General Am I wrong for thinking my company is expecting way too much from an intern?
I recently joined a company as an intern, expecting to learn, gain experience, and get some guidance from experienced people.
Instead, I'm the only intern, and I've been tasked with building an entire Inventory Management System (IMS) from scratch.
The company has been using Tally for years, but now they want a new system that will eventually replace their existing software. I was hired specifically for this project, apparently with the expectation that I can use AI tools like Claude to build it.
The problem is that this isn't some small college project. It involves understanding the company's workflows, inventory processes, database design, frontend, backend, and a lot of business-specific requirements.
I'm expected to figure most of this out on my own. There's practically no technical guidance or mentorship from the company.
I'm willing to learn, put in the effort, and use AI as a tool. I don't expect everything to be spoon-fed to me. But I joined as an intern expecting an opportunity to learn under experienced people, not to independently take responsibility for building an entire business-critical system.
I understand that internships can involve challenging work, but shouldn't there be some supervision, especially when the end goal is to replace software the company has relied on for years?
**I'd like to hear your honest opinions:**
- Is this a normal expectation for an intern?
- Am I underestimating myself, or is the company asking too much?
- Can one person realistically build something like this with AI assistance but no proper technical guidance?
- Should I see this as a great learning opportunity or a red flag?
I'm not afraid of hard work. I just want to know whether this is normal in the industry or whether I'm being given responsibilities that should realistically be handled by a team.
**TL;DR:** Joined as an intern expecting mentorship and learning opportunities. Instead, I'm the only intern and am expected to build an entire IMS to replace the company's existing Tally-based setup, with practically no guidance. Am I overreacting?
