire career. (Her previous lowest note was C#3, which was hidden in a backing vocal of Jukai)

It’s so catchy and infectious. It’s not even my favorite song and I find myself singing it the most. It needs to be a single and it needs to have a rom com type music video. I love the brightness of the song!

I've been a fan of Jhené since 2013 but I'm not sure she's ever toured in Europe before ? I'd love to see her live . It would be a dream . Does anyone know if its due to short demand or lack of funds/ ressources or personal reasons ? I could be wrong 🫶🏽

Westside Whimsy review

Hello everyone! I have been listening to Jhené for a few years now and I love her previous projects. I just found out she released a new album and decided to give it a listen, but I found myself a little bit disappointed. I think her artistic vision on her previous albums is better. She took risks, sounded more unique, had different production and her lyrics were more versatile. It's not like this album is not good or nice, it's just not that refreshing in my opinion. Compared to some other works that came out by other artists recently and to her older works I think this wasn’t that special. Sorry in advance for my repetitiveness!

My favourite tracks: Break, Ceiling, Neighbours (mostly because of the instrumentals, I think the lyrics are a bit more basic and I don't particularly like the placement of the lyrics rhythmically sometimes. But it's one of the more interesting tracks on the album for sure!)

My least favourite tracks: You, Don't be That Guy, Beach Boy, Love Bomb

Tracklist
First of all, this album has a lot of tracks. 20 to be precise. Which isn't necessarily a problem at all, but in the context of this album I feel like it’s making the entirety of it weaker. This is because a lot of the tracks sound a bit like each other in my opinion. They all have a similar production style, chord progressions and a lot of reverb that is being used. We get 'poppy' songs like 'You' and 'Don't Be That Guy' in regards of lyrics, instrumentals, chords and form. This last song is a ballad and if that's your thing it is a nice song but I found it not very refreshing in any sense. Nice listen, but not necessarily a standout. I feel that some of the songs that I would be enjoying more are too simple or basic, like 'So Good'. Again, pop is not wrong, but I always liked the artistic vision and individuality and rawness Jhené had to her music. I get she was (and is) on a healing journey and that she changed and is not in such a dark place anymore, but that doesn’t mean there can’t be any depth. Especially because the first half of the album is about her break up with Big Sean. This album feels more like a 'one in many'. It's nice but not spectacular. Same goes for 'Beach Boy'. The tracks that are more interesting to listen to still look like each other a lot. If I would play it in the background I probably wouldn't even notice it going to the next song sometimes. Nothing is really happening in the end. It’s almost more of a soundscape or background music. It's like Jhené found a formula to work with and stuck with it (see 'artistic improvement and creative expression').

Lyrics
One of the first things I noticed when listening was that some of her lyrics are not that artistically creative or a bit basic. A lot of the songs I would've liked more if the production and/ or lyrics were different. But instead it feels like Jhené is ‘playing it safe’, which is fine, but it doesn’t leave that much of a lasting impression. Besides that I think the lyrics on her previous albums, for example tracks like 'The Worst', 'Moments', 'sailing NOT selling’, ‘Limbo Limbo Limbo’ and 'None Of Your Concern' (to name a few) have much more dept. The lyrics on the new album also don't come out so well on some of the tracks because of the loud or 'heavy' instrumentals and electronics in the background and a lot of reverb that was used in the production (not all tracks). I feel that her lyrics were personal, yes, but not necessarily very artistic. In her previous works the lyrics could feel like poetry or a certain artistic ‘journey’ she would take you on. I'm not really having that with some of the tracks on this album. For example, I think in ‘terms of distracks B.S.’ is way better compared to 'Love Bombing' because it's lyrically more interesting, the placement is better in my opinion, the instrumentals are more interesting and less boring or monotone. I also think 'You' is a bit of a weaker track, it's very basic and not that interesting in any sense.

Atmosphere and instrumentals
Like I said before, some of the tracks have a lot of reverb in their production. The album is very flowy and chill, while her previous works felt like art; diaries and rawness put into music. This album makes me want to listen to something else after a while, it's more of a background vibe eventually. I don't find it so interesting to listen to. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice album. But for example 'Mine' could've been such a good song if the production was a bit different and the background vocals and instrumentals would've been a bit more interesting. I think some of her lines here are more interesting than other tracks on the album tho, but it's not enough to truly hit. With this I don’t mean that it needs to be a hit album, but to artistically hit. Besides, because of the production (but also the chord progression and keys some of the songs are written in), I almost don't notice it going to the next song sometimes. It makes me tired to listen to because it's a lot of 'the same flavour'. The same chords, the same feel, the same instrumental production, the same reverb, the lyrics that sometimes fades to the background or doesn't really stand out, the same tempo and the same chill vibe. Of course you want a musical project to have some form of cohesion, but I feel like nothing really interesting or risky is happening on this album.

Artistic improvement and creative expression
Like I ended with on 'Tracklist' and said in the 'Atmosphere and instrumentals' section, I feel like Jhene found a formula that works for her and she knows what her fans like and she stuck with it. It's not bad, but it's not interesting. It's not necessarily very developmental or an improvement. It just feels like a big wave of the same stuff in a different font. Especially compared to her previous works this doesn’t stand out. It's nice but it's not her best work if you ask me. How her previous albums truly felt like a journey, this one feels more like background music. I don't think I will listen to it a lot sadly.

Final opinion
I think my final say is that this album is a real chill album and doesn't contain a lot of energy in it and maybe that's just not really my thing. But unfortunately for me that means I will listen to it less, which is sad because I think some of the music would grow on me if I listen more to it like 'So Good' for example.

🌟 6/10
