SUBREDDIT RULES Please Read Before Posting or Commenting

Subreddit Rules & Posting Guidelines

Before you make a post or leave a comment, please take a moment to read and follow the rules below.

These help keep the subreddit useful and respectful for everyone.

1. Do Basic Research First

Use Google or the subreddit search before posting.
Please avoid asking general questions that are already widely answered.

Ask for:

  • Comparisons
  • Personal experiences
  • Context-specific advice

Avoid asking:

  • "What to do in Jakarta?"
  • "What food is good in Indonesia?"

(Use the stickied threads or search bar first.)

2. BE POLITE AND RESPECTFUL

You're talking to fellow human beings—not a search engine or AI.

Greet others with Hello or Hi and don’t forget to say thank you or terima kasih. A little courtesy makes the community better for everyone.

Last thing we need in this city is another entitled ungrateful person. All posts without proper greetings or any manners that look like an AI prompt instead of a real query will be removed, along with their replies.

3. Be Efficient in Your Posts

If you have multiple questions, put them in one post.

Do not create several posts for each individual question.
This sub is definitely not for karma farming.

4. Be Specific and Detailed

Give context to your questions. The more detail, the better the answers you’ll receive.

Good Example:

"I'm visiting Jakarta for 3 days, staying in Kemang. I’d like to see museums and try local street food."

Bad Example:

"What to do in Jakarta?"
"What to eat?"

(These are too broad and may be removed.)

5. Language

English is encouraged to include more people in the discussion.

But Bahasa Indonesia is also welcome.

6. Don’t Gatekeep or Shame Posts

Unhelpful comments like:

"cObA pOsTiNg dI sUb /InDoNeSiA aJa"

...will be removed.

Some users post here because they can’t post elsewhere or had their posts removed in other subs. If you're not contributing, please don't comment.

7. NO Buying or Selling

This subreddit is not a marketplace.

Posts or comments offering items or services for sale, looking to buy something, or otherwise facilitating buying and selling are not allowed.

Please use r/jualbeliindonesia for buying, selling, and other marketplace-related posts instead.

Posts or comments that violate this rule will be removed.

8. NO Soliciting Illegal Matters or Other 18+ Related Matters

This sub will never be associated with criminals, sexpats or degenerates.

Any posts about how to get drugs, prostitutes, sugar daddies, or whatever your sexual kinks or fetishes will be removed. Repeat posters will be permanently banned.

9. Be Civil and Respect Opinions

Disagree without being rude. Don’t insult others' preferences.

We ABSOLUTELY will not tolerate bigots, racists, homophobes, sexists, and other sorts of assholes.

Instead of:

"That place sucks. Food is trash."

Try:

"I didn't enjoy that place personally, but others might."

Important Notes for New Users

  • Accounts less than 1 day old, or with less than 1 karma, will require manual mod approval.
  • Posts that don’t follow the rules will not be approved and will be removed, along with their comments.

Repeat Offenders Will Be Banned

We aim to keep this community helpful and respectful.

Users who repeatedly break the rules will receive a permanent ban.

If you have any questions about the rules, feel free to ask in the comments.

Thanks for helping keep this community great!

First time visiting Jakarta soon! Looking for recommendations on things to do, culture and accommodations

Hey guys as the title suggested, my friend and I will be travelling to Jakarta soon.

However, my friend who’s from Jakarta and my sister both told me it’s boring there and we would be bored with nothing to do for a week there.

I’m kindly asking people who’s been there before, for fun things to do that you wouldn’t normally find in Australia (where I’m from).

Any tips, advice and recommendations are welcome.

Thank you :)

Accessible options in Jakarta

Hi😁

I am visiting Jakarta in mid November and staying in the Menteng district (it is our wedding anniversary and first time travelling outside Australia).

I am disabled and use a walker/rollator so things like walking tours and lots of stairs are not good for me.

I would love recommendations for food and activities that are accessible.

Thank you for your help.

Aesthetic / facial clinics in Jakarta

Hi all! I'm visiting Jakarta soon and I'm looking for a trustworthy aesthetic clinic for:
- Masseter (jaw) botox. I've had it done before in Korea, so I know roughly what to expect.
- Facials and laser treatments

My searches mostly turn up influencer posts, which I'm a bit wary of, so I'd really appreciate honest recommendations from people who've actually been.

Clinic names, doctors you trust, rough pricing, and anything to watch out for would all be super helpful.

I'm also open to suggestions for good spas and nail places while I'm there.

Thank you so much! 🙏

Money Changer/Laundry?

Went to a money changer in fatmawati 3 days ago to change some left over Euros from my last trip to Europe. While sitting there at the counter, huge amounts of USD were exchanged to my left and to my right. To my left a guy exchanged 170k USD. I could see the machine going into overdrive, visible to everyone. Once everything was counted he said he wants to transfer the exchanged money. He gave they details and the clerk came back and said, you have to transfer it to one of your accounts, no 3rd parties accounts allowed. So he requestested it to get it in cash. So, with all this said and without being snobby or arrogant. I could tell, that this guy was "just" a mule. I suspect a driver of some other "important" person, or something similar. He was very uncomortable during the whole process.

What did I just observe?!?!

Need legal advice with cross country inheritance. Death of Scottish father in Indonesia

Hello everyone i am looking for some advice for how to tackle this unfortunate situation ive been placed in.

In may my father passed away in Jakarta. He was a Scottish/British national, who had 4 kids. Me and my 3 sisters. Quick summary of our relationship was that he wasn't the greatest father, he left my Norwegian mother 13 years ago after a 35 year long marriage. Its was a very messy breakup which caused me and my dad to not really talk for 11 years. (mostly him ignoring me). He financially and mentally destroyed my mother which whom i grew up with in Norway. (Lots of affairs and loans in her name that he never paid, etc). 2 years ago i found out he had cancer. Enough time had passed to the point where he stopped ignoring me and we had some very small chats. Mostly about his health and maybe even seeing each other again. The cancer took him before we ever got that far. He died 15 of may this year.

He remarried a Indonesian woman in 2015. Who i have never met. He lived in Indonesia for 7 years. When he died, we found out that his spouse and her community had buried him a few hours after his death. Without informing any of his children this was done. And none of his kids found out until 2 days after the burial. Even my older sisters that had a relationship with him. One of them being very close with him. This was done in this way because he had converted to being Muslim. We didn't know that was the case until after his death as my sister who was close to him never saw him pray, he drank alcohol regularly, ate pork and didn't really practice Islam in any way that we saw. I personally believe that his conversion was only for marriage reasons. But i dont really know.

Regardless, now that so much time has passed since his death ive been trying to reach out to his Indonesian wife about how to deal with inheritance. I dont have a clear picture of what was left behind. I only know that he has 3 estates in Jakarta, that was bought with his inheritance from my grandmother, and his high paying job. (Helicopter mechanic in Qatar). Only problem is, is that these estates are most likely under her name, as he couldn't own property in Indonesia.

I last heard from his spouse on whatsapp in June. when i started asking about these things. She told me that she is grieving to much and cannot do anything. I understood that and proceeded to just want some reassurance that she will be cooperative in settling this when she is ready. She never answered. Since then ive tried multiple messages to her, tried calling her. My sisters have also tried reaching out but she has cut contact with all of us. She wont even help us get his death certificate. Which i have to send to the Norwegian government. as he worked here for 35 years.

I dont know what to do. My uncle claims my father didn't have any money left. As he lost health insurance from his job in December last year. And paid for cancer treatment himself. He also believes that the estates have mortgages on them. And that he owed lots of people money. After talking to a lawyer they quoted me between 5000-7000usd to find out information. Which i cant afford if the case is true that there is nothing there.

What should i do? There seems to be 3 different laws this could fall under but i have no clue. If it would be done through a Muslim court, Indonesian court or a British court. I just want to know if there is any inheritance at all. And get his death certificate. I dont want to take everything from his spouse as she is innocent in my fathers actions. But her ignoring all of his kids after forcing a muslim burial, is just not right. He did not write a will which has made this so complicated.

I really appreciate any advice i could get on this. As im halfway across the world and dont know anything about Indonesia

Massage scene?

Need some help understanding the massage scene in Jakarta. Here for 4 days. Absolutely love a good massage. Don’t mind if it is a WHOLE body massage either but not essential. Anyway, staying in Cikini area and on maps I seem loads of massage places around me, but when I investigate a bit it seems they are all home service places - they come to your home or hotel, not actual stores. Is this normal in Jakarta? Anything I should be aware of? As I say, I am open to eager providers, but key is a good massage! Just not sure what I am getting myself into with these home delivery style offerings! Thanks in advance of a confused visitor.

Air pollution in Jakarta

Hello, has the government made any improvements regarding the air quality in Jakarta the last few years?

I am baffled why Indonesians go outside when the AQI is over 200 or at indoor padel courts there are no air purifiers.

Thank you

GBK Arena to CGK Airport after Ye’s concert — 01:50 or 03:00 flight?

I’m planning to attend Ye’s concert in Jakarta on October 24 and fly out of CGK early on October 25.

I’d like to pre-book an airport transfer rather than use Grab. Would I realistically be able to get from the arena to the airport in time for a 01:50 flight, considering the crowds and traffic after the concert?

How long do check-in, immigration, and security usually take at that time of night?

There’s also a 03:00 flight, but it costs $150 more. Would the extra time be worth it, or would even that be cutting it close? Any advice would be appreciated!

Visa requirements for filming music promo content in Jakarta as a foreign artist?

Hi everyone!

I'm a Dutch citizen planning to visit Jakarta in May 2027, and I'm trying to understand the visa and filming requirements before booking everything.

I'm an independent recording artist, and I want to use the trip to shoot short-form promotional content for my upcoming music releases. Think Instagram Reels and TikToks featuring me as an artist, rather than a full-scale music video production.

My plan is to:

  • Pay for the entire production myself.
  • Hire a local Indonesian videographer.
  • Film content for my own social media accounts to promote my upcoming music.
  • Potentially shoot across several locations over a few days.

I won't be receiving payment from an Indonesian company or brand, and I won't be providing videography services to clients.

I've been looking into the different visa options and came across the C5A Content Creator Visit Visa and the D14 Filming Visa. I'm unsure whether my particular situation falls under content creation or professional filming, and whether I would need additional permits or a local production company.

A few questions for anyone with relevant experience:

  1. Has anyone filmed promotional social media content in Indonesia on a C5A visa?
  2. Would a self-funded shoot promoting your own music require a filming permit?
  3. Is hiring a local videographer sufficient, or would you need a registered production company or fixer?
  4. Have any independent artists or creators gone through this process recently, and what did it cost?

I'm happy to follow the correct procedures. I just want to make sure I budget and prepare properly before travelling.

Thanks in advance for any advice! 🙏

Reading Prices in Indonesia

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi all, please forgive me if this is a dumb question. I'm currently researching some spots to get some hair styling done and I'm not sure if I'm interpreting the pricing correctly. I know that periods (.) are used to separate thousands instead of commas, however, it seems unreal to me that the service I want would be 3,000 rupiah or the equivalent of .17 cents USD. Am I supposed to read it as 3,000,000 rupiah or is actually 3,000? Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

How to DIY Jakarta Cathedral from Soekarno–Hatta Airport?

Hi! Has anyone tried going DIY from Soekarno–Hatta International Airport (CGK) to Jakarta Cathedral / Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption (Gereja Katedral Jakarta, Paroki Santa Perawan Maria Diangkat ke Surga)?

I’m planning to visit on my own and would like to know the easiest and cheapest way to get there using public transportation. Is it better to take the airport train first, then transfer to a local train, bus, or other public transport?

I’d appreciate details on the route, where to transfer, approximate fare, travel time, and how much walking is involved. Is it easy enough to DIY for a first-time visitor, or would Grab/Gojek or a taxi be more practical?

Thank you.

Looking for Internship Opportunities as a International Marketing & Finance Undergraduate Student to Jakarta

Hello everyone! I'm currently a third year at my university in America and I'm looking for opportunities to apply as an intern in Indonesia for business development, finance, accounting, marketing analytics, or social media. My family's initially from Indonesia so I wanted an opportunity to both embrace the culture in Jakarta while gaining some professional development and experience.

My university does not offer any opportunities to study abroad or have any connections to Indonesia so I've resorted to searching online. However, there's not a lot of programs whenever I search up, "Internships in Jakarta," "Summer Programs in Indonesia," or anything like that. If anyone has any tips please let me know! Thanks so much.
