A very creative dance performance by a dance group using the entire stage as a prop.

This looks like playing a next-gen rhythm video game, absolutely stunning production and execution

At this point it's so refreshing to watch something that isn't AI

u/Icy_Example_5536 18h ago
And a performance that doesn't keep being interrupted by super over-the-top camera switches between the "judges" & the audience.

u/WitchesSphincter 14h ago
As much as people bag on laugh tracks they at least were just audio on top, not a cut from the action to show how you should feel. They're literally the same concept

u/Toincossross 6h ago
I’ve been to tapings and it so much more enjoyable than watching on TV with the constant cutaways and truncated performances.

Try live theater

Who can afford live theater?
Edit: My comment is on shrinking household buying-power b/c inflation - and is not a comment on ticket prices. So, I do want to shout-out to the amazing community theater and college music and theater programs. They are VERY good performances at affordable prices - check them out.

During my theater course we had a saying. Theater is poor people entertaining rich people
25
u/Cute-Interest3362 19h ago
If ya ain’t in NYC it’s often cheaper than the movies
23
u/nowhereman136 19h ago
Even New York has a lot of affordable theater. Its not just Broadway, but off broadway, off-off-broadway, and a ton of variety shows
1
u/runekaim 16h ago
What's the difference between off Broadway and off off Broadway? I'm genuinely curious.
4
u/nowhereman136 16h ago
Broadway and off Broadway is mostly a difference in theater size. Off-off Broadway is a catchall term for any live theater in New York (and sometimes NJ) that isn't Broadway or Off Broadway. Sometimes this is plays but its also one man shows, variety acts, performance art, etc
How I Met Your Mother had an episode where Barney performed his own off-off-off Broadway show where it's just him in a 10 seat theater being annoying for 3 hours

u/Chimie45 16h ago
One is on Broadway, the other is not on Broadway. Duh.
Anyways, 500+ Seat theater is Broadway, 1~499 is Off Broadway.
Broadway have higher budgets, better casts, higher productions because of higher revenue. Though some will do off-broadway tours and such.

"Affordable" means $50?

u/nowhereman136 18h ago
By new York standards, yes. Here's a site to help you find a lot of off and off off shows for cheap. It even lists the cheapest way to see on Broadway shows. Most Broadway shows have lottery tickets for $50 if you win (Hamilton is $10). I've seen a few dozen shows over the years and have never paid more than $50/ticket

u/GenderBender3000 17h ago
Not sure where you live but that’s definitely not the case here. Live theatre is a once a year special treat for us and the kids. Anywhere from $100-$200 a ticket is definitely not what I would consider cheaper than a movie.

u/Cute-Interest3362 15h ago
If you live in a major US city I guarantee there are loads of little theater companies that charge much less. You are talking about tired touring Broadway gotta look a little further
3
u/Contrary45 15h ago
Go to your community theatre, $100+ is almost always a broadway tour and not an actual local production of a show. My community theatre which puts on some incredible shows most expensive ticket is $48 for a musical and around $20-30 for a play.

Lots of shows travel. Book of Mormon was just in my city. Also, there are tons of plays and community theatre around.

Not true at all. Philly, St Louis, Chicago, Seattle, Baltimore, Boston, Austin, Portland…all great theater towns

I work in live theatre and we talk about this constantly. Most theatre companies have discounted nights and child/family discounts. You can always call the box office and they'll be happy to help.

I've seen a better quality video of this exhibition, but I can't find it. Anyone has the link, or some keywords to look for it?

One of the reasons I miss living in SoCal. You walk around Hollywood, they'll pull you to the side and offer you free tickets to sit in as an audience member and just be hype on command. This performance is actually sick though, no fake hype cue needed.

FYI for anyone in LA, you can get free tickets to America's Got Talent tapings in Pasadena

So many good acts like this, and I remember there was one way back in the early AGT seasons that I really thought should've won but got like 3rd or 4th

I wanna see this show. Is it in Vegas?
8
u/Darth-Taytor 14h ago
They're based in Vegas but it seems like they don't have a set show like Cirque and others. Looks like they can be booked for events
2
u/cryptolipto 13h ago
Dang I might never see them then. They should have a standing Vegas show!
3
u/Darth-Taytor 13h ago
Okay I actually just found that they'll be debuting a standing show next year. The location hasn't been announced, but it is happening.

Reminds me of Team iLuminate. I wanted them to win so bad that season. I think it was Olate Dogs that beat them? I can't fully remember. I just remember they were robbed.
•
u/g3n0unknown 5h ago
Had to look it up because Olate(?) Dogs(They were Season 6 of AGT, iLumiate was Season 6) didn't sound right. It was Landau Eugene Murphy. I wanted him or iLuminate to win.
Also I love how ever one is Mention Light Balance. Another act I loved, because of iLuminate, haha.

I loved watching Royal Lasers, still glad Nene won, but they also deserved how far they got.
The robot dancers should’ve never gotten golden buzzers.
7
u/RaggedEarth 13h ago
I feel like the real star of something like this is the person who programs the timing and animations of the guys/gals wearing the light suits! Like where it looked like they fell through the platform.

u/LaundryMan2008 19h ago
I’ve been to the lion king show and some of the mechanics they used is very impressive, I wonder how often they have to do maintenance to fix it/keep it from breaking

This is so cool. Just to make sure I understand it correctly, their costumes are rigged up with LEDs that make them look invisible when turned off so they're lifting the guy up to make it look like he's floating? And there's a second platform on the stage and a really HD projection?

There's probably an extra who's making his cape "flap in the wind" in the zipline section.
The thought of that makes me smile

It feels a bit underwhelming to me because it looks like you’re just watching a prerecorded video being played on a giant screen. You don’t really get the feeling that the players are actually there, physically performing in front of you.
4
u/siazdghw 17h ago
It's still half a dozen people with suits that turn off and on for their parts.
Obviously the digital visuals are a large part of the show, and I get how that may turn people away, but you have to treat it like magic tricks, you know it's not real and may even know how it works, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the showmanship, creativity and performance.

u/APC_ChemE 17h ago
Yeah, I feel exactly the same way. It just looks like some prerecorded digital video.
I attended a ventriloquist act as a kid not knowing what it was. The stage was mic’d up, so both his voice and his other voices came straight out of the venue speakers. Since I didn't know what ventriloquism was, I just assumed he was standing there talking to a pre-recorded audio track and found the whole thing completely underwhelming. My parents were disappointed I hadn't enjoyed the show. When they asked me why and I gave my response, they explained what was happening. It didn't make it any cooler because despite the new perspective I wasn't any more impressed, it didn't change my experience. I would have to see something like that again to see and hear the illusion.

How many times are they gonna have dudes who dance in the dark with light up jackets on America's got talent

I mean, if mostly everything is a projection or video, make the dancers cgi too. Who's fucking notice the difference. This is basically a movie.
