That's a horrible way to go

Most definitely.

Then factor in the heat. Good lord.

•

u/I_Got_Back_Pain 3h ago

How about this one

•

u/BlessTheBookPeople 3h ago

Somehow it seems more tragic when it’s man-made vs a natural accident. Still an awful death and I’m sure it didn’t matter to the deer whether it was a can or a cliff but there are so many videos of people rescuing animals from cans, fishing lines, etc that you have to wonder how often it happens when there isn’t someone around to help.

•

u/Degenerate_Dryad 1h ago

Lots of animals- like birds, fish, and sea turtles to name a few- die starving with bellies so full of plastic garbage that they are unable to eat more (actual food) 😞

Nature is indifferent.

Fatally Beautiful is how I describe it

•

u/punkinabox 3h ago

Brutal, but also awesome, so I agree.

•

u/the_rare_bear 3h ago

That’s why I am glad I’m not an insect. The bug world is like a world war 24/7.

•

u/AzureDrag0n1 2h ago

No. Its worse. The insect world is a nonstop horror movie that strains the limits of human imagination.

True but think about how advanced some insects are though because of their brutal environment. The evolution is insane

I think of this sort of thing all the time when I see videos of like, pet raccoons with people in the comments whining "Noooo this beautiful creature belongs in nature!! This is abuse!"

Like try to keep it on a diet, but at the end of the day, a plump raccoon living the good life pampered in a house is not getting a worse deal than its fellows out there getting parasites, starving to death in the winter, or getting held down and eaten alive by a bored black bear.

•

u/pichael289 2h ago

That's not the reason you should not have a pet racoon. They will ruin your house and they throw fits alot. Better not like wearing shorts as they will just run up your leg and shred it. They are little terrorists when they get the slightest bit unhappy. They are adorable and maybe you can be on good terms with your local one but don't let it in the house.

Sometimes, when people learn that I have a pet pigeon, they tell me that I’m being cruel and she should get to fly and see the world. Pigeons are primarily ground dwelling birds… She would also die within the first 2-3 years of her life to predation, disease, or starvation.

With me, she gets plenty of time and space to fly from perch to perch, plenty of time and space to walk around and forage in a safe environment, unlimited seeds, unlimited enrichment, and her life expectancy is 10-15 years. I could never send my baby out to face the brutality of nature.

•

u/punkinabox 2h ago

I don't think having a raccoon as a pet is necessarily abuse but a raccoon isn't a domesticated animal and they aren't something that should be kept in a house as a pet like a dog or a cat. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have a trash panda as a pet but they require a different level of care vs a dog or cat. So unless you really know what you're doing, you shouldn't have a raccoon as pet in your home. That's where the "abuse" claims come into play.

•

u/King_of_the_Kobolds 2h ago edited 2h ago

I get what you're saying but at the same time, nature doesn't provide any consistent 'level of care' either. Animals die in the wild constantly in far worse fates than ignorant caregivers giving suboptimal nutrition to their charges. Mother Nature herself is a more negligent guardian than anyone you'll find on TikTok.

When it comes to online content of 'pet' wild animals, unless there's some serious abuse or negligence going on like ultra tiny living conditions, I'm usually less concerned for the individual animal and more the effects of influencers popularizing taking animals out of nature, which destabilizes the ecosystem at large.

Agreed. The vast vast vast majority of sentient life on earth dies scared and painfully to predators, hunger, or the elements. Any thing that can avoid that is statistically a powerball winner in the grand scheme of things

u/AutoDefenestrator273 3h ago

Wtf, I don't suppose there was any chance that he died from asphyxiation or a broken neck? That's awful.

Also, how in the world did the spine stay intact?

•

u/Justinian555 3h ago

The only way I can think of is that the Caribou found some footing but wasn't able to use it to make its way back up, and then the footing was able to support the Caribou's spine long after its death. Nature truly holds no punches.

•

u/MilsYatsFeebTae 3h ago

Not a caribou expert, but I’ve dissected a human and the spinal column has a ton of ligaments.

There's some chance. Horses often can't recover from broken legs because they need to be able to move to breath. This position might have cut off its breathing or at least made it pass out. Though I'm not sure about deers. They are very stupid and get into situations like this all the time

•

u/dayruined54 3h ago

Is this real? Cause dont the bones fall apart after the tendons are rotten?

•

u/Fun-Temperature-5243 3h ago

No, tendons just attach muscles to bones, they don't connect bones together

•

u/dayruined54 3h ago

Then what connects bones together?

•

u/WhollyUnholy 3h ago

From my anatomy class, "Tendons Tie muscles to bones, Ligaments Link bone to bone"

•

u/FlacidSalad 3h ago

Liggy bone bone

→ More replies (1)

•

u/pichael289 2h ago

The tendons are gone but the ligaments are not the only thing holding the spinal column together. It's one of the last pieces to fall apart especially like this where you expect limbs to fall off much earlier than normal. It won't stay this way, it's only going to be like this for a little while until the spinal column deteroiates.

•

u/AutomatonTommy 3h ago

•

u/ThickMaize-2225 3h ago

With some luck it might have damaged it's spine and didn't feel much pain below its neck while dying.

•

u/Dangerous_Ad3757 2h ago

With compassion I say I hope the body weight fall broke the neck and ended it quickly for it. That’s insane.

•

u/pichael289 2h ago

There's a good chance he wasn't stuck and died, but rather his thrashing around caused the can to slit his throat. It's why you don't give cats food right from the tin. They can cut their tongues and that's a very painful injury for any animals. Having your tongue amputated before anesthesia was considered one of the most painful things. Lizards can feel pain, they just don't show it

•

u/Beautiful-Total-3172 1h ago

Do you think it starved or it's head cooked in the heat? Suffocation maybe..

Poor thing. This is why people need to stop littering. Something as small as a discarded soda can can become a death trap for wildlife. 😞

To me, littering is a Top 3 sin. I genuinely lose any respect for someone who litters.

This is like those commercials with the ducks and turtles that got stuck in the plastic 6-pack rings. I still cut those up to this day. That was one of the most effective marketing campaigns ever

•

u/revcor 2h ago

It stuck with me too... I pull those out whenever I see em in the trash at anybody's house and cut em up

•

u/RednocTheDowntrodden 2h ago

Same here, I will sometimes see them on the sidewalk or randomly on the ground. I always stop what I'm doing and cut every single hole to make sure nothing gets stuck in it.

•

u/AvidasMavi 1h ago

In Europe they are made of organic material now, melting in water or on sand/soil.

I guess the great united states of america still using plastic.

•

u/Goolashe 2h ago

It's bewildering that it was so successful in shifting the blame for them onto the customer instead of, you know, the company that makes something so deadly. It's not like we haven't banned things over far less, nor are there a lack of alternatives.

•

u/Dull-Computer-324 1h ago

Surely most animal deaths from those are because people littered them, rather than throwing them away properly. I still cut mine before I throw them away, but unless someone rips open my trash bag between here and the landfill, it doesn't really matter.

•

u/xxnoxynoxxnoxy 3h ago edited 2h ago

I am never going to throw a can away without smashing it ever again after seeing this

edit: Yes everything goes into the recycling that's what I mean by throwing it away. We all have a bin for garbage and a bin for recycling. I'm going to smash it even though I put it in the recycling bin. There are lizards all over the place where I live and sometimes bins roll over, you never know what will happen to them once they're out of your control. Kind of confused about how many of you are acting like I threw this goddamn can in the picture out my car window or something

•

u/A_yoonicorn 3h ago

Gonna hold you to that. We will be watching.

•

u/Drewzik 3h ago

I put mine in a big trash can designated for cans. Once it’s full, I put them through a hand crank can crusher mounted on the wall. Satisfying, and you can recycle more at once

•

u/DyingSunSeverian 3h ago

ASMR 4 Jesus

•

u/hauntedbabyattack 3h ago

u/the_rare_bear 3h ago

I think not littering is the bigger concern.

•

u/Ditania 3h ago

Even if you throw the can in the trash you should smash it, animals also eat from the trash.

•

u/geronimo11b 3h ago

Same reason I always tear up the Gatorade plastic holder things. Can’t be having any ducks walking around plastic’ed up.

•

u/SilasTalbot 3h ago

But you have to also mumble "For the dolphins" as you do it

•

u/Wrong-Tell8996 3h ago

I don't drink soda anymore, but when I did and got them in those plastic holder things, I always cut them with scissors before tossing them. Easy peasy. Snip each ring in half, then snip the middle plastic part in half.

•

u/Master_Poet5106 3h ago

Here in England we dont have the plastic can holders anymore. We switched to cardboard a while ago. Hate them when my cans fall out in the shop but its worth it to know animals won't get hurt so easily

This is just sad.

Imagine slowly dehydrating and overheating to death with your head stuck in a dark and hard metal contraption

It probably stuck its head in there for a sip of condensated water during the night.

•

u/Main-Home-3996 2h ago

There waa a meteor

•

u/EnvironmentalWin1277 2h ago edited 2h ago

There are many things that were concretely "worse for the planet".

My favorite is the Great Oxygenation Event. The world largely consisted of anaerobic bacteria. Once one kind discovered photosynthesis it completely wiped that world out except in glass jars that kids bring in for school. Don't open. I did. Some one else's project. Good times.

Another is the development of multicellular animals and plants in general which also wiped out the known world that existed to that point.

It might well be the future notes us only as a blip in the passage to AI "life".

But otherwise I'm totally in the worst thing ever camp with you. My (and your) awareness is unique in natural history as well, so take a look around and realize you are the wave dude. Good to grok with you. Oh yeah dinosaurs--dinosaurs!

I got up for work one morning, it was still dark outside but I could hear some rustling in the bush and in the moonlight I could see something moving.

I ventured outside to find a cat with its head stuck in an old can of food. Not sure where the can had come from but it was in my property none the less.

It took me about 30 minutes to slowly wiggle the can on off this cats head whilst holding it down with a towel as the cat was trying to swipe it me constantly.

When I freed the cat it ran into the scrub and I havent seen it since thankfully, as wild cats kill native fauna and are usually shot. Regardless of if an animal is a pest or not, it doesn't deserve to die with a can stuck on its head.

For context I live in the bush and only have cattle fences so its likely the cat stumbled into my yard with the can on its head.
