East Coast amusement parks were simply built different at the turn of the century.

A world before personal injury attorneys

•

New York led the way in the development of personal injury law. Unsurprisingly.

Today they'd get a "you can't tell me what to do, you commie!" and then when they lose their fingers they're like "you shouldn't have let me do that I'm suing your ass!"

Imagine your hand pinched between those hand rails

•

u/HoldEm__FoldEm 4h ago

Well, don’t put your hand there. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Oof or long hair in those spinning circles

•

u/MuchachoMongo 4h ago

Or a finger. That's why they are folding their arms like that.

•

u/akaMONSTARS 4h ago

That was my immediate thought. I was waiting to see someone pull their hand away real quick

Those hand rails were by absolutely terrifying.

In Sydney we have Luna Park and inside that we have a Coney island section built 1939. It still has most of those rides going.

This is the kind of society anti-regulation people yearn for!

You know, one of my favorite things about Burning Man is that you do get rides and climbable or interactive things that aren't 100% safe. It's not like Disneyland where you need to go 50 years without hurting anyone - if your installation can make it through the week without breaking any limbs, that's doing OK. My contribution in that department is this thing, which has made it through a few years so far without hurting anyone, unless you count all the times I've whacked myself in the head while working on it.

Someone lost a finger to a giant spinning boar sculpture several years ago and there have been a few serious fall injuries but I can't think of any fatalities from fixed installations. More often they've been from vehicles.

These are all faster than real time speed

•

About twice the speed.

I've been on one of those bouncy bridge things as part of a fairground "fun house" in the late 60s/early 70s.

•

u/ultravires1215 4h ago

The fatality rate was only 6%!

•

u/unk214 5h ago

Hell to the no…. I’m not trusting any of these washing machine devices.
