Please pay your last respects to /u/Delta_S4. It's their video. I'd provide a link to their post, but AutoMod removes my comment when I do.

Best way, I think. I've heard stories of a biker who had a heart attack on his bike. He pulled off the road just in time, then dropped dead. One of my favourite singers died suddenly on stage, too. Almost anything probably beats being bedbound for ages just waiting to die.

So many of our consoles have died alone and dusty in some dark closet. Some of them we still don't even know if they're dead because we haven't taken them out in years. This PS2 went out like a fucking viking.

Who knows if it WAS the original poster, BUT the first time I saw this post only a few months ago, maybe within a year, others were replying similar but the dude had already done some things to it, leading everyone to condemn the GPU itself. i swear he resoldered it but i might be making that up.
•
u/sephirothFFVII 11h ago
Reballing a GPU isn't easy, been watching YouTubers fixing up graphics cards and they use a lot of equipment most folks simply won't have.
→ More replies (1)•
u/ScreamSmart 9h ago
Those repair videosl would bridge individual paths on multi layered motherboards with hair like strands of copper.
•
u/sephirothFFVII 7h ago
Saw one where the dude did that and used green resin to rebuild multiple layers. Very satisfying to watch but it doesn't seem like they turn a great profit for all that skilled work... Could be wrong in the higher end video card restorations though

Our first console was a SEGA Genesis, then we were gifted the Playstation 1 on Christmas of its release year. Then we got surprised by the PS 2 when my mom gave us new games for our PS 1. But they were PS2 games, so initially, we were a little disappointed and told her she accidentally got the wrong games and they wouldn't work on ours. Then she smiled and leaned behind the couch and asked "Do you guys think they would work better on this?" Lifting up a brand new in-the-box PS2! We lost our minds, best Christmas ever😎🤘

Pretty cool, I would have only been mildly surprised if the car appeared irl, full speed smashing through the house . Definitely some kind of transition there. Are you still in this dimension op or are you wandering around stuck in a ps2 game ?

There's a game about that. Never played it, but the concept is pretty intriguing.

My brothers did this a couple years ago right in the middle of a heated Tekken fight. We still argue about who would have won… Ahhh how I miss blisters on my thumbs from that game!

u/popwhizzbang 5h ago
I bet your brother would have won

Lol! Yeah, he probably would have! I’m the older and he had fair more gaming time than I did. 5 year age gap. I had to work and stuff…. Pay bills and all.. Damn sure ain’t admitting that to him though!!!

I have 5 ps2's mostly because friends kept giving me theirs, plus one I bought right before they stopped producing them. I hope I can outlast this because the ps2 Library is one of the best in gaming.

Fake news. PS2 is unstoppable. Mines been to like 14 different countries with all kinds of janky power adapter situations and she is unflappable.
33
u/MeNoCanRead 16h ago
Why did you take your PlayStation to 14 different countries?
48
u/DoesntMatterEh 15h ago
The ps2 is well known for it's love of travel. If you weren't taking yours on trips you were doing it a great disservice!
11
u/paraworldblue 12h ago
OP's PS2 failed because it stayed in one place for too long and developed severe mental health issues.

I brought it with me on the aircraft carrier and it would sit in my locker below all my other shit and then I’d bring it with me whenever I’d get a hotel room in port. That machine is nigh indestructible. I’d certify it as military grade. Mine still has the paper “high value” chit I had to put on it in my barracks room.
26
u/th3h4ck3r 15h ago
I’d certify it as military grade.
Fun fact, when it came out in Japan, it was classified as export restricted due to the CPU being so powerful at physics-related calculations it was theorized it could guide missiles.

For context, the video shows the GPU memory (VRAM) or some sort of data bus in the video card failing.
You notice how it's losing track of what to render in certain blocks of the screen and certain polygons, but the gameplay and audio is still smooth, and it didn't actually crash until the end there?
I'm guessing that's when it got so bad that the rest of the machine lost some vital bit of feedback and stopped to wait for it.
Edit: the video was uploaded by u/Delta_s4. It wasn't me who recorded this for all confused by how I wrote it.

Makes me wonder if some PCB wizard could replace the failed chip on the board

u/fivelone 16h ago
Definitely fixable. May be easy may not. Usually pretty simple for a tech.

It’s a failing ram chip on the motherboard. I’ve replaced these in GPU’s but not in a PlayStation so idk

This is all lies. What's the point of lying about this?
This is a PS2 that has been circuitbent and someone is twisting a dial to make the screen look interesting.
Something like this: https://www.instagram.com/reels/C2aS_lStycT/
You're also making it sound like this was your experience but it has been posted to Reddit many times before

Your post is a much more succinctly-worded version of my own thought, which is "why is he filming this? What are the odds he'd be filming a random driving game, an old game no one would ever film, and so stably, and right as it dies."

u/stonekeep 14h ago
I don't think that recording part is that weird though. The artifacts might have started happening a bit earlier, so someone might have paused the game, grabbed a phone/camera and started recording, then they got progressively worse. That part is plausible.
(Of course we already know that's not the case, I'm just saying that it's not unrealistic like it is in many other random videos.)

What made you think to record this? Like, do you always record yourself playing video games?
79
u/ElectricDance 15h ago
Its not his recording. This has been around the internet for awhile. You can see where the polygons are failing in the beggining of the video.
→ More replies (1)35
u/SimisFul 15h ago
It's not OP's video but you can see some slight artifacting right when they unpause the game. Makes me think whoever recorded it noticed them and thought the PS2 was nearing EOL so they recorded it. Probably didn't expect such an intense death though lol

i’m guessing this was happening relatively consistently and they recorded it. perhaps when the GPU got hot, it would fail consistently.

Last time I turned mine on, it sounded like a leaf blower before I even put in the disc (purchased in 2001). I just said, 'its ok pal, maybe we try again soon'. I can't bare to watch it die. If I convince myself it could still work, it's like all those memories are there waiting.

One time I took a hero dose of mushrooms. And this is exactly how it looked. Like paneling was failing and I could see the simulation behind it. Which looked like I was looking out of a massive bay window into space.

It hurts to see a PS2 die a slow and painful death. Is this some video card issue?
My slim PS2 is luckily still alive and working well, almost 21 years old at this point. Not saying all PS2s last this long but man these things were sturdy and dependable.
